A subgroup H of a finite G is said to be c-normal in G if there exists a normal subgroup N of G such that G = HN with H ∩ N ≤ HG = CoreG(H). We are interested in studying the influence of the c–normality of certain subgroups of prime power order on the structure of finite groups.

In this paper we describe the groups admitting a covering with Hall subgroups. We also determine the groups with a π1-Hall subgroup, where π1 is the connected component of the prime graph, containing the prime 2.

A two-bridge knot (or link) can be characterized by the so-called Schubert normal form Kp, q where p and q are positive coprime integers. Associated to Kp, q there are the Conway polynomial ▽kp, q(z) and the normalized Alexander polynomial Δkp, q(t). However, it has been open problem how ▽kp, q(z) and Δkp, q(t) are expressed in terms of p and q. In this note, we will give explicit formulae for the Conway polynomials and the normalized Alexander polynomials in the case of two-bridge knots and links. This is done using elementary number theoretical functions in p and q.

We characterize least-perimeter enclosures of prescribed area on some piecewise smooth manifolds, including certain polyhedra, double spherical caps, and cylindrical cans.

In this paper, we prove that for a transcendental meromorphic function f(z) on the complex plane, the inequality T(r, f) < 6N (r, 1/(f2 f(k)−1)) + S(r, f) holds, where k is a positive integer. Moreover, we prove the following normality criterion: Let ℱ be a family of meromorphic functions on a domain D and let k be a positive integer. If for each ℱ ∈ ℱ, all zeros of ℱ are of multiplicity at least k, and f2 f(k) ≠ 1 for z ∈ D, then ℱ is normal in the domain D. At the same time we also show that the condition on multiple zeros of f in the normality criterion is necessary.

We extend the normal surface Q-theory to non-compact 3-manifolds with respect to ideal triangulations. An ideal triangulation of a 3-manifold often has a small number of tetrahedra resulting in a system of Q-matching equations with a small number of variables. A unique feature of our approach is that a compact surface F with boundary properly embedded in a non-compact 3-manifold M with an ideal triangulation with torus cusps can be represented by a normal surface in M as follows. A half-open annulus made up of an infinite number of triangular disks is attached to each boundary component of F. The resulting surface , when normalized, will contain only a finite number of Q-disks and thus correspond to an admissible solution to the system of Q-matching equations. The correspondence is bijective.

We develop a notion of a *-product on a general abelian group, establish a Weyl calculus for operators on the group and connect these with the representation theory of an associated Heisenberg group. This can all be viewed as a generalization of the familiar theory for R. A symplectic group is introduced and a connection with the classical Cayley transform is established. Our main application is to finite groups, where consideration of the symbol calculus for the cyclic groups provides an interesting alternative to the usual matrix form for linear transformations. This leads to a new basis for sl(n) and a decomposition of this Lie algebra into a sum of C*artan subalgebras.

We introduce sign-preserving charges on the system of all orthogonally closed subspaces, F(S), of an inner product space S, and we show that it is always bounded on all the finite-dimensional subspaces whenever dim S = ∞. When S is finite-dimensional this is not true. This fact is used for a new completeness criterion showing that S is complete whenever F(S) admits at least one non-zero sign-preserving regular charge. In particular, every such charge is always completely additive.

In this note we characterize the abelian groups G which have two different proper subgroups N and M such that the subgroup lattice L(G)=[0, M]∪ [N, G] is the union of these intervals.

Some new random coincidence point and random fixed point theorems for multivalued mappings in separable complete metric spaces are proved. The results presented in this paper are the stochastic versions of corresponding results of Chang and Peng and extend the result of the author.

In 1959 Hayman proved an inequality from which it follows that if f is transcendental and meromorphic in the plane then either f takes every finite complex value infinitely often or each derivative f(k), k ≥1, takes every finite non-zero value infinitely often. We investigate the extent to which these values may be ramified, and we establish a generalization of Hayman's inequality in which multiplicities are not taken into account.

In this paper we derive precise tail-area approximations for the sum of an arbitrary finite number of independent heavy-tailed random variables. In order to achieve second-order asymptotics, a mild regularity condition is imposed on the class of distribution functions with regularly varying tails.

Higher-order asymptotics are also obtained when considering asemiparametric subclass of distribution functions with regularly varying tails. These semiparametric subclasses are shown to be closed under convolutions and a convolution algebra is constructed to evaluate the parameters of a convolution from the parameters of the constituent distributions in the convolution. A Maple code is presented which does this task.

In this article we study some special problems of the additive number theory connected with an estimate of cardinality of a sum of two sets, which can be convex as well as non-convex sequences.

Inspired by a statement of W. Luh asserting the existence of entire functions having together with all their derivatives and antiderivatives some kind of additive universality or multiplicative universality on certain compact subsets of the complex plane or of, respectively, the punctured complex plane, we introduce in this paper the new concept of U-operators, which are defined on the space of entire functions. Concrete examples, including differential and antidifferential operators, composition, multiplication and shift operators, are studied. A result due to Luh, Martirosian and Müller about the existence of universal entire functions with gap power series is also strengthened.

A geometric mass concerning supersingular abelian varieties with real multiplications is formulated and related to an arithmetic mass. We determine the exact geometric mass formula for superspecial abelian varieties of Hubert-Blumenthal type. As an application, we compute the number of the irreducible components of the supersingular locus of some Hubert-Blumenthal varieties in terms of special values of the zeta function.

In this paper we continue our previous studies and derive all possible expressions for a meromorphic function and its differential polunomials when they share two finite distinct values a1, a2, CM (counting multiplicities) in majority.

This paper gives a characterisation of finite supersoluble groups of Wielandt length two of order coprime to six.

In this paper, we generalize the Kučera's group-determinant formulae to obtain the real and relative class number formulae of any subfield of cyclotomic function fields with arbitrary conductor in the form of a product of determinants. From these formulae, we generalize the relative class number formula of Rosen and Bae-Kang and obtain analogous results of Tsumura and Hirabayashi for an intermediate field in the tower of cyclotomic function fields with prime power conductor.

The Archimedean components of triangular norms (which turn the closed unit interval into anabelian, totally ordered semigroup with neutral element 1) are studied, in particular their extension to triangular norms, and some construction methods for Archimedean components are given. The triangular norms which are uniquely determined by their Archimedean components are characterized. Using ordinal sums and additive generators, new types of left-continuous triangular norms are constructed.

Let L be a finite-dimensional Lie algebra over the field F. The Ado-Iwasawa Theorem asserts the existence of a finite-dimensional L-module which gives a faithful representation ρ of L. Let S be a subnormal subalgebra of L, let be a saturated formation of soluble Lie algebras and suppose that S ∈ . I show that there exists a module V with the extra property that it is -hypercentral as S-module. Further, there exists a module V which has this extra property simultaneously for every such S and , along with the Hochschild extra that ρ(x) is nilpotent for every x ∈ L with ad(x) nilpotent. In particular, if L is supersoluble, then it has a faithful representation by upper triangular matrices.
