Two experiments compared yields of spring barley following barley, oats, beans (Vicia faba), red clover (cut) and (one experiment only) oil-seed rape, and tested effects of trefoil (Medicago lupulina) undersown in the preliminary crops of barley and oats. N fertilizer was applied at two rates to preliminary crops, and four rates to the final crop in each experiment. Barley following barley suffered severely from take-all disease (Gaeumannomyces graminis var. tritici); barley after other crops was little affected. Other recognized soil-borne diseases were unimportant. Barley yielded less after barley than after other crops except where excessive N fertilizer caused lodging. Clover and beans left N residues equivalent to about 88 and 44 kg fertilizer N/ha respectively; undersown trefoil left inconsistent N residues. Couchgrass (Agropyron repens) was more prevalent after barley than after other crops.

A dry-block digestion system suitable for the estimation of total protein nitrogen in plant material has been evaluated. The method was found to be as accurate as Kjeldahl flask digestion, required much less fume cupboard space and enabled samples to be dealt with in large batches through weighing, digestion and analysis. The batch size can be designed to be compatible with the autoanalyser capacity. These advantages result in more rapid analysis with less chance of errors and accidents. A 45 min digestion period was found suitable for several crop species of widely different protein content, only field bean seeds required longer digestion time. Using the technique described samples are digested at a relatively low temperature (330 °C) for a short time and digests do not solidify on cooling. The autoanalyser method for determining ammonia concentrations in barley and malt digests (Micheson & Stowell, 1970) has been slightly modified for use with the plant materials studied. The dry-block and autoanalyser system is rapid, precise and compact, requires small amounts of tissue and is suited to the routine analysis of breeding material.

Animal slurry is separated in order to avoid excessive nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium (NPK) fertilization of crops in the field. To enhance fertilizer efficiency further, slurry and its separation products may be acidified, for instance in animal houses. The current study quantified the effects of these treatments, both individually and in combination, on fertilizer efficiency, energy production and heavy metal accumulation as a result of manure management. Acidification increased the availability of N to plants in the manure applied, and provided a better match between plant-available NPK in the manure and separation fraction applied to fields and crop need. Total biogas production was not affected by separation, whereas acidification reduced biogas production because the process was inhibited by a low pH and a high sulphur concentration. The amount of copper applied per hectare in the liquid manure to the wheat field was lower than the amount taken up and more zink and copper was applied in the solid fraction to maize field than taken up. The transportation and field application of solids and liquids did not increase management costs when compared to the transportation of slurry alone, but the investment and running costs of separators and manure acidification increased overall management costs.

Six dryland crops (mungbean, cow pea, soya bean, groundnut, maize and sorghum) and two rice cultivars (C·171·136 and IR 36) were grown under rainfed and irrigated conditions on a dryland site with a clay loam soil at the International Rice Research Institute, Philippines. After the first 30 days of growth there was no effective rain, and the rainfed crops encountered different water deficits. Crop productivity, leaf area, plant water status, root distribution, and soil water use were measured.

Neither rice cultivar yielded seed under rainfed conditions, but all other crops did. With mungbean and cow pea there was little difference between the yields under rainfed and irrigated conditions, but groundnut, soya bean, sorghum and maize gave higher yields under irrigation.

The rainfed crops extracted different amounts of stored soil water, ranging from 100 mm for IR 36 to 250 mm for groundnut. The different amounts were associated with different growth durations, rooting depths and rates of soil water depletion from within the root zone. Biological productivity of the six rainfed crops with the C 3 photosynthetic pathway was linearly related to transpiration, which was estimated from soil water extraction and soil evaporation. Biological productivity per unit of transpiration for the two crops with the C 4 pathway was 2·2 times higher than for those with the C 3 pathway. The different seed yields of the rainfed crops were due to differences in harvest index and the chemical composition of seeds, as well as to biological productivity.

The results are discussed in relation to the potential for growing dryland crops after rice in rice-based cropping systems.

