Diclofop [2-[4-(2,4-dichlorophenoxy)phenoxy] propanoic acid] was evaluated to determine Italian ryegrass (Lolium multiflorum Lam.) control and effect on yield of winter wheat (Triticum aestivum L.). Diclofop applied at 0.5, 0.75, 1.0, and 1.5 kg/ha postemergence provided excellent control of ryegrass and resulted in significant yield increases of winter wheat. Diclofop was most effective when applied at the two- to three-leaf stage of Italian ryegrass growth. Postemergence applications of diclofop plus bentazon [3-isopropyi-1H-2,1,3-benzothiadiazin-4(3H)-one 2,2-dioxide] gave excellent control of ryegrass and significant increases in wheat yields.

Potato response to simulated drift of imazamethabenz, imazethapyr, or imazapyr was evaluated in field studies conducted near Aberdeen, ID, in 1989 and 1990. Herbicides were applied at rates corresponding to 0.02, 0.1, and 0.5 times the typical use rate (x rate) of each herbicide. Simulated drift treatments were applied at potato emergence, tuber initiation, or tuber bulking. Foliar injury symptoms varied with herbicide, rate, and potato growth stage at the time of application, but were generally most severe with imazapyr and least severe with imazamethabenz. Yield losses also varied with herbicide, rate, and potato growth stage at the time of application, but generally were greater when drift occurred at tuber initiation or tuber bulking than at potato emergence. Losses in U.S. Number 1 (highest quality) yield were greater than losses in total yield, indicating that tuber quality was affected more by the herbicides than was tuber biomass accumulation. U.S. Number 1 yield was not reduced by simulated drift of imazamethabenz at 0.02x but was reduced 25% by the 0.1x rate applied at tuber bulking. At the 0.5x rate, U.S. Number 1 yield was reduced 36, 85, or 92% when drift occurred at potato emergence, tuber initiation, or tuber bulking, respectively. For imazethapyr, U.S. Number 1 yield losses ranged from 0 to 68% for the 0.02x rate; 19 to 98% for the 0.lx rate; and 64 to 100% with the 0.5x rate, depending on potato growth stage at the time of application. Losses were least when drift occurred at potato emergence. Simulated drift of imazapyr at the 0.02x rate applied as potatoes were emerging reduced U.S. Number 1 yield 79%. All other imazapyr treatments caused ≥99% loss in U.S. Number 1 yield.

Weed suppression is one possible benefit of including cover crops in crop rotations. The late spring planting date of dry beans allows for more growth of cover crops in the spring. We assessed the influence of cover crops on weed dynamics in organic dry beans and weed seed persistence. Medium red clover, oilseed radish, and cereal rye were planted the year before dry beans; a no-cover-crop control was also included. After cover-crop incorporation, common lambsquarters, giant foxtail, and velvetleaf seeds were buried in the red clover, cereal rye, and no-cover control treatments and then retrieved 0, 1, 2, 4, 6, and 12 mo after cover-crop incorporation. Dry beans were planted in June and weed emergence and biomass measured. Eleven or more site-years of data were collected for each cover-crop treatment between 2011 and 2013, allowing for structural equation modeling (SEM), in addition to traditional analyses. Cereal rye residue increased giant foxtail and velvetleaf seed persistence by up to 12%; red clover decreased common lambsquarters seed persistence by 22% in 1 of 2 yr relative to the no-cover-crop control. Oilseed radish and incorporated cereal rye rarely reduced weed densities. When red clover biomass exceeded 5 Mg ha−1, soil inorganic N was often higher (5 of 6 site-years), as were weed density and biomass (5 and 4 of 12 main site sample times, respectively). Using SEM, we identified one causal relationship between cover-crop N content and weed biomass at the first flower stage (R1), as mediated through soil N at the time of dry bean planting and at the stage with two fully expanded trifoliates. Increasing cover-crop C : N ratios directly reduced weed biomass at R1, not mediated through changes in soil N. Cover crops that make a significant contribution to soil N may also stimulate weed emergence and growth.

Croftonweed has established itself as a pernicious weed in China. Experiments were conducted to test for anemophily, self-pollination, hand crossing, and apomixis. Additionally, pollen viability, seed set, and seed viability were investigated. Pollen cultured in vitro with the use of 14 culture media did not germinate, nor did self- or cross-pollen germinate on the stigma, and no pollen tubes were seen in the style. Young embryos developed into globular- or heart-shaped embryos before the opening of the captimulum, although neither meiosis to form an embryo sac nor fertilization occurred. Furthermore, seeds developed normally after closed flowers were emasculated and bagged. The plump seed ratio (plump seeds/total seeds) from apomixis (emasculation and bagged treatment) was high (41 ± 17.0%), and plump seed germination ratio exceeded 50%. These results provided additional evidence for the previous conclusion that croftonweed reproduces by apomixis. Apomixis, high seed production, and high seed germination may explain why this weed spreads so rapidly.

