Arsenic-containing compounds have been widely used in the field of weed control. Sodium arsenite has been employed for general contact weed control, and as a herbicide on turf areas. In the latter capacity it is used to control undesirable species without inflicting severe or permanent injury to desirable turf grasses. Disodium methylarsonate (DMA) and dimethylarsinic acid (cacodylic acid) have more recently been shown to possess herbicidal properties. DMA has been used for the selective control of crabgrass in turf, and for removal of certain weedy species from Bermudagrass.

Field experiments were conducted to study the effectiveness of 2,2-dichloropropionic acid (dalapon) for the control of 55 morphologically distinct ecotypes of johnsongrass (Sorghum halepense (L.) Pers.) collected throughout the United States and from several foreign countries. Ecotypes varied widely in their response to dalapon whether collected from Mississippi, from 10 other states, or from eight foreign countries. Initial control of seven ecotypes with dalapon increased 8 to 35% when nitrogen fertilization was increased from 0 to 300 lb/A. Regrowth of surviving plants was more vigorous with increased nitrogen levels so increased fertility reduced final control. Comparative differences in the susceptibility of the seven selected ecotypes to monosodium methanearsonate (MSMA) were not as great as those obtained with dalapon. Varying the rate of nitrogen fertilization had less effect on johnsongrass susceptibility to MSMA than to dalapon. Dalapon controlled sorghum almum (Sorghum almum Parodi) better than johnsongrass.

Research was conducted to determine the utility of a single, temperature-independent Weibull function for describing cumulative seed germination under several temperature regimes with 14 sets of weed and crop seed germination data. A modified cumulative Weibull function was derived to distribute germination times for individuals within the population and distributed the occurrence of germination given ample sample size and appropriate sample interval. The descriptive and predictive attributes of the stochastic model component are well suited for incorporation into seed germination models and are likely applicable to models to predict distribution of times for other developmental processes of plants.

In growth chamber studies, high relative humidity and rewetting crystalline spray deposits of 2-chloro-4-ethylamino-6-isopropylamino-s-triazine (atrazine) increased absorption by and phytotoxicity to giant foxtail (Setaria faberii Herrm.), but phytotoxicity was restricted to expanded (unrolled) leaves unless some atrazine was absorbed by the roots. Though phytotoxicity was increased by simulated rainfall when root absorption was prevented, an appreciable number of the plants were killed only when atrazine residues were washed into the soil. In field studies, atrazine applied to a wet soil surface was as effective as the same rate of atrazine foliarly applied. In other field experiments, atrazine applied to giant foxtail on a wet soil and followed by simulated rainfall reduced stand and dry weight, but on a dry soil and not followed by simulated rainfall, atrazine reduced dry weight less and did not reduce stand. These results are due to root absorption of atrazine from wet soil. Spray additives increased phytotoxicity.

Plant response studies were conducted from 1980 to 1982 under pasture and field plot conditions to determine the sublethal effects of the thistle rosette weevil [Trichosirocalus (Ceuthorynchidius) horridus (Panzer)] on Carduus thistles. Response to weevil damage was dependent upon thistle size and growing conditions. Damage by T. horridus destroyed apical dominance, which altered the thistle growth pattern. Infested plants consistently produced more stems and a larger crown than uninfested thistles. Large thistles were stimulated by weevil damage, producing heavier stems and more heads. Small infested thistles developed more quickly than small uninfested thistles. Small and medium infested thistles were shorter and produced fewer seeds and heads than uninfested thistles. The extent of thistle reduction by this weevil will ultimately be determined by the conditions under which thistles grow.

Varying concentrations of benzyladenine (BA), indoleacetic acid (IAA), gibberellic acid (GA), abscisic acid (ABA), and 2-chloroethylphosphonic acid (ethephon) were used to induce sprouting of dormant purple nutsedge (Cyperus rotundus L.) tubers. BA at 50 to 300 ppm stimulated sprouting. The continuous presence of BA during the sprouting period was necessary to give significant sprout stimulation. Neither IAA at 1, 10, or 100 ppm; GA at 10, 100, or 1000 ppm; nor ethephon at 10, 100, or 1000 ppm had stimulatory effects on sprouting. ABA counteracted the stimulatory effects of BA when tubers were treated with ABA following BA treatment. Sprouting was markedly greater at 33 C day, 25 C night than at 24 C day, 17 C night. Growth of plants originating from tubers pretreated with 100 ppm BA did not differ significantly from the controls. Sustained BA applications at 100 and 200 ppm produced numerous plants with tuft-type growth habit, delayed flowering, and reduced the number of inflorescences. Numerous short, diageotropic rhizomes were produced.