The spring wheat varieties Kolibri, a typical north temperate variety, Pitic 62, a Mexican variety known to respond to vernalization and two selections from the Institute's breeding programme TW 161 and TJB 155 were sown early (2–5 March), during the normal sowing period (27 March) and late (17 April). Primordium initiation was observed until the time of terminal spikelet initiation and the number of leaves and the number of spikelets were analysed in terms of rate and duration of leaf and spikelet primordium initiation. The rate of leaf initiation was affected by time of sowing but not in a systematic way and there were differences between varieties in the way in which the number of leaves changed in response to sowing time. The rate of spikelet initiation increased and the duration decreased with later sowing. There were strong variety × time of sowing interactions. For almost all characters measured, Pitic 62 responded least to time of sowing. Varieties differed in the way in which the number of spikelets per ear responded to time of sowing but in all cases the changes were only small. This waa because the change in the rate of spikelet initiation was almost exactly compensated for by a change in the duration of spikelet initiation. In each variety, the period from terminal spikelet initiation to ear emergence was similar in all sowing treatments and was of similar duration in the main shoot and in the ear-bearing tillers.

The number of leaves per shoot on the tillers was less than the number of leaves on the main shoot and the rate of spikelet primordium initiation of the tillers was faster than in the main shoot. These changes tended to synchronize the time of terminal spikelet initiation. Because of the changes in the number of leaves per shoot and the rate of spikelet initiation the number of spikelets borne on the main shoot and the tillers were similar although the growth period of the tillers was shorter than that of the main shoot.

Wheat, barley and two morphologically contrasting cultivars of peas (leafy and semi-leafless) were grown in pure stands, at standard agricultural densities, and in additive mixtures of cereals with peas. The stands were grown in boxes in the field, and partitions were used to separate the effects of root and shoot interactions. The cereals and peas were either planted at the same time, or one species was planted 10 days before the other. The origin of the N present in each species was determined by applying N fertilizer labelled with 15N.

Both cultivars of peas had greater shoot and root competitive abilities than wheat or barley, probably because of their larger seed size; leafy peas had greater shoot and root competitive abilities than semi-leafless peas. Sowing peas after cereals reduced their competitive ability.

The relative yield total (RYT) of cereal-pea mixtures, based on total biomass, averaged 1·6 when only the root systems interacted, and 1·4 when only the shoot systems interacted, but did not differ significantly from 10 when both root and shoot systems interacted. RYT values were greater when peas were grown with wheat, rather than with barley, and when peas were sown at the same time as the cereals.

Shoot competition from peas increased the N% of cereals, but substantially reduced their total N content, because biomass yield was reduced. Shoot competition from cereals had no effect on the N% of peas, and only slightly reduced their total N content. Shoot competition between cereals and peas had no significant effect upon the proportion of N derived from various sources by either cereals or peas.

Root competition from peas significantly reduced both the N% and total N content of cereals. Root competition from cereals had little effect on the N% of peas, but significantly reduced their total N content and increased the proportion of N derived from rhizobial fixation from 76 to 94%. Since cereals and peas largely used different sources of N, resource complementarity for N was probably an important component of intercropping advantage, when the roots of cereals and peas shared soil resources.

1. A method is described by which it is possible to estimate the numbers of active protozoa in a soil.

2. The total number of protozoa is first found by a dilution method. A fresh portion of the soil is then treated with 2 per cent. HCl (sp. gr. 1·15) overnight. By this means all active forms are killed. A second count by the dilution method gives the number of cystic protozoa in the soil. From these results the number of active forms can be ascertained.

