We investigated interactions between plant roots, protozoa and nematodes after addition of patches containing inorganic or organic nitrogen in order to determine whether root proliferation could explain the capture of N by the plant from the patch. Decomposition of a 15N/13C, dual-labelled, organic patch in the absence of plant roots was also examined. In the decomposing patch the amounts of 13C and 15N remaining co-varied and both declined with time. Nematode numbers increased. However, protozoan biomass and inorganic N (NO3− and NH4+) availability did not significantly alter as decomposition of the patch progressed. Addition of inorganic N patches, as NH4NO3 solutions, to the first lateral to emerge from the main seminal root axis of Lolium perenne L. seedlings had no effect on root growth compared with controls 16 d after addition. Protozoan biomass increased. Furthermore, log protozoan biomass and NO3− concentrations of the growth medium were significantly (P<0·05) and positively related. Plant response (i.e. biomass production, N capture and root length) to an added organic patch was examined using five different grass species (Festuca arundinacea L., Phleum pratense L., Poa pratensis L., Dactylis glomerata L. and L. perenne). Total plant biomass was significantly (P<0·05) repressed by an organic patch. Plant N content was reduced when an organic patch was present but N concentrations were greater. Roots were generally slow to proliferate within the patch but there was a significant (P<0·05) species×patch interaction for root length within the patch at harvest and in the 2-cm band below it. However, 15N capture by the plants was not related to mean root length duration. All species captured similar amounts of 15N (c. 3–5%) at harvest as a percentage of the initial 15N added in the organic patch. Similarly, the percentage of the total N captured from the patch was not related to the proportion of the root weight within the patch. The fraction of the captured N from the organic patch as a percentage of the plants' total N, however, did differ among species. Substantial amounts (>62%) of the 15N initially added remained in the patch at harvest. Much less (c. 13–21%) 13C remained in the patch. Protozoan biomass and nematode numbers increased significantly (P<0·05) in the organic patch, although the relationship between the two groups was not significant. As in the inorganic N study, the relationship between log protozoan biomass and NO3− concentrations in the soil was significantly positive. We conclude that, when grown in monoculture, plants' N capture from an organic patch is not a simple function of root proliferation. External factors, not plant attributes, are more important in controlling patch exploitation.

Different aspects of salt excretion from leaves of the xero-halophyte Reaumuria hirtella Jaub. et Sp. (Tamaricaceae) were investigated under the extremely arid conditions of the desert. The diurnal excretion pattern, which gradually decreased toward midday, showed a negative correlation with the daily transpiration pattern. The relative excretion, which is the ratio between the absolute excretion of Na+ and the change in its internal content, was maximal at sites with low salinity, and decreased when the concentration of NaCl in the root environment increased. By contrast, the absolute excretion increased from 253 to 323 mmol Na+ g−1 f. wt per 12 h with increase in the total soil salinity from 0·24 to 1·23%, respectively. Water stress conditions, caused either by increasing soil salinity or by dryness of the atmosphere, greatly influenced the efficiency of excretion process.

Six ions: Na+, K+, Ca2+, Mg2+, Cl− and SO42− constituted 96·8% of the d. wt of the field-collected secreted salts. Na+ and Cl−, which were the predominating ions in the soil solution of the root environment, were also the predominantly secreted, constituting c. 89% of salts secreted. The proportion of Na+ which was prevented from entry into the roots increased with increasing Na+ concentration in the soil solution. More than 67% of the absorbed NaCl was secreted by leaves during the day. However, the accumulated salts contributed to the osmotic potential (ψs) and improved the plant water status. The osmotic potential of the plant sap at the end of the day or during periods of low excretion rates was shown to be decreased −7·3 to −13·7 bar from that in the morning. The fraction of osmotic potential decreased during the day (Δψs) was positively correlated with the soil salinity. These retained salts are expelled from the leaves by increased efficiency of extraction during the night and early morning, so that the plant begins the day with low internal salt content, and the leaf reservoirs become suitable for a new supply. The rejection mechanism at the plant roots and the secretion mechanism at shoots allow the plant to maintain its internal salt content at an approximately constant level despite the great variation in soil salinity.

Brassica rapa L. (rapid-cycling Brassica), was grown in environmentally controlled chambers to determine the interactive effects of ozone (O3) and increased root temperature (RT) on biomass, reproductive output, and photosynthesis. Plants were grown with or without an average treatment of 63 ppb O3. RT treatments were 13°C (LRT) and 18°C (HRT). Air temperatures were 25°C/15°C day/night for all RT treatments.

