Grains of wild oats (Avena fatua L.) may remain dormant in the soil for several years or even for decades. The reasons for this dormancy are not known, but various hypotheses have been advanced to explain it, such as that the hull acts as a barrier to oxygen (1,7), and that a toxic substance is present in the hull as in cultivated oats (5). The tests here reported were undertaken to further explore some aspects of the problem of dormancy in wild oats.

A wild population of a plant species, especially a cross-pollinated species, can display considerable genetic variation. Genetic variability is evident in differential susceptibility to an herbicide because the population can show continuous phenotypic variation. Recent, recurrent selection studies have revealed that phenotypic variation in response to low herbicide rates is heritable and can result in rapid evolution of herbicide resistance in genetically variable cross-pollinated rigid ryegrass. In this study, the heritable genetic variation in an herbicide-susceptible rigid ryegrass population was exploited to shift the population toward greater herbicide susceptibility by recurrent selection. To enhance herbicide susceptibility, herbicide-susceptible rigid ryegrass plants were divided into two identical clones, and one series of cloned plants was treated with a low rate of herbicide (diclofop). The nontreated clones of individuals that did not survive the herbicide treatment were selected and bulk-crossed to obtain the susceptible progeny. After two cycles of selection, the overall susceptibility to diclofop was doubled. The results indicate that minor genes for resistance are present in an herbicide-susceptible rigid ryegrass population, and their exclusion can increase susceptibility to diclofop.

Junglerice is one of the world's most problematic C4 grass weeds present in dry-seeded rice in many countries. A screenhouse study was conducted to determine the effect of four rice planting densities (0, 100, 200, and 400 plants m−2) and four nitrogen (N) rates (0, 50, 100, and 150 kg ha−1) on the growth and morphological plasticity of junglerice. Junglerice plant height was reduced by 15 to 35%, tiller number by 54 to 77%, leaf number by 61 to 85%, leaf area by 69 to 90%, leaf biomass by 63 to 88%, stem biomass by 70 to 92%, and inflorescence biomass by 66 to 94% at rice planting densities ranging from 100 to 400 plants m−2 relative to the junglerice plants grown alone. However, all these growth parameters increased with increasing N rates. Junglerice biomass increased by 125 to 472%, whereas rice biomass increased by 122 to 285% with the application of 50 to 150 kg N ha−1. Additional N favored junglerice biomass production relative to rice. Rice crop interference (200 to 400 plants m−2) reduced junglerice growth and biomass and overshaded the junglerice plants when no N was applied. Increasing N application resulted in taller plants and higher biomass of junglerice, while it reduced root-shoot weight ratio. These results suggest that increasing N rate increased the competitive ability of the junglerice over rice regardless of crop planting density. Information generated in this study could be useful in devising appropriate combinations of planting density and fertilizer management strategies for cultural junglerice management, particularly in situations where junglerice species are more responsive than rice to N.

Giant foxtail (Setaria faberii Herrm.) was grown from seed in controlled climate rooms at temperatures of 50, 60, 70, and 80 F and photoperiods of 8, 12, 16, and 20 hours. An inherently poor primary root system resulted in slow and uniform growth during the first few weeks under all environmental conditions. Giant foxtail produced the most dry matter at the highest temperatures and longest photoperiods. No photoperiod inhibited flowering but photoperiod produced differences in development of inflorescences. Within any temperature, the longer the photoperiod the greater the size of panicle and number of seeds produced. Seed viability was high at 80 and 70 F, low at 60 F and zero at 50 F within all photoperiods.

Early spring or late fall treatments of 2,6-dichlorobenzonitrile (dichlobenil) were effective for the control of several annual and perennial sedges, grasses, and broadleaf weeds in cranberry bogs. Isopropyl N-(3-chlorophenyl) carbamate (CIPC) 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid 2,4-D and 2-chloro-4,6-bis (ethylamino)-s-triazine (simazine) as spring applications were less effective than dichlobenil for the wide spectrum of weeds encountered. Single spring applications of as much as 4 lb/A of dichlobenil, 6 lb/A of 2,4-D, 24 lb/A of CIPC, and 2 lb/A of simazine were tolerated by the cranberry vines. Dichlobenil at 4 and 6 lb/A caused reductions in upright growth and fruit size. Keeping quality of mature fruit was not adversely affected by herbicidal rates of any of the materials.

