In these proceedings I briefly: (1) review the impact (or “feedback”) that active galactic nuclei (AGN) are predicted to have on their host galaxies and larger scale environment, (2) review the observational evidence for or against these predictions and (3) present new results on ionised outflows in AGN. The observational support for the “maintenance mode” of feedback is strong (caveat the details); AGN at the centre of massive halos appear to be regulating the cooling of hot gas, which could in turn control the levels of future star formation (SF) and black hole growth. In contrast, direct observational support for more rapid forms of feedback, which dramatically impact on SF (i.e., the “quasar mode”), remains elusive. From a systematic study of the spectra of ≈24 000 AGN we find that extreme ionised gas kinematics are common, and are most prevalent in radio bright AGN (L1.4 GHz > 103 W Hz−1). Follow-up IFU observations have shown that these extreme gas kinematics are extended over kilo-parsec scales. However, the co-existence of high-levels of SF, luminous AGN activity and radio jets raises interesting questions on the primary drivers and impact of these outflows. Galaxy-wide, high-mass outflows are being observed in an increasing number of AGN and are a plausible mechanism for the depletion of gas; however, there is still much work to be done to determine the physical processes that drive these outflows and to measure the level of impact that they have on their host galaxies.

Fourier analysis of the light curve of AC And from the HATNet database reveals the rich frequency structure of this object. Above 30 components are found down to the amplitude of 3 mmag. Several of these frequencies are not the linear combinations of the three basic components. We detect period increase in all three components that may lend support to the Population I classification of this variable.

So far, surface magnetic fields have never been reported on Mira stars, while observational facilities allowing detection and measurement of weak surface fields through the Zeeman effect have become available. Then, in order to complete the knowledge of the magnetic field and of its influence during the transition from Asymptotic Giant Branch (AGB) to Planetary Nebulae (PN) stages, we have undertaken a search for magnetic fields at the surface of Miras. We present the first spectropolarimetric observations (performed with the Narval instrument at Télescope Bernard Lyot-TBL, Pic du Midi, France) of the S-type Mira star χ Cyg. We have detected a polarimetric signal in the Stokes V spectra and we have established its Zeeman origin. We claim that it is likely to be related to a weak magnetic field present at the photospheric level and in the lower part of the stellar atmosphere. The origin of this magnetic field is discussed in the framework of shock waves periodically propagating throughout the atmosphere of a Mira.

Black holes orbiting the supermassive black hole (SMBH) Sgr A* in the Galactic center (GC) of the Milky Way generate gravitational waves (GW). The resulting spectrum, due to stars and black holes (BHs), is continuous below 40 nHz while individual BHs within about 200 AU of the central SMBH stick out in the spectrum at higher frequencies. The GWs can be detected by timing radio pulsars within a few parsecs of this region. Future observations with the Square Kilometer Array of such pulsars with sufficient timing accuracy may be sensitive to signals from intermediate mass BHs (IMBH) in a 3 year observation baseline. The recent detection of radio pulsations from the magnetar SGR J1745–29 very near the GC opens up the possibilities of detecting millisecond pulsars (which can be used as probes of the GWs) through lines of sight with only moderate pulse and angular broadening due to scattering.

We select super high quality spectra of spectral type A, F, G, K, M stars from SDSS C DR7. We mix our spectra with noise and then measure their radial velocity. The analysis shows that the accuracy of K, M type stars is much better than A, F stars. With our relationship between the signal-to-noise and accuracy of radial velocity measurement of different spectral type, we provide a good reference for stellar study related to radial velocity.

