Data from several field experiments (eight crops grown under a widely varying nitrogen supply on a loess loam soil) were used for a simulation modelling based analysis of nitrogen availability of cauliflower. The model was built out of components describing root growth, nitrate transport to the roots and the vertical nitrate transport within the soil.

Root observations obtained over 2 years indicated an increased fraction of dry matter allocated to the fine roots under N deficiency. An adopted version of a root growth model for cauliflower described the rooting data with an R2=0·75. Based upon an acceptable description of the soil water budget, vertical nitrate movement during the growth period of cauliflower was accurately described. The magnitude of this movement, however, was limited to soil depths of about 60 cm even after periods of high rainfall, because of a high soil water holding capacity. An analysis of the factors determining nitrate availability indicated that apparent mass flow was only of high importance for conditions of extremely high N supply where high amounts of nitrate nitrogen remain in the soil up to the end of the growing season. Otherwise, the dominating fraction of nitrate has to be transported to the roots by diffusion. Single root model based calculations of maximum nitrate transport to roots overestimated N availability as indicated by estimates of critical soil nitrate N that were too low. The introduction of a restricted uptake activity period of the roots was used to bridge the gap between theoretical calculations and empirical results. Scenario calculations were carried out to obtain functional relationships between N supply and residual soil nitrate levels for different soil conditions and management practices.

The physical parameters of oats of prime importance in determining milling quality are kernel content, the content of free kernels, hullability and screenings. In addition to screenings, hectolitre weight is used in the commercial trading of grain as an indicator of quality due to the absence of suitable methods, for commercial use, for determining the parameters that are closely related to milling quality. The effects of nitrogen (0–200 kg/ha), seed rate (200 and 300 seeds/m2) and plant growth regulator, chlormequat chloride, on grain quality were investigated at two locations, in one spring and three autumn sown experiments, in 1997/98 and 1998/99. Yields increased at higher rates of nitrogen and at the higher seed rate but were not significantly affected by chlormequat chloride. The effects of nitrogen rate and seed rate on kernel content were inconsistent but overall there was a small reduction at the higher nitrogen and higher seed rates and where chlormequat chloride was applied. In general, free kernels were reduced at the higher rates of nitrogen, at the higher seed rate and where chlormequat chloride was applied. Hullability improved at higher rates of nitrogen but was poorer at the higher seed rate and with chlormequat chloride. Screenings increased and hectolitre weight declined at the higher rates of nitrogen, the higher seed rate and with chlormequat chloride. The decline in hectolitre weight due to treatments within each experiment in general was associated with reductions in kernel content, content of free kernels and an increase in screenings. However, variation in hectolitre weight did not reflect variation in kernel content, free kernels and screenings between experiments. Overall, the changes in quality due to nitrogen rate, seed rate and chlormequat chloride were small compared with differences between varieties.

Understanding and predicting small-grain cereal development is becoming increasingly important in enhancing management practices. Recent efforts to improve phenology submodels in crop simulations have focused on incorporating developmental responses to water stress and interpreting and understanding thermal time. The objectives of the present study were to evaluate data from three experiments to (a) determine the qualitative and quantitative response of wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) and barley (Hordeum vulgare L.) to water stress and (b) ascertain where in space to measure temperature, to provide information required to improve phenological submodels. The first experiment tested the phenological responses of 12 winter wheat cultivars to water stress for two seasons at two sites. The second experiment tested the timing of water stress on spring barley phenological responses for 2 years. In a third experiment, soil near the shoot apex of field-grown spring wheat was heated to 3°C above ambient soil temperature for three planting dates in each of 2 years, to test whether it is better to use soil or air temperature in calculating thermal time. The general response of wheat and barley to water stress was to reach growth stages earlier (i.e. to hasten development). The most significant response was for the grain filling period. Water stress had little effect on jointing and flag leaf complete/booting growth stages. Thermal time to jointing was highly variable across locations. However, thermal time to subsequent growth stages was very consistent both within and across locations. The winter wheat cultivars tested followed this general response across site-years, but inconsistencies were found, suggesting a complicated genotype by environment (G×E) interaction that makes improving phenology submodels for all cultivars difficult. The G×E interaction was most prominent for anthesis (A) and maturity (M) growth stages. Results of heating the soil at the shoot apex depth were completely unexpected: heating the soil did not speed spring wheat phenological development. These results, and others cited, suggest caution in allocating effort and resources to measuring or estimating soil temperature rather than relying on readily available air temperature as a means of universally improving phenology submodels. These results help quantify the response of wheat to water stress and thermal time for improving crop simulation models and management.