A comparative study of the growth and development of several populations of dinitroaniline-susceptible (DS) and -resistant (DR) goosegrass [Eleusine indica (L.) Gaertn. # ELEIN] biotypes was conducted under noncompetitive field conditions. Plant height and width, number of tillers, aboveground dry weight, relative growth rate (RGR), number of inflorescences/plant, total inflorescence dry weight, individual inflorescence dry weight, number of spicate branches/inflorescence, and flag leaf length and width were recorded periodically during the growing season. There were no significant differences between biotypes in most characteristics with the exception of total inflorescence dry weight. The DS biotype produced more total inflorescence dry weight than the DR biotype at 8 and 13 weeks after transplanting. Significant variation among DS and DR populations occurred in 37 and 33 of 56 evaluations, respectively. When variation existed within a biotype, populations exhibited broad ranges of response for the various growth parameters. With the exception of total inflorescence dry weight, DS and DR biotypes generally exhibited similar ranges of variability.

Leaves of greenhouse-grown honey mesquite [Prosopis juliflora (Swartz) DC var. glandulosa (Torr.) Cockerell # PRCJG] initially absorbed more triclopyr {[(3,5,6-trichloro-2-pyridinyl)oxy] acetic acid} from application of the ester than the amine salt. After 24 h, however, honey mesquite had absorbed 66% of the applied ester formulation and 72% of the amine formulation. Triclopyr was rapidly transported from the treated leaf to other plant parts. Triclopyr concentrations recovered 4 h after treatment in the upper canopy, lower canopy, and roots averaged 0.12, 0.19, and 0.09 μg, respectively. Concentrations of triclopyr recovered after 24 h were not significantly different than after 4 h in the canopy. No ester from ester application was recovered in the canopy, other than that in the treated leaf. Triclopyr recovered from stems of honey mesquite in the field ranged from 0.16 to 0.72 μg/g in phloem and from 0.04 to 0.20 μg/g in xylem from a broadcast spray application of the butoxyethanol ester at 1.12 kg/ha. Concentrations of triclopyr were usually not significantly different in either the upper or lower stems whether sampled 3 or 30 days after treatment.

Bermudagrass [Cynodon dactylon (L.) Pers. ♯ CYNDA ‘Vamont’, ‘Midiron’, and Cynodon dactylon X Cynodon transvaalensis Burlt-Davy ♯ CYNTR ‘Tifway’] cultivars were tolerant to oxadiazon [2-tert-butyl-4(2,4-dichloro-5-isopropoxyphenyl)-Δ2-1, 3,4-oxadiazolin-5-one] applied at rates up to 4.5 kg ai/ha during sprig establishment. The rate of shoot growth from sprigs after oxadiazon treatment was excellent and provided adequate ground cover within 3 months. Oxadiazon applications adversely affected root development of the Midiron cultivar as measured by the force required to uproot the sod. Root development of Vamont and Tifway after oxadiazon application was equal to that of untreated bermudagrass. Oxadiazon plus bensulide [O,O-diisopropyl phosphorodithioate S-ester with N-(2-mercaptoethyl)benzenesulfonamide] was inhibitory to both root and shoot growth of all cultivars. Metribuzin [4-amino-6-tert-butyl-3-(methylthio)-as-triazin-5(4H)-one] applications at 3 and 5 weeks after sprigging caused severe root injury to Vamont and Midiron bermudagrass.