Ozone affected plant biomass more than did root temperature. Plants in O3 had significantly smaller total plant d. wt, shoot weight, leaf weight, leaf area and leaf number than plants grown without O3. LRT plants tended to have slightly smaller total plant d. wt, shoot weight, root weight, leaf weight, leaf area, and leaf number than HRT plants. For all variables, LRT plants grown in O3 had the smallest biomass, and plants grown in HRT without O3 had the largest biomass.

Ozone reduced both fruit weight and fruit number; LRT also reduced fruit weight but had no effect on fruit number. Ozone reduced photosynthesis but RT had no effect. Conductance and internal CO2 were unaffected by O3 or RT.

These studies indicate that plant growth with LRT might be more reduced in the presence of O3 than growth in plants with HRT, which might be able to compensate for O3-caused reductions in photosynthesis to avoid decreased biomass and reproductive output.

The global emission of ammonia (NH3) is about 54 Mt N. The major global sources are excreta from domestic animals and fertilizers, but oceans, biomass burning and crops are also important. About 60% of the global NH3 emission is estimated to come from anthropogenic sources. NH3-N emissions are of the same order as the NOx-N emissions on both global and European scales. Emitted NH3 returns to the surface mainly in the form of dry deposition of NH3 and wet deposition of ammonium (NH4+). In countries with high NH3 emission densities, dry deposition of NH3 from local sources and wet deposition of NH4+ from remote sources dominate the deposition. In countries with low NH3 emission densities only wet deposition of NH4+ from remote sources dominates the deposition. Surface exchange of NH3 is essentially bi-directional, depending on the NH3 compensation point concentration of the vegetation and the airborne concentration. In general, the compensation point is larger for agricultural than semi-natural plants, and varies with plant growth stage. According to basic thermodynamics the leaf tissue or stomatal compensation point of NH3 doubles for each increase of 5°C. However, exchange of NH3 does not only occur through the stomata, but it can also be deposited to leaf surfaces, as well as emitted back to the atmosphere from drying leaf surfaces. Atmospheric transport and deposition models can be used to interpolate NH3 concentrations and depositions in space and time, to calculate import/export balances and to estimate past or future situations. Adverse effects on sensitive ecosystems caused by high N deposition can be reduced by lowering the emissions and, to a limited extent, also by removing sources close to the ecosystem to be protected.

Leaf sucrose, starch, hexose and maximum extractable soluble acid invertase activity were compared throughout the day in source leaves of 13 plant species chosen for their putative phloem-loading type (apoplastic or symplastic). Four species which represent the different phloem-loading types (tomato, barley, maize and Fuchsia) were studied in detail. Using this information we wished to determine whether a positive correlation between foliar carbohydrates and acid invertase activity exists in leaves from different species and, furthermore, whether this relationship is determined by phloem-loading type. Acid invertase activity was relatively constant throughout the day in all species. The extent of sucrose, hexose and starch accumulation and the sucrose: starch ratio measured at a given time were species-dependent. No correlations were found between foliar soluble acid invertase activity and the hexose, sucrose or starch content of the leaves in any of the species, regardless of phloem-loading type. The species examined could be divided into three distinct groups: (1) high sucrose, low invertase; (2) low sucrose, low invertase; and (3) low sucrose, high invertase. The absence of an inverse relationship between leaf sucrose, hexose or starch contents and endogenous soluble acid invertase suggests that this enzyme is not directly involved in carbon partitioning in leaves but serves an auxiliary function.

We measured the flow of methane in Typha latifolia L. (cattail)-dominated wetlands from microbial production in anoxic sediment into, through, and out of emergent T. latifolia shoots (i.e. plant transport). The purpose was to identify key environmental and plant factors that might affect rates of methane efflux from wetlands to the Earth's atmosphere. Methane accumulated in leafy T. latifolia shoots overnight, reaching concentrations up to 10000 μl l−1 (vs. atmospheric concentrations <4 μl l−1), suggesting that lower stomatal conductance at night limits methane efflux from the plant into ambient air. Daytime light and (or) lower atmospheric humidity that induce convective gas flow through the plant coincided with (a) an increase in the rate of methane efflux from T. latifolia leaves to ambient air (from <0·1 to >2·0 μmol m−2 (leaf) s−1) and (b) a decrease in shoot methane concentration to <70 μl l−1. Very short fluctuation in stomatal conductance during the day did not affect the methane efflux rate unless, possibly, the rate of photosynthesis decreased. A strong relationship between the maximum daily rate of methane efflux and shoot methane concentration (measured before the onset of convective gas flow) suggests T. latifolia plants behave like a capacitor (filling with methane at night, emitting the stored methane during the day). Experimentally cutting leaves (to prevent pressurization) reduced plant capacitance for methane.

