Developmental studies in infancy remain rare. Studies measuring depressive symptoms in gifted children are contradictory, considering more anxiety or depression than in non-gifted children. Furthermore, questionnaires or anxiety scales are used without taking into account all aspects of mood disorders and thus, rarely depression scales have been conducted.

To refine the developmental trajectory of depression in a national sample of French gifted children by identification of the specific risk and protective factors.

A self-reported depression scale MDI-C (Multiscore-Depression-Inventory-for-Children) were sent to families to be administered to their gifted children from preschool to high school, aged from 4 to 20 years-old (IQ >125) looking for help from gifted associations. A larger wave of data collection on different aspects of child and family history was collected (pregnancy, term and delivery mode, neonatal period, psychomotor development, health, schooling, interpersonal relationships with family and friends, personality, parental socio-economic status).

438 children (> 130) were eligible. Regarding anamnestic fields, Exploratory-Factor-Analysis highlighted six predictive factors of depression with eigenvalues from 1.09 to 3.17. Major factors explaining 62.96% of total variance are: Factor-1 “motor skills disorder” (14.53%). Factor-2 “positive family relationships” (14.04%). Factor-3 “positive social relationships with peers” (14.02%). Factor-4 “integration of social codes” (11.23%). Factor-6 “Learning disabilities and rehabilitation” (10.1%).

Our findings highlight specifics risk factors of depression in the field of learning disabilities or social cognition, while a good quality of social relationships since childhood seems to be a preventive factor.

Insomnia is strongly associated with Major depressive disorders (MDD). There is strong evidence that it is one of the risk factor for suicide. Studies have shown the relationship of suicidal behavior in MDD patients with insomnia. However, it has not been evaluated in a large inpatient sample.

To evaluate suicidality in MDD patients with insomnia compared to those without insomnia.

From the National Inpatient Sample (NIS 2006-2015) database using ICD-9 code, we obtained patients with the primary diagnosis of MDD and comorbid diagnosis of insomnia disorders (MDD+S). We compared it with MDD patients without insomnia disorders (MDD-S) by performing a 1:2 match for primary diagnosis code in the unweighted dataset. Suicidal ideation/attempt data were compared between the groups by multivariate logistic regression analysis.

After the diagnostic code matching, 139061 patients were included in the MDD+S group and 276496 patients in the MDD- S group. MDD+S patients were older (47 years vs 45 years, p < 0.001) compared to the MDD-S group. Prevalence of Suicidal ideation/attempt was 56.0% in the MDD+S group and 42.0% in the MDD-S group (p < 0.001). After adjusting for age, sex, and race, MDD+S was associated with 1.8 times higher odds of suicidal behavior compared to the MDD-S group. (Odds ratio: 1.79, 95% confidence interval 1.68-1.91, p < 0.001).

Insomnia in MDD patients is significantly associated with the risk of suicide. It is important to be watchful for insomnia in MDD patients.

Cases of psychosis are being reported in people infected by the SARS-CoV-2 virus. The relationship between psychosis and corticosteroids treatment is well known. However, there are relatively limited data so far correlating psychosis and SARS-CoV-2.

To describe a case of manic psychosis in a 55-year-old woman treated with corticosteroids for COVID-19 infection. Discuss the etiopathogenic factors involved in psychosis in patients infected by COVID-19.

We present the case of a 55-year-old woman, without previous psychiatric history, who was admitted to psychiatry due to a psychotic episode with maniac symptoms. Three weeks earlier, the patient had been admitted to Internal Medicine for bilateral SArs-CoV2 pneumonia, under treatment with high doses of corticosteroids. The patient presents a verbose and salty speech, euphoric mood with hyperergia, subjective increase of capacities, insomnia and delusional ideation with mystical-spiritual content with delusional interpretations and auditory hallucinations. The patient comes from Ukraine and she has been living in Spain for 20 years. She works as a household assistant. The patient relates various psychosocial stressors throughout her life.

Complementary diagnostic tests were without alterations. Low-dose antipsychotic treatment is prescribed, with a rapid recovery within a week. Finally, the patient showed complete insight of the episode and was discharged from the hospital being asymptomatic.