The herbicide resistance to dicamba (HRd) biotype of kochia is resistant to several auxinic herbicides and is impaired in shoot gravitropism and other auxin-mediated responses. To better characterize the biotype and investigate its mechanism of resistance, we used messenger RNA (mRNA) differential display to compare patterns of dicamba-induced gene expression in HRd and susceptible (S1) plants. More than 60,000 complementary DNA fragments were generated and examined, 106 of which were isolated and used as probes on Northern blots to confirm gene expression levels. Steady-state levels of > 90% of mRNAs did not change after dicamba application. However, several mRNAs were detected whose levels were decreased, increased, or differentially regulated between the biotypes within minutes of dicamba treatment. The abundance of three mRNAs decreased after treatment, two of which had significant sequence similarity to choline monooxygenase and 5,10-methylenetetrahydrofolate reductase, respectively. Conversely, increased expression levels were observed for a putative chloride channel protein, 1-aminocyclopropane-1-carboxylate synthase, and an unknown gene. Genes differentially expressed between HRd and S1 plants included those similar to a putative translation initiation factor, xyloglucan endotransglycosylase, and a hypothetical protein cloned from several organisms. The results demonstrate that mRNA differential display is a useful technique for discovering genes that are rapidly regulated as part of a physiological response, and that this approach may provide insight into the mechanism of auxinic herbicide resistance in kochia.

Except for a small number of cases in which biocontrol agents were introduced from the site of origin of a weed (classical biocontrol), there have been few cases where a pathogen was virulent enough to perform cost effectively in the field as a mycoherbicide. Mycoherbicides are typically weed species specific, so compatibility with herbicides used to control other weeds is often studied. There can be a synergy between mycoherbicides and herbicides at the field level due to overlapping weed spectra (such synergies are not discussed in depth herein). Two approaches have been used to ascertain whether there is synergy in controlling the target weed: (1) random screening with herbicides; (2) using herbicides as antimetabolites to inhibit specific pathways, enhancing virulence. Glyphosate is the most common herbicide to synergize mycoherbicides, possibly due to its dual function as an inhibitor of biosynthesis of phenylpropanoid phytoalexins by suppressing enolphosphate-shikimate phosphate synthase, or by suppressing callose production (by inhibiting callose synthase) as well as inhibiting other calcium-dependent pathways due to the calcium-chelating properties of glyphosate.

Several weedy red rice populations have evolved resistance to imidazolinone herbicides worldwide. The understanding of the factors related to the herbicide resistance in weedy red rice is important to prevent its occurrence in new areas where imidazolinone-resistant rice cultivars are being used, and to manage the new rice cultivars resistant to herbicides with modes of action other than the acetolactate synthase (ALS)-inhibitors that are being developed. The objectives of this study were to analyze the relationship of weedy red rice populations from southern Brazil with rice cultivars and wild Oryza species and to evaluate the occurrence of introgression from rice cultivars and seed migration as the origin of resistance to imidazolinone herbicides in weedy rice. The study was based on 27 weedy red rice populations, seven rice cultivars, and four wild Oryza species that were genotyped with 24 simple sequence repeats and three ALS-specific single-nucleotide polymorphism markers. A large proportion of the genetic variation of the weedy red rice populations was found within (74%) rather than among populations (26%). The weedy red rice populations were more closely related to the newer rice cultivars that are imidazolinone-resistant than to the older cultivars. The South American native Oryza glumaepatula and the other wild Oryza species—Oryza rufipogon, Oryza longistaminata, and Oryza glaberrima—clustered separately from weedy red rice populations, indicating a low likelihood of introgression among weedy red rice and these wild species. Seed migration was an important factor in the genetic structure of the evaluated weedy red rice populations, although gene flow by pollen from resistant cultivars was the principal reason for the spread of herbicide resistance.

Greenhouse and laboratory experiments were conducted to study the activity of foliar-applied chlorimuron in yellow and purple nutsedge. Foliar-applied chlorimuron caused injury to both yellow and purple nutsedge at rates as low as 5 g ai/ha. Visible injury increased as rates increased from 5 to 20 g/ha at all weekly evaluation dates. At 28 days after application, there was 84% control of yellow and 100% control of purple nutsedge from 20 g/ha of chlorimuron. In both species, all rates of chlorimuron reduced shoot dry weight, inhibited secondary shoot production, and inhibited resprouting of parent tubers attached to treated plants. Over 92% of the applied label was recovered, when 15 μl of 3.46 mM 14C-chlorimuron solution containing 0.18 μCi was applied to a 1 cm2 area in the middle of the fourth fully expanded leaf. Over 12% of the total 14C applied was absorbed, with over 15% of that being translocated within 1 day after application in both species. More than 76% of the absorbed 14C in yellow nutsedge and 72% in purple nutsedge remained in the treated area. In both species, basipetal transport was limited. Analysis of plant tissue extracts by thin-layer chromatography indicated slow degradation of chlorimuron in both species. Susceptibility of yellow and purple nutsedge to chlorimuron appears to be due to the rapid absorption and translocation rates in relationship to the slow degradation rate of the active parent compound.

