A Quillen model structure on the category Gray-Cat of Gray-categories is described, for which the weak equivalences are the triequivalences. It is shown to restrict to the full subcategory Gray-Gpd of Gray-groupoids. This is used to provide a functorial and model-theoretic proof of the unpublished theorem of Joyal and Tierney that Gray-groupoids model homotopy 3-types. The model structure on Gray-Cat is conjectured to be Quillen equivalent to a model structure on the category Tricat of tricategories and strict homomorphisms of tricategories.

In previous papers ([1, 2]) we defined the C*-algebra and the longitudinal pseudodifferential calculus of any singular foliation (M,). In the current paper we construct the analytic index of an elliptic operator as a KK-theory element, and prove that this element can be obtained from an “adiabatic foliation” on M×ℝ, which we introduce here.

We define and compare two bivariant generalizations of the topological K - group Ktop(G). We consider the Baum-Connes conjecture in this context and study its relation to the usual Baum-Connes conjecture.

We give a classification (up to smooth homotopy) of finitely summable Fredholm representations (Fredholm modules) over higher rank groups and lattices. Our results are a direct consequence of work of Bader, Furman, Gelander and Monod on generalizations of Kazhdan's property T for locally compact groups.

We prove an index theorem for families of pseudodifferential operators generalizing those studied by C. Callias, N. Anghel and others. Specifically, we consider operators on a manifold with boundary equipped with an asymptotically conic (scattering) metric, which have the form D + iΦ, where D is elliptic pseudodifferential with Hermitian symbols, and Φ is a Hermitian bundle endomorphism which is invertible at the boundary and commutes with the symbol of D there. The index of such operators is completely determined by the symbolic data over the boundary. We use the scattering calculus of R. Melrose in order to prove our results using methods of topological K-theory, and we devote special attention to the case in which D is a family of Dirac operators, in which case our theorem specializes to give family versions of the previously known index formulas.

We derive a power series formula for the p-adic regulator on the higher dimensional algebraic K-groups of number fields. This formula is designed to be well suited to computer calculations and to reduction modulo powers of p.

Let U be a connected noetherian scheme of finite étale cohomological dimension in which every finite set of points is contained in an affine open subscheme. Suppose that α is a class in H2(Uét,ℂm)tors. For each positive integer m, the K-theory of α-twisted sheaves is used to identify obstructions to α being representable by an Azumaya algebra of rank m2. The étale index of α, denoted eti(α), is the least positive integer such that all the obstructions vanish. Let per(α) be the order of α in H2(Uét,ℂm)tors. Methods from stable homotopy theory give an upper bound on the étale index that depends on the period of α and the étale cohomological dimension of U; this bound is expressed in terms of the exponents of the stable homotopy groups of spheres and the exponents of the stable homotopy groups of B(ℤ/(per(α))). As a corollary, if U is the spectrum of a field of finite cohomological dimension d, then , where [] is the integer part of , whenever per(α) is divided neither by the characteristic of k nor by any primes that are small relative to d.

We study cocoverings of triangulated categories, in the sense of Rouquier, and prove that for any regular cardinal α the condition of α-compactness, in the sense of Neeman, is local with respect to such cocoverings. This was established for ordinary compactness by Rouquier. Our result yields a new technique for proving that a given triangulated category is well-generated. As an application we describe the α-compact objects in the unbounded derived category of a quasi-compact and semi-separated scheme.

We study determinant functors which are defined on a triangulated category and take values in a Picard category. The two main results are the existence of a universal determinant functor for every small triangulated category, and a comparison theorem for determinant functors on a triangulated category with a non-degenerate bounded t-structure and determinant functors on its heart. For a small triangulated category Τ we give a natural definition of groups K0(Τ) and K1(Τ) in terms of the universal determinant functor on Τ, and we show that Ki(Τ) ≅ Ki(ε) for i = 0 and 1 if Τ has a non-degenerate bounded t-structure with heart ε.

Let be a moduli space of stable parabolic vector bundles of rank n ≥ 2 and fixed determinant of degree d over a compact connected Riemann surface X of genus g(X) ≥ g(X) = 2, then we assume that n > 2. Let m denote the greatest common divisor of d, n and the dimensions of all the successive quotients of the quasi–parabolic filtrations. We prove that the Brauer group Br is isomorphic to the cyclic group ℤ/mℤ. We also show that Br is generated by the Brauer class of the Brauer–Severi variety over obtained by restricting the universal projective bundle over X × .