Human activity has greatly perturbed the nitrogen cycle through increased fixation by legumes, by energy and fertilizer production, and by the mobilization of N from long-term storage pools. This extra reactive N is readily transported through the environment, and there is increasing evidence that it is changing ecosystems through eutrophication and acidification. Rothamsted Experimental Station, UK has been involved in research on N cycling in ecosystems since its inception in 1843. Measurements of precipitation composition at Rothamsted, made since 1853, show an increase of nitrate and ammonium N in precipitation from 1 and 3 kg N ha−1 yr−1, respectively, in 1855 to a maximum of 8 and 10 kg N ha−1 yr−1 in 1980, decreasing to 4 and 5 kg N ha−1 yr−1 today. Nitrogen inputs via dry deposition do, however, remain high. Recent measurements with diffusion tubes and filter packs show large concentrations of nitrogen dioxide of c. 20 μg m−3 in winter and c. 10 μg m−3 in summer; the difference is linked to the use of central heating, and with variations in wind direction and pollutant source. Concentrations of nitric acid and particulate N exhibit maxima of 1·5 and 2 μg m−3 in summer and winter, respectively. Concentrations of ammonia are small, barely rising above 1 μg m−3.

Taking deposition velocities from the literature gives a total deposition of all measured N species to winter cereals of 43·3 kg N ha−1 yr−1, 84% as oxidized species, 79% dry deposited. The fate of this N deposited to the very long-term Broadbalk Continuous Wheat Experiment at Rothamsted has been simulated using the SUNDIAL N-cycling model: at equilibrium, after 154 yr of the experiment and with N deposition increasing from c. 10 kg ha−1 yr−1 in 1843 to 45 kg ha−1 yr−1 today, c. 5% is leached, 12% is denitrified, 30% immobilized in the soil organic matter and 53% taken off in the crop. The ‘efficiency of use’ of the deposited N decreases, and losses and immobilization increase as the amount of fertilizer N increases. The deposited N itself, and the acidification that is associated with it (from the nitric acid, ammonia and ammonium), has reduced the number of plant species on the 140-yr-old Park Grass hay meadow. It has also reduced methane oxidation rates in soil by c. 15% under arable land and 30% under woodland, and has caused N saturation of local woodland ecosystems: nitrous oxide emission rates of up to 1·4 kg ha−1 yr−1 are equivalent to those from arable land receiving >200 kg N ha−1 yr−1, and in proportion to the excess N deposited; measurements of N cycling processes and pools using 15N pool dilution techniques show a large nitrate pool and enhanced rates of nitrification relative to immobilization. Ratios of gross nitrification[ratio ]gross immobilization might prove to be good indices of N saturation.

Measurements were made of the rates of nitrogenase activity (acetylene reduction) by cyanobacteria collected from the Baltic Sea at 2-h intervals, over a period of 24 h, and incubated under natural light. By relating the chlorophyll-specific rate of N2 fixation (PN) to the mean photon irradiance (I) at different periods, a PN/I curve was constructed. A mathematical description of this relationship was used in the calculation of rates of N2 fixation at different depths and times of day from continuous measurements of surface irradiance and light attenuation. By relating these calculations to the vertical distribution of chlorophyll due to Aphanizomenon flos-aquae, an estimate of the daily integral of N2 fixation by the population of this cyanobacterium was obtained: it varied from 0·39 to 0·71 mmol m−2 with a mean value of 0·53 mmol−2 over 9 d. Comparisons with similar calculations of the daily integral of photosynthesis over the same period indicated the atomic ratio of N/C fixed is about 0·22, not very different from the N/C ratio expected for the elemental composition of these cyanobacteria. It is demonstrated that when buoyant gas-vacuolate colonies float up during calm periods the increased irradiance that they experience supports an increased rate of N2 fixation. This increase is less than that seen for carbon fixation because photosynthesis is negated by respiration at low irradiances and is less inhibited at high irradiances.

