We introduce the safe recursive set functions based on a Bellantoni–Cook style subclass of the primitive recursive set functions. We show that the functions computed by safe recursive set functions under a list encoding of finite strings by hereditarily finite sets are exactly the polynomial growth rate functions computed by alternating exponential time Turing machines with polynomially many alternations. We also show that the functions computed by safe recursive set functions under a more efficient binary tree encoding of finite strings by hereditarily finite sets are exactly the quasipolynomial growth rate functions computed by alternating quasipolynomial time Turing machines with polylogarithmic many alternations.

We characterize the safe recursive set functions on arbitrary sets in definability-theoretic terms. In its strongest form, we show that a function on arbitrary sets is safe recursive if and only if it is uniformly definable in some polynomial level of a refinement of Jensen's J-hierarchy, relativized to the transitive closure of the function's arguments.

We observe that safe recursive set functions on infinite binary strings are equivalent to functions computed by infinite-time Turing machines in time less than ωω. We also give a machine model for safe recursive set functions which is based on set-indexed parallel processors and the natural bound on running times.

We calculate the Cantor-Bendixson rank of the Ziegler spectrum over a commutative valuation domain R proving that it is equal to the double Krull dimension of R.

Let M be an o-minimal structure or a p-adically closed field. Let be the space of complete n-types over M equipped with the following topology: The basic open sets of are of the form Ũ = {p ∈ Sn (M): U ∈ p} for U an open definable subset of Mn . is a spectral space. (For M = K a real closed field, is precisely the real spectrum of K[X 1, …, Xn ]; see [CR].) We will equip with a sheaf of LM -structures (where LM is a suitable language). Again for M a real closed field this corresponds to the structure sheaf on (see [S]). Our main point is that when Th(M) has definable Skolem functions, then if p ∈ , it follows that M(p), the definable ultrapower of M at p, can be factored through Mp , the stalk at p with respect to the above sheaf. This depends on the observation that if M ≺ N, a ∈ Nn and f is an M-definable (partial) function defined at a, then there is an open M-definable set U ⊂ Nn with a ∈ U, and a continuous M-definable function g:U → N such that g(a) = f(a).

In the case that M is an o-minimal expansion of a real closed field (or M is a p-adically closed field), it turns out that M(p) can be recovered as the unique quotient of Mp which is an elementary extension of M.

Natural deduction systems with indefinite and definite descriptions (ε-terms and ι-terms) are presented, and interpreted in Martin-LÖf's intensional type theory. The interpretations are formalizations of ideas which are implicit in the literature of constructive mathematics: if we have proved that an element with a certain property exists, we speak of ‘the element such that the property holds’ and refer by that phrase to the element constructed in the existence proof. In particular, we deviate from the practice of interpreting descriptions by contextual definitions.

In [12], Schwichtenberg showed that the System T definable functionals are closed under a rule-like version Spector’s bar recursion of lowest type levels 0 and 1. More precisely, if the functional Y which controls the stopping condition of Spector’s bar recursor is T-definable, then the corresponding bar recursion of type levels 0 and 1 is already T-definable. Schwichtenberg’s original proof, however, relies on a detour through Tait’s infinitary terms and the correspondence between ordinal recursion for $\alpha < {\varepsilon _0}$ and primitive recursion over finite types. This detour makes it hard to calculate on given concrete system T input, what the corresponding system T output would look like. In this paper we present an alternative (more direct) proof based on an explicit construction which we prove correct via a suitably defined logical relation. We show through an example how this gives a straightforward mechanism for converting bar recursive definitions into T-definitions under the conditions of Schwichtenberg’s theorem. Finally, with the explicit construction we can also easily state a sharper result: if Y is in the fragment Ti then terms built from $BR^{\mathbb{N},\sigma } $ for this particular Y are definable in the fragment ${T_{i + {\rm{max}}\left\{ {1,{\rm{level}}\left( \sigma \right)} \right\} + 2}}$.

It is a well-known fact that the notion of an archimedean order cannot be formalized in the first-order calculus. In [12] and [18], A. Robinson and E. Zakon characterized the elementary class generated by all the archimedean, totally-ordered abelian groups (o-groups) in the language 〈+,<〉, calling it the class of regularly ordered or generalized archimedean abelian groups. Since difference (−) and 0 are definable in that language, it is immediate that in the expanded language 〈 +, −, 0, < 〉 the definable expansion of the class of regular groups is also the elementary class generated by the archimedean ones. In the more general context of lattice-ordered groups (l-groups), the notion of being archimedean splits into two different notions: a strong one (being hyperarchimedean) and a weak one (being archimedean). Using the representation theorem of K. Keimel for hyperarchimedean l-groups, we extend in this paper the Robinson and Zakon characterization to the elementary class generated by the prime-projectable, hyperarchimedean l-groups. This characterization is also extended here to the elementary class generated by the prime-projectable and projectable archimedean l-groups (including all complete l-groups). Finally, transferring a result of A. Touraille on the model theory of Boolean algebras with distinguished ideals, we give the classification up to elementary equivalence of the characterized class.

