The plus and minus norm groups are constructed by Kobayashi as subgroups of the formal group of an elliptic curve with supersingular reduction, and they play an important role in Kobayashi’s definition of the signed Selmer groups. In this paper, we study the cohomology of these plus and minus norm groups. In particular, we show that these plus and minus norm groups are cohomologically trivial. As an application of our analysis, we establish certain (quasi-)projectivity properties of the non-primitive mixed signed Selmer groups of an elliptic curve with good reduction at all primes above p. We then build on these projectivity results to derive a Kida formula for the signed Selmer groups under a slight weakening of the usual µ = 0 assumption, and study the integrality property of the characteristic element attached to the signed Selmer groups.

In finite group theory, chief factors play an important and well-understood role in the structure theory. We here develop a theory of chief factors for Polish groups. In the development of this theory, we prove a version of the Schreier refinement theorem. We also prove a trichotomy for the structure of topologically characteristically simple Polish groups.

The development of the theory of chief factors requires two independently interesting lines of study. First we consider injective, continuous homomorphisms with dense normal image. We show such maps admit a canonical factorisation via a semidirect product, and as a consequence, these maps preserve topological simplicity up to abelian error. We then define two generalisations of direct products and use these to isolate a notion of semisimplicity for Polish groups.

We interpret the degrees which arise in Tevelev’s study of scattering amplitudes in terms of moduli spaces of Hurwitz covers. Via excess intersection theory, the boundary geometry of the Hurwitz moduli space yields a simple recursion for the Tevelev degrees (together with their natural two parameter generalisation). We find exact solutions which specialise to Tevelev’s formula in his cases and connect to the projective geometry of lines and Castelnuovo’s classical count of $g^1_d$ ’s in other cases. For almost all values, the calculation of the two parameter generalisation of the Tevelev degree is new. A related count of refined Dyck paths is solved along the way.

We offer an alternative proof of a result of Conlon, Fox, Sudakov and Zhao [CFSZ20] on solving translation-invariant linear equations in dense Sidon sets. Our proof generalises to equations in more than five variables and yields effective bounds.

We present infinite analogues of our splinter lemma for constructing nested sets of separations. From these we derive several tree-of-tangles-type theorems for infinite graphs and infinite abstract separation systems.

We investigate the behaviour of families of meromorphic functions in the neighbourhood of points of non-normality and prove certain covering properties that complement Montel’s Theorem. In particular, we also obtain characterisations of non-normality in terms of such properties.

In this paper we characterize when non-classical polynomials are necessary in the inverse theorem for the Gowers $U^k$ -norm. We give a brief deduction of the fact that a bounded function on $\mathbb F_p^n$ with large $U^k$ -norm must correlate with a classical polynomial when $k\le p+1$ . To the best of our knowledge, this result is new for $k=p+1$ (when $p>2$ ). We then prove that non-classical polynomials are necessary in the inverse theorem for the Gowers $U^k$ -norm over $\mathbb F_p^n$ for all $k\ge p+2$ , completely characterising when classical polynomials suffice.

In this paper, we study the center Z of the finite W-algebra $${\mathcal{T}}({\mathfrak{g}},e)$$ associated with a semi-simple Lie algebra $$\mathfrak{g}$$ over an algebraically closed field $$\mathbb{k}$$ of characteristic p≫0, and an arbitrarily given nilpotent element $$e \in{\mathfrak{g}} $$ We obtain an analogue of Veldkamp’s theorem on the center. For the maximal spectrum Specm(Z), we show that its Azumaya locus coincides with its smooth locus of smooth points. The former locus reflects irreducible representations of maximal dimension for $${\mathcal{T}}({\mathfrak{g}},e)$$ .

We develop the relationship between quaternionic hyperbolic geometry and arithmetic counting or equidistribution applications, that arises from the action of arithmetic groups on quaternionic hyperbolic spaces, especially in dimension 2. We prove a Mertens counting formula for the rational points over a definite quaternion algebra A over ${\mathbb{Q}}$ in the light cone of quaternionic Hermitian forms, as well as a Neville equidistribution theorem of the set of rational points over A in quaternionic Heisenberg groups.

For any fixed nonzero integer h, we show that a positive proportion of integral binary quartic forms F do locally everywhere represent h, but do not globally represent h. We order classes of integral binary quartic forms by the two generators of their ring of ${\rm GL}_{2}({\mathbb Z})$ -invariants, classically denoted by I and J.

We consider the three-dimensional sloshing problem on a triangular prism whose angles with the sloshing surface are of the form ${\pi}/{2q}$ , where q is an integer. We are interested in finding a two-term asymptotic expansion of the eigenvalue counting function. When both angles are ${\pi}/{4}$ , we compute the exact value of the second term. As for the general case, we conjecture an asymptotic expansion by constructing quasimodes for the problem and computing the counting function of the related quasi-eigenvalues. These quasimodes come from solutions of the sloping beach problem and correspond to two kinds of waves, edge waves and surface waves. We show that the quasi-eigenvalues are exponentially close to real eigenvalues of the sloshing problem. The asymptotic expansion of their counting function is closely related to a lattice counting problem inside a perturbed ellipse where the perturbation is in a sense random. The contribution of the angles can then be detected through that perturbation.

