The experimental herbicide EMD-IT 5914 [difunon, 5-dimethyl-amino-methylene-2-oxo-4-phenyl-2,5-dihydrofurane-carbonitrile-(3)] was applied to unicellular algae and its effect on growth, oxygen evolution and photosynthetic electron transport measured. Inhibition of biosynthesis of chloroplast pigments was evaluated in relation to the activities of porphobilinogenase and δ-aminolevulinic acid dehydratase. The only direct effect of the herbicide was an inhibition of carotenoid biosynthesis but not of photosynthetic electron transport or enzymic activities connected with porphyrin biosynthesis. Chlorophyll bleaching is considered to be a secondary process.

The remarkable spread of a seed-bearing Spartina species (formerly incorrectly known as S. townsendii H. & J. Groves, now awaiting a new name) in mudflat areas on European coasts in the past 70 years is widely known. It was suspected from the sudden appearance of a new Spartina species in Southampton Water during the latter part of the 19th Century amongst accidentally introduced Spartina alterniflora Lois, and the British native Spartina maritima (Curt.) Fernald, that the plant was of hybrid origin. Some of the plants were found to be polyploid and this suggested an explanation for the extreme vigour and fertility of those plants which rapidly spread from Southampton Water, east and west along the south coast of England.

Studies quantifying weed seed production as a function of weed density are expensive and difficult, and lack of these data is a common limitation in modeling weed population dynamics over time. Observed empirical and theoretical relationships between crop yield loss curves and weed seed production curves led us to the hypothesis that there should be a strong relationship between the shapes of these two curves. Data from literature sources were evaluated to test this hypothesis for hyperbolic curves and to determine if the data describing the crop yield loss caused by weeds could provide estimates of the shape parameter of a hyperbolic equation for describing density dependence in weed reproduction. For each of 162 data sets, a shape parameter (N50) and a scale parameter (U) were estimated for an increasing hyperbolic model both for absolute crop yield loss as a function of weed density (N50YL, UYL) and for weed yield (either total biomass yield or seed yield) as a function of weed density (N50WY, UWY). N50YL was strongly correlated with N50WY across all data sets, with an apparent 1:1 relationship between the two. This relationship suggests that the shape parameter of the yield loss model may substitute for the shape parameter of a hyperbolic model describing the density-dependence of weed seed production. This substitution will be most useful in weed population modeling situations where data describing crop yield loss as a function of weed density are already available, but data describing weed seed production as a function of weed density are not available.

Experiments were conducted to determine the effect of triglycerides, free fatty acids (FFA), and fatty acid methyl esters (FAME) on the foliar absorption, translocation, and phytotoxicity of quizalofop. Absorption, translocation, and phytotoxicity of quizalofop in oats were greater when quizalofop was applied with FFA or FAME than with their respective triglycerides. Triglycerides and FFA generally enhanced quizalofop absorption and translocation more when they contained unsaturated than saturated fatty acids. Methylation of the fatty acids reduced differences among fatty acids, but methyl stearate and methyl linolenate enhanced absorption of quizalofop less than the other FAME for oats and yellow foxtail. Quizalofop absorption and phytotoxicity to oats were greater when applied with sunflower oil, sunflower oil FFA, and sunflower oil FAME than with the corresponding linseed oil derivatives. Emulsifier generally reduced differences between linseed oil and sunflower oil derivatives in their enhancement of absorption, translocation, and phytotoxicity of quizalofop.

Storage of intact Texas gourd [Cucurbita texana (A.) Gray] pepos for 21 days after harvest increased germination of seeds from pepos collected 15 to 47 days after flowering. Germination increased as day length decreased and as osmotic potential of germination media increased. Temperatures of 20, 25, and 30C resulted in 72, 93, and 99% germination, respectively. No seeds germinated at 10 or 40C. Seedling emergence decreased as planting depth increased, with no emergence from 12.5 cm. Control of Texas gourd in soybeans [Glycine max (L.) Merr.] was achieved with preemergence applications of metribuzin [4-amino-6-tert-butyl-3-(methylthio)-as-triazin-5(4H)-one], metribuzin plus alachlor [2-chloro-2′,6′-diethyl-N-(methoxymethyl)-acetanilide], and oxadiazon [2-tert-butyl-4 (2,4-dichloro-5-isopropoxyphenyl)-δ2-1,3,4-oxadiazolin-5-one], with successful control partially dependent on soil and climatological conditions. Postemergence treatments that resulted in adequate control included applications of acifluorfen {5-[2-chloro-4-(trifluoromethyl)-phenoxy]-2-nitrobenzoic acid}, oxyfluorfen [2-chloro-1-(3-ethoxy-4-nitrophenoxy)-4-(trifluoromethyl) benzene], and metribuzin plus 2,4-DB [4-(2,4-dichlorophenoxy)butyric acid] applied at an early soybean growth stage and repeated.