Most crop models make use of a nutrient-balance approach for modelling crop response to soil fertility. To counter the vast input data requirements that are typical of these models, the crop water productivity model AquaCrop adopts a semi-quantitative approach. Instead of providing nutrient levels, users of the model provide the soil fertility level as a model input. This level is expressed in terms of the expected impact on crop biomass production, which can be observed in the field or obtained from statistics of agricultural production. The present study is the first to describe extensively, and to calibrate and evaluate, the semi-quantitative approach of the AquaCrop model, which simulates the effect of soil fertility stress on crop production as a combination of slower canopy expansion, reduced maximum canopy cover, early decline in canopy cover and lower biomass water productivity. AquaCrop's fertility response algorithms are evaluated here against field experiments with tef (Eragrostis tef (Zucc.) Trotter) in Ethiopia, with maize (Zea mays L.) and wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) in Nepal, and with quinoa (Chenopodium quinoa Willd.) in Bolivia. It is demonstrated that AquaCrop is able to simulate the soil water content in the root zone, and the crop's canopy development, dry above-ground biomass development, final biomass and grain yield, under different soil fertility levels, for all four crops. Under combined soil water stress and soil fertility stress, the model predicts final grain yield with a relative root-mean-square error of only 11–13% for maize, wheat and quinoa, and 34% for tef. The present study shows that the semi-quantitative soil fertility approach of the AquaCrop model performs well and that the model can be applied, after case-specific calibration, to the simulation of crop production under different levels of soil fertility stress for various environmental conditions, without requiring detailed field observations on soil nutrient content.

Few reactions are more important to the soil chemist than that involved in the action of dilute acids on the phosphorus compounds of the soil, but, owing to its complex nature, little has been definitely ascertained about it. The importance of the reaction lies in the fact that it affords a distinction between those phosphorus compounds which are fairly easily soluble, and may therefore be expected to enter the plant root without much difficulty, and the less soluble compounds which are of less value in the nutrition of plants.

The effects of the anti-gibberellin triazole metconazole on yield, lodging resistance, seeds/m2 (sink size) and rooting in the presence of negligible amounts of disease were investigated using five multi-site experiments carried out in the UK between 1999 and 2007. The green area index (GAI) of the crop at the time of application had the greatest influence on the yield response across 173 comparisons between metconazole-treated and untreated crops. Crops with a GAI in March (growth stage (GS) 3·3–3·5 ‘green bud’) of 0·8–2·8, which represented moderate to large sized UK commercial crops, had an average response of +0·21 t/ha to metconazole applied at the full recommended rate of 1·2 litres/ha. Crops with a GAI of less than 0·8, which represented small commercial crops, had an average response of −0·14 t/ha. Applications between green bud and early flowering gave the greatest yield increase. Positive yield responses were associated with a reduction in lodging, or more seeds/m2, or a combination of both. The proportional area lodged was reduced by 0·1 for each 50 mm reduction in crop height (R2=0·60; P<0·001). Across six field trials, metconazole applied in spring increased root length density between soil depths of 0·40 and 1·00 m from an average of 0·478 to 0·601 cm/cm3 (P<0·05). It was estimated that this could increase yield by 0·2–0·3 t/ha in a dry season. The results show that the growth regulatory properties of metconazole can be used to improve several key aspects of growth that are believed to restrict current farm yields.

In a series of experiments in which variations in the level of carbohydrates in the plant have been brought about by means of short-term exposures to darkness and raised temperatures, it has been shown that:

1. The yield of leaf material after cutting is affected by pretreatments. This effect seems to be at least partly associated with the level of carbohydrates present in the stubble at the time of cutting.

2. The rate of growth of the plants is independent of the pretreatments imposed once growth is fully established.

The Cornell-Penn-Miner (CPM) Dairy is an applied mathematical nutrition model that computes dairy cattle requirements and the supply of energy and nutrients based on characteristics of the animal, the environment and the physicochemical composition of the feeds under diverse production scenarios. The CPM Dairy was designed as a steady-state model to use rates of degradation of feed carbohydrate and protein and the rate of passage to estimate the extent of ruminal fermentation, microbial growth, and intestinal digestibility of carbohydrate and protein fractions in computing energy and protein post-rumen absorption, and the supply of metabolizable energy and protein to the animal. The CPM Dairy version 3.0 (CPM Dairy 3.0) includes an expanded carbohydrate fractionation scheme to facilitate the characterization of individual feeds and a sub-model to predict ruminal metabolism and intestinal absorption of long chain fatty acids. The CPM Dairy includes a non-linear optimization algorithm that allows for least-cost formulation of diets while meeting animal performance, feed availability and environmental restrictions of modern dairy cattle production. When the CPM Dairy 3.0 was evaluated with data of 228 individual lactating dairy cows containing appropriate information including observed dry matter intake, the linear regression between observed and model-predicted milk production values indicated the model was able to account for 79·8% of the variation. The concordance correlation coefficient (CCC) was high (rc=0·89) without a significant mean bias (0·52 kg/d; P=0·12). The accuracy estimated by the CCC was 0·997. The root of mean square error of prediction (MSEP) was 5·14 kg/d (0·16 of the observed mean) and 87·3% of the MSEP was due to random errors, suggesting little systematic bias in predicting milk production of high-producing dairy cattle. Based upon these evaluations, it was concluded the CPM Dairy 3.0 model adequately predicts milk production at the farm level when appropriate animal characterization, feed composition and feed intake are provided; however, further improvements are needed to account for individual animal variation.