Field research was conducted from 1990 through 1992 to evaluate the effect of the fungal pathogen, Colletotrichum coccodes, on velvetleaf intra- and interspecific (with soybean) competition across a range of monoculture and 1:1 mixture densities. In pure stand, application of this velvetleaf foliar pathogen had little impact on seed yield of the weed. In these plots, velvetleaf intraspecific competition stimulated vertical growth and favored the rapid replacement of diseased leaf tissue that had prematurely senesced. In mixtures, however, C. coccodes inoculation differentially influenced the yield of both species. In two of three years, C. coccodes inoculation reduced velvetleaf seed yields by, an average, 60% compared with yields for control (uninoculated) plants. Velvetleaf suffered greater yield losses from soybean interspecific competition in the presence of C. coccodes, especially at the lower planting densities. The decline in velvetleaf yield was primarily attributed to the stunting effect of the pathogen, which allowed soybean plants to grow above the weed. Consequently, soybean yield losses within inoculated mixture plots were generally lower than for control plots, although significant increases (23%) in soybean yield were recorded only in 1992. The inoculation treatment had relatively little impact on the number of seeds produced per fruit or seed unit weight in both species regardless of whether plants were grown in monocultures or in mixtures. The finding that C. coccodes has only a limited effect on velvetleaf performance in pure stand, while having a significantly greater effect in a competitive environment with a soybean crop, has important ramifications as to the value and accuracy of initial efficacy testing that rates potential biocontrol agents based solely on their effect within pure stands of the target weed.

The herbicide clomazone caused ultrastructural damage to etioplasts of cotton cotyledons. Etioplast envelopes were irregular, prothylakoids were absent or irregular, stroma density was low, and there were abnormal stromal vesicles. Further damage occurred upon exposure to light. Clomazone greatly slowed the conversion of chlorophyllide to chlorophyll in cotton, suggesting that phytol synthesis was affected. Neither synthesis of protochlorophyllide nor phototransformation of protochlorophyllide to chlorophyllide was affected by clomazone. Clomazone completely inhibited carotenoid synthesis without an accumulation of phytoene. However, the sesquiterpenoids hemigossypol and the dimeric sesquiterpenoid gossypol accumulated in greater amounts in clomazone-treated than in control tissues. These results indicate that this herbicide inhibits synthesis of terpenoids after the formation of farnesyl pyrophosphate.

Greenhouse-grown honey mesquite [Prosopis juliflora (Swartz) DC. var. glandulosa (Torr.) Cockerell] plants were treated with the propylene glycol butyl ether esters of 2,4,5-T [(2,4,5-trichlorophenoxy)acetic acid], the triethylamine salt or the ethylene glycol butyl ether esters of triclopyr {[(3,5,6-trichloro-2-pyridinyl) oxy]acetic acicd}, the potassium salt of picloram (4-amino-3,5,6-trichloropicolinic acid), or the monoethanol amine salt of 3,6-dichloropicolinic acid applied at the rate of 1.1 kg/ha to soil, foliage, or soil plus foliage. All herbicides were effective as foliar sprays in killing the stems of honey mesquite. When applied to the soil, picloram and 3,6-dichloropicolinic acid killed all above ground stems, and the ester and amine formulation of triclopyr killed 70 and 91% of the stem tissue, respectively, but 2,4,5-T was ineffective. Accumulation of herbicides in leaves 10 days after foliar spray was 28, 167, and 266 μg/g fresh wt for triclopyr, 3,6-dichloropicolinic acid, and picloram, respectively. Upward transport of picloram and 3,6-dichloropicolinic acid (2.7 to 5.9 μg/g) was also more extensive than that of 2,4,5-T or triclopyr after soil treatment. Higher concentrations of 3,6-dichloropicolinic acid than 2,4,5-T, triclopyr, or picloram usually was found in honey mesquite stems and roots 3, 10, or 30 days after application to soil or foliage. This may be one reason that 3,6-dichloropicolinic acid is highly effective in controlling honey mesquite.