We previously reported that napropamide [2-(α-naphthoxy)-N,N-diethylpropionamide] was highly toxic to achlorophyllous callus of tomato (Lycopersicon esculentum Mill. ‘San Marzano’), whereas foliar application to seedlings was almost without effect. Experiments were performed to ascertain the effects of napropamide on green and achlorophyllous calli of tomato and broadleaf dock (Rumex obtusifolius L.). The growth of achlorophyllous tissues was more severely inhibited. Foliar applications were not as inhibitory in both species. Napropamide was applied to tomato seedlings via roots and cut shoots and root growth was more inhibited than shoot growth. Thus napropamide is toxic to achlorophyllous tissue and is either less toxic to, or detoxified by green tissue.

Pelleted tebuthiuron {N-[5-(1,1-dimethylethyl)-1,3,4-thiadiazol-2-yl] -N,N′-dimethylurea} was applied aerially on duplicate plots at 2.2 and 4.4 kg/ha in spring, summer, fall, and winter of 1978 and 1979. Treatments were made near Bryan in the Claypan Resource Area of Texas on an area supporting a stand of mixed brush consisting mostly of oak (Quercus) species. Soils were sampled at eight locations in each plot at depths of 0 to 15 and 15 to 30 cm in March 1980. Bioassays using ‘Tamcot’ cotton (Gossypium hirsutum L.) and ‘Caddo’ wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) were done in the greenhouse to detect levels of tebuthiuron residues in the soil. A standard curve was developed to compare known concentrations of tebuthiuron to the unknown content from treated plots. Tebuthiuron persisted in all treated soils and ranged from 0.08 to 0.49 μg/g. Concentrations were usually greater in soil treated in 1979 than in 1978 and in soil treated with 4.4 kg/ha of tebuthiuron than 2.2 kg/ha. No consistent differences in tebuthiuron residues existed either between soil depths or among seasons of application using the bioassay.

Foliar applications of 2-chloroethylphosphonic acid (CEPA) 7 days prior to spot applications of 14C-labelled 3,6-dichloro-o-anisic acid (dicamba) to leaves of wild garlic (Allium vineale L.) increased basipetal translocation of the dicamba as measured 7 days after dicamba treatment. High concentrations of CEPA were inhibitory. The ethylene released from CEPA degradation may have altered the metabolic “sink-source” relationships within the wild garlic plants allowing increased basipetal translocation of subsequent applications of dicamba when low concentrations of CEPA were applied.

The physiological basis of glufosinate resistance for two resistant (R) rice mutants, lines ‘R11-2’ and ‘R11-3’, was studied. Seven days after the application of 0.54 mM glufosinate, two susceptible (S) lines, i.e., variety (var.) ‘FSK’ and its inbred line ‘FSK-3’, and a reference var. Tainung 67 (TNG 67) suffered severe injury, whereas the two R lines exhibited resistance. Dose–response analysis and survival rate 14 d after treatment with 1.5 mM glufosinate also supported this observation. A 14C-glufosinate experiment showed that more labeled herbicide was absorbed by leaves of R11-2 than S lines 48 h after treatment (HAT), but the partitioning of absorbed glufosinate to each part of the shoot did not differ between R and S lines. Although a higher degradation of glufosinate in R line R11-2 was found as compared with the two S lines, i.e., 46% vs. 38 to 40%, the actual concentration of glufosinate in R line was still higher than that in S lines. Foliar application of glufosinate resulted in less inhibition of in vivo activity of glutamine synthetase (GS; EC 6.3.1.2) as well as a lower accumulation of ammonium 24 HAT in R line than in S lines. Further kinetic study of GS showed that cytosolic GS in line R11-2, with a higher enzyme-inhibition constant (Ki) value to glufosinate, was less sensitive to the toxic action of this herbicide. Therefore, a higher metabolism of, and more important, a lower susceptibility of, the target protein GS to this herbicide are suggested to contribute significantly to glufosinate resistance in these rice lines.