Spring and fall applications of 10 soil sterilant herbicides were investigated for control of brush and herbaceous vegetation at five locations in Texas. A majority of the herbicides controlled most brush species. However, 5-bromo-3-sec-butyl-6-methyluracil (bromacil), 2-methoxy-4,6-bis(isopropylamino)-5-triazine (prometone), and 4-amino-3,5,6-trichloropicolinic acid (picloram) were most effective at all locations. A mixture of disodium tetraborates, 3-(p-chlorophenyl)-1,1-dimethylurea (monuron) and trichlorobenzoic acid was very effective for at least 20 months at four of the five locations. Most herbicides controlled herbaceous vegetation for 1 year or less. Bromacil controlled herbaceous vegetation for approximately 2 years at most locations.

Horseweed has rapidly become a major weed in soybean and cotton production fields of the United States, and Indiana farmers ranked horseweed as one of the five worst weeds in their fields during a mail survey in 2003. Glyphosate resistance in horseweed is conferred by a single, incompletely dominant gene. Horseweed populations possess a high level of variability in their response to glyphosate. Horseweed has also evolved resistance to acetolactate synthase (ALS) inhibitors, and biotypes resistant to ALS-inhibiting herbicides and glyphosate are in many of the same areas. An experiment was designed to determine whether glyphosate resistance can be transferred by pollen. We found glyphosate-resistant plants in 1.1 to 3.8% of the progeny. Segregation ratios fit the expected 3 : 1 resistant : sensitive ratios confirming that glyphosate resistance in horseweed can transfer to closely located glyphosate-susceptible biotypes under open-pollinated conditions at low frequencies. The hypothesis of a follow-up experiment was that first-generation progeny of parent plants, selected on a continuum of low to high phenotypic response to glyphosate, will inherit respective low to high phenotypic responses to glyphosate. The variability in field-collected populations (low-level to high-level glyphosate resistance) ranged from 2 to 14 times the commonly recommended field use rate of glyphosate. However, low- and high-levels of glyphosate resistance were not observed in first-generation progeny. We conclude that differential glyphosate responses observed among parental populations was due to different frequencies of the resistance allele within the populations, rather than the presence of different resistance alleles.

Common lambsquarters tolerance to glyphosate is problematic because of the species' widespread distribution, competitive ability with many crop species, the widespread use of glyphosate in agriculture, and the weed's potential to develop decreased sensitivity to multiple herbicide sites of action. The mechanism that confers common lambsquarters tolerance to glyphosate is not known. Therefore, we conducted experiments to determine the mechanism of tolerance to glyphosate in an accession of common lambsquarters from Indiana relative to a sensitive accession from Wisconsin. The ED50 (the effective dose that reduced shoot mass 50% relative to nontreated plants) value for the tolerant accession (1.6 kg ae ha−1 ± 0.4 standard error of the mean [SEM]) was eightfold greater than the ED50 for the sensitive accession (0.2 kg ae ha−1 ± 0.2 SEM) 28 d after treatment. The glyphosate target-site (EPSPS) DNA sequence at proline 106, shikimate accumulation as an estimate of EPSPS sensitivity, and EPSPS protein abundance did not differ between accessions. Absorption of 14C-glyphosate was slightly greater in the tolerant accession than it was in the sensitive accession at 48 and 72 h after treatment (HAT). However, the tolerant accession translocated a smaller percentage of absorbed 14C-glyphosate to the tissue above the treated leaf, which included the shoot apical meristem, at 24, 48, and 72 HAT (P ≤ 0.05, 0.01, and 0.10, respectively). These results suggest an important role of reduced translocation in conferring tolerance of common lambsquarters to glyphosate.

Laboratory studies were conducted to determine the effect of rainfall timing and antecedent moisture on atrazine leaching through intact soil cores taken from no-till and conventional-till corn fields. Simulated rainfall was applied to no-till and conventional-till cores 1 to 14 d after atrazine application and, in a second study, one d after atrazine was applied to no-till and conventional-till cores at 1 to 800 kPa soil moisture. Increasing the lag time between atrazine application and rainfall from one to 14 d reduced the amount of atrazine leached by about 50% for both no-till and conventional-till soil cores. During the same time period, the amount of atrazine adsorbed to soil increased by about 30% for both tillages. Soil dryness (antecedent moisture) at the time of atrazine application had no effect on the amount of atrazine leached through conventional-till cores. However, leaching decreased in no-till cores as antecedent moisture decreased from 1 to 33 kPa; drying to 800 kPa had no further effect. The leaching rate of atrazine was much higher for the initial 0.5 pore volume than for the next 1.5 pore volume at all rainfall timing and antecedent moisture levels. This behavior is indicative of preferential transport.

