We prove various iteration theorems for forcing classes related to subproper and subcomplete forcing, introduced by Jensen. In the first part, we use revised countable support iterations, and show that 1) the class of subproper, ${}^\omega \omega $-bounding forcing notions, 2) the class of subproper, T-preserving forcing notions (where T is a fixed Souslin tree) and 3) the class of subproper, $[T]$-preserving forcing notions (where T is an $\omega _1$-tree) are iterable with revised countable support. In the second part, we adopt Miyamoto’s theory of nice iterations, rather than revised countable support. We show that this approach allows us to drop a technical condition in the definitions of subcompleteness and subproperness, still resulting in forcing classes that are iterable in this way, preserve $\omega _1$, and, in the case of subcompleteness, don’t add reals. Further, we show that the analogs of the iteration theorems proved in the first part for RCS iterations hold for nice iterations as well.

We study the parameterized complexity of the problem to decide whether a given natural number n satisfies a given $\Delta _0$-formula $\varphi (x)$; the parameter is the size of $\varphi $. This parameterization focusses attention on instances where n is large compared to the size of $\varphi $. We show unconditionally that this problem does not belong to the parameterized analogue of $\mathsf {AC}^0$. From this we derive that certain natural upper bounds on the complexity of our parameterized problem imply certain separations of classical complexity classes. This connection is obtained via an analysis of a parameterized halting problem. Some of these upper bounds follow assuming that $I\Delta _0$ proves the MRDP theorem in a certain weak sense.

We develop a flexible method for showing that Borel witnesses to some combinatorial property of $\Delta ^1_1$ objects yield $\Delta ^1_1$ witnesses. We use a modification the Gandy–Harrington forcing method of proving dichotomies, and we can recover the complexity consequences of many known dichotomies with short and simple proofs. Using our methods, we give a simplified proof that smooth $\Delta ^1_1$ equivalence relations are $\Delta ^1_1$-reducible to equality; we prove effective versions of the Lusin–Novikov and Feldman–Moore theorems; we prove new effectivization results related to dichotomy theorems due to Hjorth and Miller (originally proven using “forceless, ineffective, and powerless” methods); and we prove a new upper bound on the complexity of the set of Schreier graphs for $\mathbb {Z}^2$ actions. We also prove an equivariant version of the $G_0$ dichotomy that implies some of these new results and a dichotomy for graphs induced by Borel actions of $\mathbb {Z}^2$.

A field K in a ring language $\mathcal {L}$ is finitely undecidable if $\mbox {Cons}(T)$ is undecidable for every nonempty finite $T \subseteq {\mathtt{Th}}(K; \mathcal {L})$. We extend a construction of Ziegler and (among other results) use a first-order classification of Anscombe and Jahnke to prove every NIP henselian nontrivially valued field is finitely undecidable. We conclude (assuming the NIP Fields Conjecture) that every NIP field is finitely undecidable. This work is drawn from the author’s PhD thesis [48, Chapter 3].

We consider of constructing normal ultrafilters in extensions are here Easton support iterations of Prikry-type forcing notions. New ways presented. It turns out that, in contrast with other supports, seemingly unrelated measures or extenders can be involved here.

We show that if a field A is not pseudo-finite, then there is no prime model of the theory of pseudo-finite fields over A. Assuming GCH, we extend this result to $\kappa $-prime models, for $\kappa $ an uncountable cardinal or $\aleph _\varepsilon $.

We investigate degree of satisfiability questions in the context of Heyting algebras and intuitionistic logic. We classify all equations in one free variable with respect to finite satisfiability gap, and determine which common principles of classical logic in multiple free variables have finite satisfiability gap. In particular we prove that, in a finite non-Boolean Heyting algebra, the probability that a randomly chosen element satisfies $x \vee \neg x = \top $ is no larger than $\frac {2}{3}$. Finally, we generalize our results to infinite Heyting algebras, and present their applications to point-set topology, black-box algebras, and the philosophy of logic.

We study H-structures associated with $SU$-rank 1 measurable structures. We prove that the $SU$-rank of the expansion is continuous and that it is uniformly definable in terms of the parameters of the formulas. We also introduce notions of dimension and measure for definable sets in the expansion and prove they are uniformly definable in terms of the parameters of the formulas.

