We generalize Skriganov’s notion of weak admissibility for lattices to include standard lattices occurring in Diophantine approximation and algebraic number theory, and we prove estimates for the number of lattice points in sets such as aligned boxes. Our result improves on Skriganov’s celebrated counting result if the box is sufficiently distorted, the lattice is not admissible, and, e.g., symplectic or orthogonal. We establish a criterion under which our error term is sharp, and we provide examples in dimensions $2$ and $3$ using continued fractions. We also establish a similar counting result for primitive lattice points, and apply the latter to the classical problem of Diophantine approximation with primitive points as studied by Chalk, Erdős, and others. Finally, we use o-minimality to describe large classes of sets to which our counting results apply.

We study Piatetski-Shapiro sequences $(\lfloor n^{c}\rfloor )_{n}$ modulo $m$, for non-integer $c>1$ and positive $m$, and we are particularly interested in subword occurrences in those sequences. We prove that each block $\in \{0,1\}^{k}$ of length $k<c+1$ occurs as a subword with the frequency $2^{-k}$, while there are always blocks that do not occur. In particular, those sequences are not normal. For $1<c<2$, we estimate the number of subwords from above and below, yielding the fact that our sequences are deterministic and not morphic. Finally, using the Daboussi–Kátai criterion, we prove that the sequence $\lfloor n^{c}\rfloor$ modulo $m$ is asymptotically orthogonal to multiplicative functions bounded by 1 and with mean value 0.

Asymptotic analysis of the Hele-Shaw flow with a small moving obstacle is performed. The method of solution utilizes the uniform asymptotic formulas for Green’s and Neumann functions recently obtained by V. Maz’ya and A. Movchan. The theoretical results of the paper are illustrated by numerical simulations.

While the distribution of the non-trivial zeros of the Riemann zeta function constitutes a central theme in Mathematics, nothing is known about the algebraic nature of these non-trivial zeros. In this article, we study the transcendental nature of sums of the form

We show that if a finite, large enough subset $A$ of an arbitrary abelian group $G$ satisfies the small doubling condition $|A+A|\leqslant (\log |A|)^{1-{\it\varepsilon}}|A|$, then $A$ must contain a three-term arithmetic progression whose terms are not all equal, and $A+A$ must contain an arithmetic progression or a coset of a subgroup, either of which is of size at least $\exp [c(\log |A|)^{{\it\delta}}]$. This extends analogous results obtained by Sanders, and by Croot, Łaba and Sisask in the case where $G=\mathbb{Z}$.

It is often helpful to compute the intrinsic volumes of a set of which only a pixel image is observed. A computationally efficient approach, which is suggested by several authors and used in practice, is to approximate the intrinsic volumes by linear combinations of the pixel configuration counts. However, we will show that when this approach is used for the computation of an intrinsic volume other than volume or surface area, an asymptotic error of 100% of the correct value cannot be avoided. As a consequence we derive that estimators which ignore the data and return constant values are optimal with respect to a natural criterion which has already been applied successfully for the estimation of the surface area.

It is proved that the resolvent norm of an operator with a compact resolvent on a Banach space $X$ cannot be constant on an open set if the underlying space or its dual is complex strictly convex. It is also shown that this is not the case for an arbitrary Banach space: there exists a separable, reflexive space $X$ and an unbounded, densely defined operator acting in $X$ with a compact resolvent whose norm is constant in a neighbourhood of zero; moreover $X$ is isometric to a Hilbert space on a subspace of co-dimension $2$. There is also a bounded linear operator acting on the same space whose resolvent norm is constant in a neighbourhood of zero. It is shown that similar examples cannot exist in the co-dimension $1$ case.

We construct a universal function φ on the real line such that, for every continuously differentiable function f the range of f – φ has measure zero. We then apply this to obtain results on curve packing that generalize the Besicovitch set. In particular, we show that given a continuously differentiable family of measurable curves, there exists a plane set of measure zero containing a translate of each curve in the family. Examples are given to show that the differentiability hypothesis cannot be weakened to a Lipschitz condition of order α for any 0<α<1.

A classical problem in the additive theory of numbers is the determination of the minimal s such that for all sufficiently large n the equation

is solvable in natural numbers xk. Improving on earlier results the author [2] has been able to prove that one may take s = 18. In a survey article W. Schwarz asked for an analogue for diophantine inequalities [6]. As a first contribution to this subject we prove

Stated below are theorems concerning eigenvectors and spectral (partial spectral) radius of A which generalize the well-known theorems of Bonsall [3] and Krein and Rutman [7] on positive operators. Proofs are given in §2.

It is well known that the star domain

in the plane is boundedly reducible, that is, it contains a bounded star body with the same lattice determinant, namely √5. Hence the bounded star domain

has the same lattice determinant as K has if r is sufficiently large. The following result is therefore perhaps a little surprising.

Using toroidal co-ordinates, an exact solution is derived for the velocity field induced in two immiscible semi-infinite viscous fluids, possessing a plane interface, by the slow rotation of a concave spherical lens, which is such that the circle of intersection of the composite spherical surfaces lies in the plane of the interface. The expression for the torque acting on the lens is derived, and this is shown to be reducible to an analytic closed form, when the lens degenerates into a spherical bowl and the fluids are identical.

In [4], we investigated the spaces of continuous functions on countable products of compact Hausdorff spaces. Our main object here is to extend the discussion to arbitrary products of compact Hausdorff spaces. We prove the following theorems in Section 3.

Let X be a separable and metrizable space containing uncountably many pairwise disjoint copies of the compactum K. We discuss the question whether X must contain K × 2ω.

Let K be a convex body of dimension at least 3, and let p0 be a point. If every section of K through p0 is centrally symmetric, then Rogers proved in [6] that K is centrally symmetric, although p0 may not be the centre of K. If this is the case, then Aitchison, Petty and Rogers [1] and Larman [2] proved that K must be an ellipsoid. Suppose now that, for every direction, we can choose continuously a section of K that is centrally symmetric; if K is strictly convex, then Montejano [3] proved that K must be centrally symmetric. Consider now the following example. Let D be a (euclidean) ball centred at the origin from which two symmetric caps are deleted. Then D is centrally symmetric with respect to the origin, and has a lot of circular sections whose centre is not the origin. In fact, we can choose continuously, for every direction, a section of D which is centrally symmetric, in such a way that not all these sections pass through the origin. Nevertheless, no matter how we choose these sections, there are always necessarily many of them that do pass through the origin. For those sections, of course, we have not imposed any condition, which explains the fact that D is not a quadric elsewhere.

The question as to which “natural” sequences contain infinitely many primes is of considerable fascination to the number-theorist. One such “natura” sequence is [nc[ where [·] denotes integer part. Piatetski-Shapiro [10] showed that there are infinitely many primes in this sequence for 1 < c < 12/11, obtaining the expected asymptotic formula for the number of such primes. The exponent 12/11 has been increased gradually by a number of authors to the present record 45/38 held by Kumchev [9]. It is expected that there are infinitely many primes of the form [nc[ for all cεε[1, ∞)/ℤ. Deshouillers [3] showed that this is almost always true, in the sense of Lebesgue measure on [1, ∞). Balog [2] improved and generalized this result to show that, for almost all c > 1,
