Carlosbarbosaite, ideally (UO2)2Nb2O6(OH)2·2H2O, is a new mineral which occurs as a late cavity filling in albite in the Jaguaraçu pegmatite, Jaguaraçu municipality, Minas Gerais, Brazil. The name honours Carlos do Prado Barbosa (1917–2003). Carlosbarbosaite forms long flattened lath-like crystals with a very simple orthorhombic morphology. The crystals are elongated along [001] and flattened on (100); they are up to 120 μm long and 2–5 μm thick. The colour is cream to pale yellow, the streak yellowish white and the lustre vitreous. The mineral is transparent (as individual crystals) to translucent (massive). It is not fluorescent under either long-wave or short-wave ultraviolet radiation. Carlosbarbosaite is biaxial(+) with α = 1.760(5), β = 1.775(5), γ = 1.795(5), 2Vmeas. = 70(1)º, 2Vcalc. = 83º. The orientation is X || a, Y || b, Z || c. Pleochroism is weak, in yellowish green shades, which are most intense in the Z direction. Two samples were analysed. For sample 1, the composition is: UO3 54.52, CaO 2.07, Ce2O3 0.33, Nd2O3 0.49, Nb2O5 14.11, Ta2O5 15.25, TiO2 2.20, SiO2 2.14, Fe2O3 1.08, Al2O3 0.73, H2O (calc.) 11.49, total 104.41 wt.%; the empirical formula is (□0.68Ca0.28Nd0.02Ce0.02)Σ=1.00[U1.44□0.56O2.88(H2O)1.12](Nb0.80Ta0.52Si0.27Ti0.21Al0.11Fe0.10)Σ=2.01 O4.72(OH)3.20(H2O)2.08. For sample 2, the composition is: UO3 41.83, CaO 2.10, Ce2O3 0.31, Nd2O3 1.12, Nb2 O5 14.64, Ta2O5 16.34, TiO2 0.95, SiO2 3.55, Fe2O3 0.89, Al2O3 0.71, H2O (calc.) 14.99, total 97.43 wt.%; the empirical formula is (□0.67Ca0.27Nd0.05Ce0.01)Σ=1.00[U1.04□0.96O2.08(H2O)1.92] (Nb0.79Ta0.53Si0.42Ti0.08Al0.10Fe0.08)Σ=2.00O4.00(OH)3.96(H2O)2.04. The ideal endmember formula is (UO2)2Nb2O6(OH)2·2H2O. Calculated densities are 4.713 g cm-3 (sample 1) and 4.172 g cm-3 (sample 2). Infrared spectra show that both (OH) and H2O are present. The strongest eight X-ray powder-diffraction lines [listed as d in Å (I)(hkl)] are: 8.405(8)(110), 7.081(10)(200), 4.201(9)(220), 3.333(6)(202), 3.053(8)(022), 2.931(7)(420), 2.803(6)(222) and 2.589(5)(040,402). The crystal structure was solved using single-crystal X-ray diffraction (R = 0.037) which gave the following data: orthorhombic, Cmcm, a = 14.150(6), b = 10.395(4), c = 7.529(3) Å, V = 1107(1) Å3, Z = 4. The crystal structure contains a single U site with an appreciable deficiency in electron scattering, which is populated by U atoms and vacancies. The U site is surrounded by seven O atoms in a pentagonal bipyramidal arrangement. The Nb site is coordinated by four O atoms and two OH groups in an octahedral arrangement. The half-occupied tunnel Ca site is coordinated by four O atoms and four H2O groups. Octahedrally coordinated Nb polyhedra share edges and corners to form Nb2O6(OH)2 double chains, and edge-sharing pentagonal bipyramidal U polyhedra form UO5 chains. The Nb2O6(OH)2 and UO5 chains share edges to form an open U—Nb—φ framework with tunnels along [001] that contain Ca(H2O)4 clusters. Carlosbarbosaite is closely related to a family of synthetic U–Nb–ϕ framework tunnel structures, it differs in that is has an (OH)-bearing framework and Ca(H2O)4 tunnel occupant. The structure of carlosbarbosaite resembles that of holfertite.

