In this article we study the behaviour of a heterogeneous thin film whose microstructure oscillates on a scale that is comparable to that of the thickness of the domain. The argument is based on a three-dimensional–two-dimensional reduction through a Γ-convergence analysis, techniques of two-scale convergence and a decoupling procedure between the oscillating variable and the in-plane variable.

Let n ≥ 3, Ω ⊂ Rn be a domain with 0 ∈ Ω, then, for all the Hardy–Sobolev inequality says that and equality holds if and only if u = 0 and ((n − 2)/2)2 is the best constant which is never achieved. In view of this, there is scope for improving this inequality further. In this paper we have investigated this problem by using the fundamental solutions and have obtained the optimal estimates. Furthermore, we have shown that this technique is used to obtain the Hardy–Sobolev type inequalities on manifolds and also on the Heisenberg group.

We consider composite media made of homogeneous inclusions with C1,α,boundaries. Our goal is to compare the potential uε in a perfectly periodic composite with the potential uε,d, of a perturbed periodic medium, where the periodicity defects consist of misplaced inclusions. We give an asymptotic expansion of the difference uε,d − uε away from the defects and show that, to first order, a misplaced inclusion manifests itself via a polarization tensor, which is characterized.

We prove the existence of radial solutions of concentrating on a sphere for potentials which might be zero and might decay to zero at infinity. The proofs use a perturbation technique in a variational setting, through a Lyapunov–Schmidt reduction.

We describe Poincaré–Birkhoff–Witt bases for the two-parameter quantum groups U = Ur,s(sln) following Kharchenko and show that the positive part of U has the structure of an iterated skew polynomial ring. We define an ad-invariant bilinear form on U, which plays an important role in the construction of central elements. We introduce an analogue of the Harish-Chandra homomorphism and use it to determine the centre of U.

The aim of this paper is to determine in a natural manner the subspace of the space of Hilbert modular newforms of level n which correspond to eigenforms of an appropriate quaternion algebra, in the sense of having the same eigenvalues with respect to the corresponding Hecke operators. This study may be seen as a particular case of the Jacquet–Langlands correspondence.

We characterize the weighted Hardy inequalities for monotone functions in In dimension n = 1, this recovers the standard theory of Bp weights. For n > 1, the result was previously only known for the case p = 1. In fact, our main theorem is proved in the more general setting of partly ordered measure spaces.

The aim of the paper is to study the asymptotic behaviour of the solution of a quasilinear elliptic equation of the form with a high-contrast discontinuous coefficient aε(x), where ε is the parameter characterizing the scale of the microstucture. The coefficient aε(x) is assumed to degenerate everywhere in the domain Ω except in a thin connected microstructure of asymptotically small measure. It is shown that the asymptotical behaviour of the solution uε as ε → 0 is described by a homogenized quasilinear equation with the coefficients calculated by local energetic characteristics of the domain Ω.

In this paper we use phase-plane analysis to study one-dimensional p-Laplacian semi-positone problems under general sub-(p – 1)linear, asymptotically (p – 1)-linear, and super-(p – 1)linear conditions.

In this article we study the asymptotic behaviour of the eigenvalues of a family of nonlinear monotone elliptic operators of the form Aε = −div(aε (x, ∇u)), which are sub-differentials of even, positively homogeneous convex functionals, under the assumption that the operators G-converge to an operator Ahom = −div(ahom(x, ∇u)). We show that any limit point λ of a sequence of eigenvalues λε is an eigenvalue of the limit operator Ahom, where λε is an eigenvalue corresponding to the operator Aε. We also show the convergence of the sequence of first eigenvalues to the corresponding first eigenvalue of the homogenized operator.

The scalar equation with variable delay r(t) ≥ 0 is investigated, where t−r(t) is increasing and xg(x) > 0 (x ≠ 0) in a neighbourhood of x = 0. We find conditions for r, a and g so that for a given continuous initial function ψ a mapping P for (1) can be defined on a complete metric space Cψ and in which P has a unique fixed point. The end result is not only conditions for the existence and uniqueness of solutions of (1) but also for the stability of the zero solution. We also find conditions ensuring that the zero solution is asymptotically stable by changing to an exponentially weighted metric on a closed subset of Cψ. In this short note we prove that the functional I : W1,p(J;R) → R defined by is sequentially weakly lower semicontinuous in W1,p(J,R) if and only if the symmetric part W+ of W is separately convex. We assume that W is real valued, continuous and bounded below by a constant, and that J is an open subinterval of R. We also show that the lower semicontinuous envelope of I cannot in general be obtained by replacing W by its separately convex hull Wsc.

