In this article we give some characterizations of Poisson processes, the model which we consider is inspired by Kimeldorf and Thall (1983) and we generalize the results of Chandramohan and Liang (1985). More precisely, we consider an arbitrarily delayed renewal process, at each arrival time we allow the number of arrivals to be i.i.d. random variables, also the mass of each unit atom can be split into k new atoms with the ith new atom assigned to the process Di, i = 1, ···, k. We shall show that the existence of a pair of uncorrelated processes Di, Dj, i ≠ j, implies the renewal process is Poisson. Some other related characterization results are also obtained.

This paper studies the asymptotic properties of moment estimators for the general shifting level process (SLP). A law of large numbers and a weak convergence theorem are obtained under conditions involving the unobservable processes which make up SLP. Specific conditions about those underlying processes are added to give explicit results, applicable to a large class of moment estimators. Actual formulae for asymptotic variances, etc. are obtained for a simple example, the GNN model.

It has been recently proved that if N, X1, X2, … are non-constant mutually independent random variables with X1,X2, … identically distributed and N non-negative and integer-valued, then the independence of and implies that X1 is Bernoulli and N is Poisson. A well-known theorem in point process theory due to Fichtner characterizes a Poisson process in terms of a sum of independent thinnings. In the present article, simultaneous generalizations of both of these results are provided, including a joint characterization of the multinomial distribution and the Poisson process.

A bivariate point process consisting of an original stationary point process and its random translation is considered. Westcott's method is applied to show that if the original point process is ergodic then the bivariate point process is also ergodic. This result is applied to an identification problem of the displacement distribution. It is shown that if the spectrum of the original process is the real line then the displacement distribution is identifiable from almost every sample realisation of the bivariate process.

Given a branching random walk $(Z_n)_{n\geq0}$ on $\mathbb{R}$ , let $Z_n(A)$ be the number of particles located in interval A at generation n. It is well known that under some mild conditions, $Z_n(\sqrt nA)/Z_n(\mathbb{R})$ converges almost surely to $\nu(A)$ as $n\rightarrow\infty$ , where $\nu$ is the standard Gaussian measure. We investigate its large-deviation probabilities under the condition that the step size or offspring law has a heavy tail, i.e. a decay rate of $\mathbb{P}(Z_n(\sqrt nA)/Z_n(\mathbb{R})>p)$ as $n\rightarrow\infty$ , where $p\in(\nu(A),1)$ . Our results complete those in Chen and He (2019) and Louidor and Perkins (2015).

Consider the following iterated process on a hypergraph H. Each vertex v starts with some initial weight $x_v$ . At each step, uniformly at random select an edge e in H, and for each vertex v in e replace the weight of v by the average value of the vertex weights over all vertices in e. This is a generalization of an interactive process on graphs which was first introduced by Aldous and Lanoue. In this paper we use the eigenvalues of a Laplacian for hypergraphs to bound the rate of convergence for this iterated averaging process.

There are some generalised semi-Markov processes (GSMP) which are insensitive, that is the value of some performance measures for the system depend only on the mean value of lifetimes and not on their actual distribution. In most cases this is not true and a performance measure can take on a number of values depending on the lifetime distributions. In this paper we present a method for finding tight bounds on the sensitivity of performance measures for the class of GSMPs with a single generally distributed lifetime. Using this method we can find upper and lower bounds for the value of a function of the stationary distribution as the distribution of the general lifetime ranges over a set of distributions with fixed mean. The method is applied to find bounds on the average queue length of the Engset queue and the time congestion in the GI/M/n/n queueing system.

In this paper various statistics for randomized random walks and their distributions are presented. The distributional results are derived by means of a limiting procedure applied to the pertaining discrete time process, which has been considered in part I of this work (Katzenbeisser and Panny 1996). This basic approach, originally due to Meisling (1958), seems to offer certain technical advantages, since it avoids the use of Laplace transforms and is even simpler than Feller's randomization technique.

In this paper we extend the class of zero-order threshold autoregressive models to a much richer class of mixture models. The new class has the important property of duality which, as we show, corresponds to time reversal. We are then able to obtain the time reversals of the zero-order threshold models and to characterise the time-reversible members of this subclass. These turn out to be quite trivial. The time-reversible models of the more general class do not suffer in this way. The complete stationary distributional structure is given, as are various moments, in particular the autocovariance function. This is shown to be of ARMA type. Finally we give two examples, the second of which extends from the finite to the countable mixture case. The general theory for this extension will be given elsewhere.