Differences in development among wheat cultivars are not only restricted to photoperiod and vernalization responses. When both requirements are fully satisfied differences may still arise due to earliness per se. It is not clear at present to what extent this trait is ‘intrinsically’ expressed (a constitutive trait) independently of the environmental conditions so that it might be selected under any thermal condition or if it may be altered to the extent of showing a crossover interaction with temperature in which the ranking of wheat genotypes may be altered. The present study assessed the influence of temperature on the intrinsic earliness for lines of diploid wheat characterized for their differences in a major gene for intrinsic earliness, but also possibly differing in their genetic background for other factors controlling this polygenic trait. To do so the lines were grown individually in two temperature regimes (16 and 23°C) under long days having previously been fully vernalized. Multiple comparisons analyses were carried out among lines of the same allelic group for the Eps-Am1 gene. Results indicated that within each group there were lines that did not differ in their earliness per se, others differed but without exhibiting any line×temperature interaction and finally different types of interaction were shown, including cases where the ranking of lines was altered depending on the growing temperature. It is thus possible that the selection of a genotype based on its earliness per se in an environment might not represent the same performance in another location where temperature varied significantly.

Based on studies concerning dry matter (DM) partitioning, DM production, root growth, nitrogen (N) contents of cauliflower organs and soil nitrate availability (first part of the paper Kage et al. 2003b), an integrated simulation model for the cauliflower/soil system is constructed, parameterized and evaluated.

Dry matter production of cauliflower is described and predicted using a simple light use efficiency (LUE) based approach assuming a linear decrease of light use efficiency with increasing differences between actual, NCAProt, and ‘optimal’, NCAoptProt area based leaf protein concentrations. For 2 experimental years the decline of LUE with decreasing nitrogen concentration was at 0·82 and 0·75 (g DM×m2/(MJ×g N)). Using the parameters obtained from the first experimental year shoot DM production data of cauliflower from five independent experiments with varied N supply containing intermediate harvests could be predicted with a residual mean square error (RMSE) of 72 g/m2 for intermediate harvest DM values ranging from about 50 to 900 g/m2. Nitrogen uptake and partitioning of cauliflower was simulated using functions describing an organ size dependent decline of N content. Leaf nitrate was considered explicitly as a radiation intensity dependent pool, mobilized first under N deficiency. The curd was assumed to have a sink priority for nitrogen. The model predicted shoot N uptake including data of intermediate harvest with a RMSE of 2·4 g/m2 for intermediate harvest N values ranging from about 3 to 30 g/m2. Nitrogen uptake of cauliflower at final harvest was correlated to final leaf number.

A scenario simulation was carried out to quantify seasonal variation in N uptake of cauliflower cultivars under unrestricted N availability. Due to variations in the length of the vernalization phase, simulated shoot N uptake ranged from about 260 kg N/ha for spring planted crops to about 290 kg N/ha for summer planted crops of the cultivar ‘Fremont’. The cultivar ‘Linday’, which shows a more severe delay of vernalization under high temperatures, shows on average a larger shoot N uptake for summer planted crops of about 320 kg N/ha and a much larger variation of shoot N uptake.

The canopy development, radiation absorption and its utilization for biomass production in response to irrigation at different growth stages of three Kabuli chickpea (Cicer arietinum L.) cultivars was studied on a Wakanui silt loam soil in Canterbury, New Zealand (43°38S, 172°30E). The study also aimed at quantifying the yield potential of the crop under varying irrigation regimes and sowing dates. Green area duration (GAD), intercepted radiation (Fi), radiation use efficiency (U) and total intercepted PAR were significantly (P<0·001) increased by irrigation. Total dry matter (TDM) yield was more strongly correlated (R2=0·69–0·83) with GAD than seed yield (R2=0·60–0·69). Accumulation of TDM was highly related to intercepted PAR. Fully irrigated November-sown crops had a final U of 1·46 g DM/MJ PAR. The unirrigated crop had a U of only 0·92 g DM/MJ PAR. The U tended to decrease with delayed sowing.

Averaged over the 2 years, irrigation increased seed yield by 74–124% and trends were similar for TDM yield. Seed yield was doubled in November-sown chickpeas (4·6 t/ha) and cv. Sanford produced 14 and 16% more seed than cvs Dwelley and B-90 respectively. Full irrigation from emergence to physiological maturity always gave the highest seed yield (>4·7 t/ha), and there was no indication of a critical period of sensitivity to water stress. Based on results collected in the first growing season a simple model relating seed yield to radiation interception, U and HI was made. Results from the second growing season were then used as a simple verification to test the accuracy of predictions. The results suggest that these varieties have the potential to yield more than 4·5 t/ha of seed in Canterbury.

