This article presents the derivation of a semi-classical model of electromagnetic-wave propagation in a non centro-symmetric crystal. It consists of Maxwell's equations for the wave field coupled with a version of Bloch's equations which takes fully into account the discrete symmetry group of the crystal. The model is specialized in the case of a KDP crystal for which information about the dipolar moments at the Bloch level can be recovered from the macroscopic dispersion properties of the material.

In this work we consider the dual-primal Discontinuous Petrov–Galerkin (DPG) method for the advection-diffusion model problem. Since in the DPG method both mixed internal variables are discontinuous,a static condensation procedure can becarried out, leading to a single-field nonconformingdiscretization scheme. For this latter formulation,we propose a flux-upwind stabilization technique to deal with the advection-dominated case. The resulting scheme is conservative and satisfies a discrete maximum principle under standard geometrical assumptions on the computational grid. A convergence analysis isdeveloped, proving first-order accuracy of the method in a discrete H 1-norm, and the numerical performance of the scheme is validated on benchmark problems with sharp internal and boundary layers.

We discuss new MUSCL reconstructions to approximate the solutions of hyperbolic systems of conservations laws on 2D unstructured meshes. To address such an issue, we write two MUSCL schemes on two overlapping meshes. A gradient reconstruction procedure is next defined by involving both approximations coming from each MUSCL scheme. This process increases the number of numerical unknowns, but it allows to reconstruct very accurate gradients. Moreover a particular attention is paid on the limitation procedure to enforce the required robustness property. Indeed, the invariant region is usually preserved at the expense of a more restrictive CFL condition. Here, we try to optimize this condition in order to reduce the computational cost.

We consider the numerical approximation of a first orderstationary hyperbolic equation by the method of characteristics with pseudo time step k using discontinuous finite elements on a mesh ${\cal T}_h$ . For this method, we exhibit a “natural” norm || ||h,k for which we show that the discrete variational problem $P_h^k$ is well posed and weobtain an error estimate. We show that when k goes to zero problem $(P_h^k)$ (resp. the || ||h,k norm)has as a limit problem (P h ) (resp. the || ||h norm) associated to the Galerkin discontinuousmethod. This extends to two and three space dimension our previous results obtained in one space dimension.

We propose a Diphasic Low Mach Number (DLMN) system for the modelling of diphasic flows without phase change at low Mach number, system which is an extension of the system proposed by Majda in [Center of Pure and Applied Mathematics, Berkeley, report No. 112] and [Combust. Sci. Tech.42 (1985) 185–205] for low Mach number combustion problems. This system is written for a priori any equations of state. Under minimal thermodynamic hypothesis which are satisfied by a large class of generalized van der Waals equations of state, we recover some natural properties related to the dilation and to the compression of bubbles. We also propose an entropic numerical scheme in Lagrangian coordinates when the geometry is monodimensional and when the two fluids are perfect gases. At last, we numerically show that the DLMN system may become ill-posed when the entropy of one of the two fluids is not a convex function.

The paper is concerned with the finite element solution of the Poisson equation with homogeneous Dirichlet boundary condition in a three-dimensional domain. Anisotropic, graded meshes from a former paper are reused for dealing with the singular behaviour of the solution in the vicinity of the non-smooth parts of the boundary. The discretization error is analyzed for the piecewise linear approximation in the H1(Ω)- and L2(Ω)-norms by using a new quasi-interpolation operator. This new interpolant is introduced in order to prove the estimates for L2(Ω)-data in the differential equation which is not possible for the standard nodal interpolant. These new estimates allow for the extension of certain error estimates for optimal control problems with elliptic partial differential equations and for a simpler proof of the discrete compactness property for edge elements of any order on this kind of finite element meshes.