Herbicides are the basis for conventional management of purple nutsedge, one of the world's most troublesome weeds. However, as concern rises over their environmental impact, farmers are being required to reduce herbicide usage. Herbicide efficacy is strongly affected by weed growth stage and density at application, and when herbicides are applied under optimal conditions, low rates can provide maximal control efficacy (CE). Therefore, this study aimed to determine the time window for control of purple nutsedge using a low rate of herbicide, based on an effective degree days (EDDs) model, at low (one tuber) and high (10 tubers) densities. Two experiments were performed under field conditions, in the summers of 2009 and 2010. Rate of 3.75 g a.i. ha−1 trifloxysulfuron was applied once on each of five individual application dates. The growth of both treated and untreated plots was evaluated by means of leaf cover area (LCA) and biomass, which were then used to establish the time window for control. Results showed differences in both growth parameters between low and high tuber densities. The high-density patches reached LCA and fresh biomass values of 1,367 g and 1.12 m2, respectively, compared to 604 g and 0.69 m2, respectively, in the lower density patches. The favorable control periods based on biomass and LCA for the lower density patches were set to later dates than those for the higher density patches, 626 EDD compared to 483 EDD for biomass, and 786 EDD compared to 502 EDD for LCA, respectively. Although differences between the biomass- and LCA-based favorable control periods were observed at both tuber densities, the computed linear relations between the two growth parameters enabled adjusting them and setting the appropriate control period.

Experiments were conducted to determine the effect of 3-(m-trifluoromethylphenyl)-1,1-dimethylurea (fluometuron) and 2,4-bis(isopropylamino)-6-methylmercapto-s-triazine (prometryne) on oxygen consumption by mitochondria isolated from the hypocotyls of soybean (Glycine max L., var. Lee) seedlings. Prometryne caused a decrease in second state 3 oxidation of both malate and succinate, but the decrease was overcome by 2,4-dinitrophenol (hereinafter referred to as DNP), indicating a response similar to that of oligomycin. Fluometuron caused an increase in second state 4 oxidation of both malate and succinate and overcame the inhibition of oxidative phosphorylation caused by oligomycin, indicating an uncoupling response similar to DNP. Fluometuron was also shown to reverse the inhibition of oxidative phosphorylation caused by prometryne. Concentrations of prometryne causing the 50% inhibitory response were somewhat higher than those reported for s-triazines on other tissues, while those for fluometuron were well within the inhibitory range reported for other substituted ureas.

Seed shatter is an important weediness trait on which the efficacy of harvest weed seed control (HWSC) depends. The level of seed shatter in a species is likely influenced by agroecological and environmental factors. In 2016 and 2017, we assessed seed shatter of eight economically important grass weed species in soybean [Glycine max (L.) Merr.] from crop physiological maturity to 4 wk after maturity at multiple sites spread across 11 states in the southern, northern, and mid-Atlantic United States. From soybean maturity to 4 wk after maturity, cumulative percent seed shatter was lowest in the southern U.S. regions and increased moving north through the states. At soybean maturity, the percent of seed shatter ranged from 1% to 70%. That range had shifted to 5% to 100% (mean: 42%) by 25 d after soybean maturity. There were considerable differences in seed-shatter onset and rate of progression between sites and years in some species that could impact their susceptibility to HWSC. Our results suggest that many summer annual grass species are likely not ideal candidates for HWSC, although HWSC could substantially reduce their seed output during certain years.

A metabolite of swep [methyl N-(3,4-dichlorophenyl)-carbamate] was detected in the straw, hulls and bran layer of rice but not in the polished rice grain (endosperm) or bran oil, using microcoulometric gas chromatography (MCGC). This metabolite was identified as a swep-lignin complex which is quite stable and not extractable from plant tissues by common organic solvents. Upon extraction with HCl-dioxane, a portion of this complex is hydrolyzed to swep and soluble products of lignin. The swep was purified by adsorption chromatography and identified by infrared spectroscopy and microcoulometric gas chromatography retention times. The mechanism of swep-lignin complex formation is considered to be an example of a common detoxification mechanism by plants through immobilization.

Bioeconomic sugarbeet weed management models for preplant, postemergence, and layby herbicides, and late-season handweeding decisions are presented. The personal computer/spreadsheet models are based on number of weed seed in soil, field survey of weed populations, growth stages of weeds and sugarbeets, expected yield loss from weeds, herbicide weed control, weed control cost, and sugarbeet price. The models incorporate two producer risk levels. Several weed scenarios were used to verify the models for reasonable recommendations.

