Two field experiments were carried out from 1993 to 1995 to evaluate the critical period of weed control and to develop suitable weed management practices for jungle rice, horse purslane, and cockscomb in soybean. Horse purslane was more competitive during early growth stages (up to 45 days after sowing [DAS]) and cockscomb was more competitive during later growth stages, whereas jungle rice was competitive throughout the growing season. The critical period of weed control was found to be 30 to 45 DAS. Weed-free maintenance up to 45 DAS resulted in a 74% increase in grain yield of soybean over the unweeded control. Keeping soybean weed free for 45 d or allowing weeds to remain in the crop for less than 30 d resulted in no significant yield loss. Sequential application of a reduced rate of soil-applied trifluralin 1.0 kg ha–1 (0.67 ×) with postemergence fluazifop 0.75 kg ha–1 (0.75 ×) or a reduced rate of soil-applied trifluralin or pendimethalin at 1.0 kg ha–1 (0.67 ×) followed by hand hoeing 35 DAS provided better control of a broad spectrum of weeds than a single application of a postemergence herbicide applied at reduced or recommended rates. Integration of reduced rates of soil-applied herbicides with post-emergence herbicides or hand hoeing 35 DAS produced soybean yields similar to the hand-weeded treatment. Compared to the weed-free or integrated weed control, a single application of soil-applied or postemergence herbicide did not control a broad spectrum of weeds and reduced soybean yield.

Kochia is a weed found in many sunflower fields across the Northern Great Plains. There is limited information about the ability of sunflower plants to compete with kochia, specifically when the weed grows both in the crop row and in the inter-row space, as in zero tillage systems that rely solely on herbicides to manage weeds. An experiment was conducted over seven site–yr, from 2009 to 2011, to determine the effect of kochia density and relative time of kochia seedling recruitment on sunflower growth and development, yield and seed quality. Kochia seed was broadcast on the soil surface at six densities, into sunflowers planted in 75-cm rows, either at the same time as the sunflower crop was planted (early weed seedling recruitment), or when the sunflowers were at the four-leaf stage (late weed seedling recruitment). When kochia plants emerged at the same time as the sunflowers, yield was reduced by up to 76% and sunflower head diam was reduced in four site–yr, stem diam was reduced in three site–yr, height was reduced in two site–yr and the number of leaves per sunflower plant was reduced in two site–yr The 5% action threshold for early emerging kochia was four kochia plants m−2 in the combined site–yr analysis. Additionally, early recruiting kochia seedlings reduced sunflower seed size and seed weight at two and three site–yr, respectively. Kochia plants that emerged after the four-leaf stage of the sunflower crop did not affect sunflower growth and development, yield, or seed quality. To reduce the potential for yield and seed quality losses, sunflower growers should be proactive with respect to managing kochia in sunflowers, particularly when the kochia plants emerge at about the same time as the sunflowers.

In Australia, glyphosate is widely used in glyphosate-tolerant crops and fallows to control weeds such as common sowthistle (Sonchus oleraceus L.). It has been hypothesized that glyphosate at sublethal doses, as a consequence of herbicide drift, may have a stimulatory effect on S. oleraceus growth. In 2017, pot trials were conducted to evaluate the effect of low doses of glyphosate on growth and seed production of this weed at the Weed Science Screenhouse Facility at the University of Queensland, Australia. At the 4- to 5-leaf stage (3-wk-old rosette), plants were treated with low doses of glyphosate (0 [control], 5, 10, 20, 40, 80, and 800 g ae ha−1), and their responses were recorded until plant maturity. The study was repeated after completion of the first experimental run. An additional glyphosate dose (2.5 g ha−1) was added in the second run. The low doses of glyphosate (<40 g ha−1) caused a significant increase in S. oleraceus plant height and number of leaves compared with the no-glyphosate treatment. The highest stimulatory effect was observed at 5 g ha−1. At 5 g ha−1 glyphosate, S. oleraceus seed production increased by 154% and 101% in the first and second experimental runs, respectively, compared with the no-glyphosate treatment. The results of this study suggest that the sublethal doses of glyphosate produced hormetic effects on growth and seed production of S. oleraceus that changed the dynamics of weed–crop competition.

