We prove several different anti-concentration inequalities for functions of independent Bernoulli-distributed random variables. First, motivated by a conjecture of Alon, Hefetz, Krivelevich and Tyomkyn, we prove some “Poisson-type” anti-concentration theorems that give bounds of the form 1/e + o(1) for the point probabilities of certain polynomials. Second, we prove an anti-concentration inequality for polynomials with nonnegative coefficients which extends the classical Erdős–Littlewood–Offord theorem and improves a theorem of Meka, Nguyen and Vu for polynomials of this type. As an application, we prove some new anti-concentration bounds for subgraph counts in random graphs.

We prove that if $f:\mathbb{B}^n \to \mathbb{B}^n$ , for n ≥ 2, is a homeomorphism with bounded skew over all equilateral hyperbolic triangles, then f is in fact quasiconformal. Conversely, we show that if $f:\mathbb{B}^n \to \mathbb{B}^n$ is quasiconformal then f is η-quasisymmetric in the hyperbolic metric, where η depends only on n and K. We obtain the same result for hyperbolic n-manifolds. Analogous results in $\mathbb{R}^n$ , and metric spaces that behave like $\mathbb{R}^n$ , are known, but as far as we are aware, these are the first such results in the hyperbolic setting, which is the natural metric to use on $\mathbb{B}^n$ .

We show that a monotone Lagrangian L in ${\mathbb{C}}{\mathbb{P}}^n$ of minimal Maslov number n + 1 is homeomorphic to a double quotient of a sphere, and thus homotopy equivalent to ${\mathbb{R}}{\mathbb{P}}^n$. To prove this we use Zapolsky’s canonical pearl complex for L over ${\mathbb{Z}}$, and twisted versions thereof, where the twisting is determined by connected covers of L. The main tool is the action of the quantum cohomology of ${\mathbb{C}}{\mathbb{P}}^n$ on the resulting Floer homologies.

Cluster categories and cluster algebras encode two dimensional structures. For instance, the Auslander–Reiten quiver of a cluster category can be drawn on a surface, and there is a class of cluster algebras determined by surfaces with marked points.

Cluster characters are maps from cluster categories (and more general triangulated categories) to cluster algebras. They have a tropical shadow in the form of so-called tropical friezes, which are maps from cluster categories (and more general triangulated categories) to the integers.

This paper will define higher dimensional tropical friezes. One of the motivations is the higher dimensional cluster categories of Oppermann and Thomas, which encode (d + 1)-dimensional structures for an integer d ⩾ 1. They are (d + 2)-angulated categories, which belong to the subject of higher homological algebra.

We will define higher dimensional tropical friezes as maps from higher cluster categories (and more general (d + 2)-angulated categories) to the integers. Following Palu, we will define a notion of (d + 2)-angulated index, establish some of its properties, and use it to construct higher dimensional tropical friezes.

Let d ≥ 3 be a natural number. We show that for all finite, non-empty sets $A \subseteq \mathbb{R}^d$ that are not contained in a translate of a hyperplane, we have

where δ > 0 is an absolute constant only depending on d. This improves upon an earlier result of Freiman, Heppes and Uhrin, and makes progress towards a conjecture of Stanchescu.

We show that Gromov’s monsters arising from i.i.d. random labellings of expanders (that we call random Gromov’s monsters) have linear divergence along a subsequence, so that in particular they do not contain Morse quasigeodesics, and they are not quasi-isometric to Gromov’s monsters arising from graphical small cancellation labellings of expanders.

Moreover, by further studying the divergence function, we show that there are uncountably many quasi-isometry classes of random Gromov’s monsters.

For infinitely many d, Hassett showed that special cubic fourfolds of discriminant d are related to polarised K3 surfaces of degree d via their Hodge structures. For half of the d, each associated K3 surface (S, L) canonically yields another one, (Sτ, Lτ). We prove that Sτ is isomorphic to the moduli space of stable coherent sheaves on S with Mukai vector (3, L, d/6). We also explain for which d the Hilbert schemes Hilbn (S) and Hilbn (Sτ) are birational.