Russian thistle is the most problematic broadleaf weed for spring-sown crops in the low-precipitation (< 340 mm yr−1) region of the inland Pacific Northwest of the United States. A 6-yr field experiment was conducted at Lind, WA, to evaluate three postharvest control strategies for Russian thistle in continuous annual spring wheat. Postharvest treatments were (1) tillage with low-disturbance overlapping undercutter V-blade sweeps; (2) paraquat + diuron at the labeled rate, which is widely used by farmers; and (3) an untreated check (letting Russian thistle grow unhindered). The undercutter V-sweep consistently killed all Russian thistle with essentially no residue burial, and no seed was produced. In contrast, the paraquat + diuron treatment halted Russian thistle dry biomass production, but plants continued to extract soil water and produce an average of 310 seeds m−2 on the lower branches. In the check, Russian thistle produced an average of 700 kg ha−1 postharvest dry biomass and 5,670 seeds m−2. The undercutter V-sweep treatment had significantly more water in the 180-cm soil profile at time of wheat harvest, after a killing frost in October, and in mid March as well as greater spring wheat grain yield compared with the herbicide and check treatments. Results show that postharvest tillage with an undercutter V-sweep consistently achieved 100% control, retained ample wheat residue on the surface to control erosion, and was by far the most effective treatment in this experiment.

Clomazone has been successfully used for weed control in rice, but crop injury is a potential problem on light-textured soils. Experiments were conducted to determine the effect of soil characteristics and water potential on plant-available clomazone and rice injury. A centrifugal double-tube technique was used to determine plant-available concentration in soil solution (ACSS), total amount available in soil solution (TASS), and Kd values for clomazone on four soils at four water potentials. A rice bioassay was conducted parallel to the plant-available study to correlate biological availability to ACSS, TASS, and Kd. TASS was significantly different in all soils. The order of increasing TASS for the soils studied was Morey < Edna < Nada < Crowley, which correlated well with soil characteristics. The order of increasing TASS after equilibrium was − 90 < − 75 < − 33 < 0 kPa. TASS values at 0 kPa were greater than two times the TASS values at − 90 kPa. It appears that severe rice injury from clomazone on these soils could occur if TASS > 110 ng g−1 and Kd < 1.1 ml g−1. We propose that the double-tube technique provides a more accurate estimate of available herbicide because the solution–soil ratios are < 0.33:1 and would be more representative of a plant root–herbicide relationship. This technique or some variation possibly could be further developed such that clomazone rates could be more clearly defined particularly on lighter-textured soils. TASS may be a better predictor of plant-available herbicide than ACSS when evaluating moderately to highly water-soluble herbicides in a nonsaturated soil environment.

Cotton (Gossypium hirsutum L. ‘Stoneville 213’) was grown on Lucedale fine sandy loam with sicklepod (Cassia obtusifolia L. ♯ CASOB) and a complex of redroot pigweed (Amaranthus retroflexus L. ♯ AMARE) and smooth pigweed (A. hybridus L. ♯ AMACH) in all possible combinations of 0, 1, 2, 4, 8, and 16 weeds of each species per 7.5 m of row. Seed cotton yields decreased as a quadratic function of increasing weed density. One pigweed and one sicklepod plant per 7.5 m of row reduced yields by 9 and 9.7% in 1979 and 1980, respectively. At low levels of infestation (≤4 weeds/7.5 m of row), the competitive effect of pigweed and sicklepod was additive; however, at the high densities, the competitive effect was not additive. Mechanical harvesting efficiency and cotton maturity were not decreased by any weed density. Sicklepod was more competitive than pigweed in both years.

Similar uptake and translocation patterns were observed in sweet pepper (Capsicum annuum L. ‘Keystone Resistant Giant’) and hot pepper (Capsicum chinense L. ‘Bohemian Chili’) following foliar applications of 14C-bentazon [3-isopropyl-1H-2,1,3-benzothiadiazin-4(3H)-one 2,2-dioxide]. In both species, most of the 14C absorbed remained in the treated leaves, with minimal acropetal and basipetal translocation from the application site. A significantly faster rate of herbicide metabolism occurred in hot pepper at 1 and 4 days after application compared to sweet pepper. Two unidentified metabolites of bentazon were isolated from methanol extracts of the two species.