The regularity of the scaling profiles ψ to Smoluchowski’s coagulation equation is studied when the coagulation kernel K is given by K(x, y) = xλ + yλ with λ∈ (0, 1). More precisely, ψ is C1-smooth on (0,∞) and decays exponentially fast for large x. Furthermore, the singular behaviour of ψ(x) as x → 0 is identified, thus giving a rigorous proof of physical conjectures.

Let (M, g) and (N, h) be compact Riemannian manifolds of dimensions m and n, respectively. For p-homogeneous convex functions f(s, t) on [0,∞) × [0, ∞), we study the validity and non-validity of the first-order optimal Sobolev inequality on H1, p(M × N) where and Kf = Kf (m, n, p) is the best constant of the homogeneous Sobolev inequality on D1, p (Rm+n), The proof of the non-validity relies on the knowledge of extremal functions associated with the Sobolev inequality above. In order to obtain such extremals we use mass transportation and convex analysis results. Since variational arguments do not work for general functions f, we investigate the validity in a uniform sense on f and argue with suitable approximations of f which are also essential in the non-validity. Homogeneous Sobolev inequalities on product manifolds are connected to elliptic problems involving a general class of operators.

We show that every orthogonality-preserving linear map between normed spaces is a scalar multiple of an isometry. Using this result, we generalize Uhlhorn's version of Wigner's theorem on symmetry transformations to a wide class of Banach spaces.

We investigate maxima and minima of some functionals associated with solutions to Dirichlet problems for elliptic equations. We prove existence results and, under suitable restrictions on the data, we show that any maximal configuration satisfies a special system of two equations. Next, we use the moving-plane method to find symmetry results for solutions of a system. We apply these results in our discussion of symmetry for the maximal configurations of the previous problem.

A nonlinear integro-differential equation that models a coagulation and multiple fragmentation process in which continuous and discrete fragmentation mass loss can occur is examined using the theory of strongly continuous semigroups of operators. Under the assumptions that the coagulation kernel is constant, the fragmentation-rate function is linearly bounded, and the continuous mass-loss-rate function is locally Lipschitz, global existence and uniqueness of solutions that lose mass in accordance with the model are established. In the case when no coagulation is present and the fragmentation process is binary with constant fragmentation kernel and constant continuous mass loss, an explicit formula is given for the associated substochastic semigroup.

The properties of convex representatives of polyconvex functions W : R2×2 → R are studied. The structure of the largest convex representative ϕW : R5 → R is given, and this is used to derive a representation formula for ϕW when W is C1 and satisfies a mild growth condition. The regularity of ϕW is discussed when W is C1; in particular, when W is C1, grows super-quadratically and is strictly polyconvex, it is shown that W has a C1 convex representative.

In this work we are considering both the one-dimensional and the radially symmetric versions of the elliptic system Δu = vp, Δv = uq in Ω, where p, q > 0, under the boundary condition u|∂Ω = +∞, v|∂Ω = +∞. It is shown that no positive solutions exist when pq ≤ 1, while we provide a detailed account of the set of (infinitely many) positive solutions if pq > 1. The behaviour near the boundary of all solutions is also elucidated, and symmetric solutions (u, v) are completely characterized in terms of their minima (u(0), v(0)). Non-symmetric solutions are also deeply studied in the one-dimensional problem.

Let R be a Cohen–Macaulay local ring, and let I ⊂ R be an ideal with minimal reduction J. In this paper we attach to the pair (I, J) a non-standard bigraded module ΣI, J. The study of the bigraded Hilbert function of ΣI, J allows us to prove an improved version of Wang's conjecture and a weak version of Sally's conjecture, both on the depth of the associated graded ring grI(R). The module ΣI, J can be considered as a refinement of the Sally module introduced previously by Vasconcelos.
