This review covers four current questions in the behavior of the atomic and molecular interstellar medium. These include whether the atomic gas originates primarily in cold streams or hot flows onto galaxies; what the filling factor of cold gas actually is in galactic regions observationally determined to be completely molecular; whether molecular hydrogen determines or merely traces star formation; and whether gravity or turbulence drives the dynamical motions observed in interstellar clouds, with implications on their star formation properties.

Active gas accretion onto the Milky Way is observed in an object called the Smith Cloud, which contains several million solar masses of neutral and warm ionized gas and is currently losing material to the Milky Way, adding angular momentum to the disk. It is several kpc in size and its tip lies 2 kpc below the Galactic plane. It appears to have no stellar counterpart, but could contain a stellar population like that of the dwarf galaxy Leo P. There are suggestions that its existence and survival require that it be embedded in a dark matter halo of a few 108 solar masses.

At a distance of 61 kpc, the Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC) affords an absolutely unique view of the low metallicity star-forming interstellar medium, providing the nearest laboratory to study processes relevant to star formation at high redshifts. We present new ALMA 7m-array maps of CO and 12CO (2-1) for one of the four observed regions in the Southwest Bar of the SMC. These maps are the first high-resolution (~6″ ~ 1.7 pc) images of CO in a molecular cloud at 1/5 Solar metallicity. We show the structure of photodissociation regions for the first time at 1/5 Solar metallicity by combining the new ALMA data with Herschel maps of [C ii] and [O i]. We present preliminary evidence that there is extended, faint 12CO (2-1) emission near where we expect the Hi-to-H2 transition. We also compare our data to the low metallicity 3D simulations by Glover & Mac Low (2011) and Shetty et al. (2011).

It is now well established that chemistry in external galaxies is rich and complex. In this review I will explore whether one can use molecular emissions to determine their physical conditions. There are several considerations to bear in mind when using molecular emission, and in particular molecular ratios, to determine the densities, temperatures and energetics of a galaxy, which I will briefly summarise here. I will then present an example of a study that uses multiple chemical and radiative transfer analyses in order to tackle the too often neglected ‘degeneracies’ implicit in the interpretation of molecular ratios and show that only via such analyses combined with multi-species and multi-lines high spatial resolution data one can truly make molecules into powerful diagnostics of the evolution and distribution of molecular gas.

Molecular gas is the raw material for star formation and is commonly traced by the carbon monoxide (CO) molecule. The atmosphere blocks all but the lowest-J transitions of CO for observatories on the ground, but the launch of the Herschel Space Observatory revealed the CO emission of nearby galaxies from J = 4−3 to J = 13−12. Herschel showed that mid- and high-J CO lines in nearby galaxies are emitted from warm gas, accounting for approximately 10% of the molecular mass, but the majority of the CO luminosity. The energy budget of this warm, highly-excited gas is a significant window into the feedback interactions among molecular gas, star formation, and galaxy evolution. Likely, mechanical heating is required to explain the excitation. Such gas has also been observed in star forming regions within our galaxy.

We have examined all ~300 spectra of galaxies from the Herschel Fourier Transform Spectrometer and measured line fluxes or upper limits for the CO J = 4−3 to J = 13−12, [CI], and [NII] 205 micron lines in ~200 galaxies, taking systematic effects of the FTS into account. We will present our line fitting method, illustrate trends available so far in this large sample, and preview the full 2-component radiative transfer likelihood modeling of the CO emission using an illustrative sample of 20 galaxies, including comparisons to well-resolved galactic regions. This work is a comprehensive study of mid- and high-J CO emission among a variety of galaxy types, and can be used as a resource for future (sub)millimeter studies of galaxies with ground-based instruments.

We present new results from a comparative analysis of the resolved giant molecular cloud (GMC) populations in six nearby galaxies. We show that the GMCs in denser environments–M51, the centre of NGC6946–have greater CO surface brightness and higher velocity dispersions relative to their size than GMCs in less dense environments. We find systematic differences in the GMC mass distribution among galaxies, such that more of the molecular gas in the low-mass galaxies (M33, the Large Magellanic Cloud) and the outer disk of M31 is located in low mass clouds. Using the number density of GMCs in the interarm regions of M51, we argue that GMC destruction in this region is regulated by shear, and that cloud lifetimes there are finite and short, ~20 to 30 Myr. Our results indicate the importance of galactic environment on the evolution of GMCs, and on a galaxy's global pattern of star formation.

We use three-dimensional magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) simulations to investigate the quasi-equilibrium states of galactic disks regulated by star formation feedback. We incorporate effects from massive-star feedback via time-varying heating rates and supernova (SN) explosions. We find that the disks in our simulations rapidly approach a quasi-steady state that satisfies vertical dynamical equilibrium. The star formation rate (SFR) surface density self-adjusts to provide the total momentum flux (pressure) in the vertical direction that matches the weight of the gas. We quantify feedback efficiency by measuring feedback yields, ηc≡ Pc/ΣSFR (in suitable units), for each pressure component. The turbulent and thermal feedback yields are the same for HD and MHD simulations, ηth ~ 1 and ηturb ~ 4, consistent with the theoretical expectations. In MHD simulations, turbulent magnetic fields are rapidly generated by turbulence, and saturate at a level corresponding to ηmag,t ~ 1. The presence of magnetic fields enhances the total feedback yield and therefore reduces the SFR, since the same vertical support can be supplied at a smaller SFR. We suggest further numerical calibrations and observational tests in terms of the feedback yields.