Interference from broadleaf signalgrass at a density of 180 plants/m2 reduced rough rice yields of ‘Bond’ a maximum of 48% at 95 days after rice emergence and reduced yields of ‘Mars' a maximum of 21% from season-long interference. Interference durations of 40 days or longer reduced the panicles/m2, culms/m2, and plant height of rice. Straw dry weight of Bond and Mars was reduced 41 and 26%, respectively, from season-long interference. Increased durations of weed interference did not affect the number of spikelets/panicle, percent filled spikelets, rough kernel weight, or head rice yield of either cultivar. Broadleaf signalgrass produced less dry weight and fewer panicles/m2 when grown with Mars than with Bond.

Vapor pressures of technical-grade triallate [S-(2,3,3-trichloroallyl)diisopropylthiocarbamate] were calculated from the vapor density measurements determined at seven different temperatures, using a gas-saturation technique and solid adsorbent traps. The equation Log10P = 11.05 – (4401/T) delineated the relationship between the apparent vapor pressure and temperature, giving the triallate vapor pressure values from 1.083 × 10−4 to 16.371 × 10−4 mm Hg over the temperature range of 20 to 45 C. The vapor flux of triallate from glass surfaces was of the order of 5.7 μg cm−2 h−1 at 25 C.

Seed germination of Italian thistle (Carduus pycnocephalus L.) and slenderflower thistle (Carduus tenuiflorus Curt.) was rapid and high, with no strong requirements for afterripening. Both species germinated at a wide range of alternating temperatures from −2 to 40 C. Their germination-temperature profiles were similar, with Italian thistle germinating over a slightly wider range of temperatures. The achenes of both species have abundant mucilage. This mucilage, by improving water retention, tended to increase germination on the surface of clay soil.

In 1979 and 1980, ivyleaf morningglory [Ipomoea hederacea (L.) Jacq. # IPOHE] seed were planted in field plots at monthly intervals beginning with March and continuing through October. During the first 9 weeks, seedlings from the July plantings grew more rapidly than those from the other monthly plantings and produced the heaviest fresh weights. Vegetative growth slowed after the 9-week harvest and seedlings from June plantings had heavier fresh weights at the 12-week harvest. Plants from the July planting produced the greatest number of seed at both the 9- and 12-week harvests. After scarifying, seed produced by plants from April through August (12-week harvest) germinated best with the 27/32 C night/day air temperature regime, but also germinated at 15/21, 21/27, and 27/32 C regimes. Ivyleaf morningglory seed did not germinate at an air temperature regime of 10/15 C. With an air temperature regime of 32/38 C the germination of some lots began to decrease.

The effects of soil temperature, moisture, and herbicide concentration on the rate of degradation of dinitramine (N4,N4-diethyl-α,α,α-trifluoro-3,5-dinitrotoluene-2,4-diamine) were measured in clay loam and sandy loam in the laboratory. In sandy loam, the rate of degradation increased with increasing temperature. In clay loam, the rate of degradation increased from 10 to 30 C and decreased at 40 C. Soil moisture content influenced the rate of degradation in the following order: 22>11>>2.2% (air-dry) for clay loam and 12.0 = 6.0>>0.5% (air-dry) for sandy loam. First-order half-lives ranged from 3.2 at 30 C to 47 weeks at 10 C in clay loam, and 2.3 at 40 C to 31 weeks at 10 C in sandy loam. Applications in 2 yr did not cause buildup of dinitramine in the field. A mathematical model was used in an attempt to correlate laboratory and field data.

Experiments were conducted to confirm the bentazon susceptibility of corn inbred GA209 and determine the physiological basis of this susceptibility. Bentazon (1.1 to 4.4 kg ha-1) plus crop oil concentrate (1% by vol) did not cause visible injury or dry weight loss of corn inbred B73 but caused 66 to 89% visual injury and 62 to 70% dry weight reduction of GA209 1 wk after treatment. Bentazon (2.2 kg ha-1) inhibited variable chlorophyll fluorescence decay in GA209 and B73 8 h after treatment. Variable fluorescence decay recovered in B73, but not in GA209, 96 h after treatment. Absorption and translocation of 14C from 14C-bentazon was greater in GA209 than B73 during a 48-h time course. Both inbreds converted bentazon to a polar metabolite which formed 6-hydroxybentazon upon hydrolysis with β-glucosidase. However, 63% of absorbed 14C from 14C-bentazon remained in the parent form in GA209 compared to 25% in B73 over a 72-h time course. A decreased ability of GA209 to metabolize bentazon may explain bentazon sensitivity of this inbred compared to B73.