Electron-microprobe analyses of Russian and Mongolian chevkinite-group minerals from little-known host lithologies, including various metasomatic rocks, quartzolites and an apatite deposit, are presented. The mineral species analysed include chevkinite-(Ce), perrierite-(Ce), polyakovite-(Ce) and Sr- and Zr-rich perrierite-(Ce). Compositional variation in the Sr-rich members of the group is broadly represented by the exchange vector (Fe + Mn + Al + REE) ↔ (Ca + Sr + Ti + Zr). Despite the varied parageneses, the chevkinite-(Ce) compositions are similar to previously published data. Many crystals have strong internal compositional variations, partly produced during primary crystallization and partly during low-temperature hydrothermal alteration.

The magma source and evolution of a zoned breccia pipe on the southern Beara Peninsula in southwest Ireland are investigated using the geochemistry of the host mineral assemblages. The clast-poor inner zone of the pipe has a magnesium-rich silicocarbonatite whole-rock composition (14.30 wt.% MgO; 31.80 wt.% SiO2). The silicocarbonatite has retained an ultimate mantle source 13C isotopic composition after metamorphism, consistent with the presence of mantle debris. The silicocarbonatite is Cr-, Ni- and Co-rich (847 ppm, 611 ppm and 60 ppm, respectively) but REE depleted compared with volcanic dolomite carbonatites worldwide. The mineral assemblage consists of Sr-rich (0.55 wt.% SrO) ferroan dolomite, magnesite and pseudomorphs of chlorite after phlogopite, consistent with derivation from a carbonated and hydrated mantle. However, chrome spinel crystals (≤4 40.14 wt.% Cr2O3) are compositionally indistinguishable from unmetasomatized spinel macrocrysts in kimberlites. The silicocarbonatite is inferred to represent a magma produced by partial melting of metasomatized mantle at physical conditions between those in which primary dolomite carbonatite and ultramafic magmas of high-pressure origin form. The primary silicocarbonatite magma ascended and sampled mantle material in a manner similar to kimberlite, and subsequently lost volatile components due to release of metasomatic fluids and later metamorphism.

Raberite, ideally Tl5Ag4As6SbS15, is a new mineral from Lengenbach quarry in the Binn Valley, Valais, Switzerland. It occurs very rarely as euhedral crystals up to 150 m m across associated with yellow needle-like smithite, realgar, hatchite and probable trechmannite, edenharterite, jentschite and two unidentified sulfosalts. Raberite is opaque with a metallic lustre and has a dark brown–red streak. It is brittle with a Vickers hardness (VHN10) of 52 kg mm–2 (range 50–55) corresponding to a Mohs hardness of 2½–3. In reflected light raberite is moderately bireflectant and very weakly pleochroic from light grey to a slightly greenish grey. It is very weakly anisotropic with greyish to light blue rotation tints between crossed polars. Internal reflections are absent. Reflectance percentages for the four COM wavelengths [listed as Rmin, Rmax, (λ)] are 30.6, 31.8 (471.1 nm), 28.1, 29.3 (548.3 nm), 27.1, 28.0 (586.6 nm), and 25.8, 26.9 (652.3 nm).

Raberite is triclinic, space group P1, with a = 8.920(1), b = 9.429(1), c = 20.062(3) Å, α = 79.66(1), β = 88.84(1), γ = 62.72(1)º, V = 1471.6(4) Å3 and Z = 2. The crystal structure [R1 = 0.0827 for 2110 reflections with I > 2σ(I)] consists of columns of nine-coordinate Tl atoms forming irregular polyhedra extending along [001] and forming sheets parallel to (010). The columns are decorated by cornersharing MS3 pyramids (M = As, Sb) and linked by AgS3 triangles. Of the seven M positions, one is dominated by Sb and the others by As; the mean M-S bond distances reflect As ↔ Sb substitution at these sites.