Dr Willem Asman concluded that the major global sources of atmospheric NH3 are excreta from domestic animals and fertilizers. A question raised was: how reliable are the emission estimates and extrapolations? The answer was that emission estimates are surrounded by uncertainty, which is a major handicap to sound modelling of NH3 dry deposition and, consequently, to obtaining good estimates of critical load exceedences.

Major uncertainties in emission estimates seem to be related to the use of simple emission factors, many of which are highly empirical or have been derived from measurements carried out under conditions which deviate considerably from those following modern practices of handling and applying manure and fertilizers. An example is provided by the commonly used emission factors for synthetic fertilizers (see e.g. Bouwman et al. (1997)), which are much higher than recent micrometeorological assessments seem to suggest. Thus, emission from urea, the most widespread fertilizer used in the world (currently around 55% of world N consumption) can be completely avoided if the fertilizer is incorporated into the upper soil layers. Similarly, a growing crop can reduce losses to well below 10% of the applied amount of urea-N, i.e. to less than half of the generally used emission factors of 15% for Europe and 25% for the tropics. The emission factor for NPK-fertilizer is set at 4%, whereas that for pure calcium-ammonium-nitrate, the same N compound as is present in NPK-fertilizers, is assumed to be only 2%.

Gene-specific probes were used to assess the expression patterns of four different phenylalanine ammonia-lyase (pal) genes in infected or elicitor-treated leaves and suspension-cultured cells of barley. Genes corresponding to hpal2, hpal3, hpal4, and hpal6 were all induced by mercuric chloride and fungal infection by Bipolaris sorokiniana Sacc. (Shoem.) in barley (Hordeum vulgare L. cv. Pokko) leaves, but with considerable variation in their expression level and timing. The expression patterns of hpal2 and hpal6 were similar, both showing a rapid, strong induction after treatment with mercuric chloride and a slower induction after fungal inoculation, whereas the more divergent hpal3 was induced at a later time and at a lower level after both treatments. Hpal4 was expressed with timing like that of hpal2 and hpal6 in infected or mercuric chloride-treated leaves but its expression was much weaker. Hpal2 and hpal4 were induced in elicitor-treated, suspension-cultured barley cells, whereas the expression of hpal3 was nearly undetectable, and hpal6 was strongly and constitutively present. All pal genes except hpal4 were developmentally regulated, but differentially expressed in various barley tissues. The results suggest that the four pal genes studied here might be responsible for the activation of different branches in the phenylpropanoid biosynthesis of barley.

The effects of full-spectrum solar radiation and of solar radiation deprived of total u.v. radiation (λ<395 nm) on the endemic Mediterranean red alga Rissoella verruculosa (Bertoloni) J. Agardh were studied in situ in early summer, from sunrise to sunset. Photosynthetic performance, pigment content and the activities of enzymes related to nutrient uptake, were monitored under both radiation conditions throughout a daylight period.

The doses of solar radiation, measured on the day during which the experiments were carried out (24 June 1997), were 9228·25, 1109·70 and 13·03 kJ m−2 for PAR (λ=400–700 nm), u.v.-A (λ=315–400 nm) and u.v.-B (λ=280–315 nm), respectively. Under these conditions, a clear daily variation in photosynthetic performance was found. However, no significant differences were detected between the two radiation conditions. At noon, strong sunlight impaired O2 evolution by 75%, but complete recovery occurred during the afternoon, reaching similar values to those measured in the early morning. By contrast, photoinhibition of optimal quantum yield (Fv/Fm), and the relative electron transport rate was followed by only a slight recovery during the afternoon. The rate of photosynthesis in air (simulating emersion conditions), estimated by CO2 exchange, showed a negative balance at noon, which was accentuated in plants exposed to the full-solar spectrum.

Significant changes in the activities of nitrate reductase and carbonic anhydrase were found throughout the day under both radiation conditions. In thalli receiving solar radiation deprived of u.v., total CA activity decreased throughout the day. However, in thalli exposed to full-spectrum solar radiation, the activity of the enzyme tended to increase in the afternoon, correlating with an increase in NR activity.