Field experiments were conducted in 1997 and in 1998 to determine the effects of density and time of emergence on Eriochloa villosa growth and seed production in Zea mays. E. villosa was transplanted at four densities (3, 9, 27, and 81 plants m−2) to simulate emergence at four Z. mays growth stages (VE, V2, V5, and V10). Compared to E. villosa plants that emerged with Z. mays plants, total above-ground E. villosa biomass at maturity of plants grown at 3 plants m−2 was reduced by 54, 97, and 99% when emergence was delayed until the V2, V5, and V10 stages of Z. mays, respectively, in 1997. In 1998, total aboveground E. villosa biomass at maturity was reduced by 70, 87, and 99% when emergence was delayed until the V2, V5, and V10 stages of Z. mays, respectively. E. villosa aboveground vegetative biomass per plant at maturity was linearly related to seed production per plant in each year. E. villosa seed production m−2 decreased nonlinearly as density decreased and time of emergence was delayed. Based on estimated model parameters, maximum seed production was 57,100 and 12,700 seeds m−2 in 1997 and 1998, respectively. Within time of emergence, E. villosa density did not affect seed mass per seed, however, seed mass of late-emerging cohorts was less than that of early-emerging cohorts. Time of weed emergence relative to the crop was a very important factor in determining biomass and seed production. Results suggest that late-emerging plants may not be very important to long-term management of E. villosa.

In a 3-year study propanil (3′,4′-dichloropropionanilide) at 6.7 or 9.0 kg/ha was applied postemergence as single or split applications to rice (Oryza sativa L. ‘Starbonnet’ and ‘Nova 66′) 15 to 75 days after crop emergence. The effect on crop injury, maturity, grain yield, and seed and milling quality was measured on rice grown in weed-free plots. Residues of DCA (3,4-dichloroaniline) in grain and straw from treated rice plants and of propanil and TCAB (3,3′,4,4′-tetrachloroazobenzene) in treated soil were determined. Propanil applied at all times and rates in 1968 and 1970 or applied at all rates at 15 to 55 days after crop emergence in 1969 did not reduce grain yields, but 6.7 kg/ha applied 65 and 75 days after crop emergence in 1969 injured rice plants vegetatively and reduced grain yields. Plant maturity, seed viability and milling quality of grain were not affected. Residues of DCA in grain and straw were highest from treatments applied 65 and 75 days after crop emergence; rice straw contained more DCA than did grain.

Harvest weed seed control (HWSC) may control problematic weeds by decreasing contributions to the weed seedbank. However, HWSC practices will not be effective if plants have shed a great part of their seeds before harvest or if a low proportion of seed production is retained at a height that enables collection during harvest. The seed-shattering pattern of several weed species was evaluated over three growing seasons to determine their potential to be controlled with HWSC in the Pacific Northwest (PNW). The studied weed species were downy brome (Bromus tectorum L.), feral rye (Secale cereale L.), Italian ryegrass [Lolium perenne L. ssp. multiflorum (Lam.) Husnot], and rattail fescue [Vulpia myuros (L.) C.C. Gmel.]. Seed retention at harvest, seed production, and plant height differed among species, locations, and years. Environmental conditions influenced seed-shattering patterns, particularly the time plants started to shatter seeds and the rate of the shattering. Agronomic factors such as herbicide use, interrow space, or crop height/vigor also seemed to affect shattering patterns and seed production, but more specific studies must be conducted to determine their individual effects. Bromus tectorum, L. perenne ssp. multiflorum, and V. myuros had an average seed retention at harvest of less than 50%. In addition, the low seed retention height of V. myuros makes this species a poor candidate for HWSC. Secale cereale had average seed retention at harvest greater than 50%, and seed retention height was greater than 30 cm. The variability of seed retention in different species will make the efficacy of HWSC practices species and environment dependent in PNW winter wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) cropping systems. Harvesting the wheat crop as early as possible will be crucial to the success of HWSC.