The eight strongest lines in the powder diffraction pattern [dcalc in Å (I) (hkl)] are: 3.580 (100) (13); 3.506 (58) (23); 3.281 (73) (006); 3.017 (54) (3); 3.001 (98) (133); 2.657 (51) (226); 2.636 (46) (300); 2.591 (57) (330). A mean of 9 electron microprobe analyses gave Tl 39.55(13), Ag 18.42(8), Cu 0.06(2), As 17.08(7), Sb 5.61(6), S 19.15(11); total 99.87 wt.%, which corresponds to Tl4.85Ag4.28Cu0.02As5.72Sb1.16S14.97 with 31 atoms per formula unit. The new mineral has been approved by the IMA-CNMNC Commission (IMA 2012-017) and is named for Thomas Raber, an expert on Lengenbach minerals.

Three Angolan carbonatites were selected to evaluate the change in composition of pyrochlores during magmatic evolution: the Tchivira carbonatites occur in a plutonic complex, the Bonga carbonatites represent hypabyssal carbonatites and the Catanda carbonatites are volcanic in origin. In Tchivira pyrochlore, zoning is poorly developed; fluorine is dominant at the Y site; chemical zoning may arise as a result of substitutions for Nb in the B site; and the rare earth element (REE), U, Th and large-ion lithophile element (LILE) contents are very low. Pyrochlores from Bonga show oscillatory zonation; the F and Na contents are lower than those in the pyrochlores from Tchivira; and as substitution of Na at the A site increases, the Th, U, REE contents and inferred vacancies also increase. Pyrochlores from Catanda display complex textures. They generally have a rounded corroded core, which is mantled by two or three later generations. The core composition is similar to the Bonga pyrochlores. The rims are enriched in Zr, Ta, Th, Ce and U, but depleted in F and Na. In pyrochlores from the Angolan carbonatites, the F and Na contents decrease from plutonic to volcanic settings and there is enrichment of Th, U and REE in the A site and Ta and Zr in the B site. Zoning may be explained by changes in the activity of F, due to the crystallization of fluorite or apatite in the plutonic and hypabyssal carbonatites, or to volatile exsolution in the volcanic carbonatites.

The crystal structure and chemical composition of two samples of fettelite from the type locality, including a portion of the holotype material, was investigated to verify if a previously proposed revision of the chemical formula was applicable, and to study the role of cation substitution for Hg that would suggest new members of the fettelite family. The crystal structure of fettelite from the type locality was found to be equivalent to that reported previously for the Chilean occurrence, and consists of an alternation of two kinds of layers along c: layer A with general composition [Ag6As2S7]2– and layer B with general composition [Ag10HgAs2S8]2+. In this structure, the Ag atoms occur in various coordination configurations, varying from quasi-linear to quasi-tetrahedral, the AsS3 groups form pyramids as are typically observed in sulfosalts, and Hg links two sulfur atoms in a linear coordination. The refined compositions for the crystals in this study, [Ag6As2S7][Ag10(Fe0.53Hg0.47)As2S8] (R100124) and [Ag6As2S7][Ag10(Hg0.79Cu0.21)As2S8] (R110042), clearly indicate that new mineral species related to fettelite are likely to be found in nature.

Vitrification is used for the immobilization and conditioning of high-level waste (HLW) arising from the reprocessing of spent nuclear fuel in the UK. Vitrification is also under consideration for the immobilization of certain intermediate-level wastes (ILW), where there may be advantages of volume reduction and removal of uncertainties in long-term waste behaviour, compared to encapsulation in a cement grout. This paper gives an overview of recent work into the chemical durability of UK vitrified wasteforms to inform the technical specification for the disposal facilities for these waste products and the treatment of their long-term behaviour in post-closure performance assessment. This has included: (1) measurements of the initial glass dissolution rates of a simulated HLW Magnox waste glass in a range of groundwater types representative of potential UK host geologies and in simulated high pH near-field porewaters relevant to potential disposal concepts, using Product Consistency Test type-B (PCT-B) at 40°C; and (2) durability testing of three simulant ILW glasses in a saturated calcium hydroxide buffered solution to simulate conditions in cement-based disposal vaults, using PCT-B tests at 50°C.