In the paper Mathematics of infinity, Martin-Löf extends his intuitionistic type theory with fixed “choice sequences”. The simplest, and most important instance, is given by adding the axioms

to the type of natural numbers. Martin-Löf's type theory can be regarded as an extension of Heyting arithmetic (HA). In this note we state and prove Martin-Löf's main result for this choice sequence, in the simpler setting of HA and other arithmetical theories based on intuitionistic logic (Theorem A). We also record some remarkable properties of the resulting systems; in general, these lack the disjunction property and may or may not have the explicit definability property. Moreover, they represent all recursive functions by terms.

The following problem is studied: How large and how small can the Löwenheim and Hanf numbers of unbounded logics be in relation to the most common large cardinals? The main result is that the Löwenheim number of the logic with the Härtig-quantifier can be consistently put in between any two of the first weakly inaccessible, the first weakly Mahlo, the first weakly compact, the first Ramsey, the first measurable and the first supercompact cardinals.

We take a fixed countable model M0, and we look at the structure of and number of its countable elementary extensions (up to isomorphism over M0). Assuming that S(M0) is countable, we prove that if N is a weakly minimal extension of , and if then there is an elementary embedding of N into M over M0), then N is homogeneous over M0. Moreover the condition that ∣S(M0)∣ = ℵ0 cannot be removed. Under the hypothesis that M0 contains no infinite set of tuples ordered by a formula, we prove that M0 has infinitely many countable elementary extensions up to isomorphism over M0. A preliminary result is that all types over M0 are definable, and moreover is definable over M0 if and only if is definable over M0 (forking symmetry). We also introduce a notion of relative homogeneity, and show that a large class of elementary extensions of M0 are relatively homogeneous over M0 (under the assumptions that M0 has no order and S(M0) is countable).

I will now discuss the background to and motivation behind the results in this paper, and also the place of this paper relative to other conjectures and investigations. To simplify notation let T denote the complete diagram of M0. First, our result that if M0 has no order then T has infinitely many countable models is related to the following conjecture: any theory with a finite number (more than one) of countable models is unstable.

Work in the setting of the recursively enumerable sets and their Turing degrees. A set X is low if X′, its Turing jump, is recursive in ∅′ and high if X′ computes ∅″. Attempting to find a property between being low and being recursive, Bickford and Mills produced the following definition. W is deep, if for each recursively enumerable set A, the jump of A ⊕ W is recursive in the jump of A. We prove that there are no deep degrees other than the recursive one.

Given a set W, we enumerate a set A and approximate its jump. The construction of A is governed by strategies, indexed by the Turing functionals Φ. Simplifying the situation, a typical strategy converts a failure to recursively compute W into a constraint on the enumeration of A, so that (W ⊕ A)′ is forced to disagree with Φ(−;A′). The conversion has some ambiguity; in particular, A cannot be found uniformly from W.

We also show that there is a “moderately” deep degree: There is a low nonzero degree whose join with any other low degree is not high.

We show that the class of ${\cal L}$-constructible functions is closed under integration for any P-minimal expansion of a p-adic field $\left( {K,{\cal L}} \right)$. This generalizes results previously known for semi-algebraic and subanalytic structures. As part of the proof, we obtain a weak version of cell decomposition and function preparation for P-minimal structures, a result which is independent of the existence of Skolem functions. A direct corollary is that Denef’s results on the rationality of Poincaré series hold in any P-minimal expansion of a p-adic field $\left( {K,{\cal L}} \right)$.

Reverse mathematics uses subsystems of second order arithmetic to determine which set existence axioms are required to prove particular theorems. Surprisingly, almost every theorem studied is either provable in RCA0 or equivalent over RCA0 to one of four other subsystems: WKL0, ACA0, ATR0 or – CA0. Of these subsystems, – CA0 has the fewest known equivalences. This article presents a new equivalence of – C0 which comes from ordered group theory.

One of the fundamental problems about ordered groups is to classify all possible orders for various classes of orderable groups. In general, this problem is extremely difficult to solve. Mal'tsev [1949] solved a related problem by showing that the order type of a countable ordered group is ℤαℚε where ℤ is the order type of the integers, ℚ is the order type of the rationals, α is a countable ordinal, and ε is either 0 or 1. The goal of this article is to prove that this theorem is equivalent over RCA0 to – CA0.

In Section 2, we give the basic definitions and notation for RCA0, ACA0 and CA0 as well as for ordered groups. For more information on reverse mathematics, see Friedman, Simpson, and Smith [1983] or Simpson [1999] and for ordered groups, see Kokorin and Kopytov [1974] or Fuchs [1963]. Our notation will follow these sources. In Section 3, we show that – CA0 suffices to prove Mal'tsev's Theorem and the reversal is done over RCA0 in Section 4.