It would be interesting to publish the reported cases of psychosis and infection by COVID-19 as well as to investigate the etiopathogenic factors that may be contributing to the development of psychosis in patients infected by the virus.

Several studies have mentioned the link between psychotrauma and psychosis. A direct causal link remains to be discussed.

Evaluate the link between sexual abuse and psychosis.

We report the case of a male patient who developed schizophrenia following sodomy rape. We performed a literature review based on a PubMed search with the following keywords: “rape sodomy psychosis”.

Mr. M., 26 years old, with a personal psychiatric history of chronic psychosis evolving for 10 years, consulted us for follow-up of his schizophrenia. When he was 16, the patient was raped by sodomy by a 40-year-old man under stabbing threat. After this incident, the patient did not verbalize this trauma, he isolated himself, became irritable and aggressive and has had olfactory hallucinations. The symptomatology worsened until the age of 24 when the patient presented a delusional syndrome with a theme of persecution, mysticism, bewitchment by a mechanism of interpretation and visual hallucinations. Then,he was hospitalized in psychiatry for psychomotor instability, verbal hetero-aggression. He had been diagnosed with schizophrenia evolving over 9 years. Treatment with an antipsychotic: risperidone and valproic acid was started. The evolution was quickly favorable but the patient currently presents blunted affect, a sexual disinterest and a strong desire for revenge from his rapist. Treatment adjustment and psychotherapy would be considered.

The onset of subsequent rape psychosis and the persistence of symptoms related to the trauma are arguments in favor of a direct causal link between sexual abuse and schizophrenia.

Binge eating disorder (BED) is the most prevalent specific eating disorder. It is characterized by recurrent episodes of binge eating and is associated with feelings of shame and a lack of control. Internet-based treatments are gaining increasing attention as a way to reach more patients with evidence based treatments In 2020 we conducted a preliminary analysis on the effectiveness of an internet-based cognitive behavioural therapy treatment project (Jensen ES, Linnet, J, Holmberg TT, Tarp K, Nielsen JH, Lichtenstein MB. Effectiveness of internet-based guided self-help for binge-eating disorder and characteristics of completers versus noncompleters. Int J Eat Disord. 2020;1-6. https://doi.org/10.1002/eat.23384).

This study aims to update the analyses on treatment effect with the patients who have completed treatment in the year following the last data extraction.

The iBED treatment project is a 10-session psychologist guided internet-based self-help program based on cognitive behavioural therapy. When applying for treatment and upon completion patients respond to a survey containing, among other scales, the eating disorder examination-questionnaire (EDE-Q), binge eating disorder-questionnaire (BED-Q) and various sociodemographic questions. Data will be extracted from the treatment project in anonymized form for analyses.

The preliminary analyses were conducted on 36 completers. These showed large standardized effect sizes on both the EDE-Q subscales (Cohens d ranging from .88-1.65) and on the BED-Q (d = 1.38). The updated effectiveness analyses will be presented at the conference. We expect approximately 70-80 patients to have completed treatment at this time.

Results will be discussed and presented at the conference.

APA describes Gender dysphoria (GD) as the conflict between a person’s physical or assigned gender and the gender with which he/she/they identify. Recently DSM-V renamed gender identity disorder as “gender dysphoria”. This change in terminology removes the ‘pathology’ from being transgender, which is not a mental health condition.

To systematically summarise available evidence in this important but less researched field.

A comprehensive review was carried using the PubMed/ Medline database.

Formal epidemiological studies of gender dysphoria in children and adolescents have not been conducted. The true prevalence os gender dysphoria is unknown around the world because of the varying definitions, different cultural norms and lack of data. Individuals who identify as transgender are vulnerable, and have higher rates of psychiatric comorbility compared with the general population. Gender dysphoria, gender identity disorder or transsexualism is a psychological condition that requires care and multiple health professionals.

The natural history of gender identity for children who express gender nonconforming or transgender identities is an area of active research. In addition, there is a lack of guidelines to approach these patients.

Traditional methods of preventing the deviant behavior in adolescents are aimed at clinical variants of certain forms of deviant behavior.

The study included 160 teenagers with depression.