The experimentally defined initial rate of HLW Magnox waste glass dissolution in a range of simulated groundwater compositions appears to be similar regardless of the ionic strength and major element composition of the solution. The release of caesium from HLW Magnox waste glass appears to be sensitive to solution composition. Caesium is selectively retained in the glass compared to other soluble components in the two low ionic strength solutions, but is released at similar rates to other soluble components in the three groundwaters and Ca(OH)2 solution. Whether this change in caesium retention is an ionic strength effect or is related to changes in the nature of the surface alteration layer formed on the glass, has yet to be established. For HLW Magnox waste glass, dissolution is accelerated at high pH in NaOH solution, however, the presence of calcium acts to mitigate the effects of high pH, at least initially. In Ca(OH)2 solution, calcium is found to react with all the glasses studied leading to the formation of calcium-containing alteration products. The initial dissolution behaviour in Ca(OH)2 solution varies with glass composition and in particular appears to be sensitive to the boron content.

Studies of the stability of the oxides schafarzikite, FeSb2O4, and tripuhyite, FeSbO4, have been undertaken to clarify the roles these secondary minerals may have in determining the dispersion of antimony in oxidizing environments. Solubilities were determined at 298.15 K in aqueous HNO3, and these data were used to calculate values of ΔGfϴ at the same temperature. The derived Δ Gfϴ (s, 298.15 K) values for FeSb2O4 and FeSbO4 are – 959.4±4.3 and – 836.8±2.2 kJ mol–1, respectively. These results have been compared with electrochemically derived data, extrapolated from 771–981 K. The present study shows conclusively that although the mobility of Sb above the water table is limited by simple Sb(III) and Sb(V) oxides and stibiconite-group minerals, depending upon the prevailing redox potential and pH, tripuhyite is an important ultimate sink for Sb in the supergene environment. It is highly insoluble even in strongly acidic conditions and its anomalous stability at ambient temperatures causes the common mineral goethite, FeOOH, to react to form tripuhyite at activities of Sb(OH)5(aq) as low as 10–11. The comparatively limited numbers of reported occurrences of tripuhyite in the supergene zone are almost certainly due to the fact that its physical properties, especially colour and habit, are remarkably similar to those of goethite. In contrast, the small number of reported occurrences of schafarzikite can be related to its decomposition to tripuhyite as redox potentials rise at the top of the supergene zone and the fact that it decomposes to sénarmontite, Sb2O3, in acidic conditions, releasing Fe2+ ions into solution. In general, the findings confirm the immobility of Sb in near-surface conditions. Geochemical settings favouring the formation of the above minerals have been assessed using the results of the present study and data from the literature.

Granitic pegmatites are exceptional igneous rocks and the possible role of an immiscibility process in their origin is strongly debated. To investigate metal and metalloid behaviour in hydrous peraluminous systems (aluminium saturation index, ASI >1), we analysed 15 quartz-hosted primary melt and fluid inclusions from pegmatites in the Ehrenfriedersdorf Complex (Erzgebirge, Germany) and 26 primary melt inclusions from leucogranites of the Ehrenfriedersdorf district (Germany), Kymi (Finland) and Erongo (Namibia) by femtosecond laser ablation inductively coupled plasma quadrupole mass spectrometry. The results presented here for 32 elements provide evidence for metal and metalloid fractionation between two types of immiscible melts (A and B) and NaCl – HCl-rich brine in the pegmatite system. No evidence for the boundary layer effect was observed in the 40 – 500 μm size melt inclusions that were investigated. The data on the Ehrenfriedersdorf pegmatites allow quantification of the metal and metalloid partitioning between natural NaCl-rich brine and the two types of melt (e.g. KAsbrine/type-A,B melts = 0.01 – 1.7; KSbbrine/type-A,B melts = 10 – 285; KZnbrine/type-A,B melts ≥ 50; KPbbrine/type-A melt ≥ 50; KAgbrine/type-A melt = 46). These data are in accord with existing natural and experimental data on equilibrium fluid – melt partitioning as well as spectroscopic data on the metal and metalloid complexation in hydrous aluminosilicate melts and NaCl – HCl-rich fluids.

