We compare the abundances of various chemical species as derived with 3D hydrodynamical and classical 1D stellar atmosphere codes in a late-type giant characterized by Teff =3640 K, log g = 1.0, [M/H]= 0.0. For this particular set of atmospheric parameters the 3D–1D abundance differences are generally small for neutral atoms and molecules but they may reach up to 0.3–0.4 dex in case of ions. The 3D–1D differences generally become increasingly more negative at higher excitation potentials and are typically largest in the optical wavelength range. Their sign can be both positive and negative, and depends on the excitation potential and wavelength of a given spectral line. While our results obtained with this particular late-type giant model suggest that 1D stellar atmosphere models may be safe to use with neutral atoms and molecules, care should be taken if they are exploited with ions.

The cometary nature of the 1908 Tunguska cosmic body is compatible with the predictions of an analytical theory of the 1908 Tunguska explosion developed in 1976–1979. The theory takes into account the three simultaneously occurring processes, namely aerodynamic destruction of the cosmic body in the Earth's atmosphere, transversal expansion of the crushed mass under the action of pressure gradient on the frontal surface of the body, and an aerodynamic deceleration of crushed expanding mass. The use, for the mechanical parameters of the Tunguska cosmic body, of the characteristics of a cometary nuclei such as that of comet Halley 1986 III and comet Shoemaker – Levy 9 1994, gives parameters of the Tunguska explosion derived from observations of Tunguska event in the Siberian taiga in 1908.

The Herschel and Planck satellites have started imaging the sky at far-IR to mm wavelengths with an unprecedented combination of sky and spectral coverage, angular resolution, and sensitivity, thus opening the last window of the electromagnetic spectrum on the Galaxy. Dedicated observing programs on Herschel and the Planck all-sky survey will provide the first complete view at cold dust across the Galaxy, opening new perspectives on the structure and dynamical evolution of the Milky Way relevant to Gaia. The analysis and modelling of these observations will contribute to our understanding of two key questions: how do stars form from interstellar matter? how are the interstellar medium and the magnetic field dynamically coupled? The comparison with Gaia observations will contribute to build a 3D model of the Galactic extinction taking into account dust evolution between ISM components

Connections between observations of the lithium abundance in various types of red giants and stellar evolution are discussed here. The emphasis is on three main topics; 1) the depletion of Li as stars ascend the red giant branch for the first time, 2) the synthesis of 7Li in luminous and massive asymptotic giant branch stars via the mechanism of hot-bottom burning, and 3) the possible multiple sources of excess Li abundances found in a tiny fraction of various types of G and K giants.

The spectroscopic properties of a sample of nine Seyfert 1, six NLS1, 26 Seyfert 2, and three starburst galaxies have been studied at mid-infrared wavelengths in order to determine if the frequency of detection of the brightest emission lines and the continuum shape are correlated with the degree of activity. The raw data were obtained from the Spitzer Infrared Spectrograph (IRS) archive and reduced with the pipeline (version 17.2). The spectra of the galaxies were grouped by type of activity. We conclude through this study that in general the continuum shape of the active galactic nuclei (AGN) is flat between 5 μm and 12 μm, and strong variations are found at longer wavelengths in this sample.

Over the next 5 years the VVV collaboration (Vista Variable in the Via Lactea) will conduct an extensive survey of the galactic bulge and disk in the near-IR, using the new VISTA telescope. This public survey covers a field of 520 sqr. deg, including not only regions of high star formation, but also 33 known globular clusters and ~350 open clusters. The final product will be a deep IR atlas in 5 passbands for ~109 point sources among which we expect 106 variable stars. These will be produce a 3-D map of the surveyed region using well-understood primary distance indicators such as RR Lyrae stars. The observations will be combined with data from MACHO, OGLE, EROS, VST, Spitzer, HST, Chandra, Integral, and ALMA for a complete understanding of the variable sources in the inner Milky Way. Several important implications for the history of the Milky Way, for globular cluster evolution, for the population census of the bulge and center, and for the pulsation theory will follow from this survey.

