We make a correction to an important result by Cline [D. B. H. Cline, ‘Convolutions of distributions with exponential tails’, J. Austral. Math. Soc. (Series A)43 (1987), 347–365; D. B. H. Cline, ‘Convolutions of distributions with exponential tails: corrigendum’, J. Austral. Math. Soc. (Series A)48 (1990), 152–153] on the closure of the exponential class under convolution power mixtures (random summation).

We prove optimal radially weighted L2-norm inequalities for the Fourier extension operator associated to the unit sphere in ℝn. Such inequalities valid at all scales are well understood. The purpose of this short paper is to establish certain more delicate single-scale versions of these.

A proper ideal I of a ring R is said to be strongly irreducible if for each pair of ideals A and B of R, implies that either or . In this paper we study strongly irreducible ideals in different rings. The relations between strongly irreducible ideals of a ring and strongly irreducible ideals of localizations of the ring are also studied. Furthermore, a topology similar to the Zariski topology related to strongly irreducible ideals is introduced. This topology has the Zariski topology defined by prime ideals as one of its subspace topologies.

We consider differences of composition operators between given weighted Banach spaces or Hv0 of analytic functions with weighted sup-norms and give estimates for the distance of these differences to the space of compact operators. We also study boundedness and compactness of the operators. Some examples illustrate our results.

The energy of a unit vector field X on a closed Riemannian manifold M is defined as the energy of the section into T1M determined by X. For odd-dimensional spheres, the energy functional has an infimum for each dimension 2k+1 which is not attained by any non-singular vector field for k>1. For k=1, Hopf vector fields are the unique minima. In this paper we show that for any closed Riemannian manifold, the energy of a frame defined on the manifold, possibly except on a finite subset, admits a lower bound in terms of the total scalar curvature of the manifold. In particular, for odd-dimensional spheres this lower bound is attained by a family of frames defined on the sphere minus one point and consisting of vector fields parallel along geodesics.

We prove an observation associated with η3(τ)η3(7τ) which is found on page 54 of Ramanujan’s Lost Notebook (S. Ramanujan, The Lost Notebook and Other Unpublished Papers (Narosa, New Delhi, 1988)). We then study functions of the type η3(aτ)η3(bτ) with a+b=8.

Let Ω(y′) be an H1(Sn−1) function on the unit sphere satisfying a certain cancellation condition. We study the Lp boundedness of the singular integral operator where α≥n and ρ is a norm function which is homogeneous with respect to certain nonistropic dilation. The result in the paper substantially improves and extends some known results.

Let be a higher rank Exel–Laca algebra generated by an alphabet . If contains d commuting isometries corresponding to rank d and the transition matrices do not have finite rows, then is trivial and is isomorphic to K0 of the abelian subalgebra of generated by the source projections of .

For a numerical semigroup S, a positive integer a and a nonzero element m of S, we define a new numerical semigroup R(S,a,m) and call it the (a,m)-rotation of S. In this paper we study the Frobenius number and the singularity degree of R(S,a,m). Moreover, we observe that the rotations of ℕ are precisely the modular numerical semigroups.

Let , let G and H be locally compact groups and let ω be a continuous homomorphism of G into H. We prove, if G is amenable, the existence of a linear contraction of the Banach algebra CVp(G) of the p-convolution operators on G into CVp(H) which extends the usual definition of the image of a bounded measure by ω. We also discuss the uniqueness of this linear contraction onto important subalgebras of CVp(G). Even if G and H are abelian, we obtain new results. Let Gd denote the group G provided with a discrete topology. As a corollary, we obtain, for every discrete measure, , for Gd amenable. For arbitrary G, we also obtain . These inequalities were already known for p=2 . The proofs presented in this paper avoid the use of the Hilbertian techniques which are not applicable to . Finally, for Gd amenable, we construct a natural map of CVp (G) into CVp (Gd) .

It is known that, for semigroups, the property of admitting a finite presentation is preserved on passing to subsemigroups and extensions of finite Rees index. The present paper shows that the same holds true for Malcev, cancellative, left-cancellative and right-cancellative presentations. (A Malcev (respectively, cancellative, left-cancellative, right-cancellative) presentation is a presentation of a special type that can be used to define any group-embeddable (respectively, cancellative, left-cancellative, right-cancellative) semigroup.)

We define potential operators on hyperplanes and give sharp mixed norm inequalities for them. One of the operators coincides with the Radon transform for which mixed norm estimates are known but in reverse order. Those inequalities will be crucial in our proofs.

We discuss ℓp-maximal regularity of power-bounded operators and relate the discrete to the continuous time problem for analytic semigroups. We give a complete characterization of operators with ℓ1 and -maximal regularity. We also introduce an unconditional form of Ritt’s condition for power-bounded operators, which plays the role of the existence of an -calculus, and give a complete characterization of this condition in the case of Banach spaces which are L1-spaces, C(K)-spaces or Hilbert spaces.

In this article we consider Re-nnd solutions of the equation AXB=C with respect to X, where A,B,C are given matrices. We give necessary and sufficient conditions for the existence of Re-nnd solutions and present a general form of such solutions. As a special case when A=I we obtain the results from a paper of Groß (‘Explicit solutions to the matrix inverse problem AX=B’, Linear Algebra Appl.289 (1999), 131–134).

T. A. Gillespie showed that on a Hilbert space the sum of a well-bounded operator and a commuting real scalar-type spectral operator is well-bounded. A longstanding question asked whether this might still hold true for operators on Lp spaces for . We show here that this conjecture is false. Indeed for a large class of reflexive spaces, the above property characterizes Hilbert space.

Let M be a forward-shift-invariant subspace and N a backward-shift-invariant subspace in the Hardy space H2 on the bidisc. We assume that . Using the wandering subspace of M and N, we study the relations between M and N. Moreover we study M and N using several natural operators defined by shift operators on H2.

In the dual object of an infinite compact, connected group, every infinite Sidon set contains an infinite subset on which full interpolation can be performed using very small classes of measures (discrete measures on arbitrarily small sets or nonnegative discrete measures). In particular, the Figà-Talamanca–Rider subset of an infinite product of compact, connected, simple Lie groups has these kinds of interpolation. This substantially improves previous interpolation results.

We give a simplified proof of the complex inversion formula for semigroups and, more generally, solution families for scalar-type Volterra equations, including the stronger versions on unconditional martingale differences (UMD) spaces. Our approach is based on (elementary) Fourier analysis.