Aluminium-bearing strunzite, [Mn0.65Fe0.26Zn0.08Mg0.01]2+[Fe1.50Al0.50]3+(PO4)2(OH)2·6H2O, occurs as fibrous aggregates in a crystallographically oriented association with jahnsite on altered zwieselite samples from the phosphate pegmatite at Hagendorf Süd, Bavaria, Germany. Synchrotron X-ray data were collected from a 3 μm diameter fibre and refined in space group P to R1 = 0.054 for 1484 observed reflections. The refinement confirmed the results of chemical analyses which showed that one quarter of the trivalent iron in the strunzite crystals is replaced by aluminium. The paragenesis revealed by scanning electron microscopy, in combination with chemical analyses and a crystal-chemical comparison of the strunzite and jahnsite structures, are consistent with strunzite being formed from jahnsite by selective leaching of (100) metal—phosphate layers containing large divalent Ca and Mn atoms.

Hectorite was synthesized from a Eu(III)-bearing brucite precursor in a multistep procedure. In a separate experiment, Eu(III) ions were adsorbed onto hectorite in suspension. Colloids were extracted from both samples. The size distributions in the colloidal fractions were characterizedby application of the asymmetrical flow field-flow fractionation (AsFlFFF) method and the corresponding elemental compositions were obtained by ICP-MS. Extended X-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS) spectroscopy was used to characterize the local chemical environment surrounding Eu in thebulk samples and in the colloidal fractions.

The EXAFS results show that Eu is associated with hectorite upon co-precipitation or adsorption. Results from AsFlFFF suggest that Eu is structurally associated with the colloidal fraction extracted from bulk Eu-bearing co-precipitated hectorite.The AsFlFFF data are different for the colloidal fraction containing Eu(III) adsorbed on hectorite; in this sample they are consistent with a surface retention mechanism. These small but significant differences enable surface sorbed Eu to be distinguished from co-precipitated Eu. Eu is verylikely located in a clay-like environment in the co-precipitation experiment, and it forms inner-sphere surface complexes in the adsorption experiment. The results obtained using the different experimental techniques agree, and show the benefits of using multiple methods of analysis.

Trivalent europium was used as non-radioactive chemical homologue for trivalent actinides. Similar retention mechanisms are expected for the trivalent actinides if they are co-precipitating with or adsorbing onto sheet silicates. The present study provides information which can be usefullyadded to the safety assessments required for deeply buried nuclear waste disposal sites.

Mechanisms for the incorporation of carbonate into minerals of the apatite group have been explored in both the geological and medical literature. An important problem with respect to biological apatite, which requires further clarification, is the hydroxyl content of the carbonatedapatite of bone. Recent studies reveal bone apatite to contain only ∼20 mol.% of the hydroxyl content of stoichiometric hydroxylapatite, with negligible chloride or fluoride. We investigated the hypothesis that the development of vacancies in the hydroxyl channel sites is a charge-balancingmechanism for the substitution of carbonate ions into hydroxylapatite. Raman spectroscopic analyses of synthetic carbonated apatites (containing 1 to >15 wt.% carbonate) show that their hydroxyl ion concentration correlates inversely with carbonate concentration. The specific relationshipbetween carbonate and hydroxyl concentration in these samples closely follows the theoretical relationship defined by type-B substitution of carbonate for phosphate in the apatite structure. However, the 6–8 wt.% carbonate concentration in bone apatite falls far short of accounting forall of the hydroxyl depletion that occurs in bone apatite. Some of the additional hydroxyl depletion in bone apatite might result from substitution of Na+ for Ca2+, but further mechanism(s), perhaps (HPO4)2– substitution, must also play a significantrole.

