Soft tissue δ13C values were determined in vestimentiferan tube worms, alvinellid polychaetes and molluscs from Axial Seamount and Middle Valley, North-east Pacific. Inorganic carbon in mollusc shells and water samples was also analysed. In the vestimentiferan, Ridgeia piscesae, which lives in symbiosis with sulphur-oxidizing chemolithoautotrophic bacteria, tissue samples from the Axial vents showed δ13C values from −11 to −16‰, whereas at Middle Valley, where venting occurs through sediments, the δ13C ranged from −16 to −26‰. The tissues of an associated polychaete, Paralvinella palmiformis, which feeds on free-living bacteria, had δ13C values in the range −21 to −26‰. The bivalve Calyptogena from Middle Valley was more depleted than Ridgeia and Paralvinella, −37‰, closer to the ratios found in chemolithoautotrophic symbioses in non-vent habitats. Considerable, but variable, depletion (−23 to −42‰) was found in small gastropods. Mollusc shells and diluted vent water differed little in δ13C compared to inorganic carbon in ambient deep sea-water.

The Raman spectrum of a cell homogenate obtained from the unfractioned blood cells of Ascidia gemmata was recorded in an effort to determine the ratio of the level of sulphate to that of vanadium in the blood cells. The ratio obtained was 1·47, which is close to 1·5, the value predicted if sulphate ions are present as the counter ions of V3+ ions. We found evidence that an aliphatic sulphonic acid is present in the blood cells, namely, the Raman spectrum of the cell homogenate included a band at 1044 cm−1, which corresponds to the symmetrical stretching vibration of the SO3− group of the anion of cysteic acid.

Light and electron microscopical studies were carried out in order to characterize the blood cells of the bivalve mollusc, Scapharca inaequivalvis (Bruguière). Cytochemical techniques were also used to investigate peroxidase, phenol oxidase and lysosomal enzyme activity in the cells. Four types of blood cell were found: the more numerous erythrocytes and three populations of white blood cells. The red blood cells were found to be nucleated and contained dense cytoplasmic granules and various organelles; a well-developed Golgi apparatus, rough endoplasmic reticulum, variable numbers of mitochondria and fine cytoplasmic microtubules were observed. The white blood cells were generally smaller and less frequent. The type 1 cells possessed variable numbers of acidophilic, cytoplasmic granules and showed a high degree of vacuolation. The highly granular cells showed more extensive pseudopodia, perhaps indicative of intense phagocytic activity. The type 2 cells were basophilic and possessed few or no cytoplasmic granules. The type 3 cells were infrequently seen; they were relatively large and packed with large, dense, acidophilic, membrane-bound granules. Peroxidase and arylsulphatase activity was found to be present in the type 1 and 2 white blood cells and in the cytoplasmic granules of the erythrocytes. No phenol oxidase activity was detected.

The respiration rates of five genera of benthic Foraminifera were determined by Cartesian diver microrespirometry. Across all genera studied, the rate averaged 11·3×10−3 μl O2 individual−1 h−1 at 10°C. Estimates of foraminiferal mean biovolumes ranged from 0·66 to 6·54×106μm3, giving an overall mean volume-specific respiration rate of 7·36 × 10−9 μl O2 h−1 μm−3. For non-symbiont-bearing Foraminifera, in general, volume-specific rates (log μl O2 h−1 μm3) are best described by the equation, −0·98 × (log cell biovolume, μm3)−2·01. The respiration results show that these benthic Foraminifera respire some ten times more rapidly than naked amoebae of equivalent size. The combination of high respiratory rates and the often large standing stocks of Foraminifera encountered, suggests that these organisms may contribute significantly to total microbial benthic respiration.

