Rather than a true adaptive process, laboratory colonization is proposed to depend on the plasticity of the tolerance limits in insect species. Insects will establish successfully in captivity if the magnitude of environmental variables are within the insects' ranges of colonization. Optimum physiological and behavioural responses are obtained when the variables are within the smaller preferred range of colonization. Other concomitant processes at colonization are selection, acclimatization and domestication. Definition of the terms “adaptation”, “acclimatization” and “domestication”, commonly misused in describing processes during laboratory colonization are proposed.

When reared in the greenhouse, the rice skipper, Pelopidas mathias (F.) (Lepidoptera: Hesperiidae), laid 2–3 times fewer eggs than Held collected females held under the same conditions. Adult-emergence and mating/oviposition cages may have to be placed in environmental chambers with controlled temperature and photoperiod to achieve normal mating and oviposition. Rearing required a mating'oviposition-cage at least 3 m3 in volume and honey as sustenance. Eggs and larvae were held in larval rearing cages and pupae were removed and held in adult emergence cages. Maximum oviposition occurred at dawn. The total developmental period from egg to adult was 34.7 days. P. mathias demonstrated a greater oviposition preference for rice and Paspalum conjugatum Berg, than for Dactyloctenium aegyptium (L.) Willd. P. mathias successfully developed to adulthood on all 24 species of Poaceae tested, exclusive of rice, but did not survive on the six species of Cyperaceae tested. Low populations of P. mathias in rice can be attributed to its low fecundity, wide host range, and equal adaptability to upland and lowland environments, thus diluting its number.

Time-specific life tables were constructed for the Mexican beetle, Zygogramma bicolorata Pallister (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae), which is a promising biological control agent of the Neotropical weed, Parthenium hysterophorus L. (Asteraceae) in and around Bangalore, India. Infertility of eggs (46.00–71.10%) was found to be the key mortality factor, followed by death during the pupal stage (15.76–21.38%), as confirmed by key mortality factor analysis and construction of survivorship curves. No parasitoids or predators were recorded on this insect, while some of the dead pupae/pre-pupae (2.27–17.24%) were found to be infected by Metarhizium anisopliae (Metchnikoff) Sorokin. The high generation trend values (305.88–557.14), give an indication of the biotic potential of this insect, which was found to cause rapid defoliation of the weed under field conditions.

The use of incompatible males (IM) of (A) mating type to suppress the Iraqi (B) strain of Ephestia cautella, when the release ratio was 80:1:1 (A males: B males: B females, respectively), brought about a highly successful protection of uncovered loose dates against infestation with (B) strain in a simulated date store. Surprisingly the protection effect of IMs lasted for 230 days which commercially covers almost the whole period of date storage.

Since strain A males are believed to compete poorly against wild strain B males, the competitiveness of F1 males was measured in order to determine if they might be promising candidates for subsequent trials of the control of E. cautella by the release of incompatible males.

Leaf extractables/fractions obtained from the leaves of soybean PI 227687 showed greater antifeedant activity towards the third-instar larvae of the cabbage looper, Trichoplusia ni (Hub.). Extraction of leaves with ethyl acetate followed by 60% methanol, and counter-current partitioning of leaf extractables between ethyl acetate, water and hexane was not convenient for isolation of antifeedants. Methanol (60%) in water extracted most of the antifeedants from leaves, and this extract when partitioned between ethyl acetate and water (the latter repeatedly extracted with the former), concentrated the antifeedants from soybean leaves for further processing on thin layer chromatography or high performance liquid chromatography.

There were quantitative differences in ethyl acetate fraction of PI 227687 (6%) and Davis (3.2%), and in flavonoids resolved at Rf 0.10–0.20 in benzene: ethyl acetate: methanol (4:3:3). Most of the flavonoids with antifeedant activity resolved at Rf 0.10–0.80. The antifeedant activity of flavonoid bands from PI 227687 was greater than the corresponding bands of Davis.

