Paired radiocarbon and stable carbon analyses have been carried out on aragonite shells and organic soft bodies of snails from the Chinese Loess Plateau in order to explore the possibility of using these kinds of samples as environmental and chronological indicators. Results show that the soft bodies exhibit 14C concentrations similar to those of plant leaves, indicating that carbon in the soft bodies is fixed from organic diets. The aragonite shells are depleted in 14C compared to the soft bodies due to ingestion of 14C-depleted carbonate. This depletion shows a consistent pattern across the Chinese Loess Plateau, implying a good potential for the snail shells to be applicable for 14C dating with a simple correction. The δ13C values measured for aragonite shells display a linear relationship with those obtained for the soft bodies with a constant offset. In addition, the carbon derived from organic diets accounts for more than 70% of the total shell carbon. This fact suggests that stable carbon isotope composition of aragonite shells mainly reflects that of organic diet, and could be used as a reliable indicator of paleodiet in the Chinese Loess Plateau.

The Earth is within the Contemporaneous Solar Maximum (CSM), analogous to the Medieval Solar Maximum (MSM). If this analogy is valid, solar activity will continue to increase well into the 21st century. We have completed 75 single-ring and 10 double-ring measurements from ad 1065 to ad 1150 to obtain information about solar activity during this postulated analog to solar activity during the MSM. δ14C decreases steadily during the period ad 1065 to ad 1150 but with cyclical oscillations around the decreasing trend. These oscillations can be successfully modeled by four cycles. These four frequencies are 1/52 yr-1, 1/22 yr-1, 1/11 yr-1, and 1/5.5 yr, i.e., the 4th harmonic of the Suess cycle, the Hale and Schwabe cycles and the 2nd harmonic of the Schwabe cycle.

Many studies use radiocarbon dates on estuarine shell material to build age-depth models of sediment accumulation in estuaries in California, USA. Marine 14C ages are typically older than dates from contemporaneous terrestrial carbon and local offsets (ΔR) from the global average marine offset need to be calculated to ensure the accuracy of calibrated dates. We used accelerator mass spectrometry (AMS) 14C dating on 40 pre-1950 salt marsh snail and clam shells previously collected from four California estuaries. The average ΔR and standard deviation of 217 ± 129 14C yr is consistent with previous calculations using mixed estuarine and marine samples, although the standard deviation and resulting age uncertainty was higher for our estuarine calculations than previous studies. There was a slight but significant difference (p = 0.024) in ΔR between epifaunal snails (ΔR = 171 ± 154 14C yr) and infaunal clams (ΔR = 263 ± 77 14C yr), as well as between samples from individual estuaries. However, a closer examination of the data shows that even for the same species, at the same estuary, ΔR can vary as much as ∼500 14C yr. In some cases, the bulk of this variation occurs between samples collected by different collectors at different times, potentially indicating time dependence in carbon sources and ΔR variation. These variations could also be attributed to differences in collection location within a single estuary and resulting spatial differences in carbon sources. Intertidal specimens located in the high marsh may have lower ΔR than fully marine counterparts because of increased terrestrial 14C input. The large variations in ΔR here highlight the need for conservative chronological interpretations, as well as the assumption of wide uncertainties, when dating samples from estuarine sources.

Although soil contains about three times the amount of carbon present in the preindustrial atmosphere, determining how perturbations (e.g., changing land use, CO2 fertilization, changing climate and anthropogenic nitrogen deposition) alter soil carbon storage and influence atmospheric CO2 levels has proved elusive. Not knowing the soil carbon turnover times causes part of this uncertainty. I outline a strategy for using radiocarbon measurements to estimate soil organic matter turnover times and inventories in native soil. The resulting estimates of carbon exchange produce reasonable agreement with measurements of CO2 fluxes from soil. Furthermore, derivatives of the model are used to explore soil carbon dynamics of cultivated and recovering soil. Because the models can reproduce observed soil 14C measurements in native, cultivated, and recovering ecosystems (i.e., the underlying assumptions appear reasonable), the native model was modified to estimate the potential rate of additional carbon storage because of CO2 fertilization. This process may account for 45–65% of the “missing CO2 sink.”

Results of measurements in an underground laboratory, 70m of water equivalent below surface, are given. Background values of proportional gas counters with volumes between 16cc and 1.5L are lower by a factor of 2—4.5 compared to the values in the previously used laboratory (7m w.e.). High counting gas pressures, up to 5 at CH4 and up to 36 at P-10, enable the use of relatively small counters with correspondingly small background contributions from the walls. A separation of the residual background into different components is attempted, distinguishing a pressure dependent volume effect and surface correlated contributions. It can be shown that the selection of radioactively pure counter construction material is very important for a good low level counting system.

