In this paper we give a proof of the long-standing Upper-bound Conjecture for convex polytopes, which states that, for 1 ≤ j < d < v, the maximum possible number of j-faces of a d-polytope with v vertices is achieved by a cyclic polytope C(v, d).

It was remarked by Liouville in 1844 that there is an obvious limit to the accuracy with which algebraic numbers can be approximated by rational numbers; if α is an algebraic number of degree n (at least 2) then

for all rational numbers h/q, where A is a positive number depending only on α.

In 1935 van der Corput, in connection with his work on distribution functions, was led to the following conjecture which expresses the fact that no sequence can, in a certain sense, be too evenly distributed.

Consider an incompressible fluid of density p and kinematic viscosity v in an infinite two-dimensional domain. A slow steady motion of incompressible viscous liquid, bounded by an infinite rigid plane, which is generated when a rigid sphere of radius a moves steadily without rotation in a direction parallel to, and at a distance d from, the plane is considered. Use is made of bispherical coordinates, which were employed some years ago by G. B. Jeffery [1] and Stimson and Jeffery [2] in solving the axi-symmetrical problems in which the sphere is fixed and rotates about a diameter perpendicular to the plane, or when two spheres move without rotation along their line of centres in infinite liquid. The coordinate system has been used recently by Dean and O'Neill [3] in solving the problem in which the sphere is fixed and rotates about a diameter parallel to the plane.

In 1944 and 1945 H. Hadwiger [1, 2] proved the following theorems.

Theorem A. Let En be covered by n + 1 closed sets. Then there is one of the sets, within which all distances are realized.

Theorem B. Let En be covered by 4n−3 closed sets that are all mutually congruent. Then all distances are realized within each set.

Here a distance d is realized within a set S, if there are points x, y in S at distance d apart.

A steady motion of incompressible viscous liquid caused by the slow rotation of a rigid sphere of radius a is considered. The medium is bounded by an infinite rigid plane and the axis of rotation is parallel to, and at a distance d from, this plane. To complete the analysis the solution by successive approximation of an infinite set of linear equations is required. Satisfactory solutions have been found numerically for four values of d/a, of which 1·13 is the smallest; we gratefully acknowledge valuable help from Miss S. M. Burrough in this part of the work.

The purpose of this paper is to give a new and improved version of Linnik's large sieve, with some applications. The large sieve has its roots in the Hardy-Littlewood method, and in its most general form it may be considered as an inequality which relates a singular series arising from an integral where S(α) is any exponential sum, to the integral itself.

Often stones on beaches pounded by waves wear into quite smooth, regular shapes, sometimes apparently ellipsoidal and even spherical [8]. This paper begins with an idealization of this wearing process for materials isotropic with respect to wear, then develops an equation governing the idealized process, and goes on to show that a stone which is initially convex and centrally symmetric tends to assume a spherical shape as a consequence of the governing equation. This conclusion is predicated on the assumption that the mathematical conditions describing the wearing process are those of a well-posed problem.

The uniform approach of a solid sphere of radius a towards a stationary solid sphere through a viscous fluid is considered when the fluid motion may be regarded as essentially steady with Reynolds number sufficiently small to permit the linearization of the Navier–Stokes equations by neglect of the inertia terms. Discussion is given when the minimum clearance εa between the spheres is arbitrary and a detailed analysis is made of the asymptotic behaviour of the solution as the minimum clearance tends to zero by constructing matched asymptotic expansions. The forces on the spheres are shown to be of the form as a0ε−1 + b0logε + c0 + O(εlogε) when ε is small where a0, b0 and c0 are constants. The values of a0 and b0 are determined explicitly in the general case of arbitrary sized spheres and c0 is also determined explicitly when the stationary sphere degenerates into a plane. For this case, it is shown that the asymptotic expression for the force is useful in practice even when ε is not very small, the error being less than 3% when ε ∼ 0·5.

One of the earliest investigations of the acoustic disturbance created in a fluid of semi-infinite extent by the movement of a piston surrounded by an infinite plane rigid baffle was undertaken in 1878 by Rayleigh [1], who studied the harmonic oscillations of a piston of arbitrary shape. In subsequent years, a number of authors have presented methods for studying the “baffled piston problem”. A large portion of the literature has been concerned with a circular piston and particular attention has been devoted to the case in which the small amplitude oscillations of the piston are harmonic. References to these earlier works are given by Chadwick and Tupholme [2]. A solution to the more general problem in which the normal velocity of a circular piston is an arbitrary function of time was derived from the corresponding time-harmonic solution by Oberhettinger [3] and obtained more directly by Miles [4, see also 5]. Kozina and Makarov [6] considered the acoustic fields produced by the time-dependent motion of an arbitrarily-shaped piston.

In 1934 Gelfond [2] and Schneider [6] proved, independently, that the logarithm of an algebraic number to an algebraic base, other than 0 or 1, is either rational or transcendental and thereby solved the famous seventh problem of Hilbert. Among the many subsequent developments (cf. [4, 7, 8]), Gelfond [3] obtained, by means of a refinement of the method of proof, a positive lower bound for the absolute value of β1 log α1+β2 log α2, where β1, β2 denote algebraic numbers, not both 0, and α1,α1, denote algebraic numbers not 0 or 1, with log α1/log α2 irrational. Of particular interest is the special case in which β1,β2 denote integers. In this case it is easy to obtain a trivial positive lower bound (cf. [1; Lemma 2]), and the existence of a non-trivial bound follows from the Thue–Siegel–Roth theorem (see [4; Ch. I]). But Gelfond's result improves substantially on the former, and, unlike the latter, it is derived by an effective method of proof. Gelfond [4; p. 177] remarked that an analogous theorem for linear forms in arbitrarily many logarithms of algebraic numbers would be of great value for the solution of some apparently very difficult problems of number theory. It is the object of this paper to establish such a result.

This is the final paper of the series of three papers under the same title. The finite dimensional theory developed in the first of them 7 contains first of all:

(a) a calculus having among its consequences the calculi of convex subdifferentials and generalized gradients of Clarke (henceforth sometimes abbreviated C.g.g.) in the most general form which is partly due to the fact that in a finite dimensional space

for any convex function f and

for any SX (A means approximate, C means Clarke); and (b) a theorem stating that approximate subdifferentials are minimal (as sets) among all possible subdifferentials satisfying one or another set of conditions (usually very natural).

Ramanujan's work on the asymptotic behaviour of the hypergeometric function has been recently refined to the zero-balanced Gaussian hypergeometric function F(a, b; a + b; x) as x→1.We extend these results for F(a, b; c; x) when a, b, c>0 and c<a + b.
