We present the first results for the estimation of gravity and effective temperature of poorly studied chemically peculiar stars recently observed with the spectropolarimeter ESPaDOnS at CFHT in the frame of the VeSElkA (Vertical Stratification of Elements Abundance) project. A grid of theoretical stellar atmosphere models with the corresponding fluxes has been calculated using the PHOENIX code. We have used these fluxes to fit Balmer line profiles employing the code FITSB2 that produces estimates of the effective temperature, surface gravity and radial velocity for each star.

We investigate the radial pulsation properties of massive main-sequence stars using both linear and non-linear calculations. Using 20, 40, 60 and 85 solar-mass models evolved by Meynet et al. (1994), we calculate nonlinear hydrodynamic envelope models including the effects of time-dependent convection. Many of these models are massive enough to lose a significant amount of mass as they evolve, which also reveals more helium-rich layers. This allows us to investigate the dependence of pulsation on mass, metallicity and surface helium abundance. We find that as a model loses mass, the periods become longer relative to the period predicted by the period-mean density relation (period × $\sqrt{\overline{\rho}}$ is proportional to a constant, Q) for the initial model. Increased surface helium abundance causes a dramatic decrease in the period relative to that expected from Q, while changing the metallicity had little impact on the expected periods.

The bipolar or more complex morphology observed in planetary nebulae have been explained by two principal hypothesis: by the existence of a companion and an accreting disk or by the effects of magnetic field, (or a combination of both). Symbiotics are binary systems and some of them show morphologies similar to those observed on planetary nebulae. This fact could support the binary hypothesis for PNe. We have therefore performed polarimetric observations of symbiotic systems and some planetary nebulae in order, first to detect linear polarisation with POLIMA at the San Pedro Mártir observatory, and ultimately to prove the existence and physical properties of those disks. We present here the first results of a project dedicated to the analysis of the polarisation observed in evolved objects starting with the PN M2-9 and R Aqr.

The new spectropolarimetric observations of HD 22920 with ESPaDOnS at CFHT reveal a strong variability of its spectral line profiles with the phase of stellar rotation. We have obtained Teff = 13640 K, logg=3.72 for this star from the best fit of its nine Balmer line profiles. The respective model of stellar atmosphere was calculated to perform abundance analysis of HD 22920 using the spectra obtained for three different phases of stellar rotation. We have found that silicon and chromium abundances appear to be vertically stratified in the atmosphere of HD 22920. Meanwhile, silicon shows hints for a possible variability of vertical abundance stratification with rotational phase.

Unknown extinction of Galactic disk stars makes it difficult to select flux standards based on colors alone for the LAMOST Spectroscopic Survey of the Galactic Anti-center (LSS-GAC; Liu et al., this volume). To solve this problem, for each spectrograph of an LSS-GAC plate, 5 – 10 F-type stars are selected from spectroscopy-based stellar parameters (Teff, log g, [Fe/H]) and adopted as flux standards, and an iterative approach is adopted to calibrate spectra. From spectra processed with nominal response curves, stellar parameters are derived with the PKU stellar parameter pipeline, LSP3 (Liu et al., this volume). More realistic response curves are then derived by comparing the observed spectra with synthetic spectra (Munari et al. 2005). The later is reddened assuming a R=3.1 Fitzpatrick (1999) reddening law using E(B-V) obtained by comparing photometric and synthetic colors. New stellar parameters are derived from spectra reprocessed using the new response curves, iteratively. Comparison of LSS-GAC spectral colors with photometric ones yields differences on average 0.01±0.06 and −0.06±0.04 mag in g-r and r-i, respectively. The relatively large difference in r-i is caused by the fact that the current pipeline has opted to not to correct for the telluric absorption, most notably in the i-band. Comparison of multi-epoch LSS-GAC spectra indicates < 8% uncertainties in the spectral shape from 4000 to 9000 Å. The LSS-GAC seems to yields spectra of more realistic SEDs than the SDSS (DR7) at low Galactic latitudes (Fig. 1). The shape of LAMOST response curves may vary by up to 20% in a given night, and even larger for different nights, indicating that flux calibration plate by plate is essential.