Cumulative germination curves were recorded for carrot (Daucus carota L.) seeds at a range of constant temperatures (T) and water potentials (Ψ) in the laboratory and under variable soil conditions in 15 seed-bed environments in the field. A single base temperature (Tb), a distribution of base water potentials (Ψb(G)) for percentiles (G) of the population and the hydrothermal time constant (Hg) were determined from laboratory data. Although less effective at low Ψ, it was possible, using these germination parameters, to satisfactorily describe the effect of T and Ψ on germination rates under constant conditions according to the threshold models of thermal and hydrothermal time. These models were applied to field data with the condition that the germination process ceased if T<Tb for thermal time and additionally Ψ<Ψb(G) for hydrothermal time.

Neither model accurately predicted germination patterns in the field. However, the pattern of germination was adequately described in most situations by a modified threshold model in which the predicted progress towards germination was unaffected by soil Ψ, provided it remained above Ψb(G), and was therefore more rapid under variable seed bed conditions than hydrothermal time. In this modified threshold model, the condition Ψ<Ψb(G) had to be fulfilled at the initiation of radicle extension before germination occurred. This result implies that the initiation of radicle growth operates as a moisture-sensitive step that can determine germination and seedling emergence timing under variable soil-moisture conditions.

Seedling emergence was also recorded in the field and used to determine, separately, the impact of germination and post-germination growth on the variation in seedling emergence patterns. The analysis suggests that delays in seedling emergence occur largely in the germination phase, but that seedling losses and variation in the spread of seedling emergence times within the population occur largely during the post-germination growth phase.

Dry deposition of NH3 and NOx (NO and NO2) can affect plant metabolism at the cellular and whole-plant level. Gaseous pollutants enter the plant mainly through the stomata, and once in the apoplast NH3 dissolves to form NH4+, whereas NO2 dissolves to form NO3− and NO2−. The latter compound can also be formed after exposure to NO. There is evidence that NH3-N and NOx-N can be reversibly stored in the apoplast. Temporary storage might affect processes such as absorption rate, assimilation and re-emission. Once formed, NO3− and NO2− can be reduced, and NH4+ can be assimilated via the normal enzymatic pathways, nitrate reductase (NR), nitrite reductase and the glutamine synthetase/glutamate synthase (GS/GOGAT) cycle. Fumigation with low concentrations of atmospheric NH3 increases in vitro glutamine synthetase activity, but whether this involves both or only one of the GS isoforms is still an open question. There seems to be no correlation between fumigation with low concentrations of NH3 and in vitro GDH activity. The contribution of atmospheric NH3 and NO2 deposition to the N budget of the whole plant has been calculated for various atmospheric pollutant concentrations and relative growth rates (RGRs). It is concluded that at current ambient atmospheric N concentrations the direct impact of gaseous N uptake by foliage on plant growth is generally small.

Ascospore germination, thallus initiation, and areole and prothallus development in the lichen Rhizocarpon lecanorinum Anders were examined using light, fluorescence and scanning electron microscopy. The ascospore germ hyphae remain very short and do not form a prothallus-like mycelium. Instead, a compact soredium-like granule develops directly from sporeling contact with a compatible species of Trebouxia. Diffuse initial stages involving non-trebouxioid algae are lacking. The onset of thallus differentiation is marked by the deposition of rhizocarpic acid in an incipient cortical layer within the apical part of the granule. As pigmentation and cortex-formation transform this structure into a typical areole, radiating prothallus hyphae are simultaneously initiated from its basal margin. Most areoles formed subsequently in the marginal prothallus lack subtending melanized hyphae and apparently stem from overgrowth by the prothallus of photobiont cells on, or in, the substratum. Apothecia reach maturity in thalli as small as 2 mm in diameter. It is proposed that the lack of diffuse hyphal growth in sporelings and telescoped morphogenesis of R. lecanorinum are part of a life history strategy geared to precocious, heavy investment in ascospore production. The R. lecanorinum–Trebouxia symbiosis has a number of features which make it well-suited for further studies of the life history and development of prothallus-forming crustose lichens with sexually reproducing mycobionts.