Phytotoxicity of chlorsulfuron {2-chloro-N-[[(4-methoxy-6-methyl-1,3,5-triazin-2-yl)amino] carbonyl] benzenesulfonamide} in cell cultures of Canada thistle [Cirsium arvense (L.) Scop. # CIRAR] was approximately 30-fold greater than in leafy spurge (Euphorbia esula L. # EPHES) cultures. Differences in chlorsulfuron phytotoxicity in these two species were attributed to large differences in cellular metabolism of the herbicide. Leafy spurge cells metabolized all of the applied 14C-chlorsulfuron within 72 h of treatment, while Canada thistle metabolized less than 2%. Acid hydrolysis of the metabolic products isolated from leaf disks and cell cultures of leafy spurge yielded a radioactive product that cochromatographed with a 2-chlorobenzenesulfonamide standard. Therefore, metabolic transformation occurred on the heterocyclic portion of the molecule. A major metabolite was further characterized as 2-chloro-N-[[4-(hydroxymethyl)-6-methoxy-1,3,5-triazin-2-yl]aminocarbonyl]-benzenesulfonamide by cochromatography with the authentic standard.

Correlations between herbicide damage and several physiological factors were examined in the field for ponderosa pine (Pinus ponderosa Dougl. ex P&C Lawson) and greenleaf manzanita (Arctostaphylos patula Greene). Pine injury caused by 2,4-D [(2,4-dichlorophenoxy) acetic acid], glyphosate [N-(phosphonomethyl) glycine], or triclopyr {[(3,5,6-trichloro-2-pyridinyl)oxy] acetic acid]} was compared to leader growth rate, needle growth rate, predawn xylem potential, daytime xylem potential, and photo synthetic rate occurring on the dates of herbicide application. Shrub injury for each of the three herbicides was compared to predawn xylem potential, daytime xylem potential, and photo synthetic rates. Both species exhibited less injury from herbicide applications made at the end of September than from any applications made from April through October. Comparison of factors highly correlated to herbicide damage indicates that highest herbicide selectivity occurs when pine has ceased growing, the xylem potential of the pine is relatively low (high water stress), and the xylem potential of the manzanita is relatively high.

A 2-yr field study was conducted to determine whether the addition of wetting agents to diclofop {2-[4-(2,4-dichlorophenoxy) phenoxy] propanoic acid} could enhance its postemergence control of grass weeds without altering its crop tolerance. In each year, 12 species were treated at two stages of growth with at least two concentrations of diclofop. Regardless of the treatment, selectivity was not altered on wheat (Triticum aestivum L.), soybeans [Glycine max (L.) Merr.], cucumber (Cucumis sativus L.), or sorghum [Sorghum bicolor (L.) Moench]. The addition of wetting agent to diclofop was of no value on highly susceptible grass weed species such as barnyardgrass [Echinochloa crus-galli (L.) Beauv.] or on the more resistant species such as large crabgrass [Digitaria sanguinalis (L.) Scop.]. Only on an intermediately susceptible species such as giant foxtail (Setaria faberi Herrm.) could any significant differences in control be attributed to a wetting agent. The stage of growth of the grass weed species at time of treatment and the diclofop concentration were more important than the presence of a nonionic wetting agent.

Greenhouse and field experiments were conducted with a roller applicator at Lincoln, Nebraska, during 1979 and 1980. Glyphosate [N-(phosphonomethyl)glycine] concentrations of 5, 10, and 20% and carpet saturations of 50 and 75% controlled shattercane [Sorghum bicolor (L.) Moench] when applied to the top 30 cm of the plant in greenhouse research. In the field, glyphosate concentrations of 5 to 20% with a carpet saturation of 50% controlled shattercane acceptably in soybeans [Glycine max (L.) Merr.], but a concentration of 2.5% with 25% carpet saturation did not. Weed control was comparable whether speed of application was 3.2, 6.4, or 9.6 km/h. Shattercane control in grain sorghum [Sorghum bicolor (L.) Moench.] was excellent at glyphosate concentrations of 5, 10, and 20% and at carpet saturations of 50 and 75%, and sorghum injury was minimal at 25 and 50% carpet saturations. The roller applicator was compared to a ropewick applicator for shattercane control in sorghum. Excellent weed control (90% or greater) with minimal crop injury was obtained with the roller applicator at glyphosate concentrations of 10 and 20% at application speeds of 3.2 and 6.4 km/h and with the ropewick applicator with glyphosate concentrations of 35 and 50% applied at 3.2, 6.4, and 9.6 km/h.

