1. Of 585 strains of lactose-fermenting aerobes each isolated from faeces of a different person, 501 did not utilise citrate or ferment cellobiose; 20 were citrate negative and cellobiose positive; 27 were cellobiose negative and citrate positive; and 37 were positive to both tests.

2. Almost 10 per cent, of the strains isolated were indol negative.

3. One culture was methyl-red negative and Voges-Proskauer positive. Two were positive to both tests. The rest were methyl-red positive and Voges-Proskauer negative.

4. It is concluded that the results are not favourable to the use of the citrate or the cellobiose test in routine water analysis.

5. A discussion of the taxonomy of the lactose-fermenting aerobes is given. Only two species, Bacterium coli (Escherich) L. and N., and Bacterium aerogenes (Escherich) Chester, are recognised.

Forty-one strains of adenovirus type 19/37 (Ad19/37) mainly isolatedI from patients with keratoconjunetivitis or conjunctive between 1974 and 1984 were re-evaluated by serum neutralization (SN), haemagglutination inhibition (HI) and DNA restriction analysis. Of 19 isolates which were neutralized to high titre by antiserum prepared against prototype Ad19, 5 showed cross-reactivity with 32–64 units of Ad37 antiserum, while of 22 strains neutralizedto high titre by Ad37 antiserum, 3 showed eross-reaetivity with 32 units of Ad19 antiserum By DNA restriction analysis, all Ad19 isolates were identieal to each other and to Ad19A virus. Using endonuclease Bgl 1, three variants were observed among the Ad37 isolates.

The 7-valent pneumococcal conjugate vaccine (PCV7) was included in the routine infant immunization schedule in Ireland in September 2008. We determined the serotype of 977 S. pneumoniae isolates causing invasive disease between 2000–2002 and 2007–2008, assessed for the presence of the recently described serotype 6C and determined the susceptibility of isolates during 2007–2008 to penicillin and cefotaxime. Serotype 14 was the most common serotype during both periods and 7·7% of isolates previously typed as serotype 6A were serotype 6C. During 2000–2002 and 2007–2008, PCV7 could potentially have prevented 85% and 74% of invasive pneumococcal disease in the target population (i.e. children aged <2 years), respectively. The level of penicillin non-susceptibility was 17% in 2007–2008. Ongoing surveillance of serotypes is required to determine the impact of PCV7 in the Irish population and to assess the potential of new vaccines with expanded valency.

Coumatetralyl was evaluated in the laboratory against Bandicota bengalensis and Rattus rattus. Feeding tests with 0·0375 % coumatetralyl baits produced 100 % mortality after a single day feeding period in B. bengalensis and after a 10–day period in R. rattus. The anticoagulant bait is less palatable in comparison to plain bait. In the case of R. rattus, LFP50 and LFP98 and their 95 % confidence limits were 3·89 (2·62–5·77) days and 11·22 (6·1–20·65) days respectively. Median period of survival and its 95% confidence limits of B. bengalensis and R. rattus were 4·7 (3·85–5·7) days and 11·2 (9·33–13·44) days respectively.

This is a surveillance study of the antimicrobial resistance of the S. flexneri group in the context of its serotype diversity. It includes 1422 isolates, which were sent to the National Shigella Reference Centre (NSRC) by hospitals and outpatient clinics in Israel during a 3-year period (2000–2002). The strains were identified and classified according to the prevalence and antigenic structure of their serotypes. All samples were checked for resistance to ampicillin (AMP), trimethoprim–sulphamethoxazole (TMP–SMX), ceftriaxone (CRO), tetracycline (TE), nalidixic acid (NAL), and chloramphenicol (C) by the disk diffusion method of Bauer et al. There were significant differences in their resistance to the individual antimicrobials with resistance to AMP, TE and C being lower among the strains of serotype 6 than among those of serotypes 2a and 1b. The resistant phenotypes were also serotype-specific. The similarities both in individual and in phenotype resistance between the rare and the prevalent serotypes (but not serotype 6) may be attributed to their antigenic relatedness. The serospecificity of the antimicrobial resistance was not affected by external factors such as seasonality and source (hospital or outpatient laboratory) of the isolates, and the age and sex of the patients. The serotype-specific approach can assist in properly assessing the problem of the antimicrobial resistance of the Shigella flexneri group and may prove useful for the empirical therapy of shigellosis. The observed interdependency between resistance and the antigenic specificity and relatedness of the S. flexneri serotypes requires additional investigation.

