Of the abounding Trilobites which mark the faunas of the Lower and Middle Palæozoic rocks few survive into the Upper Palæozoic. Three genera, if indeed they really deserve that name, have been described from the Carboniferous beds in England—Phillipsia, Griffithides and Brachymetopus. Only the first of these is yet known to occur in American Palæozoic strata. But on the other hand two species of Proetus have been announced from America—a genus not yet recognized in England. It is true that the distinctions are so slight that possibly these last might be as correctly referred to Phillipsia as to Proetus.

During a study of a Carboniferous blastoid fauna from Grassington, Yorkshire, over a thousand blastoids were collected, of which 45 individuals were referred to the genus Codaster. This study has left no doubt that the two species Codaster acutus McCoy and Codaster trilobatus McCoy are synonymous. Codaster trilobatus (in the sense of McCoy's original description), is an old age form, its characteristic feature only being attained by a minority of long-lived individuals. Codaster acutus McCoy is the valid name, being the first described, and is also the type-species for the genus. In order to supplement observation on these specimens, biometrical methods have been employed to study the relative growth of the height, diameter, and number of hydrospires.

The idler picking up pebbles on the sea-shore, and the geologist breaking stones in a gravel-pit, frequently meet with banded flints, which display their markings like a painting on the smoothly fractured internal surface, or, in other cases, in the form of lines more or less deeply engraved on the exterior by the action of the weather. The bands seen in section are often accompanied by discolorations of fanciful shape, in which imaginative people find pictures of their friends and others.

For many years palæontologists have anxiously awaited the reconstruction of the complete skeleton of Diprotodon by Dr. E. C. Stirling, Mr. Zietz, and their colleagues in the South Australian Museum. In 1893, when it was announced that numerous nearly complete skeletons of this gigantic extinct marsupial had been discovered in the arid interior of South Australia, it was hoped that all details of its osteology would soon be known; but the difficulties of excavating and transporting the fragile bones, and the skill and patience needed in preparing them after they reached the Museum in Adelaide, were so considerable as to necessitate long delay in obtaining satisfactory results. At last, however, a mounted reproduction of a skeleton has been completed in plaster, and Dr. Stirling has published three excellent photographs of the specimen in the “Report of the Board of Governors of the Public Library, Museum, and Art Gallery of South Australia for 1905–6,” lately received. The Governors of the South Australian Museum have given a copy of this restoration to the University of Cambridge, where it is now mounted in the Museum of Zoology. They have also generously presented to the British Museum a set of actual limb-bones and caudal vertebræ, with sufficient plaster casts to complete the reconstructed skeleton which is shown in Plate XV. As this restoration differs in some respects from that in Adelaide, it appears to need a brief explanation.

The lectotypes of the Devonian tabulate corals Roemeria infundibulifera (Goldfuss), Roemeripora minor (Schlüter) and Fovosites goldfussi d'Orbigny are redescribed from new thin sections. It is confirmed that Roemeria Edwards & Haime and Roemeripora Kraicz are best regarded as two separate genera of the Roemeriidae Pocta and that R. minor is best referred to Roemeripora. It is shown that internal characters of the lectotype of F. goldfussi are reasonably consistent with those taken as diagnostic for the species by Jones (1936) and Lecompte (1936, 1939).

An abnormal specimen of Dictyonema flabelliforme showing close-set bifurcation of the branches in a portion of the distal mesh is described and figured, and possible interpretations are considered.

By correlating the head and the tail of Professor G. P. Merrill's “Discussion on the use of the terms Rock-weathering, Serpentinization, and Hydrometaraorphism,” I infer a direct invitation to confer with him on the questions raised by me at the Bristol meeting of the British Association.

An area is described in which the main rock type is a variable dioritic rock, thought to have been formed by the expulsion of the residual acidic liquid from a largely crystalline quartz-diorite magma. It contains xenoliths of pyroxenite and appinite. The latter consist largely of hornblende, with some diopside, quartz, orthoclase microperthite and oligoclase. They are considered to be the reaction products of the outer margin of a magma and the adjacent calcareous country rock.

During the preparation and arrangement of a series of Lovenia forbesi from the Australian Miocene (presented to the Geological Department by Professor F. J. Cole), a peculiar interambulacral structure was displayed. Two of the specimens are severely weathered, with the result that their surfaces are smooth (except for the areolæ of the large tubercles), while the sutures are clearly outlined in dark brown across the pale background of the plates. In this way there is revealed the surprising fact that plate-crushing and resorption, of a type similar to that often found in Echinoid ambulacra, occur in four of the interambulacral areas. There is no corresponding development in the ambulacra.

IT is not surprising that the earlier geological writers on the district north and west of the Silurian and other hills of Lakeland, and between the River Caldew and the Solway, should have arrived at diverse conclusions as to the affinities of certain sandstones and shales of reddish or purple-grey tint, which are now known to occur at various horizons in the Carboniferous series. For this district presents unusual difficulties to an understanding of the disposition of the rocks beneath the Glacial Drift.

Zoarium always encrusting, with a very strong tendency to linear and in particular transversely linear arrangement, the great regularity of occurrence and the smallness of the avicularia being unsuited to the quincuncial arrangement usual among the Escharidæ.

An exceedingly well-preserved and nearly complete skeleton of the largest species of Dinornis, D. maximus, has recently been mounted and exhibited in the Palæontological Galleries of the British Museum (Natural History). The finding of this fine specimen has been described by its fortunate discoverer, Mr. C. A. Ewen, and to his paper a brief account of the remains themselves was added by Captain Hutton.