Study design included: Depression Test, Projective Drawing Tests, Pathoharacterological Diagnostic; Package of AUDIT tests for the diagnosis of dependent behavior.

Symptoms of depressive behavior disorder in adolescents depending on age and gender were identified: in girls aged 12-14 – autoaggression, food disorders and suicidal behavior; in boys aged 12-14 – gaming, internet addiction; in boys aged 15-18 – gambling, drug addiction and smoking. Anxiety of younger teenagers turns into a chronic anxiety-dreary depression, with frequent attacks behavioral disorders.

The use of technology makes it possible to identify informative imprinting of stereotypical behavior and the locus of the therapeutic window, provide medical and psychological support for adolescents with depressive disorders and the quality of social functioning, provide primary and secondary prevention of depression progression and the formation of dependent behavior.

The characteristics of the Autistic Spectrum Disorder involve deficits in social communication and repetitive patterns of behavior and that there is a growing interest in the use of new technologies for neurorehabilitation.

This research aimed to verify the possibility of using Virtual reality for the treatment of Autism.

Scientific publications were selected from the PUBMED, ScieLO, LILACS and Google Scholar databases, written in Portuguese and English, with free access, between 2014 and 2019.

A total of 19 publications were identified. Concerning their design, 26,3% of them were experimental, 21,1% qualitative, 21,1% one-group pretest-posttest, 15,8% quasi-experimental, 10,5% descriptive and 5,2% of them were exploratory research studies. The studies focus on anxiety and phobias reduction, as well as teaching strategies to deal with stessful events. Eleven of the studies focused on the enhancement of independende and sef-confidence of the subjects. In five ot the studies the virtual reality was used with other technologies. In two of them the EEG was used along with virtual reality for detecting the cerebral region in activity during action.

Virtual reality was defended in most of the studies because it can provide a safe environment and offering high control of variables. Although the results indicate the use of virtual reality for the reduction of anxiety and the promotion of self-confidence and independence which aims the social deficits in autism, more research is needed to investigate the use or impact of VR on repetitive behavior.

Traumatic brain injury (TBI) is a leading cause of morbidity and mortality, giving rise to a variety of neuropsychiatric syndromes associated with great functional impairments, chronic disability and poor quality of life. Depending on diagnostic criteria, 20-90% of victims of TBI develop at least one neuropsychiatric manifestation in the first month, and about 40% present at least three symptoms during three months, with higher incidence in females. Survivors of TBI are at increased risk for development of severe, long-term psychiatric disorders. The aetiology of these disturbances remains unclear.

To review current knowledge on the neuropsychiatric consequences associated with TBI.

Non-systematic review of literature through search on PubMed/MEDLINE database for publications up to 2020, following the terms “traumatic brain injury” and “neuropsychiatry”.

Although the experience of neuropsychiatric symptoms may be temporary and may resolve in the acute period, many patients with TBI can experience psychopathology that is persistent or that develops in the post-acute period, regardless of injury severity. These symptoms can involve personality changes, psychosis, major depression, generalized anxiety disorder, post-traumatic stress disorder, maladaptive social behaviours, poor disability adjustment, reduced coping skills and cognitive impairment. Evidence remains insufficient to conclude the role of TBI-related neuropathological consequences in the development of post-TBI neuropsychiatric disorder. Non-organic factors are also implicated in its generation and maintenance.

Neuropsychiatric sequelae are common following TBI. Several of these syndromes are amenable to treatment. Further investigations are required to better understand the mechanistic aetiology of these conditions and the effectiveness of therapeutic modalities.

COVID19 outbreak had affected physical and mental health of individuals. Different adverse health behaviors had worsened and eating disorders had evolved. Health care workers were not spared.

To screen binge eating disorder among health care workers of regional hospital of Gabes (south of Tunisia) and its associated factors.

We conducted a cross-sectional, descriptive and analytical study, from April 19, 2020, to May 5, 2020 on 289 in Gabes regional Hospital. All healthcare workers were included (n=620). Workers who were on sick leave during the study were excluded. During this period, the total confirmed cases of COVID-19 exceeded 900 cases in Tunisia and around 20 cases in Gabes. We used a self-administered anonymous questionnaire containing sociodemographic and clinical data. DSM-5 diagnostic criteria were used to assess Binge-Eating Disorder.

