Let $S \subset \mathbb {R}^{n}$ be a smooth compact hypersurface with a strictly positive second fundamental form, $E$ be the Fourier extension operator on $S$, and $X$ be a Lebesgue measurable subset of $\mathbb {R}^{n}$. If $X$ contains a ball of each radius, then the problem of determining the range of exponents $(p,q)$ for which the estimate $\| Ef \|_{L^{q}(X)} \lesssim \| f \|_{L^{p}(S)}$ holds is equivalent to the restriction conjecture. In this paper, we study the estimate under the following assumption on the set $X$: there is a number $0 < \alpha \leq n$ such that $|X \cap B_R| \lesssim R^{\alpha }$ for all balls $B_R$ in $\mathbb {R}^{n}$ of radius $R \geq 1$. On the left-hand side of this estimate, we are integrating the function $|Ef(x)|^{q}$ against the measure $\chi _X \,{\textrm {d}}x$. Our approach consists of replacing the characteristic function $\chi _X$ of $X$ by an appropriate weight function $H$, and studying the resulting estimate in three different regimes: small values of $\alpha$, intermediate values of $\alpha$, and large values of $\alpha$. In the first regime, we establish the estimate by using already available methods. In the second regime, we prove a weighted Hölder-type inequality that holds for general non-negative Lebesgue measurable functions on $\mathbb {R}^{n}$ and combine it with the result from the first regime. In the third regime, we borrow a recent fractal Fourier restriction theorem of Du and Zhang and combine it with the result from the second regime. In the opposite direction, the results of this paper improve on the Du–Zhang theorem in the range $0 < \alpha < n/2$.

We describe the linear surjective isometries between various subalgebras of uniformly continuous bounded functions defined on closed subsets of Banach spaces.

We show that in the classical (fixed-monomer-concentration) Becker–Döring equations truncated at finite cluster size, the slow evolution (metastability) of solutions can be explained in terms of the eigensystem of this linear ordinary differential equation (ODE) system. In particular, for a common choice of coagulation–fragmentation rate constants there is an extremely small non-zero eigenvalue which is isolated from the rest of the spectrum. We give estimates and bounds on the size of this eigenvalue, the gap between it and the second smallest, and the size of the largest eigenvalue. The bounds on the smallest eigenvalue are very sharp when the system size and/or monomer concentration are large enough.

We answer a question of Masser by showing that for the Weierstrass zeta function ζ corresponding to a given lattice Λ, the density of algebraic points of absolute multiplicative height bounded by T and degree bounded by k lying on the graph of ζ, restricted to an appropriate domain, does not exceed c(log T)15 for an effective constant c > 0 depending on k and on Λ. Using different methods, we also give two bounds of the same form for the density of algebraic points of bounded height in a fixed number field lying on the graph of ζ restricted to an appropriate subset of (0, 1). In one case the constant c can be shown not to depend on the choice of lattice; in the other, the exponent can be improved to 12.

McAlister proved that every regular locally inverse semigroup can be covered by a regular Rees matrix semigroup over an inverse semigroup by means of a homomorphism which is locally an isomorphism. We generalize this result to the class of semigroups with local units whose local submonoids have commuting idempotents and possessing what we term a ‘McAlister sandwich function’.

Inspired by the results of Adin, Postnikov and Roichman, we propose combinatorial Gelfand models for semigroup algebras of some finite semigroups, which include the symmetric inverse semigroup, the dual symmetric inverse semigroup, the maximal factorizable subsemigroup in the dual symmetric inverse semigroup and the factor power of the symmetric group. Furthermore, we extend the Gelfand model for the semigroup algebras of the symmetric inverse semigroup to a Gelfand model for the q-rook monoid algebra.

Montel introduced the concept of quasi-normal families $f:\varOmega\to\mathbb{C}$ in 1922: $\mathcal{F}$ is quasi-normal of order $N$ if every sequence $\{f_n\}$ from $\mathcal{F}$ has a subsequence which converges uniformly on compact subsets of $\varOmega\setminus Z^\dagger$, where $Z^\dagger\subset\varOmega$ contains at most $N\in\mathbb{N}$ elements. ($\mathcal{F}$ is of order $N:=\infty$ if every such exceptional set $Z^\dagger$ is finite.) The problem is that $Z^\dagger$ normally depends on the subsequence. So even if every sequence has a subsequence which converges to a given function $f$ in $\varOmega$ except at $N$ points, the sequence itself may not converge in any domain $D\subseteq\varOmega$.