We report a single-crystal Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR) study of a sample of pollucite from Maine, USA. Prior to our work, the sample had been characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction, neutron diffraction and electron-probe microanalysis. It is cubic Ia3d, with a crystal-chemical formula Na1.93(Cs10.48Rb0.31K0.04)Σ=10.83(Al14.45Si33.97)Σ=48.42O96·3.92H2O, and an H2O content, determined by thermogravimetric analysis, of 1.6 wt.%. The single-crystal FTIR spectrum has a doublet of intense bands at 3670 and 3589 cm–1, which are assigned to the ν3 and ν1 stretching modes of the H2O molecule, respectively. A very intense and sharp peak at 1620 cm–1 is assigned to the ν2 bending vibration. In the near-infrared region there is a relatively intense peak at 5270 cm–1, which is assigned to a combination (ν2 + ν3) mode of H2O, and a weak but well defined doublet at 7118 and 6831 cm–1, which is assigned to the first overtones of the fundamental stretching modes. A relatively weak but extremely sharp peak at 2348 cm–1 shows that the pollucite contains CO2 molecules in structural cavities. Mapping the sample using FTIR indicates that both H2O and CO2 are homogeneously distributed. Secondary ion mass spectrometry yielded an average CO2 content of 0.09±0.02 wt.%. On the basis of this value, we determined the integrated molar absorption coefficient for the spectroscopic analysis of CO2 in pollucite to be εiCO2 = 11,000±3000 l mol–1 cm–2; the linear molar absorption coefficient for the same integration range is εlCO2 = 1600±500 l mol–1 cm–1.

The Virulundo carbonatite in Angola is one of the largest in the world and contains pyrochlore as an accessory mineral in all of the carbonatite units (calciocarbonatites, ferrocarbonatites, carbonatite breccias and trachytoids). The primary magmatic pyrochlore is fluorine dominant and typically contains about equal molar quantities of Ca and Na at the A site. High-temperature hydrothermal processes have resulted in the pseudomorphic replacement of the primary pyrochlore by a second generation of pyrochlore with less F and Na. Low-temperature hydrothermal replacement of the first and second generation pyrochlore, associated with quartz-carbonate-fluorite vein formation in the carbonatite, has produced a third generation of pyrochlore, with a high Sr content. The Sr appears to have been released by low-temperature hydrothermal replacement of the primary magmatic carbonates. Finally, supergene alteration processes have produced late-stage carbonates, goethite, hollandite and rare earth element (REE) minerals (mainly synchysite-(Ce), britholite-(Ce), britholite-(La), cerite-(Ce)). Cerium separated from the other REE s in oxidizing conditions and Ce4+ was incorporated into a late generation of supergene pyrochlore, which is strongly enriched in Ba and strongly depleted in Ca and Na.

Type specimens of the molybdoarsenates betpakdalite, natrobetpakdalite and obradovicite and the molybdophosphates mendozavilite, paramendozavilite and melkovite, and similar material from other sources, have been examined in an effort to elucidate the relations among these phases, which we designate as the heteropolymolybdate family of minerals. Using electron microprobe analysis, X-ray powder diffraction and single-crystal X-ray diffraction with crystal structure determination where possible, it was found that natrobetpakdalite, mendozavilite and melkovite are isostructural with betpakdalite and that obradovicite has a closely related structure.

The betpakdalite and obradovicite structure types are based on frameworks containing four-member clusters of edge-sharing MoO6 octahedra that link by sharing corners with other clusters, with Fe3+O6 octahedra and with PO4 or AsO4 tetrahedra (T). The structures differ in the linkages through the Fe3+O6 octahedra, which produce different but closely related framework configurations. The structures contain two types of non-framework cation sites, which are designated A and B. In general, there are two or more A sites partially occupied by disordered, generally larger cations that are coordinated to O atoms in the framework and to H2O molecules. The B site is occupied by a smaller cation that is octahedrally coordinated to H2O molecules. The general formula for minerals with either the betpakdalite or the obradovicite structure is: [A2(H2O)nB(H2O)6][Mo8T2Fe3+3O30+7(OH)7–x], where x is the total charge of the cations in the A and B sites (+3 to +7) and n is variable, ideally 17 for arsenates and 15 for phosphates. The ideal total number of A cations is defined as 2 in the general formula, but varies from 1 to 3.8 in analysed samples. Dominant cations at the A site include K, Na and Ca and at the B site Na, Ca, Mg, Cu and Fe. The combinations that have been identified in this study define six new heteropolymolybdate species.

