In this paper we extend the results of Garba [1] on IOn, the semigroup of all partial one-one order-preserving maps on Xn = {1,…, n}, to POn, the semigroup of all partial order-preserving maps on Xn, A description of the subsemigroup of POn generated by the set N of all its nilpotent elements is given. The set {α∈POn:lim α/≦r and |Xn /dom α|≧r} is shown to be contained in 〈N〉 if and only if r≦½n. The depth of 〈N〉, which is the unique k for which 〈N〉 = N ∪ N2 ∪…∪ Nk and 〈N〉 ≠ N ∪ N2 ∪…∪Nk−1 is shown to be equal to 3 for all n≧3. The rank of the subsemigroup {α∈POπ|imα|≦/n − 2 and α∈〈N〉} is shown to be equal to 6(n − 2), and its nilpotent rank to be equal to 7n−15.

Without prior assumptions about growth, fundamental inequalities for the Taylor series of an entire function are obtained, valid outside a certain exceptional set. The results are vacuous or not depending on the estimate for the exceptional set. Only then does the growth of the function enter.

The loop homology ring of an oriented closed manifold, defined by Chas and Sullivan, is interpreted as a fibrewise homology Pontrjagin ring. The basic structure, particularly the commutativity of the loop multiplication and the homotopy invariance, is explained from the viewpoint of the fibrewise theory, and the definition is extended to arbitrary compact manifolds.

The theorem which I propose to establish first attracted my attention while I was turning over the pages of a volume of Cayley's Collected Mathematical Papers (Cayley, 1). The enunciation of the theorem (with no attempt towards a proof) had been published earlier by Kirkman (3) in a lengthy paper on combinatorial analysis (one of the three-score papers of which Kirkman was the author); among the topics discussed in this paper was the enumeration of the total number of different ways D(r, k) in which a (convex) polygon of r sides can be dissected into k+l parts by drawing k non-intersecting diagonals (i.e., no two diagonals may cross each other except at a vertex or outside the polygon).

Let M be an essentially finitely generated injective (or, more generally, quasi-continuous) module. It is shown that if M satisfies a mild uniqueness condition on essential closures of certain submodules, then the existence of an infinite independent set of submodules of M implies the existence of a larger independent set on some quotient of M modulo a directed union of direct summands. This provides new characterisations of injective (or quasi-continuous) modules of finite Goldie dimension. These results are then applied to the study of indecomposable decompositions of quasi-continuous modules and nonsingular CS modules.

In this paper we consider the quartic diophantine equation 3(y2 – 1) = 2x2(x2 – 1) in integers x and y. We show that this equation does not have any other solutions (x, y) with x≧0 than those given by x = 0,1,2,3,6,91. Two approaches are emphasized, one based on diophantine approximation techniques, the other depends on the structure of certain quartic number fields.

Let T be a unitary operator on a complex Hilbert space ℋ, and X, Y be finite subsets of ℋ. We give a necessary and sufficient condition for TZ(X): {Tnx: n ∈ Z, x ∈ X} to be a Riesz basis of its closed linear span 〈TZ(X)〉. If TZ(X) and TZ(Y) are Riesz bases, and 〈TZ(X)〉⊂〈TZ(Y)〉, then X is extendable to X′ such that TZ(X′) is a Riesz basis of TZ(Y) The proof provides an algorithm for the construction of Riesz bases for the orthogonal complement of 〈TZ(X)〉 in 〈TZ(Y)〉. In the case X consists of a single B-spline, the algorithm gives a natural and quick construction of the spline wavelets of Chui and Wang [2, 3]. Further, the duality principle of Chui and Wang in [3] and [4] is put in the general setting of biorthogonal Riesz bases in Hilbert space.

Following (1) we say that a subgroup H of a group G is almost subnormal in G if H is of finite index in some subnormal subgroup of G, or, equivalently, if |Hn : H| is finite for some n, where Hn is the n-th term of the normal closure series of H in G. The aim of this article is to prove, in answer to a question of R. Baer, the following analogue of the well known result of Roseblade and Stonehewer (3) that in any group the join of a pair of finitely generated subnormal subgroups is always subnormal:

We introduce a notion of Koszul A∞-algebra that generalizes Priddy's notion of a Koszul algebra and we use it to construct small A∞-algebra models for Hochschild cochains. As an application, this yields new techniques for computing free loop space homology algebras of manifolds that are either formal or coformal (over a field or over the integers). We illustrate these techniques in two examples.