We describe a 2-dimensional analogue of track categories, called two-track categories, and show that it can be used to model categories enriched in 2-type mapping spaces. We also define a Baues-Wirsching type cohomology theory for track categories, and explain how it can be used to classify two-track extensions of a track category by a module over .

Gross and Hopkins have proved that in chromatic stable homotopy, Spanier-Whitehead duality nearly coincides with Brown-Comenetz duality. We give a conceptual interpretation of this phenomenon in terms of a Gorenstein condition [8] for maps of ring spectra.

We prove that the homology of unitary groups over rings of S-integers in number fields stabilizes. Results of this kind are well known to follow from the high acyclicity of ad-hoc polyhedra. Given this, we exhibit two simple conditions on the arithmetic of hermitian forms over a ring A relatively to an anti-automorphism which, if they are satisfied, imply the stabilization of the homology of the corresponding unitary groups. When R is a ring of S-integers in a number field K, and A is a maximal R-order in an associative composition algebra F over K, we use the strong approximation theorem to show that both of these properties are satisfied. Finally we take a closer look at the case of On(ℤ[½]).

This paper examines the relation between the Euler class group of a Noetherian ring and the Euler class group of its polynomial extension. When the ring is a smooth affine domain, the two groups are canonically isomorphic. This is a consequence of a theorem of Bhatwadekar-Sridharan, which they proved in order to answer a question of Nori on sections of projective modules over such rings. If the smoothness assumption is removed, the result of Bhatwadekar-Sridharan is no longer valid and also the Euler class groups above are not in general isomorphic. In this paper we investigate a variant of Nori's question for arbitrary Noetherian rings and derive several consequences to understand the relation between various groups in the theory of Euler classes.

Let S be a degree six del Pezzo surface over an arbitrary field F. Motivated by the first author's classification of all such S up to isomorphism [3] in terms of a separable F-algebra B×Q×F, and by his K-theory isomorphism Kn(S) ≅ Kn(B×Q×F) for n ≥ 0, we prove an equivalence of derived categories

where A is an explicitly given finite dimensional F-algebra whose semisimple part is B×Q×F.

We use the cylindrical homomorphism and a geometric construction introduced by J. Lewis to study the Lawson homology groups of certain hypersurfaces X ⊂ ℙn + 1 of degree d ℙ n + 1. As an application, we compute the rational semi-topological K-theory of generic cubics of dimensions 5, 6 and 8 and, using the Bloch-Kato conjecture, we prove Suslin's conjecture for these varieties. Using generic cubic sevenfolds, we show that there are smooth projective varieties such that the lowest nontrivial step in their s-filtration is infinitely generated and undetected by the Abel-Jacobi map.

We present structure theorems in terms of inertial decompositions for the wreath product ring of an orbifold presented as the quotient of a smooth, closed manifold by a compact, connected Lie group acting almost freely. In particular we show that this ring admits λ-ring and Hopf algebra structures both abstractly and directly. This generalizes results known for global quotient orbifolds by finite groups.

In the context of 2-summable Fredholm modules, we prove that the Connes-Karoubi multiplicative character coincides with Brown's determinant invariant on algebraic K-theory.

In their 2007 paper, Jarvis, Kaufmann, and Kimura defined the full orbifoldK-theory of an orbifold , analogous to the Chen-Ruan orbifold cohomology of in that it uses the obstruction bundle as a quantum correction to the multiplicative structure. We give an explicit algorithm for the computation of this orbifold invariant in the case when arises as an abelian symplectic quotient. To this end, we introduce the inertial K-theory associated to a T -action on a stably complex manifold M, where T is a compact abelian Lie group. Our methods are integral K-theoretic analogues of those used in the orbifold cohomology case by Goldin, Holm, and Knutson in 2005. We rely on the K-theoretic Kirwan surjectivity methods developed by Harada and Landweber. As a worked class of examples, we compute the full orbifold K-theory of weighted projective spaces that occur as a symplectic quotient of a complex affine space by a circle. Our computations hold over the integers, and in the particular case of these weighted projective spaces, we show that the associated invariant is torsion-free.