Seed samples of triazine-resistant and susceptible pigweed were received from the four areas of the United States and Canada where resistant pigweed populations have appeared. The reported resistance or susceptibility of all biotypes was verified, and several plants from each seed source were grown to maturity for species identification. Pigweed samples from Maryland and Pennsylvania were smooth pigweed (Amaranthus hybridus L.). One resistant and one susceptible biotype from Washington were also smooth pigweed. All other samples from Washington and the sample from Ontario were Powell amaranth (A. powellii S. Wats.). None of the triazine-resistant seed samples were redroot pigweed (A. retroflexus L.), despite earlier reports of resistance in this species. Taxonomic characteristics important in the identification of smooth pigweed, Powell amaranth, and redroot pigweed are discussed.

Spraying with tank mix combinations of the fungus Colletotrichum coccodes and the plant growth regulator thidiazuron increased mortality, decreased biomass and height of velvetleaf, and increased soybean yield in field experiments. The velvetleaf isolate of C. coccodes was compatible with thidiazuron, and tank mix combinations consistently improved control over either component alone. In the moist 1986 season the fungus and the growth regulator interacted synergistically to increase velvetleaf mortality. In the drier 1987 season no significant interaction was detected between the two components.

Infestations of Italian ryegrass are problematic in both conventional and organic wheat production systems. The development of wheat cultivars with superior competitive ability against Italian ryegrass could play a role in maintaining acceptable yields and suppressing weed populations. Research was conducted in North Carolina to identify indirect methods of selection for Italian ryegrass suppressive ability (hereafter referred to as weed suppressive ability) of winter wheat cultivars that correlate well with Italian ryegrass-to-wheat biomass ratios. Two winter wheat cultivars (Dyna-Gro Baldwin and Dyna-Gro Dominion) and one experimental wheat line (NC05-19684) with differing morphological traits were overseeded with varying densities of Italian ryegrass. Wheat height measured throughout the growing season in weed-free plots was strongly associated with weed suppressive ability, but high wheat tillering capacity had no significant effect on weed suppressive ability in the lines tested in this study. Italian ryegrass seed head density during grain fill was strongly correlated (r = 0.94) with Italian ryegrass-to-wheat biomass ratio, the generally accepted measure of weed suppressive ability. Visual estimates of percent Italian ryegrass biomass relative to the plot with the highest level of Italian ryegrass infestation in each replicate were also strongly correlated with weed suppressive ability at all growth stages, especially during heading (r = 0.87) (Zadoks growth stage [GS] 55). Measurements from nonimaging spectrophotometers and overhead photographs taken from tillering (Zadoks 23 to 25) to early dough development (Zadoks 80) were unreliable estimates of end-of-season Italian ryegrass-to-wheat biomass ratios because they failed to account for wheat cultivar differences in biomass, color, and growth habit. Italian ryegrass seed head density and visual estimates of Italian ryegrass biomass during grain fill are appropriate indirect methods of selection for weed suppressive ability in breeding programs.

At the time of grain harvest, weed seeds can be classed into one of four pools on the basis of dispersal status and location: (1) undispersed, remaining on the mother plant; (2) dispersed in the current year, on the soil surface; (3) dispersed in the current year and collected by harvest machinery; and (4) dispersed in a previous year and persisting within the soil seed bank. Knowledge of the relative sizes of these seed pools for different weed species under different crop environments will be useful for determining the best way to reduce the size of inputs to the soil seed bank. In fall 2004 and fall 2005, four randomly selected commercially managed corn and soybean fields in east-central Illinois were sampled to quantify weed seed pools at time of crop harvest. Thirty randomly located 0.125-m2 quadrats were placed within each field, the four seed pools mentioned above were sampled for each quadrat, and the species composition and abundance of each seed pool was determined. The magnitude of the weed seed rain varied among species and between years and crops. Twenty-six weed species were found to contribute to at least one of the four seed pools. However, the weed seed pools were consistently dominated by six species: velvetleaf, Amaranthus complex (redroot pigweed and waterhemp), ivyleaf morningglory, giant foxtail, prickly sida, and common cocklebur. For each of these species, the ratio of undispersed seeds to seeds in the soil seed bank at harvest time was ≥ 1 in at least one crop during one of the two experimental years, indicating a potential for the soil seed bank to be completely replenished or augmented by that year's seed rain. This analysis demonstrates the urgent need for techniques to limit weed seed inputs to the soil seed bank at the end of the growing season.