Pseudo-Riemannian manifolds with parallel Weyl tensor that are not conformally flat or locally symmetric, also known as essentially conformally symmetric (ECS) manifolds, have a natural local invariant, the rank, which equals 1 or 2, and is the rank of a certain distinguished null parallel distribution $\mathcal{D}$. All known examples of compact ECS manifolds are of rank one and have dimensions greater than 4. We prove that a compact rank-one ECS manifold, if not locally homogeneous, replaced when necessary by a twofold isometric covering, must be a bundle over the circle with leaves of $\mathcal{D}^\perp$ serving as the fibres. The same conclusion holds in the locally homogeneous case if one assumes that $\,\mathcal{D}^\perp$ has at least one compact leaf. We also show that in the pseudo-Riemannian universal covering space of any compact rank-one ECS manifold, the leaves of $\mathcal{D}^\perp$ are the factor manifolds of a global product decomposition.

We define the notion of diffractive geodesic for a polygonal billiard or, more generally, for a Euclidean surface with conical singularities. We study the local geometry of the set of such geodesics of given length and we relate it to a number that we call classical complexity. This classical complexity is then computed for any diffractive geodesic. As an application we describe the set of periodic diffractive geodesics as well as the symplectic aspects of the ‘diffracted flow’.

Let S2n+1{p} denote the homotopy fibre of the degree p self map of S2n+1. For primes p ≥ 5, work by Selick shows that S2n+1{p} admits a non-trivial loop space decomposition if and only if n = 1 or p. Indecomposability in all but these dimensions was obtained by showing that a non-trivial decomposition of ΩS2n+1{p} implies the existence of a p-primary Kervaire invariant one element of order p in $\pi _{2n(p-1)-2}^S$. We prove the converse of this last implication and observe that the homotopy decomposition problem for ΩS2n+1{p} is equivalent to the strong p-primary Kervaire invariant problem for all odd primes. For p = 3, we use the 3-primary Kervaire invariant element θ3 to give a new decomposition of ΩS55{3} analogous to Selick's decomposition of ΩS2p+1{p} and as an application prove two new cases of a long-standing conjecture stating that the fibre of the double suspension $S^{2n-1} \longrightarrow \Omega ^2S^{2n+1}$ is homotopy equivalent to the double loop space of Anick's space.

If F is a (commutative) field let denote the class of all groups G such that every irreducible FG-module has finite dimension over F. The introduction to [7] contains motivation for considering these classes and surveys some of the results to date concerning them. In [7] for every field F we determined the finitely generated soluble groups in . Here, for fields F of characteristic zero, we determine, at least in principle, the soluble groups in . Our main result is the following.

Let X be a real or complex Banach space with norm ∥·∥· Let G denote the set of all isometric automorphisms on X. Then G is a bounded subgroup of the group of all invertible operators GL(X) in B(X). We shall call G the group of isometries with respect to the norm ∥·∥· A bounded subgroup of GL(X) is said to be maximal if it is not contained in any larger bounded subgroup. The Banach space X has maximal norm if G is maximal. Hilbert spaces have maximal norm. For the (real or complex) spaces c0, lp (1≦p<∞), Lp[0,1] (1≦p<∞), Pelczynski and Rolewicz have shown that the standard norms are maximal ([3], pp. 252–265). In finite dimensional spaces the only maximal groups of isometries are the groups of orthogonal transformations. Given any bounded group H in B(X), X can be renormed equivalently so that each T∈H is an isometry, by ‖x‖1=sup{|Tx‖; T∈H}. Therefore corresponding to every maximal subgroup G there is at least one maximal norm for which G is the group of isometries. In this paper we shall investigate those maximal groups G for which there is only one maximal norm with G as its group of isometries.

Extriangulated categories were introduced by Nakaoka and Palu to give a unification of properties in exact categories and extension-closed subcategories of triangulated categories. A notion of tilting pairs in an extriangulated category is introduced in this paper. We give a Bazzoni characterization of tilting pairs in this setting. We also obtain the Auslander–Reiten correspondence of tilting pairs which classifies finite $\mathcal {C}$-tilting subcategories for a certain self-orthogonal subcategory $\mathcal {C}$ with some assumptions. This generalizes the known results given by Wei and Xi for the categories of finitely generated modules over Artin algebras, thereby providing new insights in exact and triangulated categories.