In this paper we introduce the concept of general convergence. Indeed, $\{f_n\}$ above converges generally to $f$. We also introduce a related concept, restrained sequences, and study some of their properties. The definitions extend earlier concepts introduced for sequences of linear fractional transformations.

In a recent paper Segel (1) points out that the diverse techniques (which “comprise the core of the applied mathematicians art (or craft)”) of the applied mathematician, although in general reliably proven, are “rarely explicitly delineated but rather are transmitted indirectly and informally”. In his article Segel aims to clarify two such techniques, namely:

(i) Scaling—or how to choose dimensionless variables in such a way that the relative size of the various terms in an equation is explicitly indicated by the magnitudes of the dimensionless parameters which precede them,

(ii) Simplification—a procedure in which a term is neglected under the assumption that it is small, and the consistency of the assumption checked later.

We construct certain elements in the motivic cohomology group $H^3_{\mathcal{M}}(E\times E',\mathbb{Q}(2))$, where $E$ and $E'$ are elliptic curves over $\mathbb{Q}$. When $E$ is not isogenous to $E'$ these elements are analogous to circular units in real quadratic fields, as they come from modular parametrizations of the elliptic curves. We then find an analogue of the class-number formula for real quadratic fields, which specializes to the usual quadratic class-number formula when $E$ and $E'$ are quadratic twists.

We study the relationship between the dual of the K-space defined by means of a polygon and the J-space generated by the dual N-tuple. The results complete the research started in [4]. Special attention is paid to the case when the N-tuple is formed by Banach lattices

Let m, n be positive integers, let υ be a multilinear commutator word and let w = υm. We prove that if G is a locally graded group in which all w-values are n-Engel, then the verbal subgroup w(G) is locally nilpotent.

Let d(c) denote the Hausdorff dimension of the Julia set Jc of the polynomial fc (z) = z 2 +c. The function c ↦ d(c) is real-analytic on the interval (–3/4, 1/4), which is in the domain bounded by the main cardioid of the Mandelbrot set. We prove that the function d is convex close to 1/4 on the left side of it.

We consider a nonlinear Robin problem for the Poisson equation in an unbounded periodically perforated domain. The domain has a periodic structure, and the size of each cell is determined by a positive parameter δ. The relative size of each periodic perforation is determined by a positive parameter ε. Under suitable assumptions, such a problem admits a family of solutions which depends on ε and δ. We analyse the behaviour the energy integral of such a family as (ε, δ) tends to (0, 0) by an approach that represents an alternative to asymptotic expansions and classical homogenization theory.

In this note we intend to discuss the method of A. Córdoba and R. Fefferman of using covering lemmas to control maximal functions, and make some simplifications which allow us to obtain alternative proofs of some of their results.

The purpose of this article is to give a local mean value theorem in the complex plane. We show that there is at least one point z satisfying (1), which we will call a mean value point, near z1 and z0 but not necessarily on the segment joining them, provided z1 and z0 are sufficiently close. The proof uses Rouché's Theorem (1).

It is well known that the square matrix, of rank n−k + 1,

In this paper we shall show in a particular case that this is so, and in the case in question we shall exhibit the matrix Z explicitly. Application of this is made to find the classical canonical form of a rational integral function of a square matrix A.

We prove that every incidence graph of a finite projective plane allows a partitioning into incident point-line pairs. This is used to determine the order of the identity in the K0-group of so-called polygonal algebras associated with cocompact group actions on Ã2-buildings with three orbits. These C*-algebras are classified by the K0-group and the class of the identity in K0. To be more precise, we show that 2(q − 1) = 0, where q is the order of the links of the building. Furthermore, if q = 22l−1 with l ∈ ℤ, then the order of is q − 1.

Using the $H^{\infty }$-functional calculus for quaternionic operators, we show how to generate the fractional powers of some densely defined differential quaternionic operators of order $m\geq 1$, acting on the right linear quaternionic Hilbert space $L^{2}(\Omega,\mathbb {C}\otimes \mathbb {H})$.