An effective management plan for invasive herb populations must consider the potential for regeneration from the soil seedbank. To test this potential, we examined two species, Japanese stiltgrass and garlic mustard, at deciduous forest sites in southeastern Ohio. Seeds were buried in nylon mesh bags and recovered at regular intervals over 24 mo. Recovered seeds were tested for germination and viability. Burial was replicated on north- and south-facing slopes to test for environmental control of dormancy state. Stiltgrass seeds experienced severe mortality in the soil, rarely surviving the full 24 mo. Stiltgrass showed fractional germination in the lab ranging from 86% to 89% of viable seeds in late spring (the season of natural seedling emergence) to complete nongermination in winter. Most garlic mustard seeds survived through the experimental period (82% and 88% survival across 24 mo) with consistently low mortality (0% to 13%) unrelated to season. Slope aspect had no significant effect on survival or dormancy state in either species. Extrapolation of garlic mustard mortality implies that reproduction would need to be suppressed for a substantial period (perhaps >10 yr) to ensure eradication of a population. In stiltgrass, rapid seed mortality suggests that control can be achieved in 2 to 4 yr.

Sublethal doses of glyphosate [N-(phosphonomethyl)glycine] applied in a 50-μl drop in the partially furled third true leaf of 30-day-old sorghum [Sorghum bicolor (L.) Moench ‘Tophand’] seedlings induced basal stem swelling and bud release. Combining glyphosate with cycloheximide {3-[2-(3,5-dimethyl-2-oxycyclohexyl)-2-hydroxyethyl]glutarimide}, a cytokinin [N6 (2-isopentenyl)adenine], or L-phenylalanine significantly reduced the incidence of basal stem swelling. No such reductions was observed when indole-3-acetic acid or L-tyrosine was combined with glyphosate. The fresh weights of the seedlings given the combination treatments reflected the effects of glyphosate, except one combination that included tyrosine significantly reduced fresh weight and three combinations that included phenylalanine significantly increased fresh weight.

Development of genetically modified (GM) wheat has raised concerns about the movement and persistence of transgenes in agroecosystems and the ability of growers to segregate GM from conventional wheat. Wheat as a crop has been studied extensively but the population biology of volunteer wheat is not well characterized. Artificial seed bank studies were conducted in western Canada to provide baseline data on volunteer wheat seed persistence. Seed from two cultivars of Canadian western red spring wheat, ‘AC Splendor’ and ‘AC Superb’, were buried in mesh bags at three depths (0, 2, and 15 cm) in two different environments in the fall of 2003 and 2004. In addition, in 2004, ‘AC Superb’ seed were separated into small and large seed lots and buried with a medium seed lot to examine the influence of seed size on seed bank persistence. Seeds were withdrawn at intervals to assess seed germination and viability and regression analysis conducted on the viable seed at each sample period, after burial. Seed viability was variable within years and sites, and declined exponentially over time. In the spring, approximately 6 mo after initiation, viable seed ranged from 1 to 43%. With the exception of a single site and year, seeds on the soil surface persisted significantly longer than buried seeds and increasing burial depth accelerated loss of viability. The maximum viability of wheat seeds at 0, 2, and 15 cm depth in the spring following planting was 43, 7, and 2%, respectively. The extinction of viability for 99% (EX99) of the seed was estimated from regression analysis. The EX99 values of seeds buried at 0, 2, and 15 cm ranged from 493 to 1,114, 319 to 654, and 175 to 352 d after planting (DAP), respectively, with the exception of one site in 2003 where burial depths were not different and all had an EX99 value of 456 DAP. Seed size and cultivar did not significantly affect persistence, with the exception of one site in 2003 where the difference in EX99 values was 20 DAP. The rapid loss of seed viability limits temporal gene flow via volunteers in years following a wheat crop. Results provide data on spring wheat biology to aid in Canadian environmental biosafety assessments of GM wheat and will be incorporated into a mechanistic model to predict wheat gene flow on the Canadian prairies.