The cyanobacterial symbionts in some Nostoc-containing lichens were investigated using the nucleotide sequence of the highly variable cyanobacterial tRNALeu (UAA) intron. When comparing different Nostoc-containing lichens, identical intron sequences were found in different samples of the same lichen species collected from two remote areas. This was true for all species where this comparison was made (Peltigera aphthosa (L.) Willd., P. canina (L.) Willd. and Nephroma arcticum (L.) Torss.). With one exception, a specific intron sequence was never found in more than one lichen species. However, for two of the species, Peltigera aphthosa and Nephroma arcticum, two different cyanobionts were found in different samples. By examining a P. aphthosa photosymbiodeme it could be shown that the same Nostoc is present in both bipartite and tripartite lobes of this lichen. It is thus possible for one cyanobiont/Nostoc to form the physiologically different symbioses that are found in bipartite and tripartite lichens. The connection between photobiont identity and secondary chemistry is discussed, as a correlation between differences in secondary chemistry and different cyanobionts/Nostocs in the species Peltigera neopolydactyla (Gyeln.) Gyeln. was observed. It is concluded that more knowledge concerning the photobiont will give us valuable information on many aspects of lichen biology.

The study characterized the influence of cucumber mosaic virus (CMV) on the growth response of two annual weeds to nitrogen. Plants were grown individually along a N gradient from 4 to 32 mmol l−1 and data were interpreted using growth analysis. Plant biomass increased with N concentration and was significantly higher for healthy than infected plants at the two highest N concentrations. Healthy plants of Portulaca oleracea L. were characterized by lower biomass allocation to leaves and higher biomass allocation to roots than infected plants; no change in biomass allocation was recorded for Stellaria media Vill. Relative growth rate (rgr), net assimilation rate (nar) and specific leaf area (sla) of plants increased with increasing N concentration. Healthy plants of P. oleracea were characterized by a higher rgr and nar and a lower sla than infected plants, whereas healthy S. media had a higher rgr but a similar nar and sla or leaf weight ratio (lwr) compared with infected plants. The consequences of these results on the population dynamics of weeds and virus spread are discussed.

Concentrations of NH4+, NO3−, PO43−, K+, Ca2+ and Mg2+ in snow meltwater resulting from summer snow showers were monitored before and after its passage through monospecific stands of the Antarctic macrolichen Usnea sphacelata R. Br. The sampling was conducted under field conditions near Casey Station in East Antarctica between January and March. Total snow deposition during the 61-d period was 44±1 mm (rainfall equivalent depth) delivering 362±10, 87±2 and 9±1 μmol m−2 of NH4+, NO3− and PO43−, respectively. Meltwater that had percolated through U. sphacelata was depleted in NH4+ and NO3− equating with a retention by the lichen of 87 and 92%, respectively, of the total wet deposition of these ions. Lichen-modified meltwater was slightly enriched in PO43−, but because the volume of the lichen percolate was smaller than that of the original snow deposition, the lichen achieved a net gain of 9% of the total P deposited. Lichen percolate was also enriched in metal cations. Potassium loss associated with the melting of the heaviest snowfall (18 mm) was equivalent to only 0·05% of the total K in the lichen suggesting that ion loss did not signal significant cellular damage. There was also a progressive increase in NH4+ concentration in unmodified meltwater from 3 to 21 nmol ml−1 over a 3-d period whereas levels in the lichen-modified meltwater remained unchanged at [les ]4 nmol ml−1. This enrichment in NH4+ might have resulted from dry deposition onto the melting snow pack of NH3 emitted from nearby penguin rookeries. During the study, tagged thalli of U. sphacelata made a 2% loss in dry mass although they appeared healthy and, at the end of the study, showed an effective quantum yield (ΔF/Fm′) comparable with field material. The results are discussed in relation to the time of year that is likely to be most suitable for lichen growth in this continental Antarctic environment and the potential growth-led demand for N in U. sphacelata.

High loads of nitrogen to spruce and beech forests can result in a complete inhibition of NO3− uptake by the roots of the trees. This conclusion is based on (a) a comparison of a field site continuously exposed to high loads of N and a N-limited site, (b) the results of N fertilization of a N-limited field site, and (c) laboratory experiments under controlled environmental conditions. From fertilization experiments in the field it appears that NH4+ uptake might become inhibited subsequent to an excessive uptake of NH4+. Apparently, the inhibition of NO3− uptake by high loads of N to forests is a consequence of an accumulation of organic amino compounds in the roots originating from phloem transport from the shoot to the roots. These amino compounds seem to signal the N demand of the shoot to the roots. At present this function cannot be attributed to an individual organic amino compound in beech or spruce, but Gln is a likely candidate in both species among other compounds, e.g. Glu in spruce or Asp in beech trees. Direct inhibition of NO3− uptake by NH4+ can be excluded from the present studies. The mechanism(s) by which elevated levels of particular organic amino compounds interact with NO3− uptake remains to be elucidated. This (these) mechanism(s) seem to affect NO3− influx rather than NO3− efflux. As a consequence of this (these) mechanism(s), spruce and beech trees can prevent, within a certain physiological window, N over-nutrition when the roots are exposed to excessive amounts of inorganic N. However, inhibition of NO3− and NH4+ uptake by the roots makes more N available for leaching into the ground water and, in addition, for soil microbial processes that result in the production and re-emission of volatile N compounds into the atmosphere.

