We present the results of recent surveys in the 44GHz methanol maser line toward regions of massive star formation using the Haystack 37m telescope and the VLA. We discuss a possible shock origin of this maser line and present evidence for variability from multi-epoch observations of selected sources.

A compiled catalogue consisting of more than 22000 reference stars in the range of 10m – 16m obtained with 235 fields of δ from −17° to +80° around extragalactic radio sources (ERS) selected from the ICRF list. Initial catalogues were obtained from photographic (PG) and CCD observations.

There are a few ways to estimate the number of massive open clusters expected in the disk of the Milky Way, such as the total star formation rate of the Galaxy, or the open cluster mass function extrapolated to include the entire Galaxy. Surprisingly, they give similar predictions: the Milky Way should contain about 100 clusters as massive as 30 Doradus. Are we seeing them? We look closely at these predictions and compare them to what has been found so far in our Galaxy. We present sophisticated image simulations our group is developing to estimate the selection biases faced by current infrared searches for these massive clusters.

The cosmic ultraviolet background (UVB) heats the intergalactic medium (IGM), as a result the gas in dark matter halos below a certain mass is too hot to cool within a Hubble time. The UVB effectively suppresses the formation of dwarf galaxies. Using high resolution cosmological hydrodynamical simulations we show that photo heating leads to small baryon fractions in halos below ~ 6× 109h−1M⊙, independent of the cosmic environment. The simulations are carried out assuming a homogeneous UVB with flux densities as given by Haardt, &, Madau (1996). A halo may stop to condense gas significantly after the universe is reionised, namely when its mass falls below the characteristic mass scale set by the photo heating. Assuming a spherical halo model we derive this characteristic mass analytically and identify the main mechanisms that prevent the gas from cooling in small halos. The theoretically derived characteristic mass is smaller than the one obtained from observations. Increasing the energy per ionising photon by a factor between four and eight would be sufficient to reconcile both. This is equivalent to an average temperature of the IGM of ~ 104K. In this sense the faint end of the luminosity function may serve as a calorimeter for the IGM.

We report on the discovery of a surprising observed correlation between the slope of the low-mass stellar global mass function (GMF) of globular clusters (GCs) and their central concentration parameter c = log(rt/rc), i.e. the logarithmic ratio of tidal and core radii. This result is based on the analysis of a sample of twenty Galactic GCs, with solid GMF measurements from deep HST or VLT data, representative of the entire population of Milky Way GCs. While all high-concentration clusters in the sample have a steep GMF, low-concentration clusters tend to have a flatter GMF implying that they have lost many stars via evaporation or tidal stripping. No GCs are found with a flat GMF and high central concentration. This finding appears counter-intuitive, since the same two-body relaxation mechanism that causes stars to evaporate and the cluster to eventually dissolve should also lead to higher central density and possibly core-collapse. Therefore, severely depleted GCs should be in a post core-collapse state, contrary to what is suggested by their low concentration. Several hypotheses can be put forth to explain the observed trend, none of which however seems completely satisfactory. It is likely that GCs with a flat GMF have a much denser and smaller core than suggested by their surface brightness profile and may well be undergoing collapse at present. It is, therefore, likely that the number of post core-collapse clusters in the Galaxy is much larger than thought so far.

The detection of rapidly damped transverse oscillations in coronal loops by Aschwanden et al. (1999) and Nakariakov et al. (1999) gave a strong impetus to the study of MHD waves and their damping. The common interpretation of the observations of these oscillations is based on kink modes. This paper reviews how the observed period and damping time can be reproduced by MHD wave theory when non-uniform equilibrium models are considered that have a transversal variation of the local Alfven velocity. The key point here is that resonant absorption cannot be avoided and occurs as natural damping mechanism for kink waves in non-uniform equilibrium models. The present paper starts with work by Hollweg & Yang (1988) and discusses subsequent developments in theory and their applications to seismology of coronal loops. It addresses the consistent use of observations of periods and damping times as seismological tools within the framework of resonant absorption. It shows that within the framework of resonant absorption infinitely many equilibrium models can reproduce the observed values of periods and damping times.

We focus on the astrobiological effects of photospheric radiation produced by main-sequence stars of spectral types F, G, K, and M. The photospheric radiation is represented by using realistic spectra, taking into account millions or hundred of millions of lines for atoms and molecules. DNA is taken as a proxy for carbon-based macromolecules, assumed to be the chemical centerpiece of extraterrestrial life forms. Emphasis is placed on the investigation of the radiative environment in conservative as well as generalized habitable zones.