During the last two decade, observations have shown the potential of molecular tracers to get insights into the physical processes taking place in the central regions of active galaxies. However, observations were severely limited by both sensitivity and resolution. This resulted also in a limited sample of bright enough galaxies where molecular species other than carbon monoxide could be observed. Current instruments like ALMA and the upcoming NOEMA are already changing our view of the extragalactic ISM molecular observations. In fact, it is now possible to study the physical properties of individual spatially resolved star forming GMCs in external galaxies, as well as resolving the physical structure of the ISM in the surroundings of AGNs at scales of a few parsecs. Here I quickly review some of the most recent observational studies in the nuclear regions of galaxies which are setting new standards in the ways we can study the extragalactic ISM properties.

We examine integrated luminosity relations between the IR continuum and the CO rotational ladder observed for local (ultra) luminous infra-red galaxies ((U)LIRGs, LIR ≥ 1011 M⊙) and normal star forming galaxies in the context of radiation pressure regulated star formation proposed by Andrews & Thompson (2011). This can account for the normalization and linear slopes of the luminosity relations (log LIR = α log L'CO + β) of both low- and high-J CO lines observed for normal galaxies. Super-linear slopes occur for galaxy samples with significantly different dense gas fractions. Local (U)LIRGs are observed to have sub-linear high-J (Jup > 6) slopes or, equivalently, increasing LCOhigh-J/LIR with LIR. In the extreme ISM conditions of local (U)LIRGs, the high-J CO lines no longer trace individual hot spots of star formation (which gave rise to the linear slopes for normal galaxies) but a more widespread warm and dense gas phase mechanically heated by powerful supernovae-driven turbulence and shocks.

Recent Herschel and Planck observations of submillimeter dust emission revealed the omnipresence of filamentary structures in the interstellar medium (ISM). The ubiquity of filaments in quiescent clouds as well as in star-forming regions indicates that the formation of filamentary structures is a natural product of the physics at play in the magnetized turbulent cold ISM. An analysis of more than 270 filaments observed with Herschel in 8 regions of the Gould Belt, shows that interstellar filaments are characterized by a narrow distribution of central width sharply peaked at ~0.1 pc, while they span a wide column density range. Molecular line observations of a sample of these filaments show evidence of an increase in the velocity dispersion of dense filaments with column density, suggesting an evolution in mass per unit length due to accretion of surrounding material onto these star-forming filaments. The analyses of Planck dust polarization observations show that both the mean magnetic field and its fluctuations along the filaments are different from those of their surrounding clouds. This points to a coupling between the matter and the $\vec{B}$-field in the filament formation process. These observational results, derived from dust and gas tracers in total and polarized intensity, set strong constraints on our understanding of the formation and evolution of filaments in the ISM. They provide important clues on the initial conditions of the star formation process along interstellar filaments.

We discuss an overall picture of star formation in the Galaxy. Recent high-resolution magneto-hydrodynamical simulations of two-fluid dynamics with cooling/heating and thermal conduction have shown that the formation of molecular clouds requires multiple episodes of supersonic compression. This finding enables us to create a new scenario of molecular cloud formation through interacting shells or bubbles on galactic scales. We estimate the ensemble-averaged growth rate of individual molecular clouds, and predict the associated cloud mass function. This picture naturally explains the accelerated star formation over many million years that was previously reported by stellar age determination in nearby star forming regions. The recent claim of cloud-cloud collisions as a mechanism for forming massive stars and star clusters can be naturally accommodated in this scenario. This explains why massive stars formed in cloud-cloud collisions follows the power-law slope of the mass function of molecular cloud cores repeatedly found in low-mass star forming regions.

In the current paradigm of turbulence-regulated interstellar medium (ISM), star formation rates of entire galaxies are intricately linked to the density structure of the individual molecular clouds. This density structure is essentially encapsulated in the probability distribution function of volume densities (ρ-PDF), which directly affects the star formation rates predicted by analytic models. Contrasting its fundamental role, the ρ-PDF function has remained virtually unconstrained by observations. I describe in this contribution the recent progress in attaining observational constraints for the column density PDFs (N-PDFs) of molecular clouds that function as a proxy of the ρ-PDFs. Specifically, observational works point towards a universal correlation between the shape of the N-PDFs and star formation activity in molecular clouds. The correlation is in place from the scales of a parsec up to the scales of entire galaxies, making it a fundamental, global link between the ISM structure and star formation.