The HeRGÉ (Herschel Radio Galaxy Evolution) project consists of a sample of 70 radio galaxies in the range 1 < z < 5.2. They benefit from continuous coverage from 3 to 870μm with Spitzer, Herschel and sub-mm ground-based instruments (SCUBA, LABOCA). As a calorimeter, IR is an excellent proxy to estimate the contribution of both AGN and starburst, making of radio galaxies perfect candidates to provide new insights into the relationship between AGN and their host galaxies. The IR SED fitting with empirical templates reveals that radio galaxies are luminous and that their black holes and their host galaxies are not growing simultaneously. Extending the SED to optical/near-IR on a subsample of 12 radio galaxies spanning 1 < z < 4 reveal the necessity of three components to reproduce the observations. Making use of the evolutionary code PEGASE.3 and an AGN torus model, we are able to estimate parameters from the AGN torus, the evolved stellar population and the starburst (SB). They reveal that radio galaxies are massive, evolved, forming the bulk of their mass at very high redshift in a short timescale, but experience episodic, strong SB events, often associated with an AGN activity.

The Galactic center (GC) molecular cloud G0.13–0.13 exhibits a shell morphology in CS J = (1 − 0), with ∼ 105 solar masses and expansion speed ∼ 20 km s−1, yielding a total kinetic energy ∼ 1051 erg. Its morphology is also suggestive of an interaction with the nonthermal filaments of the GC arc. 74 MHz emission indicates the presence of a substantial population of low energy electrons permeating the cloud, which could either be produced by the interaction with the arc or accelerated in the shock waves responsible for the cloud's expansion. These scenarios are explored using time dependent diffusion models.

With these diffusion models, we determine the penetration of low-energy cosmic-ray electrons accelerated into G0.13–0.13 and calculate the spatial distribution of the cosmic-ray ionization and heating rates. We show that the 6.4 keV Fe Kα line emission associated with the electron population provides an observational diagnostic to distinguish these two acceleration scenarios.

We discuss the implications of our results for understanding the distinct character of clouds in the central molecular zone compared to clouds in the Galactic disk, and how GC nonthermal filaments interact with molecular clouds.

We present results of a search for variable stars in the young open cluster NGC 2244. As a result we have found many eclipsing systems and pulsating stars, some of which are multiperiodic. Here we show only a few examples.

We present the preliminary results of the measurements of longitudinal magnetic field of the massive white dwarf 1658+441. This star have an hydrogen pure atmosphere (e.g. Dupuis & Chayer, 2003). We have observed the target in a total of 18 hrs during 3 consecutive nights in June 2010 and one more in May 2011. The data was acquired with a prototypical spectropolarimeter at the San Pedro Martir Telescope in Mexico. We have tested the magnetic field measurements with our instrument using the famous Babcock's star obtaining consistent results with previous studies. For our object of study, the WD 1658+441, we have measured variable intensities of the longitudinal magnetic field of Blong = 720 kG that oscillates with an amplitude of 130 kG.

A few alpha-poor stars that show severe departures (over 0.4 dex deficiency in alpha-element abundance) from the general enhanced alpha-element chemical abundance trends of the halo have been discovered in recent years, such as BD +80°245, G4-36 and CS 22966-043. These ratios suggest a different chemical enrichment history for these stars than for the majority of the halo. Similarly low-alpha abundance patterns are also seen in the Sagittarius dSph galaxy. We present a method for searching of extremely alpha-poor stars from low-resolution stellar spectra of LAMOST pilot survey and attempt to create a large sample of these particular Galactic halo stars.

Mass ejection in the form of winds or jets appears to be as fundamental to quasar activity as accretion. A convincing argument for radiation pressure driving this ionized outflow can be made within the dust sublimation radius. Beyond, radiation pressure is even more ubiquitous, as high energy photons from the central engine can now push on dust grains. This physics underlies the dusty-wind model for the putative obscuring torus. Specifically, the dusty wind in our model is first launched from the outer accretion disk as a magneto-centrifugal wind and then accelerated and shaped by radiation pressure from the central continuum. Such a wind can plausibly account for both the necessary obscuring medium to explain the observed ratio of broad-to-narrow-line quasars and the mid-infrared emission commonly seen in quasar spectral energy distributions.

We present preliminary results of the determination of fundamental parameters of single O-type stars in the MiMeS survey. We present the sample and we focus on surface CNO abundances, showing how they change as stars evolve off the zero-age main sequence.

The strongest known magnetic fields are found in neutron stars. I briefly discuss how they are inferred from observations, as well as the evidence for their time-evolution. I go on to show how these extremely strong fields are actually weak in terms of their effects on the stellar structure. This is also the case for magnetic stars on the upper main sequence and magnetic white dwarfs, which have similar total magnetic fluxes, perhaps pointing to an evolutionary connection. I suggest that a stable hydromagnetic equilibrium (containing a poloidal and a toroidal field component) could be established soon after the birth of the neutron star, aided by the strong compositional stratification of neutron star matter, and this state is slowly eroded by non-ideal magnetohydrodynamic processes such as beta decays and ambipolar diffusion in the core of the star and Hall drift and breaking of the solid in its crust. Over sufficiently long time scales, the fluid in the neutron star core will behave as if it were barotropic, because, depending on temperature and magnetic field strength, beta decays will keep adjusting the composition to the chemical equilibrium state, or ambipolar diffusion will decouple the charged component from the neutrons. Therefore, the still open question regarding stable hydromagnetic equilibria in barotropic fluids will become relevant for the evolution, at least for magnetar fields, which are likely too strong to be stabilized by the solid crust.