The influence of several environmental and edaphic factors on alachlor [2-chloro-2′,6′-diethyl-N-(methoxymethyl)acetanilide] selectivity in snap bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) was examined. Crop safety was consistently improved when alachlor was applied preplant incorporated as compared to surface preemergence treatment. Under field conditions, maximum injury occurred either when temperatures during germination were cool and rainfall was minimal, or when temperatures approached or exceeded 27 C and the soil was saturated. In the growth chamber, more damage occurred under low temperature regimes, although volatilization of alachlor from moist soil also produced injury under higher temperatures. Injury was less severe in soils high in organic matter content. Alachlor injury decreased after 5 cm of simulated rainfall were applied on a loamy sand.

Horseweed is a surface-germinating ruderal facultative winter annual. The ruderal nature is a key adaptive characteristic that implicates emergence timing as an important recruitment factor. Experiments were established at three sites in southern Ontario, Canada, from 2009 to 2012 to determine the possible effect of emergence timing of horseweed on plant number, fecundity, and flowering timing. Emerged seedlings were tagged in 0.25-m2 plots in five 2-wk cohorts in the fall and spring of each experimental season. Each plot was followed though until the plants contained within each plot completed their life cycle. Generally, spring-emerging plants were found to flower earlier than fall-emerging plants, but with fall emergence there were higher plant densities in August each season compared with spring emergence. Overall, there was no difference in fecundity between spring- or fall-emerging cohorts, but when cohorts were parsed beyond just spring or fall emergence, we found that plants emerging in early fall and early spring were more fecund and flowered earlier than plants emerging in late fall and late spring. Disturbance (tilled versus not-tilled) significantly affected emergence levels but not emergence timing. The differences in performance among emergence cohorts are likely due to spatial or temporal density-dependent growth advantages. These results show that spring-emerging cohorts of horseweed, especially early spring–emerging cohorts, should not be discounted when considering the weediness of this species, and this may hold true for other facultative winter annual weeds as well.

The application of 2,4–dichlorophenoxyacetic acid (2,4–D) in herbicidal concentrations to plants has resulted in a number of correlations with post-treatment physiological and biochemical changes. Whether these changes are of a secondary nature or actually involved in the basic mechanism of herbicidal action cannot always be determined at the present time. One such case is the influence of 2,4–D on the uptake of minerals from the soil. Wolf et al. demonstrated that the content of potassium was considerably lower and calcium was higher in leaves of 2,4–D treated plants than in controls, but when the analyses from the leaves were combined with those of the stems, these differences largely disappeared. They also noted that chlorine and sulfur were higher in treated plants than in controls, while phosphorus was lower in treated plants than in controls. Fang and Butts showed that the amount of phosphorus in the leaves from 2,4–D treated plants was much less than that found in the leaves of control plants, while the amount in either the stem or root from these two groups of plants showed no significant differences. These results have been confirmed by Rebstock et al. who have shown that the total amount of phosphorus in treated plants was lower than that in the control plants, while at the same time the total phosphorus content of the stem tissue from 2,4–D treated plants was higher than that of the non-treated plants. The phosphorus content of the roots was not appreciably changed from that of the non-treated plants. Rhodes et al. noted that treatment with 2–methyl–4–chlorophenoxyacetic acid (MCPA) greatly lowered the potassium content of tomato and rape plants and suggested that the possible mechanism of MCPA action might be by interference with potassium metabolism. However, in a later publication Rhodes reported no effect of MCPA on the uptake of potassium, calcium or magnesium. With the possibility existing that 2,4–D exerts its action through interference with potassium or phosphorus metabolism, the present study was undertaken to examine more closely the influence of 2,4–D on mineral uptake from the soil.

Measurements were made of plant toxicity and of several physical and chemical properties of spray solutions containing 1,1′-dimethyl-4, 4′-bipyridinium salt (paraquat) and either anionic, nonionic, or cationic surfactants. Surface tension and pH values were variable among 10 surfactant-paraquat mixtures and also at 0.1 and 1.0% surfactant concentrations, but neither showed any correlation with herbicidal activity on corn when all surfactants were considered. All four nonionic, both cationic, and two out of four anionic surfactants markedly enhanced paraquat toxicity at appropriate concentrations. Studies of UV absorbance of herbicide and surfactant solutions, alone and in combination, and adsorption of paraquat-C14 at solution-air interfaces indicate that significant interactions occurred between paraquat and the anionic surfactants. Foliar toxicity studies offered substantiating evidence of such interactions; however, the degree or lack of enhancement of paraquat toxicity was strongly influenced by plant species (corn vs. bean) and the type and concentration of surfactant. No surfactant-paraquat combinations studied were less effective than ⅛ oz/A of paraquat used alone.