Sorghum is one of the most important cereal crops in West Africa, and the head bug, Eurystylus immaculatus Odh. (Hemiptera: Miridae) is the key pest of grain sorghum in this region. A range of sorghum genotypes were evaluated for resistance to sorghum head bug at Sotuba (Mali) and Kamboinse (Burkina Faso). Genotypes CSM 388, IS 14332, Malisor 84–7, Sakoika, S 29 and Kamboinse local were resistant to head bugs, both under natural and headcage screening. Head bug resistant genotypes had a lower percentage of head bug damaged grain. The food quality of head bug damaged grain was very poor and unacceptable.

Cultivar non-preference was identified as a component of resistance to head bugs, and CSM 388 was nonpreferred compared to E 35–1. Panicle compactness was positively associated with head bug numbers and grain damage. However, genotypes with loose panicles were also susceptible to bugs. Long glumes (>5 mm), days to glume opening (>20 days after anthesis), >50% covering of the grain by the glumes, and grain hardness contribute towards resistance to Eurystylus immaculatus. This information will be useful for developing a programme to breed for resistance to this insect in West Africa.

Dysdercus fasciatus and D. cardinalis were studied in the field to ascertain their occurrence and relative abundance on different host plants at Masongaleni near Kibwezi, Machakos District, Kenya. It was carried out using a complete randomized block with four replicates. It was shown that D. cardinalis occurred more commonly on its wild host plants than D. fasciatus. D. cardinalis was also commonly found feeding on Sterculia spp. on which D. fasciatus was not recorded during these studies. Neither species was recorded from baobab trees.

The diversity and abundance of insect predators of the bean aphid, Aphis fabae Scop. (Homoptera: Aphididae) on common beans, Phaseolus vulgaris L., were evaluated in Central Kenya. Predators included species in the Orders Coleoptera, Diptera, Hemiptera and Neuroptera. Coccinellidae were the most abundant and diverse group and several species, such as Hippodamia variegata Goeze and Platynaspis capicola Crotch, had hitherto not been recorded on common beans in Kenya. Higher numbers of predators developed on beans during the short rains (up to 540/100 m2 plot) as compared to the long rain season (182/plot) of 1985. In both seasons, numbers of coccinellid larvae were high after the fourth week of bean growth. The study provides evidence of an important build-up of insect predators on beans.

Sixty artificially infested grain sorghum genotypes were evaluated for resistance against Busseola fusca. Evaluation of leaf feeding damage indicated levels of resistance ranging from intermediate to susceptible. Genotypes were categorized according to the presence or absence of both antibiotic and tolerant characteristics. Genotypes (17%) exhibited both antibiosis against leaf feeding and tolerance for borer damage. Borer damage resulted in a 4% increase in grain yield of one genotype and a 50% increase in the number of heads of a second genotype. Tolerance and recovery resistance were the most important factors limiting yield loss in grain sorghum genotypes. In this study, the ability of sorghum for tillering (recovery resistance) was separated from the ability to produce heads on infested stems (tolerance). The importance of distinguishing between tolerance and recovery resistance in the evaluation of sorghum germplasm for borer resistance is emphasized.

A total of 2256 germplasm accessions, 3000 advanced generation breeding lines and 150 released varieties of rice were screened under artificial infestation in the greenhouse. Among these, 15 new germplasm accessions, 50 breeding lines derived from 16 crosses and 15 released varieties were resistant. Antibiosis was the predominant resistance mechanism; antixenosis affecting oviposition was noted in 33 resistant varieties. Biochemical composition of a set of resistant varieties along with susceptible checks, revealed that nitrogen content of seven test varieties was significantly higher than that of the susceptible checks, while in other six varieties it was lower than the checks. Similarly, eight of the resistant varieties had considerably higher percentage of polyphenolic compounds in basal stem portion, but seven other cultivars showed significantly lower concentration as compared to susceptible checks. Thus, it was apparent that there was no clear trend among the resistant cultivars as a group in relation to quantitative differences of chemical components analysed.

The diurnal resting sites of Glossina palpalis palpalis were studied from October 1981 to December 1982 in the human trypanosomiasis focus at Bouafle (Ivory Coast). A total of 1382 resting tsetse (970 males and 412 females), were found after 757 hr of search in their natural habitats.