We consider the problem of providing optimal uncertainty quantification (UQ) – and hencerigorous certification – for partially-observed functions. We present a UQ frameworkwithin which the observations may be small or large in number, and need not carryinformation about the probability distribution of the system in operation. The UQobjectives are posed as optimization problems, the solutions of which are optimal boundson the quantities of interest; we consider two typical settings, namely parametersensitivities (McDiarmid diameters) and output deviation (or failure) probabilities. Thesolutions of these optimization problems depend non-trivially (even non-monotonically anddiscontinuously) upon the specified legacy data. Furthermore, the extreme values are oftendetermined by only a few members of the data set; in our principal physically-motivatedexample, the bounds are determined by just 2 out of 32 data points, and the remaindercarry no information and could be neglected without changing the final answer. We proposean analogue of the simplex algorithm from linear programming that uses these observationsto offer efficient and rigorous UQ for high-dimensional systems with high-cardinalitylegacy data. These findings suggest natural methods for selecting optimal (maximallyinformative) next experiments.

A new class of nonparametric nonconforming quadrilateral finite elements is introducedwhich has the midpoint continuity and the mean value continuity at the interfaces ofelements simultaneously as the rectangular DSSY element [J. Douglas, Jr., J.E. Santos, D.Sheen and X. Ye, ESAIM: M2AN 33 (1999) 747–770.] Theparametric DSSY element for general quadrilaterals requires five degrees of freedom tohave an optimal order of convergence [Z. Cai, J. Douglas, Jr., J.E. Santos, D. Sheen andX. Ye, Calcolo 37 (2000) 253–254.], while the newnonparametric DSSY elements require only four degrees of freedom. The design of newelements is based on the decomposition of a bilinear transform into a simple bilinear mapfollowed by a suitable affine map. Numerical results are presented to compare the newelements with the parametric DSSY element.

This work deals with the study of some stratigraphic models for the formation of geological basins under a maximal erosion rate constrain. It leads to introduce differentialinclusions of degenerated hyperbolic-parabolic type $0\in \partial _{t}u-div\{H(\partial _{t}u+E)\nabla u\}$ , where H is the maximal monotonous graph of the Heaviside function and E is a given non-negative function. Firstly, we present the new and realistic models and an original mathematical formulation, taking into account the weather-limited rate constraint in the conservation law, with a unilateral constraint on the outflow boundary. Then, we give a study of the 1-D case with numerical illustrations.

In this paper we consider the numerical computation of the optimal costfunction associated to the problem that consists in finding the minimum ofthe maximum of a scalar functional on a trajectory. We present anapproximation method for the numerical solution which employs bothdiscretization on time and on spatial variables. In this way, we obtain afully discrete problem that has unique solution. We give an optimal estimatefor the error between the approximated solution and the optimal costfunction of the original problem. Also, numerical examples are presented.

We present a convergence analysis of a cell-based finite volume (FV) discretization scheme applied to a problem of control in the coefficients of a generalized Laplace equation modelling, for example, a steady state heat conduction. Such problems arise in applications dealing with geometric optimal design, in particular shape and topology optimization, and are most often solved numerically utilizing a finite element approach. Within the FV framework for control in the coefficients problems the main difficulty we face is the need to analyze the convergence of fluxes defined on the faces of cells, whereas the convergence of the coefficients happens only with respect to the “volumetric” Lebesgue measure. Additionally, depending on whether the stationarity conditions are stated for the discretized or the original continuous problem, two distinct concepts of stationarity at a discrete level arise.We provide characterizations of limit points, with respect to FV mesh size, of globally optimal solutions and two types of stationary points to the discretized problems. We illustrate the practical behaviour of our cell-based FV discretization algorithm on a numerical example.

In this paper we mathematically analyse an evolution variational inequality which formulates the double critical-state model for type-II superconductivity in 3D space and propose a finite element method to discretize the formulation. The double critical-state model originally proposed by Clem and Perez-Gonzalez is formulated as a model in 3D space which characterizes the nonlinear relation between the electric field, the electric current, the perpendicular component of the electric current to the magnetic flux, and the parallel component of the current to the magnetic flux in bulk type-II superconductor. The existence of a solution to the variational inequality formulation is proved and the representation theorem of subdifferential for a class of energy functionals including our energy is established. The variational inequality formulation is discretized in time by a semi-implicit scheme and in space by the edge finite element of lowest order on a tetrahedral mesh.The fully discrete formulation is an unconstrained optimisation problem.The subsequence convergence property of the fully discrete solution is proved. Some numerical results computed under a rotating applied magnetic field are presented.