We present photometry for the globular cluster NGC 6642 using the F606W and F814W filters with the ACS/WFC third-generation camera aboard the Hubble Space Telescope. The colour–magnitude diagram shows sources reaching ≈ 6 mag below the turnoff in mF606W. Theoretical isochrone fitting was performed and evolutionary parameters were obtained, including the metallicity [Fe/H] = −1.80 ± 0.2 dex and age, log(age/yr) = 10.14 ± 0.05. We confirm that NGC 6642 is located in the Galactic bulge, at a distance of d⊙ = 8.05±0.66 kpc and suffers from a reddening of E(B − V) = 0.46 ± 0.02 mag. These values are in general agreement with those of previous authors. Completeness-corrected luminosity and mass functions were obtained for different annuli centred on NGC 6642. Their spatial variation indicates the existence of mass segregation and depletion of low-mass stars. Most striking is the inverted shape of the mass function itself, with an increase in stellar numbers as a function of increasing mass. This has been observed previously in other globular clusters and is also the result of N-body simulations of stellar systems which have reached ≃90% of their lifetime and are subjected to strong tidal effects. We thus conclude that NGC 6642 is a very old, highly evolved globular cluster. Its current location close to perigalacticon, at only 1.4 kpc from the Galactic Centre, may contribute to this high level of dynamical evolution and stellar depletion.

Gaia is an ambitious space astrometry mission of ESA with a main objective to map the sky in astrometry and photometry down to a magnitude 20 by the end of the next decade. Given its extreme astrometric accuracy and the repeated observations over five years, the observation modelling is done in a fully relativistic framework and several tests of General Relativity or of its extensions can be carried out during the data processing. The paper presents an overview of the current activities in this area and of the expected performances.

In this paper we analyze soft and hard X-ray emission of the 2002 September 20 M1.8 GOES class solar flare observed by RHESSI and GOES satellites, where soft X-ray emission precedes the onset of the main bulk hard X-ray emission by ~5 min. This suggests that an additional heating mechanism may be at work at the early beginning of the flare. However RHESSI spectra indicate presence of the non-thermal electrons also before impulsive phase. So, we assumed that a dominant energy transport mechanism during rise phase of solar flares is electron beam-driven evaporation. We used non-thermal electron beams derived from RHESSI spectra as the heating source in a hydrodynamic model of the analyzed flare. We showed that energy delivered by non-thermal electron beams is sufficient to heat the flare loop to temperatures in which it emits soft X-ray closely following the GOES 1–8 Å light-curve.

It is a great pleasure for me to open the IAU-UNESCO Symposium on The Role of Astronomy in Society and Culture which is taking place at the UNESCO Headquarters this week.

SMART is a model to derive both star formation history and chemical evolution simultaneously from color-magnitude diagrams of resolved stars in a galaxy. We present current progress and discuss the prospects of SMART for the next decade.

The ESA space astrometry mission Gaia, due for launch in early 2012, will in addition to its huge output of fundamental astrometric and astrophysical data also provide stringent tests of general relativity. In this paper we present an updated analysis of Gaia's capacity to measure the PPN parameter γ as part of its core astrometric solution. The analysis is based on small-scale astrometric solutions taking into account the simultaneous determination of stellar astrometric parameters and the satellite attitude. In particular, the statistical correlation between PPN γ and the stellar parallaxes is considered. Extrapolating the results to a full-scale solution using some 100 million stars, we find that PPN γ could be obtained to about 10−6, which is significantly better than today's best estimate from the Cassini mission of 2 × 10−5.

As an ancient and multidisciplinary field, astronomy is an ambassador for all sciences. Astronomy's broad appeal, whether from its cultural interest of our place in the universe, or its practical aims such as sea- or space navigation, is well recorded in history from ancient to modern times, and sky-awareness, more generally, began prehistorically. Astronomy's perceived role and purpose has continually developed over the ages. In all, astronomy is not to be viewed as a narrow subject operating in isolation but one that has contributed comprehensively to the advancement of society.

We discuss plans for a new joint effort between observers and theorists to understand the formation of the Milky Way halo back to the first epochs of chemical evolution. New models based on high-resolution N-body simulations coupled to simple models of Galactic chemical evolution show that surviving stars from the epoch of the first galaxies remain in the Milky Way today and should bear the nucleosynthetic imprint of the first stars. We investigate the key physical influences on the formation of stars in the first galaxies and how they appear today, including the relationship between cosmic reionization and surviving Milky Way stars. These models also provide a physically motivated picture of the formation of the Milky Ways “outer halo,” which has been identified from recent large samples of stars from SDSS. The next steps are to use these models to guide rigorous gas simulations of Milky Way formation, including its disk, and to gradually build up the fully detailed theoretical “Virtual Galaxy” that is demanded by the coming generation of massive Galactic stellar surveys.

We present the preliminary results of an analysis performed on two samples of thermally pulsing Asymptotic Giant Branch stars from our Galaxy, the first made of carbon-rich sources and the second of S-type stars. We have estimated their absolute luminosities and updated rates of the stellar winds through methods based on their infrared spectrophotometry and on updated estimates of their variability and distance.

We then focus on those sources in our database showing Li in their spectra looking for correlations between the Li abundance and the other physical parameters, in the aim of establishing observational criteria for understanding the conditions for the occurrence of the deep mixing phenomena to which the production of Li is currently attributed.