At any season, over 80% of the flies were resting on lianas (Acacia pennata in particular), on coffee trees (Coffea indica) and on Eupatorium odoratum.

Almost all the flies showed a preference for resting on the underside of woody parts of plants selected. The heights of the resting sites ranged from 10 cm to 2.5 m above the ground and their diameters ranged from 0.1 cm to 8 cm. It must be stressed that both in the dry and in the rainy seasons, more than 50% of the flies rested below 50 cm from the ground and over 90% of these favoured stems and branches measuring less than 3 cm in dia.

In the vegetation surrounding villages or along the main access roads and bush pathways, G. p. palpalis were found resting at 1 m to 5 m from the edge of its vegetation habitat.

About 27% of flies were engorged or showed at least red blood meals in their guts. The catching of resting flies therefore, appears to be an excellent way of collecting fresh blood meals for identification of the natural vertebrate hosts of G. p. palpalis in the study area.

The practical interest of the study is discussed and recommendations made for the selective application of residual insecticides in the tsetse habitats to control the vectors of sleeping sickness in the Bouafle focus.

The effects of various levels of cow manure (equivalent to 0–50 kg nitrogen/ha.) or ground limestone (equivalent to 0–5 tons calcium/ha.) on the expression of resistance of cassava, Manihot esculenta Crantz to the cassava mealybug, Phenacoccus manihoti Mat. Ferr., were investigated under semi-controlled conditions in the laboratory. The study was made on two varieties of cassava, Moudouma and MM79, characterized by different levels of resistance in terms of antibiosis and tolerance. The antibiotic component was evaluated by determining the intrinsic capacity for increase rc and tolerance by quantifying morphological and physiological modifications in the growth of plants induced by 2 months infestation by 100 mealybugs.

The antibiotic resistance of the two varieties was reduced by both fertilizers. However, the reduction was only significant at levels of 10 and 20 kg N/ha. and 1 and 1.51 Ca/ha. for Moudouma and MM79 respectively.

In both varieties, tolerance was increased by the addition of nitrogen and not modified by the addition of lime.

The integration of these results into traditional cassava crops systems has also been discussed.

The insecticide diflubenzuron, Dimilin, was applied topically to the eggs of Tabanus triceps and Chrysops dispar. Mean per cent hatchability of these eggs at various concentrations ranging from 1 to 150 ppm were observed. The hatchability depended upon the age of the egg and increased with age. A minimal dose of 10 ppm of diflubenzuron caused 100% mortality (no hatchability) at the age of 48 hr in both species. The per cent hatchability was inversely proportional to the concentration of Dimilin. The larvicidal effect of Dimilin was also noted. Larval mortality (100%) was observed after 60 hr treatment. The larval mortality was directly proportional to the concentration of Dimilin. The results show that Dimilin has potential for controlling Tabanid vectors.

The occurrence and distribution of Cerataphis palmae (Ghesquierei) on Raphia palms in six Southern States of Nigeria, were studied. The percentage infestation of palms in the States were 24.9% (Bendel), 41.23% (Cross River), 37.17% (Imo), 34.73% (Lagos), 11.55% (Oyo) and 28.0% (Rivers). C. palmae is found in places in Southern Nigeria where Raphia palms, particularly R. hookeri Mann & Wendl. and R. vinifera Beauv. occur. There was no significant difference in percentage aphid coverage among the six States (F = 2.013; 0.01 < P > 0.05).

In the forest zone of Côte d'Ivoire, Vavoua's traps and supports treated with pyriproxyfen® (Sumitomo) have been tested against Glossina palpalis palpalis. The supports were impregnated one time only at the dosage of 2 mg/cm2.

This juvenile hormone mimic acting as growth regulator has a good efficacy: apparent density was reduced by 87% after 2 months and was maintained at this level for 150 days; percentage of nulliparous females was equal to 0 between 40th and 120th days.

Pyriproxyfen may be recommended for the control of animal trypanosomiasis vectors—if it costs less than the insecticides; its slow effect on tsetse population does not favour its use for the control of human African trypanosomiasis which needs a drastic and immediate reduction of Glossina densities.