The photothermal response of three Kabuli chickpea (Cicer arietinum L.) cultivars, at different growth stages, to eight irrigation treatments in 1998/99 and four irrigation treatments in 1999/2000 was studied on a Wakanui silt loam soil in Canterbury, New Zealand (43°38S, 172°30E). The rate of development from emergence to flowering (e-f) and sowing to harvest maturity were strongly and positively associated (R2=0·87, P<0·001) with mean temperature during those periods. All phenological stages considered (sowing to emergence, e-f, flowering to podding, podding to physiological maturity and physiological maturity to harvest maturity) depended upon accumulated thermal time (Tt) above a base temperature (Tb) of 1 °C.

An accurate prediction of time of flowering was made based on an accumulated mean Tt requirement of 629 °Cdays from e-f (R2=0·91, P<0·001). Fully irrigated crops had higher maximum dry matter accumulation (maxDM; 1093 g/m2), duration of exponential growth (DUR; 99 days), weighted mean absolute growth rate (WMAGR; 12·2 g/m2 per day) and maximum crop growth rate (MGR; 17·1 g/m2 per day). In 1998/99 the positive response of maxDM and MGR depended on a significant (P<0·01) interaction between irrigation and sowing date. The maxDM during the season was highly correlated with DUR and MGR (R2=0·79 and 0·65). It is concluded that to maximize chickpea biological yield in the dry season of the cool-temperate subhumid climate of Canterbury, irrigation should extend across all phenological stages.

Extending the duration of the late reproductive phase in wheat has been proposed as a possible avenue to improve spike fertility. There is a positive correlation between the number of fertile florets and the duration of the stem elongation phase when this phase is varied by extended photoperiod. Photoperiod treatments imposed during the vegetative period also influence the duration of stem elongation. The present study analysed the effect of long photoperiod (19 h) of different duration (10, 12, 14, 18 or 22 d) imposed before the onset of stem elongation on floret fertility in wheat. It was found that the length of the stem elongation phase was modified by earlier ‘historic’ photoperiod treatments imposed during previous phases. However, neither the number of fertile florets per spike nor the spikelet fertility was affected significantly by these historic treatments. The results of the study therefore showed that an increased duration of the late reproductive phase was ineffective in increasing the number of fertile florets, unless the length of that phase was directly altered by current photoperiod.

Durum wheat genotypes with different responses to moisture stress were studied in a glasshouse under moisture stress and non-stress conditions to investigate differences in water use and transpiration efficiency and interrelationships among water use and transpiration efficiency and associated traits. Significantly high genotypic variability in the cumulative amount of water used before (ETba) and after (ETpa) anthesis was observed. Susceptible genotypes used higher amounts of water before anthesis and lower amounts after anthesis. In contrast, tolerant genotypes used a higher proportion of water during the post-anthesis period. Significantly high variability among the genotypes was observed for various measures of water use and transpiration efficiency, total dry matter and harvest index. Ranking of cultivars for water use efficiency based on grain yield (WUEG) and transpiration efficiency based on grain yield was consistent with ranking of cultivars for drought susceptibility indices. Drought susceptibility index was significantly but negatively correlated with harvest index, WUEG and grain yield. However, it was positively and significantly correlated with the ETba[ratio ]ETpa ratio. A high positive correlation of WUEG with harvest index and grain yield with harvest index was found. It was concluded that selection for lower ETba[ratio ]ETpa ratios up to about 0·8 could indirectly lead to improved WUEG and HI, hence improved grain yield. Selection for increased WUEG and/or grain yield would increase yield in water-limited environments.

The present study was designed to analyse the effect of the length of exposure to a long photoperiod imposed c. 3 weeks after sowing in spring wheat (cv. UQ189) and barley (cv. Arapiles) to (i) establish whether the response to the number of cycles of exposure is quantitative or qualitative, (ii) determine the existence of a commitment to particular stages well before the stage has been observable, and (iii) study the interrelationships between the effects on final leaf number and phyllochron when the stimulus is provided several days after seedling emergence. Both wheat and barley seemed to respond quantitatively to the number of long-day cycles they were exposed to. However, wheat showed a requirement of approximately 4 long-day cycles to be able to produce a significant response in time to heading. The barley cultivar used in the study was responsive to the minimum length of exposure. The response to extended photoperiod cycles during the stem elongation phase was due to the ‘memory’ photoperiod effects being related, in the case of wheat, to the fact that the pre-terminal spikelet appearance phase saturated its photoperiod response well before that stage was reached. Therefore, the commitment to the terminal spikelet appearance in wheat may be reached well before this stage could be recognized.