1. Net pasture dry matter production and available pasture dry matter were measured over 3 years in a small-scale replica of the study of the effects of dairy cow grazing management and stocking rate reported by McMeekan & Walshe (1963).

2. The four treatments were

(i) Controlled rotational grazing, light stocking rate (0.95 cows/acre).

(ii) Controlled rotational grazing, heavy stocking rate (1.19 cows/acre).

(iii) Uncontrolled, set stocked grazing, light stocking rate (0.95 cows/acre).

(iv) Uncontrolled, set stocked grazing, heavy stocking rate (1.19 cows/acre).

3. The pasture measurement technique employed measured net pasture production (gains through new growth minus losses from all sources). It is argued that this parameter, rather than absolute pasture production, governs the changes in the dry matter feed supply to the grazing animal.

During the past century wheat breeders have produced a large number of genetically improved wheat lines and varieties. This activity has led to widespread adoption of improved varieties, a steady increase in average wheat yields during the past 4–5 decades and major contributions to food security and poverty reduction. The rate of generation and adoption of improved varieties, and therefore the time lag from varietal release to widespread use, varies across regions. The remarkable success of wheat improvement hinges on the decisions of millions of farmers to adopt, or replace older wheat varieties with superior material. The present paper summarizes studies on the determinants of adoption. Because adoption is a necessary but not sufficient condition for economic impact, the present paper synthesizes key assessments of impact from different farming systems in developing countries.

Selection for high-(H) and low-(L) drought-induced abscisic acid (ABA) accumulation in spring wheat was made from a cross between parents which contrasted in the character. By the F5 generation H and L selections were homozygous for ABA accumulation, which differed between the classes by 80%. The selections were evaluated in field experiments in which the amount of available water was varied.

In one experiment, in which plots were automatically sheltered from rain, H selections outyielded L selections by an average 0·36 t/ha both when fully irrigated and when water was withheld between anthesis and maturity. The extra grain yield of the H selections was not produced at the expense of additional water requirement in either treatment. When water was withheld during the 4 weeks preceding anthesis, the grain yields of H and L selections were similar, but H selections used less water between 1 May and maturity. Averaged over all treatments the ratio of grain yield to water use was greater for H selections than for L selections by 0·12 t/ha/100 mm. Withholding water caused a reduction in water use and a corresponding reduction in biomass production in both sets of selections.

In two trials in which plots were either irrigated weekly or received natural rainfall only, the ratio of grain yield to water use was again greater for H than for L selections, by an average 0·10 t/ha/100 mm.

It is concluded that in spring wheat, selection for high levels of ABA accumulation in response to water stress may provide an opportunity of increasing grain yield and water-use efficiency.

A field experiment to compare the growth, development and yields of four varieties of oilseed rape, Cresus, Guile, Rigo and Nilla, is described and the results discussed. Cressus was the highest-yielding variety largely because it produced more pods and more seeds per pod. The numbers of pods and seeds per pod were positively correlated with the leaf area index at the onset of flowering. This suggests that the rate of supply of carbon assimilates to the inflorescences around the time of anthesis is an important yield-determining character. The mean weight of the individual seeds was greater in Cresus than Guile and this difference, which developed late on in pod growth, also contributed to the higher yields in Cresus.

