We present a 10 day-long astronomical discovery class for children from 10 up to 12 years old. “Classical” workshops dealing with constellations, sky maps, sundiala, rocket construction and launching, Sun and deep sky observations are proposed to children. In addition, we present our own workshops that can be achieved by children as research projects in a scientific, literary or in an artistic way. In this context, the rôle of astronomy is both educational and social for children. Scientific rudiments are passed on from scientific educators to pupils and from pupils to their families. Astronomy is an unifying science for everyone.

The Galactic Center constitutes the best astrophysical evidence for the existence of black holes, and it is the ideal laboratory for studying physics in the vicinity of such objects. The combination of infrared observations of three dimensional orbits of stars within the central light days and the extreme compactness and motionlessness of the radio-counterpart of the gravitational center have shown beyond any reasonable doubt that the Galactic Center harbors a supermassive black hole. The flaring activity from the black hole gives first insights to the physical processes close to the last stable orbit. Here I review the current state of observations and theory of the Galactic Center black hole and give an update on the latest results. I also outline the next steps towards even higher angular resolution observations, which give promise to directly probe the physics and space-time curvature just outside the event horizon.

We present results from a high resolution cosmological galaxy formation simulation called Mare Nostrum and a ultra-high resimulation of the first 500 million years of a single, Milky Way (MW) sized galaxy. Using the cosmological run, we measure UV luminosity functions and assess their sensitivity to both cosmological parameters and dust extinction. We find remarkably good agreement with the existing data over the redshift range 4 < z < 7 provided we adopt the favoured cosmology (WMAP 5 year parameters) and a self-consistent treatment of the dust. Cranking up the resolution, we then study in detail a z = 9 protogalaxy sitting at the intersection of cold gas filaments. This high-z MW progenitor grows a dense, rapidly spinning, thin disk which undergoes gravitational fragmention. Star formation in the resulting gas clumps rapidly turns them into globular clusters. A far reaching galactic wind develops, co-powered by the protogalaxy and its cohort of smaller companions populating the filaments. Despite such an impressive blow out, the smooth filamentary material is hardly affected at these redshifts.

We have gathered a representative sample of 88 intermediate mass galaxies at z~0.6 and have provided robust estimates of their gas phase metallicity based on the strong line method R23. We have found that these galaxies have undergone a strong evolution of their metal content during the last 8 Gyrs. We confirmed the shift about ~0.3dex to lower abundance of the M-Z relation at z~0.6 found by Liang et al. 2006. This result shows that the evolution of the gas phase is still active down to z=0.4 and that the close box model is not a valid scenario for local spiral progenitors.

In 2007-2008 the authors found many magnetite microspheric particles in ground samples at the Trans-Carpathians mountains near the village of Tur'yi Remety. Their diameters are of 0.1 - 0.3 mm and they have Ni, Co and Cr as chemical composition. We think that these particles are part of the bright bolide of EN171101 which exploded above Trans-Carpathians mountains on Nov. 17, 2001.

We combine 610 MHz GMRT data, 1.4 GHz VLA data, and 1.4 GHz WSRT observations, encompassing a ~ 4 square degree field centered on the verification strip of the Spitzer First Look Survey field, to study radio sources down to fluxes of about 0.1 mJy. The spectral index (Figure 1) analysis shows that the majority of multi-component sources are steep-spectrum sources. Nevertheless the spread in the spectral distribution is wide, with a significant number of ultra-steep, flat or inverted sources, possibly indicating a wider range of accretion modes in fainter samples. By cross-correlating 107 multi-component radio sources with the optical catalogues of Marleau et al. (2007) and Papovich et al. (2006), 23 objects were identified.

Thanks to the high multiplex and efficiency of Giraffe at the VLT we have been able for the first time to observe the Li I doublet in the Main Sequence stars of a globular cluster. At the same time we observed Li in a sample of Sub-Giant stars of the same B-V colour.