The epidemiology of Q fever in the residents of two rural areas, respectively, the Romney Marsh in Kent and Chatteris-Witchford rural districts in Cambridgeshire, has been studied.

In the Romney Marsh some 14 % of persons who had suffered from pneumonia or undiagnosed fever probably had Q fever. No cases of Q fever were detected in Chatteris-Witchford R.D.

Two sources of infection—sheep and infected cows' milk—were found in the Romney Marsh, and the infection of some of the cases of Q fever could be attributed to them. There was also a group of cases who were probably not infected from milk or by direct exposure to sheep. They may, however, have been indirectly infected from sheep.

The absence of Q fever in the Chatteris-Witchford area is of interest in view of the use of raw milk by a substantial proportion of the inhabitants of this area and also because of their contact with cattle. Investigation, however, failed to reveal any infection of the cattle with Rickettsia burneti.

Staphylococcus aureus is a leading cause of infections in deployed service members. Based on a molecular epidemiological study of 182 MRSA isolates from patients in three U.S. Army combat support hospitals in separate regions in Iraq, USA300 clone was the most predominant (80%) pulsotype. This finding suggested that strain carriage from the home country by military personnel is epidemiologically more important than local acquisition.

To investigate risk factors during a community outbreak of hepatitis A we carried out a case- control study of 35 cases and 49 matched controls using an interviewer-administered questionnaire on clinical history, travel, household details including domestic toilet facilities, infectious contacts, and food history. Of 99 cases notified in the city during the outbreak year, 50 (51%) were young adults age 15–34 years. Hepatitis A infection was independently associated with household contact with a case (P=0·0005), and sharing a household with children in primary school (OR 3·4, 95% CI 1·2–9·5, P=0·008) with risk increasing with number of primary-school pupils in the household (χ2 for linear trend 6·47, P=0·01). We concluded that in a population with a low prevalence of hepatitis A, adults who live in the same household as primary-school-age children are at increased risk of acquiring the infection during community outbreaks.

FRom the point of view of industrial hygiene, it is important to estimate the occurrence of asthma, rhinitis vasomotoria and eczema and of the sensitization to flour amongst unselected groups of bread bakers, cake bakers and millers. For this purpose we have examined 262 flour workers, who formed the entire working staffs of certain bread bakeries, cake bakeries and milling companies in Amsterdam.

Transfer of shigella R–plasmids in vivo has seldom been demonstrated. Strains of Shigella dysenteriae type 1 and Shigella flexneri type 5b were isolated from a Bulgarian traveller who visited Vietnam and developed dysentery, which was treated with trimethoprim/sulfamethoxazole (TMP/SMZ) for a short time. Both species of shigellae are unusual in Bulgaria where strains of S. sonnei predominate. Both shigella strains were multiresistant to the same antimicrobial agents. Each strain contained a 48–kilobase plasmid that conferred the entire resistance phenotype to a susceptible Escherichia coli. Restriction endonuclease patterns of plasmid DNA from the respective strains were identical. Transmissible plasmids of the same resistance phenotypes and restriction patterns were isolated from the patient's colonic E. coli. Transconjugants hybridized to a dihydrofolate reductase type I–DNA probe. These studies support the hypothesis that R–plasmid transfer may occur between non-pathogenic, faecal strains and pathogenic shigellae, a process that may have been facilitated by inadequate treatment with TMP/SMZ at the onset of the illness.

Field observations supplemented by laboratory tests were carried out on the occurrence of myxomatosis at two sites with contrasting environments near the northern limit of rabbit infestation in Australia, during the period May 1952 to April 1953.

