Suppose that α = γ + δ where γ ≥ δ > 0. Then there is a graph which has no independent set of order type and has no pentagram (a pentagram is a set of five points with all pairs joined by edges). In the notation of Erdős and Rado. who generalized Ramsey's Theorem to this setting.

We introduce a sequent calculus B for a new logic, named basic logic. The aim of basic logic is to find a structure in the space of logics. Classical, intuitionistic. quantum and non-modal linear logics, are all obtained as extensions in a uniform way and in a single framework. We isolate three properties, which characterize B positively: reflection, symmetry and visibility.

A logical constant obeys to the principle of reflection if it is characterized semantically by an equation binding it with a metalinguistic link between assertions, and if its syntactic inference rules are obtained by solving that equation. All connectives of basic logic satisfy reflection.

To the control of weakening and contraction of linear logic, basic logic adds a strict control of contexts, by requiring that all active formulae in all rules are isolated, that is visible. From visibility, cut-elimination follows. The full, geometric symmetry of basic logic induces known symmetries of its extensions, and adds a symmetry among them, producing the structure of a cube.

We show that true first-order arithmetic is interpretable over the real-algebraic structure of models of intuitionistic analysis built upon a certain class of complete Heyting algebras. From this the undecidability of the structures follows. We also show that Scott's model is equivalent to true second-order arithmetic. In the appendix we argue that undecidability on the language of ordered rings follows from intuitionistically plausible properties of the real numbers.

We prove for any μ = μ<μ < θ < λ. λ large enough (just strongly inaccessible Mahlo) the consistency of and even for σ < μ. The new point is that possibly 0 > μ+.

We consider a finite universe (more exactly—a family of them), second order quantifiers QK, where for each this means quantifying over a family of n(K)-place relations closed under permuting . We define some natural orders and shed some light on the classification problem of those quantifiers.

Evidence is given that implication (and its special case, negation) carry the logical strength of a system of formal logic. This is done by proving normalization and cut elimination for a system based on combinatory logic or λ-calculus with logical constants for and, or, all, and exists, but with none for either implication or negation. The proof is strictly finitary, showing that this system is very weak. The results can be extended to a “classical” version of the system. They can also be extended to a system with a restricted set of rules for implication: the result is a system of intuitionistic higher-order BCK logic with unrestricted comprehension and without restriction on the rules for disjunction elimination and existential elimination. The result does not extend to the classical version of the BCK logic.

A structure (M, <, …) is called quasi-o-minimal if in any structure elementarily equivalent to it the definable subsets are exactly the Boolean combinations of 0-definable subsets and intervals. We give a series of natural examples of quasi-o-minimal structures which are not o-minimal; one of them is the ordered group of integers. We develop a technique to investigate quasi-o-minimality and use it to study quasi-o-minimal ordered groups (possibly with extra structure). Main results: any quasi-o-minimal ordered group is abelian; any quasi-o-minimal ordered ring is a real closed field, or has zero multiplication; every quasi-o-minimal divisible ordered group is o-minimal; every quasi-o-minimal archimedian densely ordered group is divisible. We show that a counterpart of quasi-o-minimality in stability theory is the notion of theory of U-rank 1.

We show that to every recursive total continuous functional Φ there is a PCF-definable representative Ψ of Φ in the hierarchy of partial continuous functionals, where PCF is Plotkin's programming language for computable functionals. PCF-definable is equivalent to Kleene's S1–S9-computable over the partial continuous functionals.

Among others we will prove that the equational theory of ω dimensional representable polyadic equality algebras (RPEAω's) is not schema axiomatizable. This result is in interesting contrast with the Daigneault-Monk representation theorem, which states that the class of representable polyadic algebras is finite schema-axiomatizable (and hence the equational theory of this class is finite schema-axiomatizable. as well). We will also show that the complexity of the equational theory of RPEAω is also extremely high in the recursion theoretic sense. Finally, comparing the present negative results with the positive results of Ildikó Sain and Viktor Gyuris [12], the following methodological conclusions will be drawn: The negative properties of polyadic (equality) algebras can be removed by switching from what we call the “polyadic algebraic paradigm” to the “cylindric algebraic paradigm”.

Using recent results in topos theory, two systems of higher-order logic are shown to be complete with respect to sheaf models over topological spaces—so-called “topological semantics”. The first is classical higher-order logic, with relational quantification of finitely high type; the second system is a predicative fragment thereof with quantification over functions between types, but not over arbitrary relations. The second theorem applies to intuitionistic as well as classical logic.

The completeness proof for first-order logic by Rasiowa and Sikorski [13] is a simplification of Henkin's proof [7] in that it avoids the addition of infinitely many new individual constants. Instead they show that each consistent set of formulae can be extended to a maximally consistent set, satisfying the following existence property: if it contains (∃x)ϕ it also contains some substitution ϕ(y/x) of a variable y for x. In Feferman's review [5] of [13], an improvement, due to Tarski, is given by which the proof gets a simple algebraic form.

