1. We show that if p is a real type which is internal in a set Σ of partial types in a simple theory, then there is a type p′ interbounded with p, which is finitely generated over Σ, and possesses a fundamental system of solutions relative to Σ.

2. If p is a possibly hyperimaginary Lascar strong type, almost Σ-internal, but almost orthogonal to Σω, then there is a canonical non-trivial almost hyperdefinable polygroup which multi-acts on p while fixing Σ generically In case p is Σ-internal and T is stable, this is the binding group of p over Σ.

Let I be an ideal of subsets of a Polish space X, containing all singletons and possessing a Borel basis. Assuming that I does not satisfy ccc, we consider the following conditions (B), (M) and (D). Condition (B) states that there is a disjoint family F ⊆ P(X) of size ϲ, consisting of Borel sets which are not in I. Condition (M) states that there is a Borel function f : X → X with f−1[{x}] ∉ I for each x ∈ X. Provided that X is a group and I is invariant, condition (D) states that there exist a Borel set B ∉ I and a perfect set P ⊆ X for which the family {B+x : x ∈ P} is disjoint. The aim of the paper is to study whether the reverse implications in the chain (D) ⇒ (M) ⇒ (B) ⇒ not-ccc can hold. We build a σ-ideal on the Cantor group witnessing (M) & ¬(D) (Section 2). A modified version of that σ-ideal contains the whole space (Section 3). Some consistency results on deriving (M) from (B) for “nicely” defined ideals are established (Sections 4 and 5). We show that both ccc and (M) can fail (Theorems 1.3 and 5.6). Finally, some sharp version's of (M) for invariant ideals on Polish groups are investigated (Section 6).

We study the class of weakly locally modular geometric theories introduced in [4], a common generalization of the classes of linear SU-rank 1 and linear o-minimal theories. We find new conditions equivalent to weak local modularity: “weak one-basedness”, absence of type definable “almost quasidesigns”, and “generic linearity”. Among other things, we show that weak one-basedness is closed under reducts. We also show that the lovely pair expansion of a non-trivial weakly one-based ω-categorical geometric theory interprets an infinite vector space over a finite field.

It has been considered desirable by many set theorists to find maximality properties which state that the universe has in some sense “many sets”. The properties isolated thus far have tended to be consistent with each other (as far as we know). For example it is a widely held view that the existence of a supercompact cardinal is consistent with the axiom of determinacy holding in L(R). This consistency has been held to be evidence for the truth of these properties. It is with this in mind that the first author suggested the following:

Maximality Principle If P is a partial ordering and G ⊆ P is a V-generic ultrafilter then either

• a) there is a real number r ∈ V [G] with r ∉ V, or

• b) there is an ordinal α such that α is a cardinal in V but not in V[G].

This maximality principle applied to garden variety partial orderings has startling results for the structure of V.

For example, if for some , then P = 〈{p: p ⊆ κ, ∣p∣ < κ}, ⊆〉 neither adds a real nor collapses a cardinal. Thus from the maximality principle we can deduce that the G. C. H. fails everywhere and there are no inaccessible cardinals. (Hence this principle contradicts large cardinals.) Similarly one can show that there are no Suslin trees on any cardinal κ. These consequences help justify the title “maximality principle”.

Since the maximality principle implies that the G. C. H. fails at strong singular limit cardinals it has consistency strength at least that of “many large cardinals”. (See [M].) On the other hand it is not known to be consistent, relative to any assumptions.

Let S be the group of finitely supported permutations of a countably infinite set. Let $K[S]$ be the group algebra of S over a field K of characteristic 0. According to a theorem of Formanek and Lawrence, $K[S]$ satisfies the ascending chain condition for two-sided ideals. We study the reverse mathematics of this theorem, proving its equivalence over $RC{A_0}$ (or even over $RCA_0^{\rm{*}}$) to the statement that ${\omega ^\omega }$ is well ordered. Our equivalence proof proceeds via the statement that the Young diagrams form a well partial ordering.

We consider separably closed fields of characteristic p > 0 and fixed imperfection degree as modules over a skew polynomial ring. We axiomatize the corresponding theory and we show that it is complete and that it admits quantifier elimination in the usual module language augmented with additive functions which are the analog of the p-component functions.