Three rates of phosphate (0, 25, and 60 kg/ha P2O5) were applied to phosphorus-deficient native grassland at Tel Hadya, in northern Syria, and biomass productivity, botanical composition and number of legume seeds in the soil were monitored for five seasons (1984/85–1988/89). The experiment was grazed at low (0·8 sheep/ha per year) and high (1·7 sheep/ha per year) stocking rates from the second to the fourth seasons of the experiment; in the fifth season, the low and high stocking rates were increased to 1·1 and 2·3 sheep/ha per year, respectively. The experimental site was typical of native grassland within the cereal zone of west Asia, where cropping is not possible because of shallow, stony soils and steep slopes.

The results showed that annual applications of phosphorus, even as low as 25 kg P2O5/ha, alleviated the deficiency in soil P and resulted in improved pasture production, even in dry years. Legume production showed the greatest response to P, increasing by 0·3–3 times the production of the control treatments. By the fifth season, legume seed mass had increased threefold and number of seeds sixfold in the P-treated plots, compared with the first season, while in the control plots there was little change. Rain-use efficiency on the P-treated plots was more than double that of the controls by the fourth and fifth seasons.

Practical application of the results depends on whether (i) legumes are as frequent in native grasslands, as a whole, as they are at Tel Hadya, (ii) the P deficiency observed at Tel Hadya is widespread, and (iii) grazing of communally owned grasslands can be controlled. It is suggested that all three criteria will often be fulfilled and, therefore, that grassland productivity in west Asia could be substantially increased. Furthermore, the results suggest that above-ground cover and soil organic matter will also increase after P application, both of which will help to reduce soil erosion and thereby increase the sustainability of livestock production in west Asia.

A dynamic, mechanistic model of enteric fermentation was used to investigate the effect of type and quality of grass forage, dry matter intake (DMI) and proportion of concentrates in dietary dry matter (DM) on variation in methane (CH4) emission from enteric fermentation in dairy cows. The model represents substrate degradation and microbial fermentation processes in rumen and hindgut and, in particular, the effects of type of substrate fermented and of pH on the production of individual volatile fatty acids and CH4 as end-products of fermentation. Effects of type and quality of fresh and ensiled grass were evaluated by distinguishing two N fertilization rates of grassland and two stages of grass maturity. Simulation results indicated a strong impact of the amount and type of grass consumed on CH4 emission, with a maximum difference (across all forage types and all levels of DMI) of 49 and 77% in g CH4/kg fat and protein corrected milk (FCM) for diets with a proportion of concentrates in dietary DM of 0·1 and 0·4, respectively (values ranging from 10·2 to 19·5 g CH4/kg FCM). The lowest emission was established for early cut, high fertilized grass silage (GS) and high fertilized grass herbage (GH). The highest emission was found for late cut, low-fertilized GS. The N fertilization rate had the largest impact, followed by stage of grass maturity at harvesting and by the distinction between GH and GS. Emission expressed in g CH4/kg FCM declined on average 14% with an increase of DMI from 14 to 18 kg/day for grass forage diets with a proportion of concentrates of 0·1, and on average 29% with an increase of DMI from 14 to 23 kg/day for diets with a proportion of concentrates of 0·4. Simulation results indicated that a high proportion of concentrates in dietary DM may lead to a further reduction of CH4 emission per kg FCM mainly as a result of a higher DMI and milk yield, in comparison to low concentrate diets. Simulation results were evaluated against independent data obtained at three different laboratories in indirect calorimetry trials with cows consuming GH mainly. The model predicted the average of observed values reasonably, but systematic deviations remained between individual laboratories and root mean squared prediction error was a proportion of 0·12 of the observed mean. Both observed and predicted emission expressed in g CH4/kg DM intake decreased upon an increase in dietary N:organic matter (OM) ratio. The model reproduced reasonably well the variation in measured CH4 emission in cattle sheds on Dutch dairy farms and indicated that on average a fraction of 0·28 of the total emissions must have originated from manure under these circumstances.