An extended set of evolutionary and pulsational models has been computed for two chemical compositions representative of classical Cepheids in the Large Magellanic Cloud. The comparison between the standard and He enhanced theoretical predictions is analysed and the implications for interpreting current observations and for defining the Cepheid based distance scale are discussed.

One of the major science objectives of the Nuclear Spectroscopic Telescope Array (NuSTAR) observatory is to perform the first sub-arcminute, hard X-ray survey of several square degrees of the Galactic plane, centered on a region near the Galactic center. As a prelude to the full survey, which began in July 2013, NuSTAR conducted a ∼500 ks, 0.3 × 0.4° “mini-survey” focused on Sgr A* and its environs. We present analysis of several candidate pulsar wind nebulae and filaments, which are revealed to be intense sources of X-ray emission at >10 keV.

For the first time spectropolarimetric observations of Wolf-Rayet star WR156 (WN8h) were conducted. Medium resolution spectropolarimetric data in the range of 3500-7200 ÅÅ were obtained at Russian 6-m telescope of Special Astrophysical Observatory (SAO RAS). These data show that the light from the star is significantly polarized, with the degree of polarization P=1.38±0.06%, and the position angle Θ=77.4°±1.2°. This polarization, most probably, has an interstellar origin, as its magnitude and orientation are similar to the ones of field stars. Also, we present results of numerical modeling of WR156 atmosphere performed using cmfgen code. According to it, WR156 is the richest hydrogen Wolf-Rayet star of WN8 type in the Galaxy.

The discovery of the Galactic center pulsar SGR J1745–29 has provided an important new window into plasma processes in the Galactic center (GC) interstellar medium, the population of compact objects in the GC, and the prospects for probing general relativistic effects through timing of a Sgr A* pulsar companion. We discuss here radio observations of the pulsar and how they are providing fresh insights. In particular, our results show that recent pulsar surveys had the sensitivity to detect many pulsars in the GC region without significant losses due to interstellar scattering. This raise the question of why only this pulsar close to Sgr A* has been detected.

Mid-infrared (MIR) quasar spectra exhibit a suite of emission features including high ionization coronal lines from the narrow line region (NLR) illuminated by the ionizing continuum, and hot dust features from grains, as well as polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH) features from star formation in the host galaxy. Few features are detected in most spectra because of typically low signal-to-noise ratio (S/N) data. By generating spectral composites in three different luminosity bins from over 180 Spitzer Ifnfrared Spectrograph (IRS) observations, we boost the S/N and reveal important features in the complex spectra. We detect high-ionization, forbidden emission lines in all templates, PAH features in all but the most luminous objects, and broad silicate and graphite features in emission whose strength increases relative to the continuum with luminosity. We find that the intrinsic quasar spectrum for all luminosity templates is consistent, and the differences in the spectra can be explained by host galaxy contamination in the lower luminosity templates. We also posit that star formation may be active in most quasar host galaxies, but the spectral features of star formation are only detectable if the quasar is faint.

Many early-type stars have been measured with high angular velocities. In such stars, mode identification is difficult as the effects of fast and differential rotation are not well known. Using fundamental parameters measured by interferometry, the ESTER structure code and the TOP oscillation code, we investigate the oscillation spectrum of α Ophiuchi, for which observations by the MOST satellite found 57 oscillations frequencies. Results do not show a clear identification of the modes and highlight the difficulties of asteroseismology for such stars with a very complex oscillation spectrum.

The crust of Neutron Stars can be approximated by a highly conducting solid crystal lattice. The evolution of the magnetic field in the crust is mediated through Hall effect, namely the electric current is carried by the free electrons of the lattice and the magnetic field lines are advected by the electron fluid. Here, we present the results of a time-dependent evolution code which shows the effect Hall drift has in the large-scale evolution of the magnetic field. In particular we link analytical predictions with simulation results. We find that there are two basic evolutionary paths, depending on the initial conditions compared to Hall equilibrium. We also show the effect axial symmetry combined with density gradient have on suppressing turbulent cascade.