A suffix-based nomenclature scheme is established for minerals of the betpakdalite, mendozavilite and obradovicite groups, with the following root names based on the structure types and the T-site cations: betpakdalite (T = As), mendozavilite (T = P) and obradovicite (T = As). Two suffixes of the form -AB, corresponding to the dominant cations in the two different types of non-framework cation sites complete the species name. The historical name melkovite is retained rather than introducing mendozavilite-CaCa.

Our investigation of the paramendozavilite type specimen revealed no paramendozavilite, but an apparently closely related new mineral; however, another sample of paramendozavilite analysed had K > Na.

Natural onyx agate from Mali was investigated in an integrated mineralogical and chemical study to reveal the origin of the unusual black colouration. Detailed studies by polarizing microscopy, scanning electron microscopy and micro-Raman spectroscopy showed that the colour of the dark bands is related to the incorporation of small particles of carbon (low-crystalline graphite) up to 200 nm in size into the cryptocrystalline silica matrix. The dark bands have carbon contents of 1.88 wt.%. The location of the graphite particles is closely related to the primary structural banding in the chalcedony. Cathodoluminescence data shows that the banding is interrupted by small fissures containing secondary hydrothermal quartz. The carbon isotope composition (δ13C value of –31.1±0.2‰) of the carbonaceous material points to an organic precursor. Both the direct hydrothermal formation of graphite from methane under elevated temperature and the graphitization of organic precursors by secondary hydrothermal or metamorphic overprint are possible explanations for the colour of the dark bands. The graphitization of organic precursors results in an intense electron spin resonance line at geff = 2.0026.

X-ray computed tomography augmented by elemental microanalysis has been used to characterize two drill cores from the Borrowdale Volcanic Group, west Cumbria, UK. Information about the three-dimensional (3D) distribution of mineral phases was obtained non-destructively, and regionsof interest were extracted for thin sectioning and elemental analysis. This revealed the presence of pyrite and other iron- and iron-titanium-bearing minerals. X-ray computed tomography is a very useful tool for 3D visualization, but the limitations of the tomography system used made it difficultto distinguish between regions with similar compositions, such as the different layers within the calcite veins. Methods by which these limitations might be overcome are briefly discussed.

Understanding the biogeochemical behaviour of actinides in the environment is essential for the longterm stewardship of radionuclide contaminated land. Plutonium is of particular concern due its high radiotoxicity, long half-life and complex chemistry, with these factors contributing to the limited literature available on its environmental behaviour. Here, we investigate the biogeochemistry of Pu in contaminated soil as microbial processes have the potential to mobilize Pu through numerous mechanisms including the reduction of Pu(IV) to the potentially more mobile Pu(III). After the addition of glucose to stimulate microbial activities, there was a substantial shift in the 16S rRNA gene profile of the extant microbial communities between days 0 and 44 with an increase in Clostridium species, known glucose fermenters which have been reported to facilitate the reduction of Pu(IV) to Pu(III). A minor increase in Pu mobility was observed at day 44, returning to initial levels by day 118. The negligible change in Pu mobility, despite the onset of reducing conditions and changing mineralogy, would suggest the Pu is highly refractory. This information is important for developing remediation options for Pu-contaminated soils, suggesting that managing legacy Pu in situ may be preferred to mobilization via the stimulation of metal-reducing bacteria.