The response of purple nutsedge (Cyperus rotundus L.) clones grown from single tubers to 3-amino-1,2,4-triazole (amitrole), butoxyethanol ester of 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid (2,4-D), and ethyl N,N-di-n-propylthiolcarbamate (EPTC), and the response of established nutsedge to amitrole were studied under field conditions of the Georgia Piedmont Plateau. Clones were essentially eradicated by two applications of amitrole initiated up to 4 weeks after shoot emergence and by EPTC incorporated at 1 or 2 weeks after emergence. Excellent control resulted from 9 applications of 2,4-D initiated 1 or 2 weeks after shoot emergence. Timely applications of amitrole to an established stand controlled but did not eradicate nutsedege. This decreased response in an established stand seemed due, in part, to irregular emergence of plants in the established stand.

Five strains of Johnsongrass [Sorghum halepense (L.) Pers.] in selected and random plantings received repeated foliar applications of 2,2-dichloropropionic acid (dalapon). For three characters studied, the residual variance was less with selected plantings than with random plantings. Johnsongrass strains differed in their response to dalapon.

Several experiments were conducted to determine the influence of temperature, relative humidity, leaf age, and additives on 14C-bentazon [3-isopropyl-1H-2,1,3-benzothiadiazin-(4)3H-one 2,2-dioxide] uptake and translocation by redroot pigweed (Amaranthus retroflexus L.), wild mustard [Brassica kaber (DC.) L.C. Wheeler var. pinnatifida (Stokes) L.C. Wheeler] and soybeans (Glycine max L. Merr. ‘Corsoy’). A water soluble linseed oil formulation enhanced absorption and translocation of the 14C-label by redroot pigweed more than did emulsifiable linseed oil, petroleum oil, or a surfactant. The oil additives reduced the 14C-label washed from the treated area of a leaf and increased absorption and translocation compared to bentazon applied alone. Low relative humidity and older leaves of redroot pigweed resulted in less 14C-bentazon absorption than with high relative humidity or younger leaves. The addition of emulsifiable linseed oil reduced the influence of low relative humidity and leaf age upon 14C-bentazon absorption. Comparative absorption and translocation of 14C-bentazon was wild mustard > redroot pigweed > soybeans. Uptake and translocation of 14C-bentazon by redroot pigweed was greater at 30 C than at 10 C.

The photodynamic herbicidal performance of δ-aminolevulinic acid in combination with four chlorophyll biosynthesis modulators was evaluated under greenhouse conditions, using corn, soybean, and ten weed species. Treatments resulted in accumulation of various amounts of protoporphyrin IX and of monovinyl and divinyl Mg-protoporphyrin IX and protochlorophyllide. Accumulation of these tetrapyrroles was accompanied by various degrees of photodynamic injury, depending on treatment, plant species, and somewhat the modulator. The lower photodynamic susceptibility of dark monovinyl/light monovinyl and dark divinyl/light divinyl plants toward the accumulation of monovinyl and divinyl protochlotophyllide, respectively, was attributed to their greater abilities to metabolize these protochlorophyllides in the light. On the other hand, the higher photodynamic susceptibility of the dark monovinyl/light divinyl weed species toward the accumulation of monovinyl protochlorophyllide was attributed to their lower ability to metabolize the accumulated monovinyl protochlorophyllide in the light.

Experiments were conducted at Lexington and Quicksand, KY, in 1989 and 1990 to determine the effect of preplant incorporated clomazone on weed control, crop injury, and yield of broccoli, cauliflower, green cabbage, red cabbage, and pak choi. Oxyfluorfen and trifluralin were included as standard treatments. Greater than 80% weed control was observed at both locations with 0.8 kg ai ha−1 clomazone, with the exception of smooth pigweed at Lexington. All clomazone treatments caused crop injury 2 WAT. Injury was still evident 8 WAT at clomazone rates of 1.7 and 3.4 kg ha−1, but was minor with rates of 0.8 kg ha−1 or less on broccoli, cauliflower, and red cabbage. Injury was less at Quicksand in both years and seasons over all clomazone rates, most likely due to higher soil organic matter content Yields of broccoli and cauliflower treated with 0.8 kg ha−1 clomazone were similar to yields with oxyfluorfen on a 3% organic matter soil at Lexington in 1989. However, clomazone at 0.8 kg ha−1 at Lexington reduced 1989 spring yields of green cabbage, red cabbage, and pak choi and 1990 spring yields of all cole crops as compared to oxyfluorfen. Clomazone at 0.8 kg ha−1 at Quicksand reduced yield of green cabbage and pak choi in spring 1990 only on a 5.2% organic matter soil. Fall yields of broccoli and cauliflower in both years were not reduced by clomazone at 0.8 kg ha−1 or less at either location. Our studies indicated potential for utilization of clomazone on cole crops in higher organic matter soils, especially if some early season crop injury and occasional yield loss can be tolerated.