Let E(s, Q) be the Epstein zeta function attached to a positive definite quadratic form of discriminant D < 0, such that h(D) ≥ 2, where h(D) is the class number of the imaginary quadratic field ${\mathbb{Q}} (\sqrt D)$. We denote by ${N_E}({\sigma _1},{\sigma _2},T)$ the number of zeros of $[E(s,Q)$ in the rectangle ${\sigma _1} < {\mathop{\rm Re}\nolimits} (s) \le {\sigma _2}$ and $T \le {\mathop{\rm Im}\nolimits} (s) \le 2T$, where $1/2 < {\sigma _1} < {\sigma _2} < 1$ are fixed real numbers. In this paper, we improve the asymptotic formula of Gonek and Lee for ${N_E}({\sigma _1},{\sigma _2},T)$, obtaining a saving of a power of log T in the error term.

We prove that sets with positive upper Banach density in sufficiently large dimensions contain congruent copies of all sufficiently large dilates of three specific higher-dimensional patterns. These patterns are: 2n vertices of a fixed n-dimensional rectangular box, the same vertices extended with n points completing three-term arithmetic progressions, and the same vertices extended with n points completing three-point corners. Our results provide common generalizations of several Euclidean density theorems from the literature.

Recently, Lutz and Stull used methods from algorithmic information theory to prove two new Marstrand-type projection theorems, concerning subsets of Euclidean space which are not assumed to be Borel, or even analytic. One of the theorems states that if \[K \subset {\mathbb{R}^n}\] is any set with equal Hausdorff and packing dimensions, then

for almost every \[e \in {S^{n - 1}}\]. Here \[{\pi _e}\] stands for orthogonal projection to span (\[e\]). The primary purpose of this paper is to present proofs for Lutz and Stull’s projection theorems which do not refer to information theoretic concepts. Instead, they will rely on combinatorial-geometric arguments, such as discretised versions of Kaufman’s “potential theoretic” method, the pigeonhole principle, and a lemma of Katz and Tao. A secondary purpose is to generalise Lutz and Stull’s theorems: the versions in this paper apply to orthogonal projections to m-planes in \[{\mathbb{R}^n}\], for all \[0 < m < n\].

We prove a theorem describing the limiting fine-scale statistics of orbits of a point in hyperbolic space under the action of a discrete subgroup. Similar results have been proved only in the lattice case with two recent infinite-volume exceptions by Zhang for Apollonian circle packings and certain Schottky groups. Our results hold for general Zariski dense, non-elementary, geometrically finite subgroups in any dimension. Unlike in the lattice case orbits of geometrically finite subgroups do not necessarily equidistribute on the whole boundary of hyperbolic space. But rather they may equidistribute on a fractal subset. Understanding the behavior of these orbits near the boundary is central to Patterson–Sullivan theory and much further work. Our theorem characterises the higher order spatial statistics and thus addresses a very natural question. As a motivating example our work applies to sphere packings (in any dimension) which are invariant under the action of such discrete subgroups. At the end of the paper we show how this statistical characterization can be used to prove convergence of moments and to write down the limiting formula for the two-point correlation function and nearest neighbor distribution. Moreover we establish a formula for the 2 dimensional limiting gap distribution (and cumulative gap distribution) which also applies in the lattice case.

We prove that a Kummer surface defined over a complete strictly Henselian discretely valued field K of residue characteristic different from 2 admits a strict Kulikov model after finite base change. The Kulikov models we construct will be schemes, so our results imply that the semistable reduction conjecture is true for Kummer surfaces in this setup, even in the category of schemes. Our construction of Kulikov models is closely related to an earlier construction of Künnemann, which produces semistable models of Abelian varieties. It is well known that the special fibre of a strict Kulikov model belongs to one of three types, and we shall prove that the type of the special fibre of a strict Kulikov model of a Kummer surface and the toric rank of a corresponding Abelian surface are determined by each other. We also study the relationship between this invariant and the Galois representation on the second ℓ-adic cohomology of the Kummer surface. Finally, we apply our results, together with earlier work of Halle–Nicaise, to give a proof of the monodromy conjecture for Kummer surfaces in equal characteristic zero.