We present measurements of equivalent widths of the UV, presumably photospheric lines: C III 1247 Å, N III 1748 Å, N III 1752 Å, N IV 1718 Å and He II 1640 Å in high-resolution IUE spectra of 24 galactic OB supergiants. Equivalent widths measured from the observed spectra have been compared with their counterparts in the Tlusty NLTE synthetic spectra. We discuss possibilities of static plan-parallel model to reproduce observed UV spectra of hot massive stars and possible reasons why observations differ from the model so much.

We obtained CCD observations of the open cluster NGC 752 with the 1.8m Vatican Advanced Technology Telescope (Mt. Graham, Arizona) with a 4K CCD camera and eight intermediate-band filters of the Stromvil (Strömgren + Vilnius) system. Four 12′ × 12′ fields were observed, covering the central part of the cluster. The good-quality multicolor data made it possible to obtain precise estimates of distance moduli, metallicity and foreground reddening for individual stars down to the limiting magnitude, V = 17.5, enabling photometric identification of faint cluster members. The new observations provide an extension of the lower main sequence to three magnitudes beyond the previous (photographic) limit. A relatively small number of photometric members identified at fainter magnitudes seems to be indicative of actual dissolution of the cluster from the low-mass end.

We present 2-D mapping and analysis of the gaseous kinematics of the inner 7″ × 5″ of one of nearest (z = 0.0414) and brightest post-starburst quasars (PSQ) by using spectra obtained with the Integral Field Unit (IFU) of the Gemini Multi-Object Spectrograph on the Gemini North Telescope (Allington-Smith et al. 2002). Such quasars are broad-lined AGNs that also show the Balmer jumps and the high-order Balmer absorption lines from A stars typical of massive post-starburst populations of a few hundred Myrs (Brotherton et al. 2007). From measurements of the emission-line profiles, we constructed two-dimensional maps for the flux distributions, line ratios, radial velocities and gas velocity dispersions for the Hβ and [Oiii] emitting gas, similar to those of previous studies by our group (e.g., Barbosa et al. 2009).

In this work, we analyze observations of the solar radius at 22 and 43 GHz obtained with the 13.7 m antenna of the Itapetinga Radio Observatory (Atibaia, Brazil) and at submillimeter-wave frequencies, 212 and 405 GHz, obtained by the Solar Submillimeter-wave Telescope (SST) (El Leoncito, San Juan, Argentina). The radius is defined as the limb position where the intensity is equal to half of the quiet Sun value. These measured radii are then compared with those predicted by a model of the solar atmosphere proposed by Selhorst, Silva, and Costa (2005). The results show that at 22 and 43 GHz, the emission comes from regions high in the chromosphere. Furthermore, the Itapetinga observations yield radii of 985” ± 5” and 981” ± 6”, at 22 and 43 GHz respectively, consistent with the theoretical positions in the atmosphere. On other hand, the submillimeter observations resulted in a mean radius of 972” ± 3” and 975” ± 5” at 212 and 405 GHz, respectively, considered equal within the uncertainties. The latter results can be explained by the origin of the emission being very close to the region of minimum temperature, between the photosphere and chromosphere. This is a dynamic region largely affected by many solar features, like spicules and plages.

After the success of Deep Impact mission to hit the nucleus of Comet 9P/Tempel 1 with an impactor, the concerns are turned now to the possible reutilization of this dormant flyby spacecraft in the study of another comet, for only about 10% of the cost of the original mission. Comet 103P/Hartley 2 on UT 2010 October 11 is the most attractive target in terms of available fuel at rendezvous and arrival time at the comet. In addition, the comet has a low inclination so that major orbital plane changes in the spacecraft trajectory are unnecessary. In an effort to provide information concerning the planning of this new NASA EPOXI space mission of opportunity, we use in this work, visual magnitudes measurements available from International Comet Quarterly (ICQ) to obtain, applying the Semi-Empirical Method of Visual Magnitudes - SEMVM (de Almeida, Singh, & Huebner 1997), the water production rates (in molecules/s) related to its perihelion passage of 1997. When associated to the water vaporization theory of Delsemme (1982), these rates allowed the acquisition of the minimum dimension for the effective nuclear radius of the comet. The water production rates were then converted into gas production rates (in g/s) so that, with the help of the strong correlation between gas and dust found for 12 periodic comets and 3 non-period comets (Trevisan Sanzovo 2006), we obtained the dust loss rates (in g/s), its behavior with the heliocentric distance and the dust-to-gas ratios in this physically attractive rendezvous target-comet to Deep Impact spacecraft at a closest approach of 700 km.