We report the results from a systematic search for molecular (OH 119 μm) outflows with Herschel-PACS† in a sample of 43 nearby (z < 0.3) galaxy mergers, mostly ultraluminous infrared galaxies (ULIRGs) and QSOs. We find that the character of the OH feature (strength of the absorption relative to the emission) correlates with that of the 9.7-μm silicate feature, a measure of obscuration in ULIRGs. Unambiguous evidence for molecular outflows, based on the detection of OH absorption profiles with median velocities more blueshifted than −50 km s−1, is seen in 26 (70%) of the 37 OH-detected targets, suggesting a wide-angle (~ 145°) outflow geometry. Conversely, unambiguous evidence for molecular inflows, based on the detection of OH absorption profiles with median velocities more redshifted than +50 km s−1, is seen in only 4 objects, suggesting a planar or filamentary geometry for the inflowing gas. Terminal outflow velocities of ~ −1000 km s−1 are measured in several objects, but median outflow velocities are typically ~ −200 km s−1. While the outflow velocities show no statistically significant dependence on the star formation rate, they are distinctly more blueshifted among systems with large AGN fractions and luminosities [log (LAGN/L⊙) ≥ 11.8 ± 0.3]. The quasars in these systems play a dominant role in driving the molecular outflows. In contrast, the most AGN dominated systems, where OH is seen purely in emission, show relatively modest OH line widths, despite their large AGN luminosities, perhaps indicating that molecular outflows subside once the quasar has cleared a path through the obscuring material.

We positionally cross-matched the stellar observations between LAMOST pilot survey and SDSS/SEGUE database, picked out more than 4000 targets observed by both projects, mostly are late A and FGK type stars. For the two dataset, we adopted ULySS program (Koleva et al. 2009, Wu et al. 2011a) to determine the stellar atmospheric parameters (Teff, log g, [Fe/H], Radial Velocity) with the ELODIE library as a reference (Wu et al. 2011b). For the individual parameter, we made two kinds of comparison, first for the SDSS spectra, second for the LAMOST spectra, tested the differences between the SSPP (SDSS/SEGUE stellar parameter pipeline) measurements and the ULySS derived results. Since the LAMOST pilot survey observations SNR (Signal to Noise Ratio) are low, for the latter comparison we excluded those stars with g band SNR < 10, then the sample volumn reduced to around 1300. Fig.1 displays the details of the second kind comparison for each parameter. All the comparisons demonstrate acceptable and reasonable agreement between each other for medium-resolution survey spectra. Our preliminary examination on the precision of the stellar parameters that could be derived from the LAMOST pilot survey observations exhibits the equivalent capability of LAMOST to study our Milky Way as for the SDSS/SEGUE. The LAMOST telescope executed its formal survey from Sep. 28th 2012, it will yield more better quality stellar spectroscopic data spanning in deeper and broader sky coverage (this work was supported by the Natural Science Foundation of China under No. 11103031).

Runaway instability operates in accretion tori around black holes, where it affects systems close to the critical (cusp overflowing) configuration. The runaway effect depends on the radial profile l(R) of the angular momentum distribution of the fluid, on the dimension-less spin a of the central black hole (|a| ≤ 1), and other factors, such as self-gravity. Here we discuss the role of runaway instability within a framework of an axially symmetric model of perfect fluid endowed with a purely toroidal magnetic field.

The intrinsic linearly polarized light arising from electron scattering of stellar radiation in a non-spherically symmetric distribution of gas is a characterizing feature of classical Be stars. The distinct polarimetric signature provides a mean for directly probing the physical and geometric properties of the gaseous material enveloping these rapidly-rotating massive stars. Using a Monte Carlo radiative transfer computation and a self-consistent radiative equilibrium solution for the circumstellar gas, we explore the role of this observable signature in investigating the dynamical nature of classical Be star disks. In particular, we focus on the potential for using linearly polarized light to develop diagnostics of mass-loss events and to trace the evolution of the gas in a circumstellar disk. An informed context for interpreting the observed linear polarization signature can play an important role in identifying the physical process(es) which govern the formation and dissipation of the gaseous disks surrounding classical Be stars.

Stars with a mass up to a few solar masses are one of the main contributors to the enrichment of the interstellar medium in dust and heavy elements. However, while significant progress has been made, the process of the mass-loss responsible for this enrichment is still not exactly known and forces beyond radiation pressure might be required. Often, the mass lost in the last phases of the stars life will become a spectacular planetary nebula. The shaping process of often strongly a-spherical PNe is equally elusive. Both binaries and magnetic fields have been suggested to be possible agents although a combination of both might also be a natural explanation.