Inheritance of glyphosate resistance was investigated in hairy fleabane populations from California as part of providing the information needed to predict and manage resistance and to gain insight into resistance mechanism (or mechanisms) present in the populations. Three glyphosate-resistant individuals grown from seed collected from distinct sites near Fresno, CA, were crossed to individuals from the same susceptible population to create reciprocal F1 populations. A single individual from each of the F1 populations was used to create a backcross population with a susceptible maternal parent, and an F2 population. Based on dose response analyses, reciprocal F1 populations were not statistically different from each other, more similar to the resistant parent, and statistically different from the susceptible parent, consistent with nuclear control of the trait and dominance to incomplete dominance of resistance over susceptibility in all three crosses. Glyphosate resistance in two of the three crosses segregated in the backcross and the F2 populations as a single-locus trait. In the remaining cross, the resistant parent had approximately half the resistance level as the other two resistant parents, and the segregation of glyphosate resistance in backcross and F2 populations conformed to a two-locus model with resistance alleles acting additively and at least two copies of the allele required for expression of resistance. This two-locus model of the segregation of glyphosate resistance has not been reported previously. Variation in the pattern of inheritance and the level of resistance indicate that multiple resistance mechanisms may be present in hairy fleabane populations in California.

Three chlorsulfuron-resistant kochia accessions were tested for levels of resistance to sulfonylurea and imidazolinone herbicides, based on whole plant response and sensitivity of the target enzyme. The resistant Minot and Chester accessions were not affected by treatment with 175 g ha−1 chlorsulfuron, and I50 values for the Chester accession ranged from 22-fold (metsulfuron-methyl) to 196-fold (chlorsulfuron) higher than the susceptible Bozeman accession. However, the Chester accession was 1.5- to 2-fold more resistant than Minot to five sulfonylurea herbicides, as determined by acetolactate synthase (ALS) I50 values. The third resistant accession (Power) displayed an intermediate response and was only 2- to 5-fold more resistant than the susceptible Bozeman accession to all sulfonylurea herbicides tested. The Minot and Chester accessions were slightly cross-resistant to four imidazolinone herbicides, ranging from 2-fold (imazamethabenz, imazethapyr, and imazaquin) to 6-fold (imazapyr) more resistant than the Bozeman accession, but cross-resistance levels did not differ appreciably between the Minot and Chester accessions. The Power accession was not cross-resistant to the four imidazolinone herbicides tested. The results demonstrate that degrees of ALS resistance and cross-resistance are highly variable among kochia populations: these differences may be due to the type of mutation in the gene encoding ALS.

Differences in the phytotoxicity of tebuthiuron (N-[5-(1,1-dimethylethyl)-1,3,4-thiadiazol-2-yl]-N,N′-dimehtylurea) to nine plant species were observed on the basis of calculated GR50 values. Japanese brome (Bromus japonicus Thunb.) with a GR50 value of 0.016 ppmw was the most susceptible and corn (Zea mays L. ‘Gold Rush’) with a GR50 value of 0.436 ppmw the least susceptible. There was some growth suppression with foliar application but primary activity on all species was attributed to root uptake. The most significant translocation of labeled tebuthiuron was to the tops of common ragweed (Ambrosia artemisiifolia L.) plants treated through the nutrient solution where 24.5% of the total amount recovered was detected after 24 h. Only 7.3% of the total amount recovered was detected in the top of rye (Secale cereale L. ‘Elbon’) plants with the same treatment. With both species, more than 90% of the radioactivity recovered following foliar treatments was still in the treated leaf after 24 h. Less than 5.5% of the recovered activity for both species was in the tops, less than 3% in the roots, and less than 1.5% was in the nutrient solution.