As the response in duration to heading exceeded that of the final leaf number, and the stem elongation phase responded to memory effects of photoperiod, the phyllochron of both cereals was responsive to the treatments accelerating the average phyllochron when exposed to longer periods of long days. The response in average phyllochron was due to a switch from bi-linear to linear models of leaf number v. time when the conditions were increasingly inductive, with the phyllochron of the initial (6–8) leaves being similar for all treatments (within each species), and from then on increased.

The risk of drought is high in the Sudan savannah zone of West and Central Africa because rainfall in this area is unpredictable in quantity and distribution. Thus, improved maize genotypes tolerant to drought could stabilize maize grain yield in this zone, where recurrent drought threatens grain production. Six maize genotypes, two each of hybrids, open-pollinated varieties (OPVs) and landraces, were evaluated for tolerance to terminal water deficit before flowering. Water deficit significantly reduced growth, grain yield and yield components of the maize genotypes. Significant differences were observed among genotypes for all the traits measured. One hybrid, 9011-30, and two improved OPVs, STR-EV-IWD and IYFD-C0, that showed tolerance to water stress recorded higher grain yield, and accumulated and partitioned more assimilates to the grain than the drought-susceptible genotypes. Also the drought-tolerant genotypes, 9011-30, STR-EV-IWD and IYFD-C0 had more ears/plant and greater numbers of kernels/ear. These genotypes could serve as sources of drought tolerance for the development and improvement of new drought-tolerant maize genotypes.

The present study was conducted from 1998 to 2000, to evaluate seasonal water use and soil-water extraction by Kabuli chickpea (Cicer arietinum L.). The response of three cultivars to eight irrigation treatments in 1998/99 and four irrigation treatments in 1999/2000 at different growth stages was studied on a Wakanui silt loam soil in Canterbury, New Zealand. Evapotranspiration was measured with a neutron moisture meter and water use efficiency (WUE) was examined at crop maturity. Water use was about 426 mm for the fully irrigated treatment and at least 175 mm for the non-irrigated plants. There was a significant correlation (P<0·001) between water use and biomass yield (R2=0·80) and water use and seed yield (R2=0·75). There were also highly significant (P<0·001) interacting effects of irrigation, sowing date and cultivar on WUE and the trend was similar to that for seed yield. The estimated WUE ranged from 22–29 kg DM/ha per mm and 10–13 kg seed yield/ha per mm water use.

The three chickpea cultivars were capable of drawing water from depths greater than 60 cm. However, most of the water use (0·49–0·93 mm/10 cm soil layer per day) came from the top 0–30 cm, where most of the active roots were concentrated. The study has shown that using actual evapotranspiration and water-use efficiency, the biomass yield and seed yield of Kabuli chickpeas can be accurately predicted in Canterbury. Soil water shortage has been identified as a major constraint to increasing chickpea production. Drought was quantified using the concept of maximum potential soil moisture deficit (Dpmax) calculated from climate data. Drought responses of yield, phenology, radiation use efficiency and yield components were determined, and were highly correlated with Dpmax. The maximum potential soil moisture deficit increased from about 62 mm (irrigated throughout) to about 358 mm (dryland plots). Chickpea yield, intercepted radiation and the number of pods per plant decreased linearly as the Dpmax increased. Penman's irrigation model accurately described the response of yield to drought. The limiting deficit for this type of soil was c. 165 and 84 mm for the November and December sowings in 1998/99 and 170 mm in 1999/2000. Beyond these limiting deficits, yield declined linearly with maximum potential soil moisture deficits of up to 358 mm. There was little evidence to support the idea of a moisture sensitive period in these Kabuli chickpea cultivars. Yield was increased by irrigating at any stage of crop development, provided that the water was needed as determined by the potential soil moisture deficit and sowing early in the season.