I review, from an observational perspective, the interactions of accretion discs with magnetic fields in cataclysmic variable stars. I start with systems where the accretion flows via a stream, and discuss the circumstances in which the stream forms into an accretion disc, pointing to stars which are close to this transition. I then turn to disc-fed systems and discuss what we know about how material threads on to field lines, as deduced from the pattern of accretion footprints on the white dwarf. I discuss whether distortions of the field lines are related to accretion torques and the changing spin periods of the white dwarfs. I also review the effect on the disc–magnetosphere interaction of disc-instability outbursts. Lastly, I discuss the temporary, dynamo-driven magnetospheres thought to occur in dwarf-nova outbursts, and whether slow-moving waves are excited at the inner edges of the disc.

The meeting of the Working Group on standard stars (WG-SS) opened under the chairmanship of Corbally. Gray, as editor, gave a report on the Standard Stars Newsletter (SSN). Through a round of thanks given to Gray, it was recognized by the two dozen present that this publication is the major vehicle between WG-SS meetings for achieving its tasks, namely promoting and communicating work on standard stars. Using the gravitational torque indicator Qb, we derive the distribution of bar strengths for a sample of early-type disk galaxies. The sample is part of the Near-Infrared S0 Survey (NIRS0S), designed to examine the properties of bars, bulges, and disks in galaxies classified as types S0− to Sa. Although the survey is only partly finished, we find that the distribution of bar strengths in S0 galaxies differs from that in spirals by lacking an extended tail to high values of Qb. No S0 in our current sample has Qb > 0.25, while spirals extend to Qb ≈ 0.7. Bars having Qb > 0.25 first appear among S0/a to Sa galaxies.

Evolution of self-gravitating rotating dense stellar systems (e.g. globular clusters) with embedded black holes is investigated. The interplay between velocity diffusion due to relaxation and black hole star accretion is followed together with cluster differential rotation using 2D+1 Fokker Planck numerical methods. The models can reproduce the Bahcall-Wolf f ∝ E1/4 (∝ r−7/4) cusp inside the zone of influence of the black hole. Angular momentum transport and star accretion processes support the development of central rotation in relaxation time scales, before re-expansion and cluster dissolution due to mass loss in the tidal field of a parent galaxy. Gravogyro and gravothermal instabilities conduce the system to a faster evolution leading to shorter collapse times with respect to models without black hole.

Division V provides a joint forum for the study of stellar variability in all its manifestations, whether due to pulsation, surface inhomogeneities, evolutionary changes, or to eclipses and other phenomena specifically related to double and multiple stars.

Observations in EUV lines of the solar corona revealed large scale propagating waves generated by eruptive events able to travel across the solar disk for large distances. In the low corona, CMEs are known to generate, e.g. EIT waves which can be used to sample the coronal local and global magnetic field. This contribution presents theoretical models for finding values of magnetic field in the quiet Sun and coronal loops based on the interaction of global waves and local coronal loops as well as results on the generation and propagation of EIT waves. The physical connection between local and global solar coronal events (e.g. flares, EIT waves and coronal loop oscillations) will also be explored.

Planet searches around evolved giant stars are bringing new insights to planet formation theories by virtue of the broader stellar mass range of the host stars compared to the solar-type stars that have been the subject of most current planet searches programs. These searches among giant stars are producing extremely interesting results. Contrary to main sequence stars planet-hosting giants do not show a tendency of being more metal rich. Even if limited, the statistics also suggest a higher frequency of giant planets (at least 10%) that are more massive compared to solar-type main sequence stars.

The interpretation of these results is not straightforward. We propose that the lack of a metallicity-planet connection among giant stars is due to pollution of the star while on the main sequence, followed by dillution during the giant phase. We also suggest that the higher mass and frequency of the planets are due to the higher stellar mass. Even if these results do not favor a specific formation scenario, they suggest that planetary formation might be more complex than what has been proposed so far, perhaps with two mechanisms at work and one or the other dominating according to the stellar mass. We finally stress as the detailed study of the host stars and of the parent sample is essential to derive firm conclusions.

The future PRIMA facility at the Very Large Telescope Interferometer (VLTI) in astrometric mode offers the possibility to perform relative narrow-angle astrometry with 10 micro-arcsecond accuracy. This is achieved with a dual-beam interferometer concept, where a reference star and the scientific target, confined in a 60 arcsecond field, are observed simultaneously. The angular separation of the two stellar objects gives rise to an optical delay in the interferometer, which is measured by the Fringe Sensor Unit (FSU) and an internal laser metrology. PRIMA is using two FSU fringe detectors, each observing the interference of stellar beams coming from one of the two objects and measuring the corresponding phase and group delay. The astrometric observable, yielding the angular separation, is deduced from the group delay difference observed between the two objects. In addition, the FSU phase delay estimate is used as error signal for the fringe stabilisation loop of the VLTI. Both functions of the FSU require high precision fringe phase measurements with a goal of 1 nm rms (corresponding to λ/2000). These can only be achieved by applying a calibration procedure prior to the observing run. We discuss the FSU measurement principle and the applied algorithms. The calibration strategy and the methods used to derive the calibration parameters are presented. Special attention is given to the achieved measurement linearity and repeatability. The quality of the FSU calibration is crucial in order to achieve the ultimate accuracy and to fulfill the primary objective of PRIMA astrometry: the detection and characterisation of extrasolar planetary systems.