Increased soybean seed cost has generated recent interest in reducing seeding rates to improve economic returns. However, low seeding rates result in reduced established plant stands with slower canopy development, and canopy development is an important element of integrated weed management (IWM). Field studies were conducted in 2012 and 2013 in Wisconsin to determine the trade-off between reduced seeding rates and PRE residual herbicide use for POST herbicide exposure. Soybean was planted in mid May in 38-cm-wide rows at five seeding rates ranging from 148,200 to 469,300 seeds ha−1. A PRE application of metolachlor plus fomesafen was made to half of the plots. One of two POST herbicide programs were sprayed at the V4 soybean growth stage to determine whether blending herbicide-resistant (HR) and non-HR soybean cultivars could be a practical alternative to reduce soybean seed expenses while maintaining the potential benefit of weed suppression before the POST herbicide application. An increase in seeding rate did not reduce the density or size of weeds exposed to the POST herbicide, and furthermore, end-of-season weed density and biomass were not influenced. In contrast, the use of a PRE herbicide reduced total weed density and biomass before POST application by 93 and 95%, respectively, in both years. In 2012, the season was dry early and harvest stands of 161,100 and 264,100 plants ha−1 produced 95% of the maximum yield for the PRE and no-PRE treatments, respectively. The difference was not repeated in 2013 with adequate early season rainfall. In conclusion, PRE herbicide use produced maximum yield with fewer plants per hectare by limiting early season weed competition and reduced weeds exposed to POST herbicide application thus contributing to HR management (HRM). In contrast, higher plant densities generated within the seeding rate range of this study did little to improve IWM or HRM.

Foliar spray retention, absorption and translocation, and the dissipation of 2,4-DB [4-(2,4-dichlorophenoxy)butyric acid] and 2,4-D [(2,4-dichlorophenoxy)acetic acid] were examined to determine their importance as selectivity factors in the response of two 2,4-DB-tolerant legumes, alfalfa (Medicago sativa L.) and red clover (Trifolium pratense L.), and two susceptible broadleaf weeds, redroot pigweed (Amaranthus retroflexus L.) and common cocklebur (Xanthium pensylvanicum Wallr.). The legumes were as effective as the broadleaf weeds in metabolizing (beta-oxidizing) 2,4-DB to 2,4-D. The relatively greater tolerance of the legumes than of the broadleaf weeds to 2,4-DB arose from a combination of poorer spray retention, less effective absorption and translocation, and a more rapid degradation of the 2,4-D arising from the beta-oxidation of 2,4-DB.

To broaden the spectrum of herbicides useful in potato production, the bxn gene for bromoxynil resistance, which encodes a nitrilase specific for bromoxynil, was introduced into ‘Lemhi Russet’ potato by Agrobacterium tumefaciens-mediated transformation. In GR50 studies, transformed potato clones were at least 70-fold more resistant to bromoxynil than the untransformed control. Resistance was due to rapid metabolism of bromoxynil to 3,5-dibromo-4-hydroxybenzoic acid, followed by conjugation to polar compounds. In yield trials, the best performing transgenic clones had total tuber yields equal to the untreated, untransformed control, but U.S. No. 1 tuber yields were 15 to 30% lower than the untreated, untransformed control. Tubers from three out of four transgenic clones had specific gravities, percent solids, and fry color similar to or better than the untreated, untransformed control. The data suggest that lower U.S. No. 1 yields in the transgenic clones were due to somaclonal variation and that expression of the bxn transgene had no consistent, detrimental effect on internal tuber quality.