At the ‘Höglwald’ site, continuously exposed to high loads of N, >20% of the N input from throughfall into the spruce and beech plots is re-emitted as NO and N2O. However, the NO to N2O ratio is highly dependent on the tree species, with a preference for NO in the spruce and a preference for N2O in the beech plot. Since at least part of the NO emitted from the soil will be converted inside the canopy in the presence of ozone to NO2 that might then be absorbed by the leaves, the portion of the N in the throughfall that will be released from the forest by gaseous N emission is higher in the beech than in the spruce plot. Leaching of NO3− into the ground water is high in the spruce, but minute in the beech plot. However, this positive effect of beech on ground water quality is achieved at the expense of an enhanced release of radiatively active N gases into the troposphere.

Diel (24-h) time courses of CO2 exchange, water relations, and microclimate of the foliose lichen, Sticta tomentosa (Swartz) Ach., and responses to experimentally manipulated conditions were measured at a forest edge in a lower montane rainforest in Panama.

Similar to earlier observations on two other rain forest lichens, daily desiccation suppressed net photosynthesis (NP) during the period when irradiation was highest. Not surprisingly, the light response curves of NP showed saturation at rather low light levels. Rehydration was associated with an initial resaturation burst of short duration, which could be demonstrated both under natural conditions and experimentally. This additional loss of CO2 seems too low to be ecologically relevant. Moreover, high thallus hydration was also detrimental to NP: at maximum water content net CO2 uptake was depressed by >50%. Although NP was well adapted to the prevailing high temperatures, the latter also stimulated dark respiration. On average, almost 60% of the diurnal carbon gain was lost during the night.

In spite of these limitations, the integrated 24-h C gain was quite high, on average 0·5% of the thallus C content. Whilst these figures were determined for horizontally exposed samples, we also assessed the role of different exposures on photosynthetic performance. Diel C gain was highest under conditions of semi-shade (westerly exposure), which allowed long periods of activity, whilst much higher irradiance at other exposures could not be utilized for photosynthetic production: easterly exposed thalli dried out even faster than horizontally exposed samples.

The frequent co-occurrence of ectomycorrhizas and arbuscular mycorrhizas in the same ecosystem raises the question about how two functionally different mycorrhizal associations exploit a spatially heterogeneous habitat. Horizontal (in plots along a transect of 3750 m crossing forest types of low and high abundance of ectomycorrhizal (ECM) host species) and vertical (across profiles of litter and 0–5 cm, 10–15 cm, 25–35 cm soil layers) distribution of ectomycorrhizas and arbuscular mycorrhizas in relation to edaphic parameters (pH, moisture, total carbon, total nitrogen and extractable-phosphorus concentration) was compared in Korup National Park rain forest, to test the hypothesis that the two types of mycorrhiza exploit different niches. No pattern was observed in either ECM or arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) fractional colonization with depth in the profile even though most of the variation in soil parameters was vertical. Only local (between monoliths within plots) horizontal differences were found in soil parameters. By contrast, horizontal differences in fractional colonization were found between forest types, and between monoliths, for ectomycorrhizas but only between monoliths for arbuscular mycorrhizas. The lack of a clear relationship between both horizontal and vertical distribution of ECM and AM fractional colonization and soil parameters suggests that both fungal groups are equally able to colonize the same niche, at the scale of our experiment. By contrast, a negative relationship was found between AM and ECM fractional colonization in the litter and 0–5 cm and 10–15 cm soil layers. This, in addition to the more heterogeneous horizontal distribution of arbuscular mycorrhizas in forest areas dominated by ectomycorrhizas and a patchy vertical distribution of the former as opposed to a more coherent distribution of the latter, suggests that both types of mycorrhizal fungi compete for the same niche. The co-occurrence of ectomycorrhizas and arbuscular mycorrhizas might be explained by differences between ECM and AM hosts and fungi in their colonizing abilities.