Of the 289 responding participants, 85 were physicians (29%), 166 nurses (57.4%), 8 ambulance drivers (2.8%) and 30 health-related administrators (10.3%). A total of 100 participants (34.6%) were frontline health care workers directly engaged in diagnosing, treating or caring for patients with coronavirus disease. Nine percent of participants experienced binge eating disorder during the outbreak. Binge eating disorders were associated to past psychiatric history of eating disorder (p=0.001), social isolation (p=0.001), increased consumption of tea and coffee (p=0.02) and the fact of being a frontline care giver (p=0.009).

Binge eating disorders are usually associated with health problems: obesity and consequently severe form of coronavirus disease. Screening those disorders is important to alleviate its physical impact.

Delusional parasitosis (DP), also know as Ekbom syndrome and in some cases as Morgellons, was first described in the late 17th century in France. It is an obsessive phobic state in which the patient believes that the is infested by parasites. In the hallucinatory state, they frequently remove parts of the skin, identifying them as parasites. The cause of DP is unknown. Evidence supporting the dopamine theory defend that the inhibition of dopamine reuptake (for example cocaine and amphetamines) induce symptoms such as formication.

Through the description of the following clinical case, we emphasize its clinical features and complexities.

Review of DP in light of a clinical case

A 48-year-old woman was brought to the psychiatric emergency due to psychotic symptoms following cocaine use. She had a history of drug abuse. She was apparently asymptomatic until October 2019, when, in the background of vague sensation of something crawling under his skin, she developed a sudden onset belief that she had been infested by insects that crawled under his skin. Previous medical observation found no reason for a skin infection or infestation. Skin examination revealed itch marks and skin excoriations in the abdomen. Mental status examination revealed anxious and depressive affect, delusion of parasitosis, tactile hallucination and impaired insight. Routine hemogram and urinalysis was unremarkable, except for the detection of cocaine.

Delusional parasitosis often presents to nonpsychiatric medical professionals. An awareness of such ilness, with an early recognition and timely referral are management cornerstones in order to successfully diagnose and treat patients.

Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) is characterized by the presence of obsessive thoughts and recurring compulsive acts. The prevalence is 1-3% in the general population. The treatment consists of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) alone, or in combination with antidepressants.

Provide an overview of the elements of CBT in this disease and the techniques used.

The authors did a non-systematic review in Pubmed with the words: “Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder” and “Cognitive Behavioral Therapy”.

According to the cognitive-behavioral model model, in this disease intrusive thoughts arise spontaneously, normally and universally, interrupting the normal flow of thought. They are usually neutral and form the basis for vulnerable people to develop obsessive problems. CBT uses techniques that aim to correct dysfunctional thoughts and beliefs, as well as behavioral techniques that aim to change compulsive behaviors. It aims to help people to come to the conclusion that the problem is not in the intrusive thoughts, but in the meaning they attribute to them, and in the various strategies they adopt to try to control them. It basically follows the following steps - patient assessment, through one or more semi-structured interviews; initial phase that includes the assessment of motivation for treatment and psychoeducation; intermediate phase, with the continuation of monitored exercises and reinforcement of cognitive and behavioral techniques; discharge, with discharge preparation working on relapse prevention and maintenance therapy.

Currently, CBT is considered the first-line therapy for the treatment of this disorder, however some patients are still refractory, and very little is known about its predictors of response.

Benzodiazepines (BZD) are psychotropic drugs prescribed in psychiatry for their anxiolytic, hypnotic and sedative properties. Since anxiety, agitation and insomnia are common in psychoses and mood disorders, BZDs are frequently prescribed in the treatment of these pathologies. Guidelines remain rare with regard to the use of BZDs in the treatment of psychosis and bipolar disorder.

Our study aimed to evaluate BZDs prescribing practices in psychoses and bipolar disorder and to assess the specific risks related to the use of these molecules in the population suffering from severe mental disorder.