Radiocarbon measurements in seawater samples taken at six stations in the southwestern North Pacific visited during the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) 1997 Pacific Ocean Expedition were carried out at the accelerator mass spectrometry (AMS) facility of the Japan Atomic Energy Research Institute (JAERI). Three stations were located close to GEOSECS stations, and three were in the vicinity of Bikini and Enewetak Atolls, which may be influenced by former nuclear weapons testing. Compared with the GEOSECS data (1973), our results show an increase of 14C in intermediate waters. Furthermore, it is estimated that bomb-produced 14C inventories in the water column have increased by more than 20% during the last 24 years. However, vertical profiles of Δ14C at the stations near Bikini and Enewetak Atolls show a similar general trend to those found in other stations.

In this paper we analyze the radiocarbon (14C) concentration changes over the whole operational period of the Ignalina Nuclear Power Plant (INPP) including the post-shutdown decommissioning. Environmental samples from the vicinity of the INPP and a rural area as background of pine tree rings were analyzed with the single stage accelerator mass spectrometer (SSAMS). The analysis shows the local influence of the INPP from 3 to 7 pMC. The whole time span from 1983 to 2015 is divided into three periods representing the early and late operational and post-shutdown stages of the INPP with different 14C profiles in analyzed samples. The influence of the maintenance of the INPP and radioactive waste management activities are indicated and discussed.

A representative selection of Roman and Coptic textiles is used to compare the radiocarbon dating results with the chronology proposed by art historians. In some cases, the comparison was made on individual objects, but in other cases, groups of stylistically and/or technologically related textiles were compared. In the case of the latter, the interquartile range was calculated. The results of this comparison show that some individual samples and groups are dated older than expected, while for another group the opposite is the case. One group was matching well with the presumed period as a whole, but not on the basis of the individual pieces. The analyses showed the necessity of 14C dating to obtain a more accurate dating of Coptic textiles.

Organic carbon (OC) radiocarbon (14C) signatures in marine surface sediments are highly variable and the causes of this heterogeneity remain ambiguous. Here, we present results from a detailed 14C-based investigation of an Arabian Sea sediment, including measurements on organic matter (OM) in bulk sediment, specific grain size fractions, and OC decomposition products from ramped-pyrolysis-oxidation (RPO). Our results show that 14C ages of OM increase with increasing grain size, suggesting that grain size is an important factor controlling the 14C heterogeneity in marine sediments. Analysis of RPO decomposition products from different grain size fractions reveals an overall increase in age of corresponding thermal fractions from finer to coarser fractions. We suggest that hydrodynamic properties of sediment grains exert the important control on the 14C age distribution of OM among grain size fractions. We propose a conceptual model to account for this dimensionality in 14C variability that invokes two predominant modes of OM preservation within different grain size fractions of Arabian Sea sediment: finer (<63 µm) fractions are influenced by OM-mineral grain aggregation processes, giving rise to relatively uniform 14C ages, whereas OM preserved in coarser (>63 µm) fractions includes materials encapsulated within microfossils and/or entrained fossil (14C-depleted) OC hosted in detrital mineral grains. Our findings highlight the value of RPO for assessment of 14C age variability in sedimentary OC, and for assessing mechanisms of OM preservation in aquatic sediments.

The Radiocarbon Dating Laboratory of the University of Texas was reorganized in late 1962. The dates reported in this list were obtained from February to November, 1963. The laboratory uses liquid scintillation counting with benzene solutions (Tamers, Stipp, and Collier, 1961; Noakes et al., 1963). The chemical synthesis has been modified and improved in several ways in order to permit one worker to produce a sample per day.

This date list presents results of samples measured at ISOTOPES during 1968 and 1969 and several measurements made previously for which complete sample data has recently been received.

This report summarizes the radiocarbon dates obtained at the University of Wisconsin since November 1964; the procedures followed have been described previously (Wisconsin I, 1965).

The counting equipment has been supplemented with a second detector of 500 ml volume for which the nominal background at 1 std atm, 298.2° K, is 2.1 cpm as determined with petroleum methane (Phillips Petroleum Co.). The corresponding standard count for contemporary methane derived from NBS oxalic acid 95% Aox, is nominally 2.8 cpm at 1 std atm, 298.2° K. The additional counting equipment was also obtained from the Sharp Division of Beckman Instrument Co.

The dates reported in this list are for geologic and archaeologic samples only. During the interval since our last date list (R, 1966, v 8, p 498-506) most of our measurements have been on samples of sea water. These will be reported separately at a later time. The methods used are essentially those reported previously (R, 1963, v 5, p 80-81) but with the following notable changes and additions: We now prepare our methane counting gas as described in Buddemeier et al (1970). Our IL membrane counter has since been augmented by 3 additional counters. Two of these are IL quartz proportional counters inside geiger anticoincidence shields. Operating pressures are ca 1.5 to 4atm. Backgrounds of these 2 counters are in the neighborhood of 1.8 and 3cpm and the net counting rate of NBS oxalic acid ranges from 7 to 18.7cpm, depending on the pressure. The third counter (“minicounter”) is rather special: .IL quartz proportional counter inside a methane proportional anticoincidence counter. Sample and anticoincidence counting gases are introduced simultaneously with a differential pressure that never exceeds a few cm Hg. The sample filling side is constructed so as to minimize dead volume; over 80% of the sample gas is inside the active volume of the 14C counter. The range of filling pressures which are possible is ca 1 to 4atm.