The common sandhopper of European shores, Talitrus saltator (Montagu, 1808) (Crustacea: Amphipoda) remains inactive in high shore burrows for much of the winter in more northern latitudes. In the laboratory exposure to low temperature (2 or 3°C) was accompanied by the onset of inactivity, a precipitous decrease in oxygen uptake and a marked increase in the concentrations of the major ions in the haemolymph. The increase in the concentration of Mg2+ in the haemolymph was particularly pronounced. The possibility that Mg2+ ions are implicated in bringing about a reduction in activity and oxygen uptake is discussed.

Studies of mysid diets by gut contents analysis have generally revealed a broadly omnivorous feeding habit, but there are also tendencies towards carnivory, herbivory and/or detritivory (e.g. Nath & Pillai, 1973; Siegfried & Kopache, 1980; Mauchline, 1980; Zagursky & Feller, 1985; Wooldridge & Bailey, 1982; Webb & Wooldridge, 1989). Examination of feeding structures is also necessary to support inferences about feeding ecology (e.g. Webb & Wooldridge, 1989). However, there have been few studies relating to the functional morphology of mysid foreguts (Gelderd, 1909; Haffer, 1965; Nath & Pillai, 1973; Mauchline, 1980; Friesen et al., 1986; Webb & Wooldridge, 1989; Storch, 1989). With the exception of the latter two studies, qualitative descriptions and characterization of the different internal foregut structures have been primarily based on light microscopy. These studies may misinterpret the internal arrangement, topography, and three-dimensional orientation of the internal armature of the foregut, mainly due to problems with depth of field (Grice & Lawson, 1971). Oshel & Steele (1988), from SEM observations, briefly described some foregut features of Gnathophausia ingens. In a comparative study, Storch (1989), using the techniques of transmission and scanning electron microscopy, described in detail the different food chambers and channels, cuticular ridges, and ultrastructure of the epithelial and cuticular linings of the mysid foregut. Webb & Wooldridge (1989) noted the strong relationship between mouthparts, foregut morphology, and the feeding habits of two co-occurring mysids.

Snapper Pagrus auratus (Bloch & Schneider) (Pisces: Sparidae) larvae are visual feeders which initiate exogenous feeding four days after hatching. Visual acuity of cultured snapper larvae was determined morphologically from cone spacing within the retina, and improved from 2°10’ minimum separable angle (MSA) in a 4-d-old larva (3·2 mm SL) to 52’ in a fish 22 d old (5·8 mm SL). Visual acuity determined behaviourally using the optokinetic response, was poorer at the time of first feeding than acuity determined morphologically. Behaviourally determined acuity improved with growth from 38° in 4-d-old fish (mean SL 3·1 mm) to 8°8’ at 16 d of age (mean SL 4·9 mm). This was still lower than the theoretical estimate of acuity (55’ at 18 d old, 5·9 mm SL). An estimate of the Matthiessen ratio based upon histological measurements suggests that the larval eye is initially strongly myopic and grows into focus. Development of the lens accommodative system was first apparent in fish at 4 d of age as a pigmented outgrowth of the ventral iris. A retractor lentis muscle was present in 7-d-old larvae (3·5 mm SL) and suspensory ligaments were present in 10-d-old fish (3·6 mm SL). As a consequence, larval snapper were initially incapable of accommodative lens movements to correct for a refractive error. The maximum internal jaw dimensions, an estimate of maximum ingestible prey size, ranged from 152 μn at first feeding to 373 μm in a 22 d old larva. Reactive distance to prey based on MSA determined from the optokinetic response and maximum prey width, were small in first-feeding fish (0·2 mm for prey width of 150 μm), but increased linearly with both body size and prey width. Minimum separable angles of first-feeding snapper deter-mined optokinetically, were larger (lower acuity) than the visual angles determined from feeding events of first-feeding fish larvae reported elsewhere. This may reflect the fact that optokinetic experiments involve a single sensory modality and chemical sense and developing lateral line may contribute to visually oriented feeding.