Whiteite-(CaMnMn), CaMnMn2Al2[PO4]4(OH)2·8H2O, is a new hydrous phosphate of Ca, Mn and Al, which is closely related to both jahnsite-(CaMnMn) and the minerals of the whiteite group. It is monoclinic, P2/a, with a = 15.02(2), b = 6.95(1), c =10.13(3) Å, β = 111.6(1)°, V = 983.3(6) Å3, Z = 2 (from powder diffraction data) or a = 15.020(5), b = 6.959(2), c = 10.237(3) Å, β = 111.740(4)°,V = 984.3(5) Å3, Z = 2 (from single-crystal diffraction data). The mineral was found in the Hagendorf Süd granitic pegmatite (Germany) as small (up to 0.5 mm in size) crystals elongated on a and tabular on {010}. The crystals are either simply or polysyntheticallytwinned on {001}. They crystallize on the walls of voids within altered zwieselite crystals or form coronas (up to 1 mm in diameter) around cubic crystals of uraninite. The mineral is transparent, colourless to pale yellow (depending on Al–Fe3+ substitution), with a vitreouslustre and a white streak. The cleavage is perfect on {001}, the fracture is stepped and the Mohs hardness is 3½. In transmitted light, the mineral is colourless; dispersion was not observed. Whiteite-(CaMnMn) is biaxial (+), α = 1.589(2), β = 1.592(2), γ = 1.601(2)(589 nm), 2Vmeas = 60(10)°, 2Vcalc = 60.3°. The optical orientation is X = b, Z^a = 5°. The calculated and measured densities are D calc = 2.768 and D meas = 2.70(3) g cm–3, respectively.The mean chemical composition determined by electron microprobe is Na2O 0.53, MgO 0.88, Al2O3 11.66, P2O5 34.58, CaO 4.29, MnO 17.32, FeO 8.32, ZnO 2.60 wt.%, with H2O 19.50 wt.% (determined by the Penfield method), giving atotal of 99.68 wt.%. The empirical formula calculated on the basis of four phosphorus atoms per formula unit, with ferric iron calculated to maintain charge balance, is (Ca0.63Zn0.26Na0.14)Σ1.03(Mn0.60Fe0.40 2+)Σ1.00(Mn1.40Fe0.37 2+Mg0.18Fe0.06 3+)Σ2.01(Al1.88Fe0.12 3+)Σ2.00[PO4]4(OH)2·7.89H2O.The simplified formula is CaMnMn2Al2[PO4]4(OH)2·8H2O. The mineral is easily soluble in 10% HCl at room temperature. The strongest X-ray powder-diffraction lines [listed as d in Å (I) (hkl)]are as follows: 9.443(65)(001), 5.596(25)(011), 4.929(80)(210), 4.719(47)(002), 3.494(46)(400), 2.7958(100)(022). The crystal structure of whiteite-(CaMnMn) was refined for a single crystal twinned on (001) to R 1 = 0.068 on the basis of 5702 unique observed reflections. Itis similar to the structures of other members of the whiteite group. The mineral is named for the chemical composition, in accordance with whiteite-group nomenclature.

The elastic and structural behaviour of dehydrated analcime in compression in a non-penetrating medium up to 3 GPa was studied in a diamond anvil cell using in situ synchrotron powder diffraction. A first-order phase transition at 0.4–0.7 GPa is accompanied by a symmetry change from monoclinic (I2/a) to pseudo-rhombohedral (R3) due to trigonalization of the aluminosilicate framework. This is due to the migration of cations to new positions close to the 6-membered rings forming the channels. The reduction of the mean aperture of the structure-forming 6- and 8-membered rings, as a result of tetrahedral tilting, leads to a 7.5% reduction in volume at the phase transition. The bulk modulus values are 38(2) GPa for the low pressure (LP) phase [fitted with a Murnaghan equation of state, K' = 4 (fixed)] and 11(4) GPa for the high pressure (HP) phase [fitted with a third-order Birch–Murnaghan equation of state, K' = 9(1)]. The elastic behaviour of the LP phase is anisotropic, with compressibilities βa:βb:βc in the ratio 1:4:2; the most compressible direction b coinciding with the orientation of empty 8-membered rings. The compressibility of the HP phase is isotropic. Trigonalization appears to be the most effective (and probably unique) mechanism of radical volume contraction for the ANA structure type.