I present results from an ongoing survey to study galaxies associated with damped Lyman-α (DLA) systems at redshifts z>2. Integral field spectroscopy is used to search for Lyα emission line objects at the wavelengths where the emission from the quasars have been absorbed by the DLAs. The DLA galaxy candidates detected in this survey are found at distances of 10–20 kpc from the quasar line of sight, implying that galaxies are surrounded by neutral hydrogen at large distances. If we assume that the distribution of neutral gas is exponential, the scale length of the neutral gas is ~6 kpc, similar to large disk galaxies in the local Universe. The emission line luminosities imply smaller star formation rates compared to other high redshift galaxies found in luminosity selected samples.

A supergiants are objects in transition from the blue to the red (and vice versa) in the uppermost HRD. They are the intrinsically brightest “normal” stars at visual light with absolute visual magnitudes up to −9. They are ideal to study young stellar populations in galaxies beyond the Local Group to determine chemical composition and evolution, interstellar extinction, reddening laws and distances. We discuss most recent results on the quantitative spectral analysis of such objects in galaxies beyond the Local Group based on medium and low resolution spectra obtained with the ESO VLT and Keck. We describe the analysis method including the determination of metallicity and metallicity gradients. A new method to measure accurate extragalactic distances based on the stellar gravities and effective temperatures is presented, the flux weighted gravity – luminosity relationship (FGLR). The FGLR is a purely spectroscopic method, which overcomes the uncertainties introduced by interstellar extinction and variations of metallicity, which plague all photometric stellar distance determination methods. We discuss the perspectives of future work using the giant ground-based telescopes of the next generation such as the TMT, the GMT and the E-ELT.

OH masers are sensitive probes of the kinematics, physical conditions, and magnetic fields in star-forming regions. The maser site OH 330.953-0.182 has been studied using the Long Baseline Array of the Australia Telescope National Facility. Simultaneous observations of the 1665- and 1667-MHz hydroxyl ground-state transitions yield a series of maps at velocity spacing 0.09kms−1, in both right- and left-hand circular polarization, with tenth-arcsec spatial resolution. Several clusters of maser spots have been detected within a five-arcsec region. Eight Zeeman pairs were found, and in one case, at 1665 MHz, there is a nearby 1667-MHz pair indicating a similar value of magnetic field and velocity. Over the whole site, all magnetic field estimates are toward us (negative), and range from -3.7 to -5.8 mG. We also compared the morphology and kinematics of the 1665- and 1667-MHz maser spots with those from the excited state of OH at 6035 MHz and from methanol at 6668 MHz.

We present high sensitivity radio polarimetric (VLA) observations of a galaxy with strong orbital resonances – NGC 4736. The total radio intensity at 8.4 GHz covers smoothly the whole galaxy bulge and reveals a distinct ring of radio emission closely related to the ring morphology visible in infrared, CO and Hα emission. However, the magnetic field reveals a very coherent spiral pattern. The magnetic field vectors are crossing the inner starbursting ring, the dust lanes within the ring and other rather circularly shaped features visible in other gas traces. Either the magnetic field uncovers the pattern of gas motions not seen in other spectral ranges, or the spiral magnetic field is of a pure dynamo origin, ignoring the ringed morphology of the galaxy.

Herbig Ae/Be stars are pre-main-sequence stars of intermediate mass, which are still accreting material from their environment, probably via a disk composed of gas and dust. Here we present a recent study of the geometry of the inner (AU-scale) circumstellar region around the Herbig Be star MWC 147 using long-baseline interferometry. By combining for the first time near- and mid-infrared spectro-interferometry on a Herbig star, our VLTI/AMBER and VLTI/MIDI data constrain not only the geometry of the brightness distribution, but also the radial temperature distribution in the disk. The emission from MWC 147 is clearly resolved and has a characteristic physical size of ∼1.3 AU and ∼9 AU at 2.2 μm and 11 μm respectively. This increase in apparent size towards longer wavelengths is much steeper than predicted by analytic disk models assuming power-law radial temperature distributions. For a detailed modeling of the interferometric data and the spectral energy distribution of MWC 147, we employ 2-D frequency-dependent radiation transfer simulations. This analysis shows that passive irradiated Keplerian dust disks can easily fit the SED, but predict much lower visibilities than observed, so these models can clearly be ruled out. Models of a Keplerian disk with emission from an optically thick inner gaseous accretion disk (inside the dust sublimation zone), however, yield a good fit of the SED and simultaneously reproduce the observed near- and mid-infrared visibilities. We conclude that the near-infrared continuum emission from MWC 147 is dominated by accretion luminosity emerging from an optically thick inner gaseous disk, while the mid-infrared emission also contains strong contributions from the passive irradiated dust disk.