Since the introduction of the Manila clam Ruditapes philippinarum (Mollusca: Bivalvia) to aquaculture clam beds, this species has spread to several sites. As a result, an extensive fishery has developed around this species. Its reproductive cycle and that of a native clam species, Ruditapes decussatus (Mollusca: Bivalvia) from two Brittany sites are examined here and the seasonal variations in the condition index, the scale of maturation stages, the histology and the oocyte size-frequencies of both species are compared. The differences observed between the species and between sites were attributed to environmental conditions. Ruditapes philippinarum showed a more extended breeding period and a greater number of spawning events than R. decussatus. In the Morbihan Gulf, the reproductive activity of R. philippinarum appeared particularly great in terms of number of spawning events, and speed of maturation. For both species, synchronism was more apparent during the first maturation, while spawning, and particularly partial spawning, tended to decrease the level of synchronization.

During a study based on catches taken in the northern North Sea by selected Scottish fishing boats during 1985–1992, large numbers of the normally rare short-fin squid, Todaropsis eblanae (Cephalopoda: Ommastrephidae), were recorded in 1987 and 1990. Our findings, supported by data obtained from plankton/young fish surveys in 1988 and 1989, suggest that in northern waters Todaropsis eblanae generally mates and spawns during late summer and early autumn (June-November). Successful hatching events appear to occur during October-March, producing juvenile (stage I) squid in the early part of the year (January-June). Estimations of maximum male reproductive output and female fecundity were up to 130 spermatophores and ~28,000 eggs per individual, respectively.

The gross morphology, histology, ultrastructure and periodicity of gonad development of the bathyal aspidochirote holothurian Bathyplotes natans is described and compared with the ‘tubule recruitment model’ proposed for aspidochirote holothurians. As B. natans grows, additional gonad tubules develop at the anterior end of the gonad basis. Oocyte development in these tubules is non-seasonal and the population of oocytes consists of both pre-vitellogenic and vitellogenic oocytes as well as some large oocytes undergoing phagocytic breakdown. Vitellogenesis is similar to that described previously for holothurians, although the follicular inner epithelium cells surrounding the developing oocytes are different from those previously reported. In males the unique acrosomal complex consists of three depressions with the acrosome lying in the central depression. The tubule recruitment model of Smiley does not apply to B. natans. We do not feel this model has widespread applicability in the Aspidochirotida or the Holothurioidea in general.

The distribution of Ampelisca aequicornis Bruzelius is said to extend from Norway southwards to the Gulf of Guinea (Dauvin & Bellan-Santini, 1988) and it has been recorded from British and Irish waters (Norman, 1900; Metzger, 1875). There do not appear to be any recent records. A number of specimens in The Natural History Museum, London (NHM) collections, labelled Ampelisca aequicornis, were examined by Lincoln (1979) who reported that only Galway Bay material was referable to A. aequicornis or “at least to the aequicornis complex”. This we can confirm from our own study of the NHM material. We have re-examined the Galway Bay specimen referred to by Lincoln (1979) and find it to differ from A. aequicornis in several ways and to be closest to A. dalmatina Karaman, previously known only from the Mediterranean and the Portuguese coast (Marques & Bellan-Santini, 1991, 1993). It also closely resembles A. pusilla Sars and A. ambylops Sars, but those two species lack cuticular eyes. Ampelisca aequicornis is therefore not confirmed to occur in the waters of the British Isles.

Tharyx retierei, a new species of bipalpate Cirratulidae (Polychaeta), has been collected from subtidal depths south of Safi, off the Atlantic coast of Morocco. The species differs from all other known bipalpate cirratulids in possessing aristate and pseudocompound neurosetae in posterior segments. The species is described and figured and its affinities are briefly discussed.