Let f and g be two quasiregular maps in $\mathbb{R}^d$ that are of transcendental type and also satisfy $f\circ g =g \circ f$ . We show that if the fast escaping sets of those functions are contained in their respective Julia sets then those two functions must have the same Julia set. We also obtain the same conclusion about commuting quasimeromorphic functions with infinite backward orbit of infinity. Furthermore we show that permutable quasiregular functions of the form f and $g = \phi \circ f$ , where $\phi$ is a quasiconformal map, have the same Julia sets and that polynomial type quasiregular maps cannot commute with transcendental type ones unless their degree is less than or equal to their dilatation.

Let Y be a smooth complete intersection of three quadrics, and assume the dimension of Y is even. We show that Y has a multiplicative Chow–Künneth decomposition, in the sense of Shen–Vial. As a consequence, the Chow ring of (powers of) Y displays K3-like behaviour. As a by-product of the argument, we also establish a multiplicative Chow–Künneth decomposition for double planes.

We show that a rational function f of degree $>1$ on the projective line over an algebraically closed field that is complete with respect to a non-trivial and non-archimedean absolute value has no potentially good reductions if and only if the Berkovich Julia set of f is uniformly perfect. As an application, a uniform regularity of the boundary of each Berkovich Fatou component of f is also established.

We study the integrability of the conformal geodesic flow (also known as the conformal circle flow) on the SO(3)–invariant gravitational instantons. On a hyper–Kähler four–manifold the conformal geodesic equations reduce to geodesic equations of a charged particle moving in a constant self–dual magnetic field. In the case of the anti–self–dual Taub NUT instanton we integrate these equations completely by separating the Hamilton–Jacobi equations, and finding a commuting set of first integrals. This gives the first example of an integrable conformal geodesic flow on a four–manifold which is not a symmetric space. In the case of the Eguchi–Hanson we find all conformal geodesics which lie on the three–dimensional orbits of the isometry group. In the non–hyper–Kähler case of the Fubini–Study metric on $\mathbb{CP}^2$ we use the first integrals arising from the conformal Killing–Yano tensors to recover the known complete integrability of conformal geodesics.

Given an infinite subset $\mathcal{A} \subseteq\mathbb{N}$ , let A denote its smallest N elements. There is a rich and growing literature on the question of whether for typical $\alpha\in[0,1]$ , the pair correlations of the set $\alpha A (\textrm{mod}\ 1)\subset [0,1]$ are asymptotically Poissonian as N increases. We define an inhomogeneous generalisation of the concept of pair correlation, and we consider the corresponding doubly metric question. Many of the results from the usual setting carry over to this new setting. Moreover, the double metricity allows us to establish some new results whose singly metric analogues are missing from the literature.

We give a new approach to characterising and computing the set of global maximisers and minimisers of the functions in the Takagi class and, in particular, of the Takagi–Landsberg functions. The latter form a family of fractal functions $f_\alpha:[0,1]\to{\mathbb R}$ parameterised by $\alpha\in(-2,2)$ . We show that $f_\alpha$ has a unique maximiser in $[0,1/2]$ if and only if there does not exist a Littlewood polynomial that has $\alpha$ as a certain type of root, called step root. Our general results lead to explicit and closed-form expressions for the maxima of the Takagi–Landsberg functions with $\alpha\in(-2,1/2]\cup(1,2)$ . For $(1/2,1]$ , we show that the step roots are dense in that interval. If $\alpha\in (1/2,1]$ is a step root, then the set of maximisers of $f_\alpha$ is an explicitly given perfect set with Hausdorff dimension $1/(n+1)$ , where n is the degree of the minimal Littlewood polynomial that has $\alpha$ as its step root. In the same way, we determine explicitly the minima of all Takagi–Landsberg functions. As a corollary, we show that the closure of the set of all real roots of all Littlewood polynomials is equal to $[-2,-1/2]\cup[1/2,2]$ .

In this work we generalise the main result of [1] to the family of hyperelliptic curves with potentially good reduction over a p-adic field which have genus $g=({p-1})/{2}$ and the largest possible image of inertia under the $\ell$ -adic Galois representation associated to its Jacobian. We will prove that this Galois representation factors as the tensor product of an unramified character and an irreducible representation of a finite group, which can be either equal to the inertia image (in which case the representation is easily determined) or a $C_2$ -extension of it. In this second case, there are two suitable representations and we will describe the Galois action explicitly in order to determine the correct one.

It was observed recently in work of Bez, Buschenhenke, Cowling, Flock and the first author, that the euclidean Brascamp–Lieb inequality satisfies a natural and useful Fourier duality property. The purpose of this paper is to establish an appropriate discrete analogue of this. Our main result identifies the Brascamp–Lieb constants on (finitely-generated) discrete abelian groups with Brascamp–Lieb constants on their (Pontryagin) duals. As will become apparent, the natural setting for this duality principle is that of locally compact abelian groups, and this raises basic questions about Brascamp–Lieb constants formulated in this generality.