We investigate the effect of adding $\omega _2$ Cohen reals on graphs on $\omega _2$, in particular we show that $\omega _2 \to (\omega _2, \omega : \omega )^2$ holds after forcing with $\mathsf {Add}(\omega , \omega _2)$ in a model of $\mathsf {CH}$. We also prove that this result is in a certain sense optimal as $\mathsf {Add}(\omega , \omega _2)$ forces that $\omega _2 \not \to (\omega _2, \omega : \omega _1)^2$.

We prove that the opposite of the category of coalgebras for the Vietoris endofunctor on the category of compact Hausdorff spaces is monadic over $\mathsf {Set}$. We deliver an analogous result for the upper, lower, and convex Vietoris endofunctors acting on the category of stably compact spaces. We provide axiomatizations of the associated (infinitary) varieties. This can be seen as a version of Jónsson–Tarski duality for modal algebras beyond the zero-dimensional setting.

It is consistent relative to an inaccessible cardinal that ZF+DC holds, and the hypergraph of isosceles triangles on $\mathbb {R}^2$ has countable chromatic number while the hypergraph of isosceles triangles on $\mathbb {R}^3$ has uncountable chromatic number.

We construct an existentially undecidable complete discretely valued field of mixed characteristic with existentially decidable residue field and decidable algebraic part, answering a question by Anscombe–Fehm in a strong way. Along the way, we construct an existentially decidable field of positive characteristic with an existentially undecidable finite extension, modifying a construction due to Kesavan Thanagopal.

We introduce a homotopy-theoretic interpretation of intuitionistic first-order logic based on ideas from Homotopy Type Theory. We provide a categorical formulation of this interpretation using the framework of Grothendieck fibrations. We then use this formulation to prove the central property of this interpretation, namely homotopy invariance. To do this, we use the result from [8] that any Grothendieck fibration of the kind being considered can automatically be upgraded to a two-dimensional fibration, after which the invariance property is reduced to an abstract theorem concerning pseudonatural transformations of morphisms into two-dimensional fibrations.

As a continuation of ideas initiated in [19], we study bi-colored (generic) expansions of geometric theories in the style of the Fraïssé–Hrushovski construction method. Here we examine that the properties $NTP_{2}$, strongness, $NSOP_{1}$, and simplicity can be transferred to the expansions. As a consequence, while the corresponding bi-colored expansion of a red non-principal ultraproduct of p-adic fields is $NTP_{2}$, the expansion of algebraically closed fields with generic automorphism is a simple theory. Furthermore, these theories are strong with $\operatorname {\mathrm {bdn}}(\text {"}x=x\text {"})=(\aleph _0)_{-}$.

We consider equational theories based on axioms for recursively defining functions, with rules for equality and substitution, but no form of induction—we denote such equational theories as PETS for pure equational theories with substitution. An example is Cook’s system PV without its rule for induction. We show that the Bounded Arithmetic theory $\mathrm {S}^{1}_2$ proves the consistency of PETS. Our approach employs model-theoretic constructions for PETS based on approximate values resembling notions from domain theory in Bounded Arithmetic, which may be of independent interest.

Wilkie proved in 1977 that every countable model ${\mathcal M}$ of Peano Arithmetic has an elementary end extension ${\mathcal N}$ such that the interstructure lattice $\operatorname {\mathrm {Lt}}({\mathcal N} / {\mathcal M})$ is the pentagon lattice ${\mathbf N}_5$. This theorem implies that every countable nonstandard ${\mathcal M}$ has an elementary cofinal extension ${\mathcal N}$ such that $\operatorname {\mathrm {Lt}}({\mathcal N} / {\mathcal M}) \cong {\mathbf N}_5$. It is proved here that whenever ${\mathcal M} \prec {\mathcal N} \models \mathsf {PA}$ and $\operatorname {\mathrm {Lt}}({\mathcal N} / {\mathcal M}) \cong {\mathbf N}_5$, then ${\mathcal N}$ must be either an end or a cofinal extension of ${\mathcal M}$. In contrast, there are ${\mathcal M}^* \prec {\mathcal N}^* \models \mathsf {PA}^*$ such that $\operatorname {\mathrm {Lt}}({\mathcal N}^* / {\mathcal M}^*) \cong {\mathbf N}_5$ and ${\mathcal N}^*$ is neither an end nor a cofinal extension of ${\mathcal M}^*$.