We prove that cons(ZF) implies cons(ZF + Borel conjecture + there exists a Ramsey ultrafilter). We also prove some results on strong measure zero sets from the existence of generalized Luzin sets. We study the relationships between strong measure zero sets and rapid filters on ω.

For the terminology and motivation of this note, my earlier paper [3] should be consulted. Here I make a slight change by requiring the Intuitionist Propositional Logic H to be given in terms of axiom schemata rather than axioms.

Definition. An axiom schema F is essentially negative iff each schematic letter appearing in F is negated.

Thus the schemata (¬P ∨ ¬¬P), (¬¬(¬P ∨ ¬Q)→(¬P ∨ ¬Q)) are essentially negative, whereas (¬P ∨ P) and (¬¬P→P) are not.

Lemma. Let F be an essentially negative axiom schema. Then F yields at most finitely many intuitionistically nonequivalent axioms whose atoms are chosen from a fixed finite set.

A notion of interpretation between arbitrary logics is introduced, and the poset $\mathsf {Log}$ of all logics ordered under interpretability is studied. It is shown that in $\mathsf {Log}$ infima of arbitrarily large sets exist, but binary suprema in general do not. On the other hand, the existence of suprema of sets of equivalential logics is established. The relations between $\mathsf {Log}$ and the lattice of interpretability types of varieties are investigated.

In this paper we study the logic of relational and partial variable sets, seen as a generalization of set-valued presheaves, allowing transition functions to be arbitrary relations or arbitrary partial functions. We find that such a logic is the usual intuitionistic and co-intuitionistic first order logic without Beck and Frobenius conditions relative to quantifiers along arbitrary terms. The important case of partial variable sets is axiomatizable by means of the substitutivity schema for equality. Furthermore, completeness, incompleteness and independence results are obtained for different kinds of Beck and Frobenius conditions.

One of the main theorems of the paper states the following. Let R-K-M be finite extensions of a rational one variable function field R over a finite field of constants. Let S be a finite set of valuations of K. Then the ring of elements of K having no poles outside S has a Diophantine definition over its integral closure in M.

We prove that for p-optimal fields (a very large subclass of p-minimal fields containing all the known examples) a cell decomposition theorem follows from methods going back to Denef’s paper [7]. We derive from it the existence of definable Skolem functions and strong p-minimality. Then we turn to strongly p-minimal fields satisfying the Extreme Value Property—a property which in particular holds in fields which are elementarily equivalent to a p-adic one. For such fields K, we prove that every definable subset of K × Kd whose fibers over K are inverse images by the valuation of subsets of the value group is semialgebraic. Combining the two we get a preparation theorem for definable functions on p-optimal fields satisfying the Extreme Value Property, from which it follows that infinite sets definable over such fields are in definable bijection iff they have the same dimension.

Suppose D ⊂ M is a strongly minimal set definable in M with parameters from C. We say D is locally modular if for all X, Y ⊂ D, with X = acl(X ∪ C)∩D, Y = acl(Y ∪ C) ∩ D and X ∩ Y ≠ ∅,

We prove the following theorems.

Theorem 1. Suppose M is stable and D ⊂ M is strongly minimal. If D is not locally modular then inMeqthere is a definable pseudoplane.

(For a discussion of Meq see [M, §A].) This is the main part of Theorem 1 of [Z2] and the trichotomy theorem of [Z3].

Theorem 2. Suppose M is stable and D, D′ ⊂ M are strongly minimal and nonorthogonal. Then D is locally modular if and only if D′ is locally modular.

Let CH be the class of compacta (i.e., compact Hausdorff spaces), with BS the subclass of Boolean spaces. For each ordinal α and pair (K, L) of subclasses of CH, we define Lev≥α(K, L), the class of maps of level at least α from spaces in K to spaces in L, in such a way that, for finite α, Lev≥α(BS, BS) consists of the Stone duals of Boolean lattice embeddings that preserve all prenex first-order formulas of quantifier rank α. Maps of level ≥ 0 are just the continuous surjections, and the maps of level ≥ 1 are the co-existential maps introduced in [8]. Co-elementary maps are of level ≥ω a for all ordinals α: of course in the Boolean context, the co-elementary maps coincide with the maps of level ≥ ω. The results of this paper include:

(i) every map of level ≥ ωis co-elementary;

(ii) the limit maps of an co-indexed inverse system of maps of level ≥ α are also of level ≥ α; and

(iii) if K is a co-elementary class, k > ω and Lev≥k(K,K) = Lev≥k+1(K,K), then Lev≥1(K,K) = Lev≥(K,K).