We consider a class of multifractional processes related to Hermite polynomials. We show that these processes satisfy an invariance principle. To prove the main result of this paper, we use properties of the Hermite polynomials and the multiple Wiener integrals. Because of the multifractionality, we also need to deal with variations of the Hurst index by means of some uniform estimates.

Paz (1963), (1971) has shown that for an n × n stochastic matrix P the property that some power of P has a positive ergodic coefficient is decidable. In particular he shows that α (Pk) > 0 for some k, only if it is positive for k = ½n(n – 1). However he states that it is not known whether this bound is sharp. In this paper a sharp bound is given, namely k =½(n – 1)2 + ½ or ½(n − 1)2 + 1 depending on whether n is even or odd. The proof of this is based on some results from number theory.

From normal limiting distributions of suitably normed sequences of Galton–Watson processes or Galton-Watson processes with immigration, with initial states tending to ∞, we can derive local limit theorems for the transition probabilities Qn (i, j) and Pn (i, j) in the non-critical case, when initial state i and final state j tend to ∞ with n.

Formulae for ζ(2n) and Lχ4(2n + 1) involving Euler and tangent numbers are derived using the hyperbolic secant probability distribution and its moment generating function. In particular, the Basel problem, where ζ(2) = π2 / 6, is considered. Euler's infinite product for the sine is also proved using the distribution of sums of independent hyperbolic secant random variables and a local limit theorem.

A multitype urn scheme with random replacements is considered. Each time a ball is picked, another ball is added, and its type is chosen according to the transition probabilities of a reducible Markov chain. The vector of frequencies is shown to converge almost surely to a random element of the set of stationary measures of the Markov chain. Its probability distribution is characterized as the solution to a fixed point problem. It is proved to be Dirichlet in the particular case of a single transient state to which no return is possible. This is no longer the case, however, as soon as returns to transient states are allowed.

In this paper we characterise the distributions of the number of predecessors and of the number of successors of a given set of vertices, A, in the random mapping model, TnD̂ (see Hansen and Jaworski (2008)), with exchangeable in-degree sequence (D̂1,D̂2,…,D̂n). We show that the exact formulae for these distributions and their expected values can be given in terms of the distributions of simple functions of the in-degree variables D̂1,D̂2,…,D̂n. As an application of these results, we consider two special examples of TnD̂ which correspond to random mappings with preferential and anti-preferential attachment, and determine the exact distributions for the number of predecessors and the number of successors in these cases. We also characterise, for these two special examples, the asymptotic behaviour of the expected numbers of predecessors and successors and interpret these results in terms of the threshold behaviour of epidemic processes on random mapping graphs. The families of discrete distributions obtained in this paper are also of independent interest.

In this paper we present a method for obtaining explicit results for some two-sided boundary problems involving sums of independent random variables with alternating distributions. We apply the method to finding the first passage time to either one of two finite barriers, and to some situations arising in queueing and dam theory. The results can be expressed in terms of a finite sum of simple repeated integrals (or sums) of known functions (cf. formulae (3.6)– (3.11)).

Present developments in computer performance evaluation require detailed analysis of N-dimensional random walks on the set of lattice points in the first 2N-ant of Recent research has shown that for the two-dimensional case the inherent mathematical problem can often be formulated as a boundary value problem of the Riemann–Hilbert type. The paper is concerned with a derivation and analysis of an identity for the first entrance times distributions into the boundary of such random walks. The identity formulates a relation between these distributions and the zero-tuples of the kernel of the random walk; the kernel contains all the information concerning the structure of the random walk in the interior of its stage space. For the two-dimensional case the identity is resolved and explicit expressions for the entrance times distributions are obtained.

A summation formula is given for computing the spectrum of intervals of a geometric branching Poisson process from the cumulant generating function of the associated counting process.

How should a team allocate its players to achieve the optimal balance between offence and defence? By posing a simple territorial game between two teams, insight into this question is gained. The saddlepoint solution to the game is derived.
