Existence and uniqueness theorems are proved for the solution of a Dirichlet-Neumann-Third mixed boundary value problem for the Helmholtz equation in ℝ3. The proofs make use of an equivalent system of two integral equations of the second kind.

Stable homotopy decompositions of the classifying spaces of the gauge groups of principal SO(3) and U(2)-bundles over the sphere S2 are obtained using a fibrewise stable splitting theorem for the loop space of an unreduced suspension. The stable decomposition is related to a description of the integral cohomology ring.

In this paper we study a class of 2-generator 2-relator groups G(m) and show that they are all finite. Moreover, two infinite subclasses are soluble of derived length 4.

We consider the Cauchy problem for the nonlinear Schrödinger equation on the whole space. After introducing a weaker concept of finite speed of propagation, we show that the concatenation of initial data gives rise to solutions whose time of existence increases as one translates one of the initial data. Moreover, we show that, given global decaying solutions with initial data u0, v0, if |y| is large, then the concatenated initial data u0 + v0(· − y) gives rise to globally decaying solutions.

Let us consider the set SA(Rn) of rapidly decreasing functions G: Rn → A, where A is a separable C*-algebra. We prove a version of the Calderón–Vaillancourt theorem for pseudodifferential operators acting on SA(Rn) whose symbol is A-valued. Given a skew-symmetric matrix, J, we prove that a pseudodifferential operator that commutes with G(x + JD), G ∈ SA(Rn), is of the form F(x − JD), for F a C∞-function with bounded derivatives of all orders.

Let 0 < α ≤ 1 and let M+α be the Cesàro maximal operator of order α defined by In this work we characterize the pairs of measurable, positive and locally integrable functions (u, v) for which there exists a constant C > 0 such that the inequality holds for all λ > 0 and every f in the Orlicz space LΦ(v). We also characterize the measurable, positive and locally integrable functions w such that the integral inequality holds for every f ∈ LΦ(w). The discrete versions of this results allow us, by techniques of transference, to prove weighted inequalities for the Cesàro maximal ergodic operator associated with an invertible measurable transformation, T, which preserves the measure.

Finally, we give sufficient conditions on w for the convergence of the sequence of Cesàro-α ergodic averages for all functions in the weighted Orlicz space LΦ(w).

Recently, Sarrión and the authors gave a sufficient condition on invertible Lamperti operators on Lp which guarantees the convergence in the Cesàro-α sense of the ergodic averages and the ergodic Hilbert transform for all f ∈ Lp with p > 1/(1 + α) and −1 < α ≤ 0. The result does not hold for the space L1/(1 + α). In this paper we give a positive result for the smaller Lorentz space L1/(1 + α),1.

If X is a compact Hausdorff space and E a dual Banach space, let C(X, Eσ*) denote the Banach space of continuous functions F from X to E when the latter space is provided with its weak * topology, normed by . It is shown that if X and Y are extremally disconnected compact Hausdorff spaces and E is a uniformly convex Banach space, then the existence of an isometry between C(X, Eσ*) and C(Y, Eσ*) implies that X and Y are homeomorphic.

We establish existence results for a class of semilinear elliptic equations with exponential nonlinearity by studying a suitable eigenvalue problem. We also establish a uniqueness result for those equations by making use of the implicit function theorem.

The aim of this paper is to characterise sets of anisotropic weighted capacity zero. In this we generalise previous known results for the isotropic equivalent. A particular case of this zero capacity set is used to generalise removable singularity results for weak solutions of degenerate quasilinear parabolic equations and for their elliptic equivalent when its structure is still essentially isotropic, with the anisotropy confined to the mixed norms of the generalised Lebesgue spaces involved.

Let F be a real analytic function on a real analytic manifold X. Let P be a linear differential operator on X such that , where Q is an ordinary differential operator with analytic coefficients whose singular points are all regular. For each (isolated) critical value z of F, we construct locally an F-invariant solution u of the equation Pu - v, v being an arbitrary F-invariant distribution supported in F−1(z). The solution u is constructed explicitly in the form of a series of F-invariant distributions.

The existence and nonexistence of semi-trivial or coexistence steady-state solutions of one-dimensional competition models in an unstirred chemostat are studied by establishing new results on systems of Hammerstein integral equations via the classical fixed point index theory. We provide three ranges for the two parameters involved in the competition models under which the models have no semi-trivial and coexistence steady-state solutions or have semi-trivial steady-state solutions but no coexistence steady-state solutions or have semi-trivial or coexistence steady-state solutions. It remains open to find the largest range for the two parameters under which the models have only coexistence steady-state solutions. We apply the new results on systems of Hammerstein integral equations to obtain results on steady-state solutions of systems of reaction-diffusion equations with general separated boundary conditions. Such type of results have not been studied in the literature. However, these results are very useful for studying the competition models in an unstirred chemostat. Our results on Hammerstein integral equations and differential equations generalize and improve some previous results.

We prove that there are no regular algebraic hypersurfaces with non-zero constant mean curvature in the Euclidean space $\mathbb {R}^{n+1},\,\;n\geq 2,$ defined by polynomials of odd degree. Also we prove that the hyperspheres and the round cylinders are the only regular algebraic hypersurfaces with non-zero constant mean curvature in $\mathbb {R}^{n+1}, n\geq 2,$ defined by polynomials of degree less than or equal to three. These results give partial answers to a question raised by Barbosa and do Carmo.

Starting from three-dimensional non-linear elasticity under the restriction of incompressibility, we derive reduced models to capture the behaviour of strings in response to external forces. Our Γ-convergence analysis of the constrained energy functionals in the limit of shrinking cross-sections gives rise to explicit one-dimensional limit energies. The latter depend on the scaling of the applied forces. The effect of local volume preservation is reflected either in their energy densities through a constrained minimization over the cross-section variables or in the class of admissible deformations. Interestingly, all scaling regimes allow for compression and/or stretching of the string. The main difficulty in the proof of the Γ-limit is to establish recovery sequences that accommodate the non-linear differential constraint imposed by the incompressibility. To this end, we modify classical constructions in the unconstrained case with the help of an inner perturbation argument tailored for 3d-1d dimension reduction problems.

In this paper, we give the generic classification of the singularities of 3-parameter line congruences in $\mathbb {R}^{4}$. We also classify the generic singularities of normal and Blaschke (affine) normal congruences.

In this paper, we study divergence properties of the Fourier series on Cantor-type fractal measure, also called the mock Fourier series. We give a sufficient condition under which the mock Fourier series for doubling spectral measure is divergent on a set of strictly positive measure. In particular, there exists an example of the quarter Cantor measure whose mock Fourier sums are not almost everywhere convergent.