The construction of a well-conditioned integral equation for iterative solution of scattering problems with a variable Leontovitch boundary condition is proposed. A suitable parametrix is obtained by using a new unknown and an approximation of the transparency condition. We prove the well-posedness of the equation for any wavenumber. Finally, some numerical comparisons with well-tried method prove the efficiency of the new formulation.

Error estimates for the mixed finite element solution of4th order elliptic problems with variable coefficients, which, in the particular case of aniso-/ortho-/isotropic plate bending problems, gives a direct, simultaneous approximation to bending moment tensorfield $\Psi= (\psi_{ij})_{1 \le i,j \le 2}$ and displacement field 'u', have been developed considering the combined effect of boundary approximation and numerical integration.

In this work we present new numerical methods to simulate the mechanics of head-tape magnetic storage devices. The elastohydrodynamic problem is formulated in terms of a coupled system which is governed by a nonlinear compressible Reynolds equation for the air pressure over the head, and a rod model for the tape displacement. A fixed point algorithm between the solutions of the elastic and hydrodynamic problems is proposed. For the nonlinear Reynolds equation, a characteristics method and a duality algorithm are developed to cope with the convection dominating and nonlinear diffusion features, respectively. Furthermore, in the duality method the convergence and optimal choice of the parameters are analyzed. At each fixed point iteration, in the elastic model a complementarity formulation is required and appropriate numerical techniques are used. For the spatial discretization different finite element spaces are chosen. Finally, numerical test examples illustrate the theoretical results, as well as the good performance in the simulation of real devices.

Taking the cue from stabilized Galerkin methods for scalar advection problems, we adaptthe technique to boundary value problems modeling the advection of magnetic fields. Weprovide rigorous a priori error estimates for both fully discontinuouspiecewise polynomial trial functions and -conforming finite elements.

The calculation of sound generation and propagation in low Mach number flows requires serious reflections on the characteristics of the underlying equations. Although the compressible Euler/Navier-Stokes equations cover all effects, an approximation via standard compressible solvers does not have the ability to represent acoustic waves correctly. Therefore, different methods have been developed to deal with the problem. In this paper, three of them are considered and compared to each other. They are the Multiple Pressure Variables Approach (MPV), the Expansion about Incompressible Flow (EIF) and a coupling method via heterogeneous domain decomposition. In the latter approach, the non-linear Euler equations are used in a domain as small as possible to cover the sound generation, and the locally linearized Euler equations approximated with a high-order scheme are used in a second domain to deal with the sound propagation. Comparisons will be given in construction principles as well as implementational effort and computational costs on actual numerical examples.

Lower and upper bounds for the Rayleigh conductivity of a perforation in a thick plate are usually derived from intuitive approximations and by physical reasoning. This paper addresses a mathematical justification of these approaches. As a byproduct of the rigorous handling of these issues, some improvements to previous bounds for axisymmetric holes are given as well as new estimates for tilted perforations. The main techniques are a proper use of the Dirichlet and Kelvin variational principlesin the context of Beppo-Levi spaces. The derivations are validated by numerical experiments in 2D for the axisymmetric case as well as for the full three-dimensional problem.

We propose here a model and a numerical scheme to compute the motionof rigid particles interacting through the lubrication force. In thecase of a particle approaching a plane, we propose an algorithm andprove its convergence towards the solutions to the gluey particle modeldescribed in [B. Maury, ESAIM: Proceedings18 (2007)133–142]. We propose a multi-particle version ofthis gluey model which is based on the projection of the velocitiesonto a set of admissible velocities. Then, we describe a multi-particle algorithmfor the simulation of such systems and present numerical results.