Sambin [16] used the same method in the setting of formal topology [15], thereby obtaining a constructive completeness proof. This proof is elementary and can be seen as a constructive and predicative version of the one in Feferman's review. It is a typical, and simple, example where the use of formal topology gives constructive sense to the existence of a generic object, satisfying some forcing conditions; in this case an ultrafilter satisfying the existence property.

In order to get a formal topology on the set of first-order formulae, Sambin used the Dedekind-MacNeille completion to define a covering relation ⊲DM. This method, by which an arbitrary poset can be extended to a complete poset, was introduced by MacNeille [9] and is a generalization of the construction of real numbers from rationals by Dedekind cuts. It is also possible to define an inductive cover, ⊲I, on the set of formulae, which can also be used to give canonical models, see Coquand and Smith [3].

We characterise explicitly the decidable predicates on integers of Infinite Time Turing machines, in terms of admissibility theory and the constructible hierarchy. We do this by pinning down ζ, the least ordinal not the length of any eventual output of an Infinite Time Turing machine (halting or otherwise); using this the Infinite Time Turing Degrees are considered, and it is shown how the jump operator coincides with the production of mastercodes for the constructible hierarchy; further that the natural ordinals associated with the jump operator satisfy a Spector criterion, and correspond to the Lζ-stables. It also implies that the machines devised are “Σ2 Complete” amongst all such other possible machines. It is shown that least upper bounds of an “eventual jump” hierarchy exist on an initial segment.

In this paper we prove the equiconsistency of “Every ω1 –tree which is first order definable over (, ε) has a cofinal branch” with the existence of a reflecting cardinal. We also prove that the addition of MA to the definable tree property increases the consistency strength to that of a weakly compact cardinal. Finally we comment on the generalization to higher cardinals.

For a theory T in L, Tσ is the theory of the models of T with an automorphism σ. If T is an unstable model complete theory without the independence property, then Tσ has no model companion. If T is an unstable model complete theory and Tσ has the amalgamation property, then Tσ has no model companion. If T is model complete and has the fcp, then Tσ has no model completion.

We define classes Φn of formulae of first-order arithmetic with the following properties:

(i) Every φ ϵ Φn is classically equivalent to a Πn-formula (n ≠ 1, Φ1 := Σ1).

(ii)

(iii) IΠn and iΦn (i.e., Heyting arithmetic with induction schema restricted to Φn-formulae) prove the same Π2-formulae.

We further generalize a result by Visser and Wehmeier. namely that prenex induction within intuitionistic arithmetic is rather weak: After closing Φn both under existential and universal quantification (we call these classes Θn) the corresponding theories iΘn still prove the same Π2-formulae. In a second part we consider iΔ0 plus collection-principles. We show that both the provably recursive functions and the provably total functions of are polynomially bounded. Furthermore we show that the contrapositive of the collection-schema gives rise to instances of the law of excluded middle and hence .

A combinatorial criterium is given when a monadic quantifier is expressible by means of universe-independent monadic quantifiers of width n. It is proved that the corresponding hierarchy does not collapse. As an application, it is shown that the second resumption (or vectorization) of the Härtig quantifier is not definable by monadic quantifiers. The techniques rely on Ramsey theory.

The choice construct (choose x: φ(x)) is useful in software specifications. We study extensions of first-order logic with the choice construct. We prove some results about Hilbert's ε operator, but in the main part of the paper we consider the case when all choices are independent.

Let be the class of structures 〈λ, <, A〉, where A ⊆ λ is disjoint from a club, and let be the class of structures 〈λ, <, A), where A ⊆ λ contains a club. We prove that if λ = λ<κ is regular, then no sentence of Lλ + κ separates and On the other hand, we prove that if λ = μ+ , μ = μ<μ, and a forcing axiom holds (and if μ = ℵ0), then there is a sentence of Lλλ which separates and .

One of the main tools in the study of nonmonotonic consequence relations is the representation of such relations in terms of preferential models. In this paper we give an unified and simpler framework to obtain such representation theorems.

In [1], S. Buss introduced the systems of Bounded Arithmetic for (i = 0,1,2,…) which has a close relationship to classes in polynomial hierarchy.

In [4], we defined a very special kind of proof-predicate Prfi for which gives detailed information on bounds of free variables used in the proof. There we also introduced infinitely many Gödel sentences for Prfi (k = 0, 1, 2, …) and showed that the properties of Prfi and are closely related to the P ≠ NP problem. Then we presented many conjectures on Prfi and which imply P ≠ NP.

Now in [2], Feferman emphasized that the arithmetization of metamathematics must be carried out intensionally. Bounded Arithmetic is a very interesting case in this sense.

In this paper, we also introduce the usual proof-predicate PRFi for and infinitely many Gödel sentences for PRFi(k= 0, 1, 2, …). Then we show that (Prfi, )and (PRFi, ) form a good contrast, this contrast is also closely related to the P ≠ NP problem, and present more conjectures which imply P ≠ NP.