Vegetative cover of weeds was determined in 84 agricultural fields representing a number of crops in Alaska. Multivariate statistical techniques were used with weed, soil, and management data to determine if weed vegetation was related to particular environmental and management variables. Field age was the variable that best explained the variation in vegetation composition. In fields recently cleared, native species were most important, being replaced by introduced weed species with increasing field age. Field horsetail (Equisetum arvense L.) was an exceptional native species that persisted under cultivation. Total weed cover was low in the first few years of cultivation, but increased as introduced species such as common lambsquarters (Chenopodium album L.), common chickweed [Stellaria media (L.) Cyrillo], quackgrass [Agropyron repens (L.) Beauv.], and foxtail barley (Hordeum jubatum L.) became more prevalent. A number of introduced species such as hempnettle (Galeopsis tetrahit L.) and Pennsylvania smartweed (Polygonum pensylvanicum L.) were restricted to just a few fields, emphasizing the importance of using weed-free seed and other management practices to minimize the spread of introduced weeds.

Any plant not sown from seed is often labeled a weed in improved pastures of New Zealand. Most improved pastures are a mix of perennial ryegrass and white clover but generally are infested with broadleaf weeds. Changes in forage production due to individual weeds were determined using measurements of perennial ryegrass and white clover before and after dairy cattle, beef cattle, or sheep grazing under, near, and far from individual plants of six rosette-forming weed species throughout a growing season. The larger weeds, bull thistle and musk thistle, reduced the amount of forage utilized 42 and 72%, respectively, in beef cattle– and sheep-grazed hill-country pastures. Forage production under and near Canada thistle, hedge mustard, broadleaf plantain, and hairy buttercup in a dairy pasture was greater (136, 140, 178, and 450%, respectively) than in the control areas. Although the dairy pasture was grazed following recommended grazing procedures, our results indicate that this grazing system was not maximizing forage yield potentials of perennial ryegrass and white clover and that these weeds served as an indicator that the pasture was being overgrazed.

Triethylamine salts of 4-amino-3,5,6-trichloropicolinic acid (picloram) plus (2,4,5-trichlorophenoxy)acetic acid (2,4,5-T) (1:1) sprays were more effective for the control of huisache (Acacia farnesiana (L.) Willd.) than for the control of Macartney rose (Rosa bracteata Wendl.) at 13 dates of application in 1969 and 1970. Both species were more controlled effectively with the application rate of 1.12 than 0.56 kg/ha. Most effective control of huisache was obtained June 18, 1970, although other summer treatments in 1970 were effective. The herbicide was, on the average, more effective on huisache and Macartney rose when applied in the evening than morning or midday. Macartney rose was most effectively controlled by treatments applied in September and October of both years. Poorest control of the two species occurred when internal water stress was highest.

Granular 4-amino-3,5,6-trichloropicolinic acid (picloram) was effective in controlling live oak (Quercus virginiana (Mill.), huisache) (Acacia farnesiana (L.), Willd.), and yaupon (Ilex vomitoria Ait.), but not honey mesquite (Prosopis juliflora (Swartz) DC. var. glandulosa (Torr.) Cockerell) in south Texas. Granular 5-bromo-3-sec-butyl-6-methyluracil (bromacil) controlled live oak and huisache. Herbicides applied to soil were usually most effective in spring and fall during periods of active brush growth. Picloram granules applied in May to a mixed stand of woody plants in Puerto Rico usually were effective. However, rates up to 30 lb/A were ineffective on some species.

The influence of relative planting date on the growth of common cocklebur (Xanthium pensylvanicum Wallr. ♯ XANST), common ragweed (Ambrosia artemesiifolia L. ♯ AMBEL), sicklepod (Cassia obtusifolia L. ♯ CASOB), and redroot pigweed (Amaranthus retroflexus L. ♯ AMARE) grown in competition with soybean [Glycine max (L.) Merr. ‘Bragg’] was studied in the greenhouse. Increases in dry matter and height were slower for the five weed species than for soybean throughout the period of the study. The root: shoot ratio of soybean was the highest of any plant in the study, while common ragweed, common cocklebur, common lambsquarters, and sicklepod were intermediate, and redroot pigweed was the lowest. Soybean dry weight was always reduced when grown in competition with a weed. Soybean dry-matter production was reduced most when weeds were planted 2 weeks before soybean, especially with common cocklebur and common lambsquarters. Weed dry-matter content was severely reduced when the weed seed were planted simultaneously with or following soybean. Soybean height was usually reduced by competition with the weeds. The height of common ragweed was increased, however, when planted simultaneously with soybean. Common lambsquarters, redroot pigweed, and common ragweed heights were increased when planted 2 weeks prior to soybean.