The Gödel Class is the class of prenex formulas of pure quantification theory whose prefixes have the form ∀y1∀y2∃x1 … ∃xn. The Gödel Class with Identity, or GCI, is the corresponding class of formulas of quantification theory extended by inclusion of the identity-sign “ = ”. Although the Gödel Class has long been kndwn to be solvable, the decision problem for the Gödel Class with Identity is open. In this paper we prove that there is no primitive recursive decision procedure for the GCI, or, indeed, for the subclass of the GCI containing just those formulas with prefixes ∀y1∀y2∃x.

Throughout this paper we take quantification theory to include, aside from logical signs, infinitely many k-place predicate letters for each k > 0, but no function signs or constants. Moreover, by “prenex formula” we include only those without free variables. A decision procedure for a class of formulas is a recursive function that carries a formula in the class to 0 if the formula is satisfiable and to 1 if not. A class is solvable iff there exists a decision procedure for it. A class is finitely controllable iff every satisfiable formula in the class has a finite model. Since we speak only of effectively specified classes, finite controllability implies solvability (but not conversely).

The GCI has a curious history. Gödel showed the Gödel Class (without identity) solvable in 1932 [4] and finitely controllable in 1933 [5].

We are concerned here with the set theory given in [1], which we call BL (Bernays-Levy). This theory can be given an elegant syntactical presentation which allows most of the usual axioms to be deduced from the reflection principle. However, it is more convenient here to take the usual Von Neumann-Bernays set theory [3] as a starting point, and to regard BL as arising from the addition of the schema

In this paper we discuss cylindric algebras with terms. The setting is two—sorted algebras—one sort for terms and one for Boolean elements. As with cylindric algebras, a cylindric algebra with terms has its roots in first order predicate logic [HMT1].

Let Σ be a set of sentences in a first order language with terms, equality and variables u0,u1,u2, …, Define a relation ≡Σ on Fm, the set of formulas, by φ ≡Σθ if and only if Σ ⊢ φ ↔ θ, and on Tm, the set of terms, by τ ≡Σσ if and only if Σ ⊢ τ ≈ σ. The operations +, ·, cκ, 0, 1 are defined as usual on equivalence classes. Define , where is σ with τ substituted for all occurrences of uκ. That the operation *κ, for κ < α, is well defined follows from the first order axioms of equality. Let vκ = [uκ]. To establish the link between terms and Booleans, define operations oκ as follows: , where φ' is a variant of φ such that uκ is free for τ in φ′ and is φ′ with τ substituted for all free occurrences of uκ in φ′. From the first order axioms it follows that oκ, for κ < α, is well defined. Finally, instead of diagonal elements, we define a Boolean-valued operation on terms as follows: [τ] e [σ] = [τ ≈ σ].

The language of propositional modal logic is extended by the introduction of sequents. Validity of a modal sequent on a frame is defined, and modal sequent-axiomatic classes of frames are introduced. Through the use of modal algebras and general frames, a study of the properties of such classes is begun.

One of the most interesting concepts arising from the study of L(V∞), the lattice of r.e. subspaces of a fully effective vector space of infinite dimension (cf. [6], [7] or [10]), was that of a supermaximal subspace. Supermaximal subspaces of V∞ were those with the fewest possible r.e. superspaces, that is, we say M ∈ L(L∞) is supermaximal if dim(V∞/M) = ∞ and for all Q ∈ L(V∞) with Q ⊇ M, either dim(Q/M) < ∞ or Q = V∞. These spaces were particularly interesting because they had no natural analogue in L(ω), the lattice of r.e. sets. Later Metakides and Nerode [8], Baldwin [1] and the author [2] found that supermaximal substructures occurred in more general settings. In particular, they were found to occur in L(F∞), the lattice of r.e. algebraically closed subfields of F∞ (a recursively presented field of infinite transcendence degree) (cf. [3]). The main tool in these later papers was the concept of a Steinitz (closure) system with recursive dependence (cf. [1], [2], [4] or [8]). We assume familiarity with the definitions and basic results of Metakides and Nerode [8], and only give a brief sketch of some nonstandard facts in §2. If the reader is not familiar with Steinitz systems he is advised to either obtain [1] or [2], or simply identify a Steinitz system (U, cl) with (V∞, *), that is, he should identify U with V∞, and cl(A) with A*, the subspace generated by A.

If M is a countable transitive model of , then for every real x there is a unique shortest iteration j: M → N with x ∈ N, or none at all.

Modifying the methods of Z. Adamowicz's paper Herbrand consistency and bounded arithmetic [3] we show that there exists a number n such that ⋃mSm (the union of the bounded arithmetic theories Sm) does not prove the Herbrand consistency of the finitely axiomatizable theory S3n

An -structure is called internally presented in a nonstandard universe if its base set and interpretation of every symbol in are internal. A nonstandard universe is said to satisfy the κ-isomorphism property if for any two internally presented -structures and , where has less than κ many symbols, is elementarily equivalent to implies that is isomorphic to . In this paper we prove that the ℵ1-isomorphism property is equivalent to the ℵ0-isomorphism property plus ℵ1-saturation.