Our final sample is composed of 84 SG stars and 79 MS stars. In spite of the fact that SG and MS span the same temperature range we find that the equivalent widths of the Li I doublet in SG stars are systematically larger than those in MS stars, suggesting a higher Li content among SG stars. This is confirmed by our quantitative analysis carried out making use of 1D hydrostatic plane-parallel models and 3D hydrodynamical simulations of the stellar atmospheres.

We derived the effective temperatures of stars in our the sample from Hα fitting. Theoretical profiles were computed using 3D hydrodynamical simulations and 1D ATLAS models. Therefore, we are able to determined 1D and 3D-based effective temperatures. We then infer Li abundances taking into account non-local thermodynamical equilibrium effects when using both 1D and 3D models.

We find that SG stars have a mean Li abundance higher by 0.1 dex than MS stars. This result is obtained using both 1D and 3D models. We also detect a positive slope of Li abundance with effective temperature, the higher the temperature the higher the Li abundance, both for SG and MS stars, although the slope is slightly steeper for MS stars. These results provide an unambiguous evidence that the Li abundance changes with evolutionary status.

The physical mechanisms responsible for this behaviour are not yet clear, and none of the existing models seems to describe accurately these observations. Based on these conclusions, we believe that the cosmological lithium problem still remains an open question.

Free energy stored in the magnetic field is the source that powers solar and stellar activity at all temporal and spatial scales. The energy released during transient atmospheric events is contained in current-carrying magnetic fields that have emerged twisted and may be further stressed via motions in the lower atmospheric layers (i.e. loop-footpoint motions). Magnetic reconnection is thought to be the mechanism through which the stored magnetic energy is transformed into kinetic energy of accelerated particles and mass flows, and radiative energy along the whole electromagnetic spectrum. This mechanism works efficiently at scale lengths much below the spatial resolution of even the highest resolution solar instruments; however, it may imply a large-scale restructuring of the magnetic field inferred indirectly from the combined analysis of observations and models of the magnetic field topology. The aftermath of magnetic energy release includes events ranging from nanoflares, which are below our detection limit, to powerful flares, which may be accompanied by the ejection of large amounts of plasma and magnetic field (so called coronal mass ejections, CMEs), depending on the amount of total available free magnetic energy, the magnetic flux density distribution, the magnetic field configuration, etc. We describe key observational signatures of flares and CMEs on the Sun, their magnetic field topology, and discuss how the combined analysis of solar and interplanetary observations can be used to constrain the flare/CME ejection mechanism.

We review the interaction in intermediate and high mass stars between their evolution and magnetic and chemical properties. We describe the theory of Ap-star ‘fossil’ fields, before touching on the expected secular diffusive processes which give rise to evolution of the field. We then present recent results from a spectropolarimetric survey of Herbig Ae/Be stars, showing that magnetic fields of the kind seen on the main-sequence already exist during the pre-main sequence phase, in agreement with fossil field theory, and that the origin of the slow rotation of Ap/Bp stars also lies early in the pre-main sequence evolution; we also present results confirming a lack of stars with fields below a few hundred gauss. We then seek which macroscopic motions compete with atomic diffusion in determining the surface abundances of AmFm stars. While turbulent transport and mass loss, in competition with atomic diffusion, are both able to explain observed surface abundances, the interior abundance distribution is different enough to potentially lead to a test using asterosismology. Finally we review progress on the turbulence-driving and mixing processes in stellar radiative zones.

Blue stragglers have been found in all populations. They are important in both stellar evolution and stellar population synthesis. Much evidence shows that blue stragglers are relevant to primordial binaries. Here, we summarize the links between binary evolution and blue stragglers, describe the characteristics of blue stragglers originating from different binary evolutionary channels and show their consequences for binary population synthesis, such as for the integrated spectral-energy distribution, the colour–magnitude diagram, their specific frequency, and their influence on colours, etc.