We show that any smooth projective cubic hypersurface of dimension at least 29 over the rationals contains a rational line. A variation of our methods provides a similar result over p-adic fields. In both cases, we improve on previous results due to the second author and Wooley.

We include an appendix in which we highlight some slight modifications to a recent result of Papanikolopoulos and Siksek. It follows that the set of rational points on smooth projective cubic hypersurfaces of dimension at least 29 is generated via secant and tangent constructions from just a single point.

A long standing problem, which has its roots in low-dimensional homotopy theory, is to classify all finite groups G for which the integral group ring ℤG has stably free cancellation (SFC). We extend results of R. G. Swan by giving a condition for SFC and use this to show that ℤG has SFC provided at most one copy of the quaternions ℍ occurs in the Wedderburn decomposition of the real group ring ℝG. This generalises the Eichler condition in the case of integral group rings.

Fundamental group of a manifold gives a deep effect on its underlying smooth structure. In this paper we introduce a new variant of the Donaldson invariant in Yang–Mills gauge theory from twisting by the Picard group of a 4-manifold in the case when the fundamental group is free abelian. We then generalise it to the general case of fundamental groups by use of the framework of non commutative geometry. We also verify that our invariant distinguishes smooth structures between some homeomorphic 4-manifolds.

Eigenfunctions of the Fourier transform with prescribed zeros played a major role in the proof that the E8 and the Leech lattice give the best sphere packings in respective dimensions 8 and 24 by Cohn, Kumar, Miller, Radchenko and Viazovska. The functions used for a linear programming argument were constructed as Laplace transforms of certain modular and quasimodular forms. Similar constructions were used by Cohn and Gonçalves to find a function satisfying an optimal uncertainty principle in dimension 12. This paper gives a unified view on these constructions and develops the machinery to find the underlying forms in all dimensions divisible by 4. Furthermore, the positivity of the Fourier coefficients of the quasimodular forms occurring in this context is discussed.

For a polynomial $f(x)\in\mathbb{Q}[x]$ and rational numbers c, u, we put $f_c(x)\coloneqq f(x)+c$, and consider the Zsigmondy set $\calZ(f_c,u)$ associated to the sequence $\{f_c^n(u)-u\}_{n\geq 1}$, see Definition 1.1, where $f_c^n$ is the n-st iteration of fc. In this paper, we prove that if u is a rational critical point of f, then there exists an Mf > 0 such that $\mathbf M_f\geq \max_{c\in \mathbb{Q}}\{\#\calZ(f_c,u)\}$.

Generalising the classical work of Atiyah and Hirzebruch on non-algebraic classes, recently Quick proved the existence of torsion non-algebraic elements in the Brown–Peterson tower. We construct non-torsion non-algebraic elements in the Brown–Peterson tower for the prime number 2.

We show that the dynamical degree of an (i.i.d) random sequence of dominant, rational self-maps on projective space is almost surely constant. We then apply this result to height growth and height counting problems in random orbits.

The Σ-invariants of Bieri–Neumann–Strebel and Bieri–Renz involve an action of a discrete group G on a geometrically suitable space M. In the early versions, M was always a finite-dimensional Euclidean space on which G acted by translations. A substantial literature exists on this, connecting the invariants to group theory and to tropical geometry (which, actually, Σ-theory anticipated). More recently, we have generalized these invariants to the case where M is a proper CAT(0) space on which G acts by isometries. The “zeroth stage” of this was developed in our paper [BG16]. The present paper provides a higher-dimensional extension of the theory to the “nth stage” for any n.