This is a descriptive cross-sectional study conducted through a Google-forms self-administered questionnaire, intended for psychiatrists and psychiatric residents, over a period of two months, from April 1 to May 31, 2019.

One hundred physicians practicing in psychiatry answered our questionnaire. The response rate was 28%. BZDs were prescribed during thymic or psychotic relapses by 88.6% of the participants. During relapses, the main indication for BZDs was anxiety (81.3%), insomnia (80.2%), and catatonia (59.4%). Among the participants, 24.8% indicated that they maintained a long-term treatment with BZDs in patients with psychosis, and 11.4%in patients with bipolar disorder. The participants estimated that the long-term use of BZDs in patients with severe mental disorder represented an increased risk of : dependence (94.3%), behavioral disinhibition (30.5%), suicide (22.9%), anger, hostility and violence (31.4%).

Few guidelines concern the use of BZDs in psychosis and bipolar disorder. However, this prescription remains very frequent in current practice, with clinical and therapeutic features specific to this population.

Disruptive behaviours underpin the most prevalent and costly psychiatric disorders in youth including ADHD and conduct disorder. Yet the association between childhood behavioural problems and economic and social outcomes in adulthood are rarely examined in a population-based samples where early detection and prevention may be possible.

To examine the association childhood behavioural problems and economic and social outcomes from age 18-35 years across three studies.

This study daws on 30-year Canadian birth cohort (n=3017) linked to government tax return records. Behavioural assessments – for inattention, hyperactivity, opposition, aggression, anxiety and prosociality – were prospectively obtained from teachers when children were aged 6-12 years. Regression models were used to link behavioural assessments in kindergarten (age 5/6 years) to earnings at age 33-35 years (Study 1) and to trajectories of welfare receipt (Study 2), while behaviour at age 10-12 years was linked to trajectories of partnering. Children’s IQ and family background were adjusted for.

Inattention, aggression-opposition (males only) and low low-prosociality in kindergarten were associated with lower earnings at age 33-35 years (Study 1), inattention, aggression-opposition and low prosociality in kindergarten predicted following a chronic welfare receipt trajectory from age 18-35 (Study 2), and inattention, aggression-opposition, anxiety and low-prosociality at age 10-12 years were associated with increased likelihood of being unpartnered and with partnership dissolution from age 18-35 years (Study3).

Behavioural assessments made by schoolteachers can identify children at risk of adverse economic and social outcomes in adulthood. The implications of for early screening and prevention will be discussed.

The diagnosis of depression and identifying the factors affecting it in patients with high levels of hospitalization is necessary. Evaluating the prevalence of depression in this population is difficult, because some of the symptoms in depression and medical illness are similar and it is probable the diagnosis of depression to be missed in this patients.

The purpose of this study was to investigate the prevalence of depression and factors affecting it in patientsadmitted to the CCU of the Persian Gulf hospital in BandarabbasCity.

This study was performed on 133 patients admitted to the Persian Gulf Hospital. After obtainingconsent from patients, depression was recorded based on Beck questionnaire (BDI-II). Demographic data was registered from hospital chart review, and patient interview. Chi-Square and Mann-Whitney tests were used to compare the data.

Our results showed that the prevalence of depressionwas significant in CCU patients. 14.3% of CCU patients had moderate to severe depression and 54.59% had mild depression and only 30.8% were normal. Our study also demonstrated that there was a direct and significant relationship between depression and age, low education level, unemployment and length of hospitalization. (P <0.05)

Considering the high prevalence of depression in CCU patients, it is necessary to identify and perform therapeutic measures in patients at high risk for mental illness.

The governments of various countries enforced a lockdown to contain the COVID -19 pandemic. As the colleges remain closed, the academic teachings for students was conducted online. The mobile phone remained the main source for academics and entertainment during this period.

To assess patterns of use of mobile phone by Medical Undergraduate students prior to and during the COVID-19 lockdown. To assess Nomophobia among same participants.