It is shown, that the explosion of the bolide above the Mediterranean sea on July, 6th 2002 with a high probability was a fragment of an icy cometary nucleus which initial weight was equal approximately to 7 ⋅ 108 grams. This follows from the determined energy of the outburst equal to 26kT of TNT (Brown et al. 2002). We think that this energy refers to the height of the maximal braking of the body in the Earth's atmosphere. At the speed of 20.3 km/s accepted by authors, the weight of a body at this height is equal 5 ⋅ 108 gr, and at the entrance in the atmosphere it was approximately of 7 ⋅ 108 gr.

We present two ongoing studies of gas phase abundances around high redshift quasars. First, we examine broad emission line (BEL) metallicities for 29 quasars with 2.3 < z < 4.6 and far-infrared (far-IR) luminosities (LFIR) from 1013.4 to ≤ 1012.2 L⊙, corresponding to star formation rates (SFRs) of 6740 to ≤ 1360 M⊙ yr−1. Quasar samples sorted by LFIR might represent an evolutionary sequence if SFRs in quasar hosts generally diminish across quasar lifetimes. We create three composite spectra from rest-frame ultra-violet Sloan Digital Sky Survey spectra with increasing far-IR luminosity. We measure the N V(λ1240)/C IV(λ1550) and Si IV(λ1397)+O IV](λ1402)/C IV(λ1550) emission line flux ratios for each composite and find uniformly high (~5-10 times solar) metallicities for the three composites, and no evidence for changes in metal enrichment with changes in ongoing SFR. Second, we present preliminary results from the largest ever survey of high resolution associated absorption line (AAL) region metallicities and physical properties in a sample of high redshift (z > 3) quasars. This includes five quasars with previously known AALs at z > 4 and two well measured z ~3 quasars with unusually rich absorption spectra. We determine well-constrained metallicities of about twice solar for five AAL systems. We find a range of lower limits for AAL metallicities in the z > 4 quasars from 1/100ths solar to 3 times solar. Overall, these results for typically super-solar gas-phase metallicities near quasars are consistent with evolutionary schemes where the major episodes of star formation in the host galaxies occur before the visibly luminous quasar phase. High SFRs (comparable to ULIRGs) in the host galaxies are not clearly linked to younger or chemically less mature quasar environments.

A review is given of the topics discussed during IAU Symposium 266 on star clusters, and of the major results presented. The current state of the art is discussed, together with potential prospects which may help to direct and generate future advances.

Very strong evidence suggests that Sagittarius A*, a compact radio source at the center of the Milky Way, marks the position of a super massive black hole. The proximity of Sgr A* in combination with its mass makes its apparent event horizon the largest of any black hole candidate in the universe and presents us with a unique opportunity to observe strong-field GR effects. Recent millimeter very long baseline interferometric observations of Sgr A* have demonstrated the existence of structures on scales comparable to the Schwarzschild radius. These observations already provide strong evidence in support of the existence of an event horizon. (Sub)Millimeter VLBI observations in the near future will combine the angular resolution necessary to identify the overall morphology of quiescent emission, such as an accretion disk or outflow, with a fine enough time resolution to detect possible periodicity in the variable component of emission. In the next few years, it may be possible to identify the spin of the black hole in Sgr A*, either by detecting the periodic signature of hot spots at the innermost stable circular orbit or parameter estimation in models of the quiescent emission. Longer term, a (sub)millimeter VLBI “Event Horizon Telescope” will be able to produce images of the Galactic center emission to the see the silhouette predicted by general relativistic lensing. These techniques are also applicable to the black hole in M87, where black hole spin may be key to understanding the jet-launching region.