Physiological traits responsible for differences in yield performance among pre-released genotypes are normally not known. The objective of the present study was to evaluate seasonal variations in dynamic growth and development traits between 12 large-seeded Virginia-type and 14 small-seeded Spanish-type advanced breeding lines of peanut (Arachis hypogaea L.). The experiment was conducted in 1999 and 2000 at Khon Kaen University in Northeast Thailand for three planting dates, representing the early-rainy season, mid-rainy season and dry season. Very similar phenological development was observed for all lines within each group and between the early and the mid-rainy seasons. However, a lower temperature during the early growth stage in the dry season delayed flower initiation and extended maturity. During this period, crop growth rates as well as the development rate for leaf area index and specific leaf area were also lower compared with the rainy seasons. On average, both pod yield and total biomass for the rainy season and the dry season were about the same. Variations among lines within each group were also small. For these advanced breeding lines, the pod growth rate was the most important yield determinant while the crop growth rate had lesser effect and the partitioning coefficient and pod-filling duration had no significant effect. However, the crop growth rate, pod growth rate and partitioning coefficient were important traits for a line to be the top yielder. Pod-filling duration was also important when the lines involved were considerably diverse in maturity and seed size. Information on these traits, if used together with final pod yield, will make varietal selection more efficient.

Finnish rye (Secale cereale L.) cultivars are extremely tolerant of freezing and are fairly resistant to low-temperature fungal infection. Finnish cultivars usually have long straw, are lodging-sensitive, low yielding and have low Hagberg falling number. Many central European rye cultivars have been bred to overcome these problems, but are less winter hardy and have lower yield stability under northern conditions. In the present study, the development and growth of Finnish and foreign rye cultivars were compared in the field and also under simulated average autumn hardening conditions in a growth chamber. Leaf elongation, but not tillering, of both Finnish and foreign rye cultivars ceased during the simulated hardening period in the growth chamber. At the end of the hardening period, both Finnish and foreign cultivars had reached equal dry weights and soluble sugar contents of crowns and leaves. It was concluded that in a typical Finnish autumn, the foreign and domestic cultivars responded similarly when development and hardening were monitored. Thus, the risks related to overwintering are likely to be emphasized under adverse conditions either in the autumn or in the spring. In the field, a German hybrid cultivar performed better than a Finnish population cultivar under favourable growing conditions, but when stresses such as drought occurred, it lost its superiority. When low seeding rates were used, the Finnish cultivar compensated through tillering more efficiently than the German one for the reduced number of main shoots. However, the yield potential of the German cultivar was, in general, higher irrespective of seeding rate. This was due to a higher photosynthesis rate, larger harvest index and grain size.

The content of starch and the activities of enzymes involved in starch biosynthesis were examined in developing grains of field grown rice (Oryza sativa L.) plants. Enzyme activities were monitored throughout the grain filling period of cultivar Tainung 67 and its NaN3-induced mutant SA419. The activities of most of the grain enzymes involved in starch biosynthesis increased and reached their maxima during the initial period of grain development, then gradually declined towards the later stages of grain filling. Both Tainung 67 and SA419 showed different starch and amylose accumulation patterns in different grain positions. In cultivar Tainung 67, reduced activities of grain enzymes involved in starch biosynthesis, particularly during the early phase of grain filling, were related to the decreased starch accumulation for the grains located on proximal secondary branches as compared with the grains located on distal primary branches. The decreased amylose contents in the grains of Tainung 67 located on proximal secondary branches were attributable to their lower granule bound starch synthase and starch debranching enzyme activities at early and mid phases of grain filling. In mutant SA419, no significant changes were observed in the activities of grain enzymes involved in sucrose to starch conversion between the grains located on distal primary and proximal secondary branches of the panicle. As a result, grain setting position was found to have little effect on the contents of starch and amylose for these developing grains located on different branches. Thus, the mutant SA419 did have some agronomic and physiological traits that were superior to its wild type cultivar Tainung 67.