In spite of the very low incidence of cases of myxomatosis observed in wild rabbits during that period great reductions in the rabbit population occurred.

Analysis of the results of serum surveys indicates that myxomatosis was present and caused minor unobserved epizootics during this period, The overlap in this area of rabbit breeding and active transmission of myxomatosis probably led to a high death rate in the sub-adult rabbit population.

In spite of continued reintroduction of fully virulent standard virus into the areas, all strains of virus recovered were somewhat attenuated. There was a suggestion that at Texas the degree of attenuation increased during the study period.

Sex ratios and data on reproduction are presented for the 1488 rabbits shot at the two areas. Recovery from myxomatosis appeared to have no adverse effect on the fecundity of the female rabbit.

The main objective of this study was to assess whether the capacity of Neisseria meningitidis to release endotoxin depends upon the type of strain or upon bacterial mass. Endotoxin release was studied in 32 strains isolated from patients with meningococcal infections and in 49 from asymptomatic carriers, using a quantitative test (limulus test with a chromogenic substrate). The results show that the strains from patients release significantly higher amounts of endotoxin than strains from carriers regardless of serogroup and isolation site. No correlation was found between stage of bacterial growth and the amount of endotoxin liberated. These findings suggest that endotoxin liberation is a characteristic of certain strains of N. meningitidis and is not determined simply by bacterial mass.

Cyclospora cayetanensis is a parasite causing cyclosporiasis (an illness in humans). Produce (fruits, vegetables, herbs), water and soil contaminated with C. cayetanensis have been implicated in human infection. The objective was to conduct a scoping review of primary research in English on the detection, epidemiology and control of C. cayetanensis with an emphasis on produce, water and soil. MEDLINE® (Web of ScienceTM), Agricola (ProQuest), CABI Global Health, and Food Science and Technology Abstracts (EBSCOhost) were searched from 1979 to February 2020. Of the 349 relevant primary research studies identified, there were 75 detection-method studies, 40 molecular characterisation studies, 38 studies of Cyclospora in the environment (33 prevalence studies, 10 studies of factors associated with environmental contamination), 246 human infection studies (212 prevalence/incidence studies, 32 outbreak studies, 60 studies of environmental factors associated with non-outbreak human infection) and eight control studies. There appears to be sufficient literature for a systematic review of prevalence and factors associated with human infection with C. cayetanensis. There is a dearth of publicly available detection-method studies in soil (n = 0) and water (n = 2), prevalence studies on soil (n = 1) and studies of the control of Cyclospora (particularly on produce prior to retail (n = 0)).

1. One per cent of samples of farm milk were found to contain pathogenic varieties of Bacterium coli of the O groups associated with infantile gastroenteritis.

2. Unheated cows' milk is a dangerous food for babies.

3. Summer diarrhoea was probably, for the most part, milk-borne infection by special O groups of Bact. coli.

4. Thirteen per cent of chickens on farms were found to be excreting Bact. coli of the O groups associated with infantile gastro-enteritis but only a few of the strains possessed H antigens of varieties known to have an association with human disease.

5. Possible reservoirs of infection cannot be adequately searched for until a selective method is devised to aid the separation of pathogenic O groups of Bact. coli from the non-pathogenic.

In recent years, mycoplasma taxonomists have found that numerous mycoplasma strains from goats are serologically indistinguishable from Mycoplasma mycoides subsp. mycoides, the causative agent of contagious bovine pleuropneumonia (CBPP), by routinely used tests, e.g. the metabolism-and growth-inhibition tests. As a result, such organisms are now openly referred to as M. mycoides subsp. mycoides.