We present subarcsecond resolution mid-infrared (mid-IR) photometry in the range from 8 to 20 μm of 18 nearby Seyfert galaxies, reporting high spatial resolution nuclear fluxes for the entire sample (see Table 3 of Ramos Almeida et al. 2009). We construct spectral energy distributions (SEDs) that the AGN dominates, relatively uncontaminated by starlight, adding near-IR measurements from the literature at similar angular resolution. We find that the IR SEDs of intermediate-type Seyferts are flatter and present higher 10 to 18 μm ratios than those of Seyfert 2 (Sy2) galaxies.

We discuss our ongoing project analyzing N-body/smoothed-particle hydrodynamics simulations of isolated and merging galaxies, performed using GADGET-2 (Springel 2005), with the 3-D adaptive grid, polychromatic Monte Carlo radiative transfer code SUNRISE (Jonsson 2006). We apply commonly used UV, optical, and IR star formation rate (SFR) indicators to the integrated spectral energy distributions (SEDs) of the simulated galaxies in order to determine how well the SFR indicators recover the instantaneous SFR in the simulations. The models underlying each SFR indicator must necessarily make assumptions about physical properties of the galaxies, e.g., the star formation history (SFH), whereas all such properties are known in the simulations. This enables us to test and compare SFR indicators in a way that is complementary to observational studies. We present one preliminary result of interest: even after correcting the Hα luminosity for dust using the Calzetti et al. (2000) attenuation law the SFR is significantly underestimated for simulated galaxies with SFR ≳ 10 M⊙ yr−1.

The “stellar” solution to the cosmological lithium problem proposes that surface depletion of lithium in low-mass, metal-poor stars can reconcile the lower abundances found for Galactic halo stars with the primordial prediction. Globular clusters are ideal environments for studies of the surface evolution of lithium, with large number statistics possible to obtain for main sequence stars as well as giants. We discuss the Li abundances measured for >450 stars in the globular cluster NGC 6397, focusing on the evidence for lithium depletion and especially highlighting how the inferred abundances and interpretations are affected by early cluster self-enrichment and systematic uncertainties in the effective temperature determination.

The TENPLA project (pronounced as “ten-pla”, like a famous Japanese food “Tempura”) is designed to communicate Astronomy with the public in Japan. We have been working to suggest various ways to enjoy astronomy. We have organised star gazing parties, science cafés, and lectures. We have made many goodies which make people interested in astronomy (e.g. “Astronomical Toilet Paper”). We have also provided opportunities to communicate with each other for people who have interests in such activities. In this paper we present a broad overview of the TENPLA project.

The body of photometric and astrometric data on stars in the Galaxy has been growing very fast in recent years (Hipparcos/Tycho, OGLE-3, 2-Mass, DENIS, UCAC2, SDSS, RAVE, Pan Starrs, Hermes, . . .) and in two years ESA will launch the Gaia satellite, which will measure astrometric data of unprecedented precision for a billion stars. On account of our position within the Galaxy and the complex observational biases that are built into most catalogues, dynamical models of the Galaxy are a prerequisite full exploitation of these catalogues. On account of the enormous detail in which we can observe the Galaxy, models of great sophistication are required. Moreover, in addition to models we require algorithms for observing them with the same errors and biases as occur in real observational programs, and statistical algorithms for determining the extent to which a model is compatible with a given body of data.

JD5 reviewed the status of our knowledge of the Galaxy, the different ways in which we could model the Galaxy, and what will be required to extract our science goals from the data that will be on hand when the Gaia Catalogue becomes available.

We have obtained high resolution, high S/N spectra of the RS CVn binary IM Peg using UVES spectrograph at Kueyen 8.2m telescope of ESO VLT. We use Doppler imaging techniques to obtain stellar surface temperature maps from the UVES data. The TempMap code allows us to use surface differential rotation as an input parameter and thus to try to construct the rotation pattern on the stellar surface as part of the inversion process. The UVES observations are combined with spectroscopic observations from another time period obtained at the STELLA observatory. We obtain stellar surface temperature maps also from these spectra. These Doppler images are used to study the magnetic activity and surface differential rotation on IM Peg.
