Photo taken by Rimantė Jaugaitė: “The picture depicts the exhibition In the footsteps of those who did (not) cross / Koracima onih koji (ni)su prešli at the Srebrenica-Potocčari Memorial Centre in Bosnia and Herzegovina. It honors the mainly Bosniak (Bosnian Muslim) men who escaped (or tried to escape) from Srebrenica by walking more than 100 km through the forests, across enemy lines, to the free territory of Tuzla. “Has he crossed over?” became the most frequently asked question at the Dubrava airbase near Tuzla in July 1995, where mothers, grandmothers, and sisters waited for their loved ones. Those who “crossed over” managed to survive the genocide. Unfortunately, hundreds were caught and killed by Bosnian Serb forces on their way to Tuzla. The shoes found on this trail, now known as “The Death March,” have become the main objects of the exhibition. In this picture, taken on 10 August 2022, I captured an immersive angle between the soles of the shoes on the glass and their shadows on the floor.”