Changes in the wheat phosphatases (phytase-Phy and acid phosphatase-AcPh) and the degradation of their substrates (inositol phosphates esters) during seed germination have been examined in two studies. Germinated grains with high phytate degrading enzymes are of potential interest in the improvement of phosphorus availability in monogastric animals. In the first study, the seeds were soaked for 1 and 14 h and germinated for 3 and 5 days with and without the addition of gibberellic acid (GA3). In the second study, the seeds were soaked for 1 h and germinated for 1, 3 and 5 days with GA3. Phytase (up to 1800 and 1573 U/kg) and acid phosphatase (up to 13 115 and 10 154 U/g) activities and IP6 (6·96 and 7·67 mg/g), IP5 (0·40 and 0·60 mg/g) and IP4 (0·04 and 0·04 mg/g) were detected in ungerminated spring and winter wheat, respectively. The germination process caused a significant increase of Phy and AcPh activities in spring (up to 275 and 235%) and winter wheat (up to 250 and 329%) and a reduction in the phytate phosphorus content (up to 35 and 64%, respectively). Phytate phosphorus content was affected in both spring and winter wheat by the soaking time. Finally, during the course of germination, IP6 and IP5 were more rapidly degraded in winter wheat (62 and 62%) than in spring wheat (32 and 29%), and IP4 was only a short-living intermediate, which was increased during hydrolysis and degraded to IP3. In conclusion, the germination process caused a significant increase of Phy and AcPh in spring and winter wheat, which was accompanied with a significant reduction of phytate phosphorus content and an increase in the content of lower inositol phosphates.

Morphological description based on features of the olive stone, such as its surface and shape, can help to determine an olive cultivar's identity. The description, however, is based on visual examination and is thus affected by the examiner's expertise. Although the eye has the capacity to discern texture and shape, the values that are assigned to score different levels or descriptor states, such as a highly scabrous to smooth surface or a circular to elliptic shape, are categorical values. Studies on scoring methodology have shown that the assignment to categories or classes is problematic. The purpose of the present work was to classify olive cultivars by computer-image analysis of olive stone characteristics using mathematical tools, such as fractal geometry and moments. Fractals were used to extract texture information, and moments were used to extract shape information. The results revealed an overall classification accuracy of more than 90% using a Mahalanobis distance. The fractals and moments calculated for stones from genetically identical trees of the same cultivar did not show any statistically significant differences. As environmentally independent and robust morphological descriptors, both fractals and moments showed potential for accurate and efficient classification of olive cultivars and eventual description of olive diversity.

The origin and significance of an indent on laminae of wheat is unknown. The constancy, position and emergence of a leaf indent was recorded on a range of winter wheat cultivars sown on two dates in 1998/99 and three dates in 1999/2000. The time when the indent developed was also examined in 1999/2000.

The indent appeared to be caused by tissue in the region of the ligule on the previous leaf swelling as the ligule formed. The synchrony between a ligule on one leaf and an indent on the next generally lasted until the ligule appeared from within the previous leaf sheath. The date of plant emergence influenced the pattern of tip to indent length throughout the life of the plant and different varieties also showed different patterns. There was strong correlation between the length of a leaf sheath and the length of the next (younger) lamina from the ligule to the indent.

Parental, F1, F2, BC1, BC2, BC11, BC12, BC21, BC22, BC1 self-pollinated and BC2 self-pollinated generations of three crosses involving six cultivars of durum wheat (Triticum turgidum var. durum) were studied for flag leaf length under normal and late sown environments to analyse the nature of gene effects. For most crosses the 10-parameter model was the best descriptor of the data to account for the variability in generation means of this trait but in cross HI 8062×JNK-4W-128 the 6-parameter model was the best (normal sown) while in cross Raj 911×DWL 5002 the 3-parameter model was the best (late sown). Of the epistatic interactions, dominance×dominance (l) and dominance×dominance×dominance (z) played significantly greater roles in controlling the inheritance of this trait. Absolute totals of non-fixable gene effects were much higher than the fixable gene effects in all the crosses in both the environments, indicating the greater roles of non-additive effects in controlling the inheritance of flag leaf length in durum wheat cultivars. Significant partial dominance was observed frequently in most of the crosses. Significant heterosis was attributed to combined effects of dominance×dominance (l), additive×additive×dominance (x) and dominance×dominance×dominance (z) epistatic interactions in the cross Cocorit 71×A-9-30-1 under late sown environment. Biparental mating and/or diallel selective mating, which exploit both fixable and non-fixable components, have been suggested for the improvement of this trait in durum wheat cultivars.

A stringent RAPD-PCR protocol was developed for reliable distinction at an early stage between somatic and doubled-haploid androgenic regenerates emerging from asparagus anther culture by using decamer primers with a high G/C content and/or primers with a dinucleotide sequence. RAPD-PCR was used to test 87 putative doubled-haploids from seven donor plants of different varieties and breeding lines, with differing genetic backgrounds. All of them differed from the anther donor, which suggests they had the desired doubled-haploid constitution, and demonstrates the effectiveness of the in vitro protocol used. This simple, reliable, fast, and comparatively cheap method eliminates the need for discriminating testcrosses and, thus, can significantly accelerate asparagus breeding programmes.