Clods of three sizes (1.5-, 3.3-, and 5.3-cm diameter) and two hardnesses [soft (0.3 MPa) and hard (2.2 MPa)] were made by incorporating seed from one of the five following weed species: corn poppy (Papaver rhoeas L. # PAPRH), shepherdspurse [Capsella bursa-pastoris (L.) Medic. # CAPBP], smooth crabgrass Digitaria ischaemum (Schreb.) Muehlenb. # DIGIS], common lambsquarters (Chenopodium album L. # CHEAL), and Canada thistle [Cirsium arvense (L.) Scop. # CIRAR], listed by increasing seed size. Under conditions of this experiment, higher germination occurred with larger seed. The higher germination was connected with fewer dormant seed remaining in the clods. Germination significantly decreased (13%) in the larger soft and hard clods with the smaller seed sizes (less germination associated with more dormant seed remaining in the clod). Germination of the two larger seed decreased (23%) only in the larger soft clods but was less significant with both small seed. Non-emerged seedlings increased with larger clods and was most significant with the three large seed in the hard clods and absent with the three large seed in the soft ones. On the average, 70% of the germinated seed emerged. Differences in germination as well as in nonemerged seedlings caused decreased emergence on larger clods. Clod influence in germination and emergence was explained by the volumes of the clod layers involved, and in some comparable aspects corresponded with volumes (depths) of soil layers.

Bioassay techniques were evaluated for the determination of chlorsulfuron {2-chloro-N-[[(4-methoxy-6-methyl-1,3,5-triazin-2-yl)amino] carbonyl] benzenesulfonamide} residues in soil and water. A linear response of corn (Zea mays L.) primary root length to chlorsulfuron concentrations (InX+1) of 0.0 to 16.0 μg/L was observed in the water bioassay. Several soil extraction bioassay methods were attempted and found to be highly variable. A Ca(OH)2 soil extraction bioassay technique produced a linear response of primary corn root length to chlorsulfuron concentrations ranging from 0.0 to 64.0 μg/kg. The efficiency of the Ca(OH)2 extraction bioassay was determined by the use of 14C-chlorsulfuron. Recovery efficiency at 1.0 μg/kg was 74% and averaged 62% at all higher chlorsulfuron concentrations.

Tomatoes (Lycopersicon esculentum ‘Roma VF’) and weeds were seeded at two locations in 1973 and 1974. In separate plots, jimsonweed (Datura stramonium L.), tall morningglory [Ipomoea purpurea (L.) Roth.], and common cocklebur (Xanthium pensylvanicum Wallr.) seedlings were thinned to densities ranging from 2.7 to 86 plants/m2. Densities of large crabgrass [Digitaria sanguinalis (L.) Scop.] ranged from 11 to 430 plants/m2. There were a few instances of difference in nutrient concentrations in tomato and weed leaf tissue, but no clear relationship was evident between concentration of N, P, K, Ca, Mg, and S and weed density. Considerably more fruit weight was produced per kilogram of total assimilated N, P, and K in the weed-free than in the weed-infested tomato plots.

In the range of 4.4 to 49 C, there is an exponential relationship between temperature and trifluralin (α,α,α-trifluoro-2,6-dinitro-N,N-dipropyl-p-toluidine) diffusion coefficients. Diffusion is low in air-dry soil for all temperatures. It increases to a maximum value when the soil has between 8 and 15% w/w soil moisture content and then decreases steadily as moisture content increases. When the air-filled fraction of soil void space is reduced below approximately 40% v/v by either compression or addition of moisture, diffusion begins to decrease. An equation was developed to predict trifluralin diffusion coefficients from a factorial experiment with seven soil moisture contents, five soil temperatures, and two bulk densities. Diffusion coefficients range from 3.8 X 10-11 cm2/sec to 2.8 X 10-6 cm2/sec. Fifteen terms are required in the prediction model to describe accurately the response surface of trifluralin diffusion coefficients. With the equation it is possible to predict trifluralin diffusion coefficients for any combination of measured soil parameters as long as they are represented by the range of the variables used in the experiment.
