We give a formula for the character of the representation of the symmetric group Sn on each isotypic component of the cohomology of the set of regular elements of a maximal torus of SLn, with respect to the action of the centre.

We provide a short, intuitive proof of Isbell’s zigzag theorem.

If P is a closed 3-manifold the covering space associated to a finitely presentable subgroup ν of infinite index in π1(P) is finitely dominated if and only if P is aspherical or . There is a corresponding result in dimension 4, under further hypotheses on π and ν. In particular, if M is a closed 4-manifold, ν is an ascendant, FP3, finitely-ended subgroup of infinite index in π1(M), π is virtually torsion free and the associated covering space is finitely dominated then either M is aspherical or or S3. In the aspherical case such an ascendant subgroup is usually Z, a surface group or a PD3-group.

It is well known that higher-order linear elliptic equations with measurable coefficients and higher-order nonlinear elliptic equations with analytic coefficients can admit unbounded solutions, unlike their second-order counterparts. In this work we introduce the concept of approximate truncates for functions in higher-order Sobolev spaces and prove that if a solution of a higher-order linear elliptic equation has an approximate truncate somewhere then it is bounded there.

We study the boundedness for multilinear fractional integrals on spaces as Morrey spaces and Lipschitz spaces.

We develop the transversal harmonic theory for a transversally symplectic flow on a manifold and establish the transversal hard Lefschetz theorem. Our main results extend the cases for a contact manifold (H. Kitahara and H. K. Pak, ‘A note on harmonic forms on a compact manifold’, Kyungpook Math. J.43 (2003), 1–10) and for an almost cosymplectic manifold (R. Ibanez, ‘Harmonic cohomology classes of almost cosymplectic manifolds’, Michigan Math. J.44 (1997), 183–199). For the point foliation these are the results obtained by Brylinski (‘A differential complex for Poisson manifold’, J. Differential Geom.28 (1988), 93–114), Haller (‘Harmonic cohomology of symplectic manifolds’, Adv. Math.180 (2003), 87–103), Mathieu (‘Harmonic cohomology classes of symplectic manifolds’, Comment. Math. Helv.70 (1995), 1–9) and Yan (‘Hodge structure on symplectic manifolds’, Adv. Math.120 (1996), 143–154).

In this note we show that the crucial orientation condition forcommutative geometries fails for the natural commutative spectral triple of an orbifold M/G.

Let A be a C*-algebra, and let X be a Banach A-bimodule. Johnson [B. E. Johnson, ‘Local derivations on C*-algebras are derivations’, Trans. Amer. Math. Soc. 353 (2000), 313–325] showed that local derivations from A into X are derivations. We extend this concept of locality to the higher cohomology of a C*-algebra and show that, for every , bounded local n-cocycles from A(n) into X are n-cocycles.

This paper deals with 3-forms on six-dimensional manifolds, the first dimension where the classification of 3-forms is not trivial. It includes three classes of multisymplectic 3-forms. We study the class which is closely related to almost complex structures.

We prove that under a sharp growth condition meromorphic functions posses a direction such that at most four rational functions are completely ramified in any sector containing the direction.

Let (M,g) be a non-compact and complete Riemannian manifold with minimal horospheres and infinite injectivity radius. In this paper we prove that bounded functions on (M,g) satisfying the mean-value property are constant. We thus extend a result of Ranjan and Shah [‘Harmonic manifolds with minimal horospheres’, J. Geom. Anal.12(4) (2002), 683–694] where they proved a similar result for bounded harmonic functions on harmonic manifolds with minimal horospheres.

We give a necessary condition for a two-bridge knot or link S(p,q) to be 2-adjacent to another two-bridge knot or link S(r,s). In particular, we show that if the trivial knot or link is 2-adjacent to S(p,q), then S(p,q) is trivial, that if S(p,q) is 2-adjacent to its mirror image, then S(p,q) is amphicheiral, and that for a prime integer p, if S(p,q) is 2-adjacent to S(r,s), then S(p,q)=S(r,s) or S(r,s)=S(1,0).

We define, in a slightly unusual way, the rank of a partially ordered set. Then we prove that if X is a topological space and satisfies condition (F) and, for every x∈X, is of the form , where is Noetherian of finite rank, and every other is a chain (with respect to inclusion) of neighbourhoods of x, then X is metacompact. We also obtain a cardinal extension of the above. In addition, we give a new proof of the theorem ‘if the space X has a base of point-finite rank, then X is metacompact’, which was proved by Gruenhage and Nyikos.