A space X ∈ K is co-existentially closed inK if Lev≥0(K, X) = Lev≥1(K,X). Adapting the technique of “adding roots,” by which one builds algebraically closed extensions of fields (and, more generally, existentially closed extensions of models of universal-existential theories), we showed in [8] that every infinite member of a co-inductive co-elementary class (such as CH itself, BS, or the class CON of continua) is a continuous image of a space of the same weight that is co-existentially closed in that class. We show here that every compactum that is co-existentially closed in CON (a co-existentially closed continuum) is both indecomposable and of covering dimension one.

For any linear order type τ with first element let be the Boolean set algebra generated by the left-closed right-open (including [x, ∞)) intervals of some linear order of type τ. Let η and ω be the order types of the rationals and natural numbers respectively (when not used as an order type, ω will, as usual, be the set of nonnegative integers). We show that the Boolean algebra of the elementary theory of well-orders, i.e., the Boolean algebra of elementary classes of well-orders or, equivalently, the algebra of equivalence classes of sentences of the elementary theory of well-orders, is isomorphic to and that the Boolean algebra of the elementary theory of abelian groups is isomorphic to . Both results are obtained by applying Hanf's structure diagram technique to the work of Mostowski, Tarski, and Szmielew. One may formalize discussion of algebras of proper classes by assuming the classes are included in a universe which is a set in a larger universe.Given a Boolean algebra, let 0 be its zero and 1 its unit, let ≤ be its associated partial ordering, and, for any elements a, b, and c of the algebra, let “a + b = c ” be the assertion that c is the disjoint sum of a and b. A subset of the algebra disjointly generates the algebra iff each of the algebra's elements is a disjoint sum of a finite number of the subset's elements.

A coarse description of a set A ⊆ ω is a set D ⊆ ω such that the symmetric difference of A and D has asymptotic density 0. We study the extent to which noncomputable information can be effectively recovered from all coarse descriptions of a given set A, especially when A is effectively random in some sense. We show that if A is 1-random and B is computable from every coarse description D of A, then B is K-trivial, which implies that if A is in fact weakly 2-random then B is computable. Our main tool is a kind of compactness theorem for cone-avoiding descriptions, which also allows us to prove the same result for 1-genericity in place of weak 2-randomness. In the other direction, we show that if $A \le _{{\rm{T}}} \emptyset {\rm{'}}$ is a 1-random set, then there is a noncomputable c.e. set computable from every coarse description of A, but that not all K-trivial sets are computable from every coarse description of some 1-random set. We study both uniform and nonuniform notions of coarse reducibility. A set Y is uniformly coarsely reducible to X if there is a Turing functional Φ such that if D is a coarse description of X, then ΦD is a coarse description of Y. A set B is nonuniformly coarsely reducible to A if every coarse description of A computes a coarse description of B. We show that a certain natural embedding of the Turing degrees into the coarse degrees (both uniform and nonuniform) is not surjective. We also show that if two sets are mutually weakly 3-random, then their coarse degrees form a minimal pair, in both the uniform and nonuniform cases, but that the same is not true of every pair of relatively 2-random sets, at least in the nonuniform coarse degrees.

We modify the definable ultrapower construction of Kanovei and Shelah (2004) to develop a ZF-definable extension of the continuum with transfer provable using countable choice only, with an additional mild hypothesis on well-ordering implying properness. Under the same assumptions, we also prove the existence of a definable, proper elementary extension of the standard superstructure over the reals.

Where a is a Turing degree and ξ is an ordinal < (ℵ1)L1, the result of performing ξ jumps on a, a(ξ), is defined set-theoretically, using Jensen's fine-structure results. This operation appears to be the natural extension through (ℵ1)L1 of the ordinary jump operations. We describe this operation in more degree-theoretic terms, examine how much of it could be defined in degree-theoretic terms and compare it to the single jump operation.