A theory T is tight if different deductively closed extensions of T (in the same language) cannot be bi-interpretable. Many well-studied foundational theories are tight, including $\mathsf {PA}$ [39], $\mathsf {ZF}$, $\mathsf {Z}_2$, and $\mathsf {KM}$ [6]. In this article we extend Enayat’s investigations to subsystems of these latter two theories. We prove that restricting the Comprehension schema of $\mathsf {Z}_2$ and $\mathsf {KM}$ gives non-tight theories. Specifically, we show that $\mathsf {GB}$ and $\mathsf {ACA}_0$ each admit different bi-interpretable extensions, and the same holds for their extensions by adding $\Sigma ^1_k$-Comprehension, for $k \ge 1$. These results provide evidence that tightness characterizes $\mathsf {Z}_2$ and $\mathsf {KM}$ in a minimal way.

Assume $G\prec H$ are groups and ${\cal A}\subseteq {\cal P}(G),\ {\cal B}\subseteq {\cal P}(H)$ are algebras of sets closed under left group translation. Under some additional assumptions we find algebraic connections between the Ellis [semi]groups of the G-flow $S({\cal A})$ and the H-flow $S({\cal B})$. We apply these results in the model theoretic context. Namely, assume G is a group definable in a model M and $M\prec ^* N$. Using weak heirs and weak coheirs we point out some algebraic connections between the Ellis semigroups $S_{ext,G}(M)$ and $S_{ext,G}(N)$. Assuming every minimal left ideal in $S_{ext,G}(N)$ is a group we prove that the Ellis groups of $S_{ext,G}(M)$ are isomorphic to closed subgroups of the Ellis groups of $S_{ext,G}(N)$.

On relational structures and on polymodal logics, we describe operations which preserve local tabularity. This provides new sufficient semantic and axiomatic conditions for local tabularity of a modal logic. The main results are the following.

We show that local tabularity does not depend on reflexivity. Namely, given a class $\mathcal {F}$ of frames, consider the class $\mathcal {F}^{\mathrm {r}}$ of frames, where the reflexive closure operation was applied to each relation in every frame in $\mathcal {F}$. We show that if the logic of $\mathcal {F}^{\mathrm {r}}$ is locally tabular, then the logic of $\mathcal {F}$ is locally tabular as well.

Then we consider the operation of sum on Kripke frames, where a family of frames-summands is indexed by elements of another frame. We show that if both the logic of indices and the logic of summands are locally tabular, then the logic of corresponding sums is also locally tabular.

Finally, using the previous theorem, we describe an operation on logics that preserves local tabularity: we provide a set of formulas such that the extension of the fusion of two canonical locally tabular logics with these formulas is locally tabular.

We propose a reformulation of the ideal $\mathcal {N}$ of Lebesgue measure zero sets of reals modulo an ideal J on $\omega $, which we denote by $\mathcal {N}_J$. In the same way, we reformulate the ideal $\mathcal {E}$ generated by $F_\sigma $ measure zero sets of reals modulo J, which we denote by $\mathcal {N}^*_J$. We show that these are $\sigma $-ideals and that $\mathcal {N}_J=\mathcal {N}$ iff J has the Baire property, which in turn is equivalent to $\mathcal {N}^*_J=\mathcal {E}$. Moreover, we prove that $\mathcal {N}_J$ does not contain co-meager sets and $\mathcal {N}^*_J$ contains non-meager sets when J does not have the Baire property. We also prove a deep connection between these ideals modulo J and the notion of nearly coherence of filters (or ideals).

We also study the cardinal characteristics associated with $\mathcal {N}_J$ and $\mathcal {N}^*_J$. We show their position with respect to Cichoń’s diagram and prove consistency results in connection with other very classical cardinal characteristics of the continuum, leaving just very few open questions. To achieve this, we discovered a new characterization of $\mathrm {add}(\mathcal {N})$ and $\mathrm {cof}(\mathcal {N})$. We also show that, in Cohen model, we can obtain many different values to the cardinal characteristics associated with our new ideals.