The effects of straw incorporation (early and late cultivation) and straw burning were contrasted in a split-plot study examining the impact of long-term straw residue management, and six fertilizer nitrogen (N) rates on soil mineral nitrogen, crop fertilizer N requirements and nitrate leaching losses. The experiments ran from 1984 to 1997 on light-textured soils at ADAS Gleadthorpe (Nottinghamshire, UK) and Morley Research Centre (Norfolk, UK).

Soil incorporation of the straw residues returned an estimated 633 kg N/ha at Gleadthorpe and 429 kg N/ha at Morley on the treatment receiving 150 kg/ha per year fertilizer N since 1984. Straw disposal method had no consistent effect on grain and straw yields, crop N uptake, or optimal fertilizer N rates. In every year there was a positive response (P<0·001) to fertilizer N in straw/grain yields, N contents and crop N offtakes at both sites. Nitrate leaching losses were slightly reduced by less than 10 kg N/ha where straw residues had been incorporated, while fertilizer N additions increased nitrate leached at both sites.

At both sites there was a consistent effect (P<0·001) of straw disposal method on autumn soil mineral N, with values following the pattern burn>early incorporate>late plough. The incorporation of straw residues induced temporary N immobilization compared with the treatment where straw was burnt, while the earlier timing of tillage on the incorporate treatment resulted in slightly more mineral N compared with the later ploughed treatment. Fertilizer N rate increased (P<0·001) soil mineral nitrogen at both sites. At Morley, there was more organic carbon in the plough layer where straw had been incorporated (mean 1·09 g/100 g) rather than burnt (mean 0·89 g/100 g), and a strong positive relationship between organic carbon and fertilizer N rate (r2=93·2%, P<0·01). There was a detectable effect of fertilizer N on readily mineralizable N in the plough layer at both Gleadthorpe (P<0·001) and Morley (P<0·05). At Morley, there was a consistent trend (P=0·06) for readily mineralizable N to be higher where straw had been incorporated rather than burnt, indicating that ploughing-in residues may contribute to soil nitrogen supply over the longer term.

CIMMYT (International Maize and Wheat Improvement Centre) and other research groups within the Consultative Group for International Agricultural Research (CGIAR) have made major contributions to agricultural development, e.g. underpinning the ‘green revolution’, but it is unlikely they will continue making such far-reaching contributions without the ability to collect, analyse and assimilate large amounts of spatially orientated agronomic and climatic data. Increasingly, application of modern tools and technologies are crucial elements in order to support and enhance the effectiveness of international agricultural research. Bread and durum wheats (Triticum aestivum and Triticum durum) occupy an estimated 200 million ha globally, are grown from sea level to over 3500 m asl, and from the equator to latitudes above 60 ° N in Canada, Europe, and Asia. For organizations like CIMMYT, which seek to improve wheat production in the developing world, understanding the geographic context of wheat production is crucial for priority setting, promoting collaboration, and targeting germplasm or management practices to specific environments. Increasingly important is forecasting how the environments, and their associated biotic and abiotic stress patterns, shift with changing climate patterns. There is also a growing need to classify production environments by combining biophysical criteria with socio-economic factors. Geospatial technologies, especially geographic information systems (GIS), are playing a role in each of these areas, and spatial analysis provides unique insights. Use of GIS to characterize wheat production environments is described, drawing from examples at CIMMYT. Since the 1980s, the CIMMYT wheat programme has classified production regions into mega-environments (MEs) based on climatic, edaphic, and biotic constraints. Advances in spatially disaggregated datasets and GIS tools allow MEs to be characterized and mapped in a much more quantitative manner. Parallel advances are improving characterizations of the actual (v. potential) distribution of major crops, including wheat. The combination of improved crop distribution data and key biophysical data at high spatial resolutions also permits exploring scenarios for disease epidemics, as illustrated for the stem rust race Ug99. Availability of spatial data describing future climate conditions may provide insights into potential changes in wheat production environments in the coming decades. There is a pressing need to advance beyond static definitions of environments and incorporate temporal aspects to define locations or regions in terms of probability or frequency of occurrence of different environment types. Increased availability of near real-time daily weather data derived from remote sensing should further improve characterization of environments, as well as permit regional-scale modelling of dynamic processes such as disease progression or crop water status.
