We consider the semilinear problem

where λ is a positive parameter and f has exponential critical growth. We first establish the existence of a non-zero weak solution. Then, by assuming that f is odd, we prove that the number of solutions increases when the parameter λ becomes large. In the proofs we apply variational methods in a suitable weighted Sobolev space consisting of functions with rapid decay at infinity.

The result of dividing the alternant |aαbβcγ…| by the simplest alternant |a0b1c2…| (the difference-product of a, b, c, …) is known to be a symmetric function expressible in two distinct ways, (1) as a determinant having for elements the elementary symmetric functions C, of a, b, c, …, (2) as a determinant having for elements the complete homogeneous symmetric functions Hr. Let N be an arbitrary near-ring. Each element a ∈ N determines in a natural way a new multiplication on the elements of N which results in a near-ring Na whose additive group coincides with that of N but whose multiplicative semigroup generally differs. Specifically, we define the product x * y of two elements in Na by x * y = x a y where a product in the original near-ring is denoted by juxtaposition. One easily checks that Na is a near-ring with addition identical to that of N. The original near-ring N will be referred to as the base near-ring, Na will be referred to as a laminated near-ring of N and a will be referred to as the laminating element or sometimes more simply as the laminator.

We are concerned here with question: to what extent can the structure of a group G be recaptured from information about the structure of its group of automorphismsAut G? For example, one might try to find all groups which have some specific group astheir (full) automorphism group, a point of view adopted by Iyer in a recent paper [5]. Nothing is known about this question in general except the result of Nagrebeckü [7] that there are only finitely many finite groups with a given group as automorphismgroup.

Arazy has characterized the isometries of p, (0 < p ≦ ∞, p ≠ 2) onto itself as all maps of the form X↦UXV where U and V are either both unitary or both anti-unitary. A simple proof of this result is given.

Let S denote a compact semitopological semigroup (i.e. the multiplication is separately continuous) and P(S) the set of probability measures on S. Then P(S) is a compact semitopological semigroup under convolution and the weak * topology (4). Let Γ be a subsemigroup of P(S) and where supp μ is the support of μ ∈P(S). In the case in which S is commutative it was shown by Glicksberg in (4) that S(Γ) is an algebraic group in S if Γ is an algebraic group. For a general semigroup S, Pym (7) considered Γ = {η}, η being an idempotent, and established that S(Γ) is a topologically simple subsemigroup of S, i.e. every ideal of S(Γ) is dense in S(Γ). In this note we prove that if Γ is a simple subsemigroup of P(S) (a semigroup is simple if it contains no proper ideal) which contains an idempotent then S(Γ) is a topologically simple subsemigroup of S. We also give an example to show that our conclusion (hence also Pym's) is best possible in the sense that S(Γ) is not simple in general

Let S be a free semigroup (on any set of generators). When S is given the discrete topology, its Stone-Čech compactification has a natural semigroup structure. We give two results about elements p of finite order in βS. The first is that any continuous homomorphism of βS into any compact group must send p to the identity. The second shows that natural extensions, to elements of finite order, of relationships between idempotents and sequences with distinct finite sums, do not hold.

In this paper a characterization of the regular ω-semigroups whose congruence lattice is modular is given. The characterization obtained for such semigroups generalizes the one given by Munn for bisimple ω-semigroups and completes a result of Baird dealing with the modularity of the sublattice of the congruence lattice of a simple regular ω-semigroup consisting of congruences which are either idempotent separating or group congruences.

A terrace for $\mathbb{Z}_m$ is a particular type of sequence formed from the $m$ elements of $\mathbb{Z}_m$. For $m$ odd, many procedures are available for constructing power-sequence terraces for $\mathbb{Z}_m$; each terrace of this sort may be partitioned into segments, of which one contains merely the zero element of $\mathbb{Z}_m$, whereas every other segment is either a sequence of successive powers of an element of $\mathbb{Z}_m$ or such a sequence multiplied throughout by a constant. We now refine this idea to show that, for $m=n-1$, where $n$ is an odd prime power, there are many ways in which power-sequences in $\mathbb{Z}_n$ can be used to arrange the elements of $\mathbb{Z}_n\setminus\{0\}$ in a sequence of distinct entries $i$, $1\le i\le m$, usually in two or more segments, which becomes a terrace for $\mathbb{Z}_m$ when interpreted modulo $m$ instead of modulo $n$. Our constructions provide terraces for $\mathbb{Z}_{n-1}$ for all prime powers $n$ satisfying $0\ltn\lt300$ except for $n=125$, $127$ and $257$.

Two subgroups A and B of a group G are said to be totally completely conditionally permutable (tcc-permutable) in G if X permutes with Yg for some g ∊ 〈X, Y〉, for all X ≤ A and Y ≤ B. We study the belonging of a finite product of tcc-permutable subgroups to a saturated formation of soluble groups containing all finite supersoluble groups.

We study reflexivity and structural properties of operator algebras generated by representations of the discrete Heisenberg semigroup. We show that the left regular representation of this semigroup gives rise to a semi-simple reflexive algebra. We exhibit an example of a representation that gives rise to a non-reflexive algebra. En route, we establish reflexivity results for subspaces of .

We extend an affine-invariant inequality for vector polynomials established by Dendrinos and Wright to general rational functions. As a consequence we obtain sharp universal estimates for various problems in Euclidean harmonic analysis defined with respect to the so-called affine arc-length measure.

A simple Steinberg algebra associated to an ample Hausdorff groupoid G is algebraically purely infinite if and only if the characteristic functions of compact open subsets of the unit space are infinite idempotents. If a simple Steinberg algebra is algebraically purely infinite, then the reduced groupoid $C^*$-algebra $C^*_r(G)$ is simple and purely infinite. But the Steinberg algebra seems too small for the converse to hold. For this purpose we introduce an intermediate *-algebra B(G) constructed using corners $1_U C^*_r(G) 1_U$ for all compact open subsets U of the unit space of the groupoid. We then show that if G is minimal and effective, then B(G) is algebraically properly infinite if and only if $C^*_r(G)$ is purely infinite simple. We apply our results to the algebras of higher-rank graphs.

Following some remarks made by O'Grady and Oguiso, the potential density of rational points on the second punctual Hilbert scheme of certain K3 surfaces is proved.

We prove that every endomorphism of an infinite-dimensional vector space over a field splits into the sum of four idempotents and into the sum of four square-zero endomorphisms, a result that is optimal in general.