South American countries are important agricultural players worldwide. Pesticides are key components of their production systems and, in some cases, complement environmentally sound systems, such as no-till, which contributes to preserving soil productivity. In this review, presented in the symposium Global Perspective on Herbicides Being Banned during the 2019 Weed Science Society of America meeting, we describe the regulatory framework and current situation of restricted and banned herbicides in South America. We also discuss where the pressure for herbicide bans is coming from and the opportunities for improving herbicide use and public perception. Argentina, Brazil, Colombia, and Uruguay were chosen as representative countries of the region. They all have regulatory systems in place for pesticide registration and reevaluation based on science. Glyphosate, paraquat, and some 2,4-D formulations are in the spotlight. Glyphosate is being reevaluated in Brazil and, although banned within the city limits in some cities in Argentina and Uruguay, it can still be used in agriculture. Paraquat is prohibited for aerial applications in Colombia and is the only herbicide that needs a professional prescription in Uruguay. It was reevaluated in Brazil, resulting in a use-restriction phase in effect until 2020, when it will be permanently banned. Ester formulations of 2,4-D have been banned in Brazil since the early 2000s and have restrictions in some provinces in Argentina, where 2,4-D butyl and isobutyl esters will be prohibited starting April 2021. In Uruguay, atrazine is the only herbicide banned for agricultural use. The regulatory frameworks ensure that herbicides on the market are effective and safe. Reevaluation is an important part of the system and is conducted when there are reasonable concerns. There are opportunities to continue training pesticide handlers and applicators and to communicate the importance of adopting the best management practices where herbicides are part of the production system.

The growth habits of the crop and competing weed species are important determinants of crop–weed competition. Three cowpea genotypes with similar vegetative vigor but different growth habit were assessed for their relative competitiveness with two weed species. ‘Iron-Clay’ (IC) grows erect, ‘IT89KD-288’ (288) is semierect, and ‘UCR 779’ (779) is prostrate. Common purslane, a short-statured weed, and common sunflower, a tall species, were planted within the cowpea rows. Cowpea canopy height and width, leaf area, dry weight, and light intensity above and below sunflower and cowpea canopies were measured weekly from 21 d after planting. Sunflower reduced the leaf area, amount of light received, and biomass of all cowpea genotypes. Purslane reduced the leaf area of 779 and the biomass of 288 and 779, but the biomass and leaf area of IC were not affected. The presence of sunflower increased the height of IC and 288, but the presence of purslane decreased the canopy height of 779. IC reduced sunflower biomass, whereas IC and 779 reduced purslane biomass. IC and 288 reduced sunflower leaf area, whereas IC and 779 reduced purslane leaf area. The growth analysis of biomass, leaf area, and canopy height of cowpeas and weeds showed similar results. The experiments indicate that cowpea genotypes differ in their ability to compete with purslane and sunflower. IC was the most competitive genotype, suggesting that an erect growth habit may be more effective in suppressing weeds than semierect or prostrate growth habits.

Sicklepod was grown in controlled-environment chambers in 16 day/night temperature regimes ranging from 19/11 to 34/26 C. Maximum dry weight, leaf area, plant height, node number, and leaf number after 46 d occurred at 29/26 and 34/26 C. Temperatures of 29/21 C or lower reduced dry weight by more than 50%. Leaf number, leaf weight, and leaf area were more sensitive to changes in day temperature, whereas plant height and root, stem, and total dry weight were more sensitive to night temperature. Dry matter production was more closely correlated with leaf area duration than with its other component, net assimilation rate. Leaf appearance rate and dry matter production were linearly related to average daily temperature. The low-temperature threshold for leaf production was 13 ± 1 C. Observations of plant development in photoperiods ranging from 10 to 16 h confirmed that sicklepod is a short-day plant with a critical day length of 13 to 14 h. No reproductive development occurred in photoperiods of 15 or 16 h. Seedlings that emerged in 10-h photoperiods required more than 1-wk exposure to short days to initiate and continue reproductive development. Plants from a North Carolina population flowered earlier than plants from a Florida population in photoperiods of 12, 13, or 14 h, but in an 11-h photoperiod the two populations flowered at the same time.