Seven of these so-called M. mycoides subsp. mycoides strains from goats were compared with two strains of M. mycoides subsp. mycoides from CBPP, and with one strain of M. mycoides subsp. capri, by means of two in-vivo tests, namely, (1) a test of the ability of each strain, injected intraperitoneally into mice, to produce mycoplasmaemia, and (2) a cross-protection test in mice. Of the seven strains, only one (‘O goat’) was indistinguishable from genuine M. mycoides subsp. mycoides; it also had small colonies resembling those of genuine M. mycoides subsp. mycoides. The other six were easily distinguished from genuine M. mycoides subsp. mycoides, and they produced large colonies. These six strains and others like them should no longer be given a name that fails to distinguish them from the causative agent of CBPP.

Cross-protection tests showed that the seven goat strains referred to above differed from M. mycoides subsp. capri.

Well water was sampled from all four major wards in Katsina town. All 20 samples taken showed high coliform counts. Sixty-five per cent contained ≥ 2400 coliforms per 100 ml while the remainder had counts ranging from 79 to 920. Faecal coliforms and non-cholera vibrios were detected in all samples. There was no significant relationship between the coliform counts and the distances of latrines to wells, water table to ground level, slope relationship between wells and latrines, the pH of water and whether the wells were left permanently open or not. Salmonella sp., Enterobacter sp. and Pseudomonas sp. were each isolated from about 10% of the samples, while Proteus sp. was isolated from 40%, Citrobacter sp. 15%, Alcaligenes sp. 5% and an unidentified Gram-negative rod from 5%.

Only 2 (10%) of the sampled households, representing 23 (9·6%) of the 239 people exposed to well-water had pipeborne water in addition. It was concluded that well water in Katsina town could be a human health hazard.

Mice, rats, guinea-pigs and rabbits were inoculated with isolates of Streptococcus suis type 2. An isolate cultured from the tonsils of a healthy pig, produced disease in rabbits after intravenous inoculation but not in mice, rats or guinea-pigs. An isolate of S. suis type 2, that was pathogenic for pigs and had been cultured from a human patient with clinical disease, produced signs of neurological disease in mice, rats and rabbits following intravenous inoculation. There was an apparent dose response in mice with 31 % of mice receiving more than 106 organisms developing clinical disease, whilst mice receiving less than this did not develop disease. There were no detectable histopathological lesions in the brains or meninges of mice with nervous signs. It is proposed that the disease in mice may mimic that reported in humans and that mice may be a useful indicator species for determining the virulence of isolates cultured from pigs.

In May 1991 an immunization programme against Haemophilus influenzae type b (Hib) infection began within the Oxford region. We validate a deterministic mathematical model of Hib by comparison with the incidence of disease in the Oxford region, 1985–97. The comparison of model results with observed outcome allows an exploration of some of the poorly understood properties of the immunization programme. Model results and observed incidence are consistent with a vaccine that blocks the acquisition of carriage. Similarly, the data suggest that factors other than experience of Hib carriage are likely to have generated acquired immunity to Hib disease prior to the introduction of vaccination. Hence it is unlikely that waning of vaccine-derived protection will result in a resurgence of disease. The inclusion in the immunization schedule of a booster dose, as used in other countries, would have provided very little extra benefit.

After instituting laboratory screening for Escherichia coli O157. H7, a Connecticut hospital isolated the organism from four persons in September 1993. As a result, an outbreak of E. coli O157.H7 associated with a country club was detected. The club had served hamburger from the same shipment at two picnics. Attendees of two picnics were interviewed, stool cultures were obtained from symptomatic persons, and the remaining hamburger was cultured. Twenty (22%) of 89 persons who ate hamburger became ill, compared with 1 of 60 who did not eat hamburger (relative risk = 13·5, 95% confidence interval 3·2–56·3). Among persons who ate hamburgers, illness was strongly associated with eating hamburger that was not thoroughly cooked (P < 0·001). All 20 samples from 5 remaining boxes of patties yielded E. coli O157.H7. Isolates from hamburger and case-patients were indistinguishable by pulsed-field gel electrophoresis. Heightened surveillance can rapidly identify outbreaks and may mitigate their impact. However, continued review of food safety issues is necessary if E. coli O157.H7 outbreaks are to be prevented.