The stellar initial mass function (IMF) is a fundamental astrophysical quantity that impacts a wide range of astrophysical problems from heavy element distribution to galactic evolution to planetary system formation. However, the origin and universality of the IMF are hotly debated both observationally and theoretically. I review recent observations of the IMF across a variety of environments. These suggest the IMF is surprisingly invariant between star-forming regions, star clusters, and spiral galaxies but that it may also vary under extreme conditions, including within the Galactic center and early type galaxies.

Recent surveys at infrared and submillimeter wavelengths with the Spitzer and Herschel space observatories suggest that star formation in dense molecular gas is governed by essentially the same “laws” in nearby Galactic clouds and distant external galaxies. This raises the possibility of a unified picture for star formation in the Universe from individual-cloud scales to galaxy–wide scales. We summarize the star formation scenario favored by Herschel studies of the nearest molecular clouds of the Galaxy which point to the key role of the quasi-universal filamentary structure pervading the cold interstellar medium.

I review some steps in the conversion of molecular cloud gas into stars and planets, with an emphasis in this presentation on the early stage molecular cloud fragmentation that leads to elongated filaments/ribbons. Magnetic fields can play a crucial role in all stages and need to be invoked particularly for early stage fragmentation as well as in late core collapse where it may control disk formation. I also review some elements of hydrodynamic modeling of disk evolution.

We show data from the SCUBA2 camera on JCMT, of molecular clouds. We focus on starless cores within the clouds. We present data of the Taurus region and show how the environment is affecting some cores' appearance in this region. We compare the SCUBA2 data with Herschel data and discuss the sensitivity of SCUBA2 to surface brightness in the sub-millimetre. We show how this leads to its ability to pick out the densest cores at a given temperature. Hence SCUBA2 preferentially picks out gravitationally bound pre-stellar cores. We discuss the effects of the magnetic field, and how this lends support to a model for the formation and evolution of cores in filamentary molecular clouds.

Dense cores are the simplest star-forming sites. They represent the end stage of the fragmentation hierarchy that characterizes molecular clouds, and they likely control the efficiency of star formation via their relatively low numbers. Recent dust continuum observations of entire molecular clouds show that dense cores often lie along large-scale filamentary structures, suggesting that the cores form by some type of fragmentation process in an approximately cylindrical geometry. To understand the formation mechanism of cores, additional kinematic information is needed, and this requires observations in molecular-line tracers of both the dense cores and their surrounding cloud material. Here I present some recent efforts to clarify the kinematic structure of core-forming regions in the nearby Taurus molecular cloud. These new observations show that the filamentary structures seen in clouds are often more complex than suggested by the maps of continuum emission, and that they consist of multiple fiber-like components that have different velocities and sonic internal motions. These components likely arise from turbulent fragmentation of the large-scale flows that generate the filamentary structures. While not all these fiber-like components further fragment to form dense cores, a small group of them does so, likely by gravitational instability. This fragmentation produces characteristic chain-like groups of dense cores that further evolve to form stars.

Numerical simulations of star formation faces challenges including the huge spatial dynamic range and the presence of multiply coupled highly non-linear physics, such as magnetic field, supersonic turbulence, gravitation, radiation and protostellar outflow feedback. We present in this symposium our latest high resolution adaptive mesh refinement numerical simulations of the formation of filamentary dark molecular clouds from 4.55 pc size scale down to the formation of a protostellar cluster with maximum resolution at 28 AU. The physical properties of the long braided filamentary dark cloud formed in the simulation, the magnetic field properties of the cloud clumps, and the protostellar mass function in the simulations match well with the latest observations.

The unprecedented sensitivity and imaging capabilities offered by the Atacama Large Millimeter Array (ALMA) are transforming our understanding of protoplanetary disks and, hence, of planet formation. In this brief chapter, I first discuss the main results and caveats related to the measurement of the mass of solids in protoplanetary disks based on millimeter-wave observations. I then present a recent analysis of the ALMA observations of the HL Tau disk, which suggests that the observed circular rings might be due to the tidal interaction between Saturn mass planets and the circumstellar material. In the conclusion, I argue that the existing observations of protoplanetary disks suggest that planets might form very early on, perhaps at the same time as the formation of the disk itself.

Because the formation of protostars is believed to be closely tied to the angular momentum problem of star formation, characterizing the properties of the youngest disks around Class 0 objects is crucial. However, not much is known on the structure of the youngest protostellar envelopes, on the small scales at which disks and multiple systems are observed around more evolved YSOs, due to a lack of comprehensive high angular resolution observations (probing <100 AU). In order to tackle this issue, we conducted a large observing program with the IRAM Plateau de Bure interferometer (PdBI): the CALYPSO survey, providing us with detailed maps of molecular lines and millimeter continuum emission, probing scales down to ~30–50 au towards a sample of 17 Class 0 protostars. Here we present our analysis of the CALYPSO dust continuum emission maps, constraining disk properties of the Class 0 protostars in our sample. We show that large, r > 50 au, disk structures are not observed in most Class 0 protostars from our sample, which can be described by various envelope models reproducing satisfactorily the intensity distribution of the dust emission at all scales from 50 au to 5000 au.