Here I review the current evidence for magnetic fields around AGB and post-AGB stars pre-Planetary Nebulae and PNe themselves. Magnetic fields appear to be ubiquitous in the envelopes of apparently single stars, challenging current ideas on its origin, although we have found that binary companions could easily be hidden from view. There are also strong indications of magnetically collimated outflows from post-AGB/pre-PNe objects supporting a significant role in shaping the circumstellar envelope.

The Kepler space telescope has proven to be a gold mine for the study of variable stars. Unfortunately, Kepler only returns a handful of pixels surrounding each star on the target list, which omits a large number of stars in the Kepler field. For the open clusters NGC 6791 and NGC 6819, Kepler also reads out larger superstamps which contain complete images of the central region of each cluster. These cluster images can potentially be used to study additional stars in the open clusters. We present preliminary results from using traditional photometric techniques to identify and analyze additional variable stars from these images.

Many OB stars show unexplained cyclical variability in their winds and in many optical lines, which are formed at the base of the wind. For these stars no dipolar magnetic fields have been detected. We propose that these cyclical variations are caused by the presence of multiple, transient, short-lived, corotating magnetic loops, which we call “stellar prominences”. We present a simplified model representing these prominences as corotating spherical blobs and fit the rapid variability in the Heii λ4686 line of the O supergiant λ Cep for time-resolved spectra obtained in 1989. Our conclusions are: (1) From model fits we find that the life time of the prominences varies, and is between 2–7 h. (2) The adopted inclination angle is 68° with a rotation period of ≈ 4.1 d (but not well constrained). (3) The contribution of non-radial pulsations is negligible (4) Similar behavior is observed in at least 4 other O stars. We propose that prominences are a common phenomenon among O stars.

We developed an advanced binary system model that includes stellar oscillations on one or both stars, with the goal of mode identification by fitting of the photometric light curves. The oscillations are modeled as perturbations of the local surface temperature and the local gravitational potential. In the case of tidally distorted stars, it is assumed that the pulsation axis coincides with the direction connecting the centers of the components rather than with the rotation axis. The mode identification method, originally devised by B. Bíró, is similar to eclipse mapping in that it utilizes the amplitude, phase and frequency modulation of oscillations during the eclipse; but the identification is achieved by grid-fitting of the observed light curve rather than by image reconstruction. The proposed model and the mode identification method have so far been tested on synthetic data with encouraging results.

The role of magnetic field in late type stars such as proto-planetary and planetary nebulae (PPNe/PNe), is poorly known from an observational point of view. We present submillimetric observations realized with the Submillimeter Array (SMA) which unveil the dust continuum polarization in the envelopes of two well known PPNe: CRL 618 and OH 231.8+4.2. Assuming the current grain alignment theory, we were then able to trace the geometry of the magnetic field.

The Gaia mission will observe the entire sky for 5 years providing ultra-precise astrometric, photometric and spectroscopic measurements for a billion stars in the Galaxy. Hence, naturally, Gaia becomes an all-sky multi-epoch photometric survey, which will monitor and detect variability with millimag precision as well as new transient sources such as supernovae, novae, microlensing events, tidal disruption events, asteroids, among others.

Gaia data-flow allows for quick detections of anomalies within 24-48h after the observation. Such near-real-time survey will be able to detect about 6000 supernovae brighter than 19 mag up to redshifts of Z 0.15. The on-board low-resolution (R 100) spectrograph will allow for early and robust classification of transients and minimise the false-alert rate, even providing the estimates on redshift for supernovae. Gaia will also offer a unique possibility for detecting astrometric shifts in microlensing events, which, combined with Gaia's and ground-based photometry, will provide unique mass measurements of lenses, constrains on the dark matter content in the Milky Way and possible detections of free floating black holes.

