Sharp upper and lower bounds for the variance of a non-negative function of a non-negative random variable are obtained under rather weak hypotheses regarding the function. Comparisons between bounds are made and some specific examples are considered.

When {Xn} is an irreducible, stationary, aperiodic Markov chain on the countable state space X = {i, j,…}, the study of long-range dependence of any square integrable functional {Yn} := {yXn} of the chain, for any real-valued function {yi: i ∈ X}, involves in an essential manner the functions Qijn = ∑r=1n(pijr − πj), where pijr = P{Xr = j | X0 = i} is the r-step transition probability for the chain and {πi: i ∈ X} = P{Xn = i} is the stationary distribution for {Xn}. The simplest functional arises when Yn is the indicator sequence for visits to some particular state i, Ini = I{Xn=i} say, in which case limsupn→∞n−1var(Y1 + ∙ ∙ ∙ + Yn) = limsupn→∞n−1 var(Ni(0, n]) = ∞ if and only if the generic return time random variable Tii for the chain to return to state i starting from i has infinite second moment (here, Ni(0, n] denotes the number of visits of Xr to state i in the time epochs {1,…,n}). This condition is equivalent to Qjin → ∞ for one (and then every) state j, or to E(Tjj2) = ∞ for one (and then every) state j, and when it holds, (Qijn / πj) / (Qkkn / πk) → 1 for n → ∞ for any triplet of states i, jk.

Consider a stable GI/G/1 queue with non-lattice interarrival time distribution. Let G and H be the limiting actual and virtual waiting time distributions respectively. Two separate statements of the relationship between G and H are found in a classical theorem of Takàcs and a more recent (and previously unpublished) theorem of Hooke. A simplified proof of Takàcs's theorem, based on a sample path relationship between the virtual and actual waiting time processes, has recently been advanced. This paper gives a similar proof of Hooke's theorem, based on the same sample path relationship, and demonstrates the utility of the result in analyzing the special case of Poisson input. In particular, by combining the Takàcs and Hooke results one can obtain the Pollaczek–Khintchine formula without any reference to the imbedded Markov chain.

In this paper, a single channel FIFO fluid queue with an infinite buffer space and a long-range dependent input is studied. The input traffic is modeled by an average input rate plus a standard fractional Brownian motion as the fluctuation. Lower and upper bounds are derived for the tail distribution of the transient queue length at time T, which result in a logarithmic characterization of the asymptotic behavior of the tail distribution. Furthermore, the exact asymptotic is also obtained. It is observed that the transient queue length under fractional Brownian input does not suffer from the heavy-tail property as does the steady-state queue length. The results are used to compute the equivalent bandwidth requirement for ATM broadband connections with fractional Brownian traffic feed and finite connection holding time.

We consider a single-server queue with Poisson input operating under first-come–first-served (FCFS) or last-come–first-served (LCFS) disciplines. The service times of the customers are independent and obey a general distribution. The system is subject to costs for holding a customer per unit of time, which can be customer specific or customer class specific. We give general expressions for the corresponding value functions, which have elementary compact forms, similar to the Pollaczek–Khinchine mean value formulae. The results generalize earlier work where similar expressions have been obtained for specific service time distributions. The obtained value functions can be readily applied to develop nearly optimal dispatching policies for a broad range of systems with parallel queues, including multiclass scenarios and the cases where service time estimates are available.

Assume that we want to estimate – σ, the abscissa of convergence of the Laplace transform. We show that no non-parametric estimator of σ can converge at a faster rate than (log n)–1, where n is the sample size. An optimal convergence rate is achieved by an estimator of the form where xn = O(log n) and is the mean of the sample values overshooting xn. Under further parametric restrictions this (log n)–1 phenomenon is also illustrated by a weak convergence result.

In completely or partially oriented percolation models, a conceptually simple method, using barriers to enclose all open paths from the origin, improves the best previous lower bounds for the critical percolation probabilities.

The cars are considered as points on an infinite road with no intersections. They can overtake each other without any delay and they travel at constant speeds. These are independent identically distributed random variables also independent of the initial positions of the cars. The main purpose of the paper is the study of the asymptotic distribution for the number of overtakings (and/or meetings) in increasing rectangles in the time-road plane. Under the assumption of (weighted) Poisson distributed cars along the time-axis we deduce the asymptotic distribution of the standardized number of overtakings (and/or meetings) for large rectangles in the time-road plane. Lastly we shall indicate an application of the results.

This article deals with the generalized Smoluchowski process, {n(t), t ≧ 0}, defined by the temporal fluctuating of the numbers of randomly moving particles contained in m < ∞ disjoint regions of space. The relationship of the Smoluchowski process {n(t), t ≧ 0} to the emigration–immigration process is discussed and conditions for their equivalence are presented.

The yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae has emerged as an ideal model system to study the dynamics of prion proteins which are responsible for a number of fatal neurodegenerative diseases in humans. Within an infected cell, prion proteins aggregate in complexes which may increase in size or be fragmented and are transmitted upon cell division. Recent work in yeast suggests that only aggregates below a critical size are transmitted efficiently. We formulate a continuous-time branching process model of a yeast colony under conditions of prion curing. We generalize previous approaches by providing an explicit formula approximating prion loss as influenced by both aggregate growth and size-dependent transmission.

The theory of majorization is applied to investigate the effects of heterogeneity in a class of epidemics. In particular, the heterogeneity of the components of the contact vector of a given susceptible is studied. It is shown that if the heterogeneity can be partially ordered through majorization, then the probability functions of escaping infection can be similarly ordered. The results can be applied to AIDS research on the spread of the HIV virus.

Let P(c) = P(X1 ≦ c1, · ··, Xp ≦ cp) for a random vector (X1, · ··, Xp). Bounds are considered of the form where T is a spanning tree corresponding to the bivariate probability structure and di is the degree of the vertex i in T. An optimized version of this inequality is obtained. The main result is that alwayṡ dominates certain second-order Bonferroni bounds. Conditions on the covariance matrix of a N(0,Σ) distribution are given so that this bound applies, and various applications are given.

We compare dependence in stochastically monotone Markov processes with partially ordered Polish state spaces using the concordance and supermodular orders. We show necessary and sufficient conditions for the concordance order to hold both in terms of the one-step transition probabilities for discrete-time processes and in terms of the corresponding infinitesimal generators for continuous-time processes. We give examples showing that a stochastic monotonicity assumption is not necessary for such orderings. We indicate relations between dependence orderings and, variously, the asymptotic variance-reduction effect in Monte Carlo Markov chains, Cheeger constants, and positive dependence for Markov processes.

A semi-Markov decision process, with a denumerable multidimensional state space, is considered. At any given state only a finite number of actions can be taken to control the process. The immediate reward earned in one transition period is merely assumed to be bounded by a polynomial and a bound is imposed on a weighted moment of the next state reached in one transition. It is shown that under an ergodicity assumption there is a stationary optimal policy for the long-run average reward criterion. A queueing network scheduling problem, for which previous criteria are inapplicable, is given as an application.

This paper is a study of the error in approximating the global maximum of a Brownian motion on the unit interval by observing the value at randomly chosen points. One point of view is to look at the error from random sampling for a given fixed Brownian sample path; another is to look at the error with both the path and observations random. In the first case we show that for almost all Brownian paths the error, normalized by multiplying by the square root of the number of observations, does not converge in distribution, while in the second case the normalized error does converge in distribution. We derive the limiting distribution of the normalized error averaged over all paths.

We analyze the unit-demand Euclidean vehicle routeing problem, where n customers are modeled as independent, identically distributed uniform points and have unit demand. We show new lower bounds on the optimal cost for the metric vehicle routeing problem and analyze them in this setting. We prove that there exists a constant ĉ > 0 such that the iterated tour partitioning heuristic given by Haimovich and Rinnooy Kan (1985) is a (2 - ĉ)-approximation algorithm with probability arbitrarily close to 1 as the number of customers goes to ∞. It has been a longstanding open problem as to whether one can improve upon the factor of 2 given by Haimovich and Rinnooy Kan. We also generalize this, and previous results, to the multidepot case.

In a recent paper [7] the authors studied the optimal control policy of the following queueing system. Customers arrive at a service station according to a time homogeneous Poisson process with a known arrival intensity, λ. The service time at the station is a random variable having a negative exponential distribution with intensity μ, which is under control and can be varied over a certain range, according to the management policy.

We compare two versions of a symmetric two-queue polling model with switchover times and setup times. The SI version has State-Independent setups, according to which the server sets up at the polled queue whether or not work is waiting there; and the SD version has State-Dependent setups, according to which the server sets up only when work is waiting at the polled queue. Naive intuition would lead one to believe that the SD version should perform better than the SI version. We characterize the difference in the expected waiting times of these two versions, and we uncover some surprising facts. In particular, we show that, regardless of the server utilization or the service-time distribution, the SD version performs (i) the same as, (ii) worse than, or (iii) better than its SI counterpart if the switchover and setup times are, respectively, (i) both constants, (ii) variable (i.e. non-deterministic) and constant, or (iii) constant and variable. Only (iii) is consistent with naive intuition.

We consider a variant of the house-selling problem in which the seller has n objects for sale and the buyers come sequentially one by one. The objective of this paper is to find the seller's optimal strategy for choosing his selling price so as to maximize the average reward per selling attempt until the nth house is sold.

Points randomly placed in Rn are independently assigned a speed and direction of motion. The time between collisions with a central n-sphere is obtained. If instead of straight-line motion the points perform Brownian motion, the analogous inter-collision-time distribution is obtained.