An assessment was made of various parameters to measure growth of soybean [Glycine max (L.) Merr. ‘Wilkin’] and einkorn (Triticum monococcum L.) cell suspension cultures to establish convenient methods of screening the effects of chemicals. Methods assessed were settled cell volumes, packed cell volumes, absorbance at 525 nm of sonicated aliquots, dry weights (of aliquots or entire flask contents), and electrical conductivity and pH of the culture medium. Settled cell volumes, conductivity, and dry-weight changes were the most useful of the methods tested for determining the phytotoxicity of a nonionic linear alcohol ethylene oxide detergent (an adduct of 1-dodecanol containing eight ethylene oxide units) and the methyl ester of diclofop {2-[4-(2,4-dichlorophenoxy)phenoxy] propanoic acid}. Because 3 to 4 weeks were required to assess whether the cultures could grow out of the initial inhibition by the detergent or herbicide, none of the methods was rapid. Advantages and disadvantages of the various methods and their relative values for screening compounds are described.

Early weed and crop interference was examined in a greenhouse pot experiment combining aspects of additive, substitutive, and diallel designs. Cotton (Gossypium hirsutum L. 'Stoneville 213′) and four weeds {purple nutsedge (Cyperus rotundus L.), large crabgrass [Digitaria sanguinalis (L.) Scop.], velvetleaf (Abutilon theophrasti Medic.) and prickly sida (Sida spinosa L.)} were grown singly and in all possible combinations of pairs including reciprocals for 5 weeks in 10-cm plastic pots. After 5 weeks large crabgrass was the tallest species in all combinations except when grown with purple nutsedge. Purple nutsedge, however, had more leaf area and greater dry weight than all other species. Height, leaf area, and dry weight were lowest in prickly sida. Mean relative yields in mixtures (a measure of competitive ability) were 1.90, 1.15, 1.13, 0.86, and 0.41 for purple nutsedge, large crabgrass, cotton, velvetleaf, and prickly sida, respectively, when grown with the other four species as associates. Conversely, purple nutsedge and cotton as associates depressed mean relative yields of competing species to 0.59 and 0.94. Large crabgrass, velvetleaf, and prickly sida as associates increased mean relative yields of competing species to 1.17, 1.18, and 1.55, respectively. Analysis of these data and replacement-series diagrams indicated that purple nutsedge was the most competitive, prickly sida the least, and the other species were intermediate and approximately equivalent in competitive ability.

The distribution pattern of s-triazine-resistant biotypes of common lambsquarters (Chenopodium album L. #3 CHEAL) and smooth pigweed (Amaranthus hybridus L. # AMACH) in Virginia was determined. Seeds were collected from suspected triazine-resistant biotypes of both species. Triazine resistance was confirmed by measuring chlorophyll fluorescence in the presence of atrazine [6-chloro-N-ethyl-N′-(1-methylethyl)-1,3,5-triazine-2,4-diamine]. Greenhouse bioassay with whole-plant material and a sinking leaf disc assay were also performed as further confirmation of triazine resistance. Triazine-resistant smooth pigweed was confirmed in 19 counties and common lambsquarters in eight counties in Virginia. Triazine-resistant smooth pigweed and common lambsquarters were located mostly in the northern and southwestern highlands of the state where there has been a long history of triazine use in no-till corn (Zea mays L.) production. S-triazine-resistant biotypes were also cross-resistant to other representative s-triazine and as-triazine herbicides but susceptible to the substituted urea herbicide diuron [N′-(3,4-dichlorophenyl)-N,N-dimethylurea].