This study was done by an online survey method after obtaining approval from the Institutional Ethics Committee. A validated questionnaire on patterns of mobile phone use and the Nomophobia Questionnaire(NMP-Q) was completed by the medical students (n=187) who consented to participate in the study

Prior to the pandemic lockdown, 52.9% of the participants used the mobile phones for 2-4 hours per day with 78% of the usage in social media. During lockdown, 89.3% of the participants reported an increase in the usage of mobile phones. 35.65% reported an increase in use by 2-4 hours everyday. About 30.5 % used the mobile phone for 6-8 hours per day. 80.2 % reported a maximum usage for social media. 59.45% reported a maximum usage for online academics. 33.7% frequently checked their phones once in 15 minutes. About 60.43% of the participants were in the moderate and 21.4% in the severe category of nomophobia.

There is an increase in mobile phone usage during the lockdown with a significant proportion of students in the moderate and severe category of nomophobia.

Adaptive thinking demands a balance between manifestations of intrapsychic activity and reliance on requirements of the outer reality. Features of responses to Rorschach’s III card could provide information about subject’s ability to preserve the dialectical tension between the two poles of external and internal realities during solving tasks related to interpersonal relationships.

To compare reality-fantasy relations during Rorschach’s III card responding in patients with schizophrenia, neurocognitive impairment and normal subjects.

Participants were 12 young adult inpatients with schizophrenia, 14 students without mental disorders and 12 inpatients with neurodegenerative diseases of old age. Reality-Fantasy Scale (RFS) was applied to assess responses to Rorschach’s III card. RFS scale ranges from –5 (reality collapse into fantasy) to 5 (fantasy collapse into reality) (Tibon-Czopp et al., 2015).

Patients with schizophrenia (M= –3,38, SD= 1,9) demonstrated tendency to fantasy domination (and reality collapse) if compared with the students (M= –1,47, SD= 2,0, p<0,05). Patients with neurodegenerative diseases (M= 0,75, SD= 2,1), conversely, had difficulties to apply fantasy during solving Rorschach task (p<0,01).

Express Rorschach testing using III card could be useful to provide screening data of thinking tendencies related to situations of social interaction. Also it provides a mental pabulum regarding role of cognitive impairment in schizophrenia in relation to significance of affective dependence of their thinking process.

Disulfiram is an alcohol detox drug that has been approved by the FDA for over 50 years. Among the various side effects that can cause there is encephalopathy. Its incidence is currently unknown, according to some authors it is estimated between 1 and 20%.

In this article we report the case of a 48-year-old woman diagnosed with borderline personality disorder and alcohol use disorder, presenting with encephalopathy.

We discuss about our diagnostic and therapeutic approach.

Fortunately, the rapid identification of this rare condition led to a favorable outcome in our patient.

Early detection of any acute change in mental state, especially in early stage of therapy, is important. Cessation of disulfiram is recommended in case of suspicion about disulfiram encephalopathy. This case underscores the importance of awareness of this serious complication during disulfiram treatment. If suspected early, appropriate diagnosis and treatment can prevent rapid progression.

Adherence to antiretroviral therapy is a key factor in predicting the success or failure of treatment. Data suggest that the status of mental health and especially depression of people living with HIV can affect adherence to antiretroviral therapy.

The purpose of this study was to assess the mental health status of people living with HIV, to record adherence to antiretroviral therapy and to investigate whether mental health affects adherence to antiretroviral therapy.

A cross-sectional mixed observational correlation study in a sample of 112 HIV-positive individuals was conducted. The Simplified Medication Adherence Questionnaire (SMAQ) was used to assess adherence to antiretroviral therapy, the Beck Depression Inventory (BDI) was used to assess depression, and the WHOQOL – BREF tool was used to assess mental health.

The results of the study showed that 58.93% of patients were found to be non-adherent to antiretroviral therapy. Furthermore, according to the BDI scale, 10.7% of patients experienced marginal clinical depression, 10.7% experienced moderate levels of depression and 2.7% experienced severe or very severe levels of depression. Further, people living with HIV had a moderate level of mental health (M = 3.40, SD = 0.58).

Our study showed that a high percentage of people living with HIV are non-adherent to antiretroviral therapy. Factors that are possibly associated with decreased adherence are mental health and especially depression. Psychological support for people living with HIV and anti-depressant prevention programs could increase adherence to antiretroviral therapy.