Alerts from Gaia will be publicly available soon after the detection is verified and tested. First alerts are expected early in 2014 and those will be used for ground-based verification. All facilities are invited to join the verification and the follow-up effort. Alerts will be published on a web page, via Skyalert.org and via emailing list. Each alert will contain coordinates, Gaia light curve and low-resolution spectra, classification and cross-matching results.

Low-luminosity radio galaxies, common in the local Universe, are associated with giant elliptical galaxies and typically with a FR I radio morphology. However, they are rare in flux-limited samples of distant radio-loud (RL) AGN due to a selection bias. Chiaberge et al. (2009) selected the first sizeable sample of FRI candidates at 1<z<3, in the COSMOS field. We study the Spectral Energy Distributions (SEDs) of this low radio power sample from the far-UV to the Mid-IR wavelengths. Our results show that the hosts of these high-z low-luminosity radio sources are old massive galaxies, similar to the local FR Is. However, for half of the sample the UV and MIR excesses indicate the possible significant contribution from star formation and/or nuclear activity, not seen in low-z FR Is. Our sources display a wide variety of properties: from possible quasars at the highest luminosities, to low-luminosity old galaxies.

Supermassive black holes (106–109 M⊙) are now known to be present at the centers of most galaxies, but they are also found to have a close correlation with the host galaxy they live in. The masses of the supermasssive black holes (SMBHs) have been rigorously calculated using stellar dynamics (e.g., Gillessen et al. 2009) for the Milky Way, gas dynamics (e.g., Davis et al. 2013) for NGC 4526, water maser emissions, reverberation mapping, etc. In comparison, the mass of the SMBH seems to be tightly correlated with the galactic bulge it resides in. The tight correlation between the mass of the BH and the velocity dispersion of the stars in the bulge, known as the M-σ relation, (Ferrarese & Merritt, 2000; Tremaine et al. 2002), and the 2:1000 mass of BH - mass of bulge ratio suggests some sort of co-evolution process. A feedback driven coevolution process would suggest that the BH directly controls galaxy properties via energy and momentum feedback (Kormendy & Ho, 2013). However, since correlation does not necessarily imply causation, the evolution may be a non-causal process that occurs in tandem, where the BH and bulge grow independently. In such a process, star formation in the bulge and growth of SMBH occur in separate periods and are self regulating (Cen, 2012).

Cosmic rays represent a unique crossing point of high-energy astrophysics and astrochemistry. The cosmic ray ionization rate of molecular hydrogen (ζ2) measured by H3+ spectroscopy in the central parsec of the Galaxy is 2 orders of magnitude higher than that in the dense clouds outside the Galactic center. However, it is still too short, by the factor of 10,000, to agree with an extremely high ζ2 that accommodates the new γ-ray observations of Sgr A* and its environment.

We present the results of recent studies on the co-evolution of galaxies and the supermassive black holes (SMBHs) using Herschel far-infrared and Chandra X-ray observations in the Boötes survey region. For a sample of star-forming (SF) galaxies, we find a strong correlation between galactic star formation rate and the average SMBH accretion rate in SF galaxies. Recent studies have shown that star formation and AGN accretion are only weakly correlated for individual AGN, but this may be due to the short variability timescale of AGN relative to star formation. Averaging over the full AGN population yields a strong linear correlation between accretion and star formation, consistent with a simple picture in which the growth of SMBHs and their host galaxies are closely linked over galaxy evolution time scales.

We present the first results for the estimation of gravity and effective temperature of poorly studied chemically peculiar stars recently observed with the spectropolarimeter ESPaDOnS at CFHT in the frame of the VeSElkA (Vertical Stratification of Elements Abundance) project. A grid of theoretical stellar atmosphere models with the corresponding fluxes has been calculated using the PHOENIX code. We have used these fluxes to fit Balmer line profiles employing the code FITSB2 that produces estimates of the effective temperature, surface gravity and radial velocity for each star.