This work presents the description of an intracoelomic parasite of the genus Dendrogaster (Crustacea: Ascothoracida), the largest ever reported, collected for the first time from the starfish Hippasteria phrygiana in the deep waters of the St Lawrence Estuary (eastern Canada). The parasite bears a close resemblance to only one previously described species, D. arbusculus from the west American coast, suggesting a bicoastal and possibly circumpolar distribution. Female growth is concurrent with embryo development and the parasite may have a negative impact on host starfish densities through gonad atrophy. This research also demystifies the old and persistent description of a supposed parasite in H. phrygiana 70 years ago, Laocoön paradoxus, and finally concludes that this parasite never existed and in fact represents the water vascular system found in all starfish.

Complex mesoscale eddy interactions are characteristic of the North Atlantic, resulting in a mosaic of water masses with different physical, chemical and biological properties. Observations of protist assemblages during spring 1989 and 1990 in the vicinity of 47°N 18°W indicate that timing, composition, and further development of the spring bloom community are highly variable between years. During 1989 a microbial community, dominated by small photosynthetic nanoplankton and protist grazers, was observed after the main diatom bloom in the transition zone between two cyclonic eddies. This community was characterized by a high ratio of ‘protozoan’ to ‘phytoplankton’ carbon, and dominance of the microzooplankton by mixotrophic ciliates. A nanodiatom/prymnesiophyte bloom was observed to replace the typical ‘microdiatom’ bloom in a front between a cyclonic and anticyclonic eddy during 1990. After the demise of the diatoms, high standing stocks of nanophytoplankton persisted until early June. In this post-diatom-bloom period, the ‘protozoan’ biomass was lower and the ‘nanophytoplankton’ stocks higher than in 1989. Very high stocks of heterotrophic nanodinoflagellates were observed in 1990. The factors responsible for the development of these quite different microbial food-webs in two consecutive years and the consequences thereof for ecosystem function remain to be more fully explored.

The serendipitous detection of a rare hermaphrodite individual of Mytilus galloprovincialis during the process of spawning in the laboratory enabled self- and cross-fertilization to be achieved. Self-fertilized larvae exhibited significantly higher percentages of morphological abnormality at 3 d, lower survival at 9 d and decreased size at 31 d of age compared with cross-fertilized larvae. These results are discussed in the light of equivocal evidence for inbreeding depression in larvae derived from self-fertilization, full-sib matings and gynogenesis in other bivalves.

A practical method for separating eggs of hake, Merluccius merluccius (Pisces: Merlucciidae), from samples of mixed plankton is described.

The suitability of using intra-peritoneally attached miniature 300 kHz acoustic transmitters to study the behaviour of juvenile bass (Dicentrarchus labrax) between 235 and 370 mm in length was assessed. A laboratory study indicated minimal effects on the subsequent survival and behaviour of juvenile bass. A field study carried out indicated the potential use of the transmitter for telemetry studies on juvenile bass.

The pulsed-Doppler flowmeter permits continuous, non-invasive measurement of blood flow through several arteries simultaneously. Summation of volume flow rates through all arteries leaving the heart allows determination of cardiac output, stroke volume, and the percentage of cardiac output delivered to each region of the body. The use of this system for investigating changes in arterial perfusion as well as its calibration in situ are described.

Intracellular granules have been isolated from the digestive gland of the shore crab Carcinus maenas (L.). These granules are normally shed from this tissue during the digestive cycle and are shown to occur in considerable numbers in the faecal strands. The granules are amorphous to x-ray diffraction and remain in this state in sea-water for several weeks, although they will transform into crystalline apatite in simpler saline solutions. The fate of these deposits in the marine environment is discussed in relation to their contribution to sediments and phosphorites.

Examination of extracts of tissues of a leatherback turtle, Dermochelys coriacea (L.) (Reptilia: Dermochelyidae) by high-performance liquid chromatography inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry has demonstrated the presence of arsenobetaine, arsenocholine and inorganic arsenate in heart muscle and liver, and arsenobetaine and inorganic arsenate in pectoral muscle. Although arsenobetaine was the major form in all tissues, inorganic arsenate and arsenocholine accounted for 50% and 15% respectively of arsenic in aqueous extracts of the liver.