Measurements of 14C activity as well as determinations of the stable isotope composition (18O, 2H and 13C) of groundwater samples were made to investigate the flow path, origin, recharge and age of the Botucatu Aquifer System in Brazil, between 1984 and 1987. The stable oxygen isotope composition reflects infiltration during several climatic recharge conditions. Measured 14C activities range from 0.4 to 94.2% modern. δ13C values enable us to distinguish two groundwater types of different origins. There is a gradual increase of 14C ages from the outcrop area towards the central part of the basin, associated with a progression of the confining conditions. Anomalous fluoride contents seem to be correlated with high 14C ages of the groundwater. The reliability of the 14C data is discussed.

The British Nuclear Fuels plc reprocessing plant at Sellafield in Cumbria, Northwest England, discharges between 1 and 3 TBq of 14C per annum as low-level waste via a pipeline into the Eastern Irish Sea. Our results demonstrate 14C activities in excess of the current ambient level (i.e., ca. 260 Bq kg−1 carbon) in a range of both biotic and abiotic samples with evidence that a significant percentage of the discharges are in the form of dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC). There also appears to be a significant seasonal influence on the uptake of the DIC by the phytoplankton, most likely linked to their bloom periods. Results from different aspects of the research are integrated to provide an opportunity to consider the overall distribution and behavior of 14C in the Eastern Irish Sea. We also discuss the results in terms of existing sediment chronologies and sedimentation rates and consider the possible consequences of phytoplankton blooms on the cycling of the other radionuclides.

The Chronos 14Carbon-Cycle Facility is a new radiocarbon laboratory at the University of New South Wales, Australia. Built around an Ionplus 200 kV MIni-CArbon DAting System (MICADAS) Accelerator Mass Spectrometer (AMS) installed in October 2019, the facility was established to address major challenges in the Earth, Environmental and Archaeological sciences. Here we report an overview of the Chronos facility, the pretreatment methods currently employed (bones, carbonates, peat, pollen, charcoal, and wood) and results of radiocarbon and stable isotope measurements undertaken on a wide range of sample types. Measurements on international standards, known-age and blank samples demonstrate the facility is capable of measuring 14C samples from the Anthropocene back to nearly 50,000 years ago. Future work will focus on improving our understanding of the Earth system and managing resources in a future warmer world.

Through the establishment of radiocarbon chronozones relating common geological events within lacustrine and eolian sediments from five profiles representative of loess yuan (tablelands), river valley and northwest margin features of the Loess Plateau, we propose a series of stratigraphic divisions within the last 30 ka. The focus of this detailed study involves stratigraphic relationships contributing to evidence of Younger Dryas events, with the recognition of cold-dry, cool-wet and cold-dry periods represented within the Heiheze silt, Midiwan peat and Liushuwan eolian sand. The stratigraphic profiles reflect century-scale fluctuations of the East Asian monsoons. The precursor events enable us to place the Pleistocene/Holocene boundary at 10,000 bp.

Plans for a radiocarbon dating laboratory at the University of Lund were initiated by Tage Nilsson and Holger Arbman in 1962. Work was begun in 1964 and at the end of 1965 most of the dating equipment was installed. Dating began in 1966 after careful testing of counting electronics and counters.

The dating system has two 1-L copper-walled proportional counters of Östlund-Engstrand construction (for details see Stockholm V. p. 204, Fig. 1) surrounded by 2.5 cm of selected lead, followed by a ring of 23 cosmic-ray Geiger counters (model HZ-100, Zentralwerkstatt Göttingen). On all sides are at least 20 cm of iron. Above and on both long sides of the counters are 10 cm of paraffin wax with about 12% boric acid between the iron layers.

Lacustrine sediments are important archives for paleoclimate research, but there are evident carbon reservoir effects. Radiocarbon (14C) ages of lake sediments must be corrected for these effects before applying them to paleoclimate research. The authors review the lacustrine research from the last 20 years from different climatic regions in China, and systematically investigate the 14C age and correction methods used in the studies of 81 lakes. It is found that the climate-vegetation cover and distribution of carbonate around lakes are dominant factor controlling radiocarbon reservoir effects. In eastern China, the average 14C reservoir age is about 500 14C years and is associated with relatively dense vegetation. However, in northwest China and Qinghai-Tibet Plateau, widespread carbonate bedrock may markedly increase the radiocarbon reservoir age which frequently is about 1500 and 2500 14C years. A piecewise linear regression model provides more reliable 14C reservoir age correction that accounts for sedimentary facies and sedimentation rate changes. It is worth mentioning that when analyzing 14C ages deviated greatly from time sequence, the age anomalies may indicate important effects relevant to the study of climate and environmental changes.
