A weed survey system methodology was developed and used annually for 4 yr in the province of Saskatchewan. Based on a stratified random sampling procedure, fields were selected in wheat (Triticum aestivum L.), barley (Hordeum vulgare L.), oat (Avena sativa L.), rye (Secale cereale L.), rape (Brassica napus L., Brassica campestris L.), and flax (Linum usitatissimum L.) crops. The boundaries of the 43 agricultural extension districts in the province formed the strata. The provincial agricultural extension service provided staff to conduct the survey. Computer processing of the data enabled reports, containing summary tables and distribution maps, to be distributed to extension, research, and industry personnel within 3 months after completion of the field survey. The field surveys were conducted late in the growing season before harvest commenced; hence, the weed populations consisted of species that had been present during the early part of the growing season and may have contributed to yield losses. During the 4 yr of the survey, weeds were counted in 4423 fields. Of the 164 species recorded, 97 species occurred in more than three fields. Only 29 species were encountered frequently in the fields. Green foxtail [Setaria viridis (L.) Beauv. # SETVI), wild buckwheat (Polygonum convolvulus L. # POLCO), and wild oat (Avena fatua L. # AVEFA) were the top three species based on a ranking system using a measure called relative abundance.

Effects of soil pH on growth, competitive ability, and leaf nutrient content of corn (Zea mays L.), Powell amaranth (Amaranthus powellii S. Wats. ♯ AMAPO), velvetleaf (Abutilon theophrasti Medic. ♯ ABUTH), and green foxtail [Setaria viridis (L.) Beauv. ♯ SETVI] were measured in the field. Corn yields were significantly reduced by weed competition at all pH levels, but leaf nutrient content, as a percentage of dry weight, was not affected. Aboveground dry weights of Powell amaranth and velvetleaf were significantly lower at pH 4.8 than at pH 6.0 or 7.3, whereas growth of green foxtail was greater at pH 4.8 than at pH 7.3. Weed competitive ability, as evidenced by reductions in dry weight, varied with soil pH and companion plant. Powell amaranth and velvetleaf had higher levels of S, Zn, and especially Mn, at pH 4.8 than at pH 7.3. N and K in the leaf tissue were greater in the weed species than in corn at all soil pH levels. The dicot species had higher percentages of Ca and Mg in leaf tissue at all soil pH levels and accumulated higher percentages of Mn at low pH than the monocot species.

Modeling is increasingly being used as a tool for the evaluation of the environmental fate of pesticides. Sorption, leaching, degradation, and volatilization are some of the processes being integrated through the use of simulation modeling techniques. Several research programs are focusing their attention on such issues (16, 17, 18, 32, 35), with regulatory agencies involved in management of pesticides also taking a modeling approach (3, 7). Because of the extreme complexity of agroecosystems, it is obvious that the use of simulation models will continue to be the most expeditious, reliable, and cost-effective means of integrating the various processes acting upon a pesticide to determine its fate. For example, modeling will help to summarize and interpret efficacy trials and will provide the vehicle for transferring experimental results to unstudied situations, such as the potential environmental fate of an applied herbicide. However, proper development, testing, and responsible use of a modeling approach must be based upon a thorough, comprehensive understanding of interdependent and dynamic natural processes.

The seed composition in the upper 15-cm soil horizon was determined and correlated with weed seedlings growing with fieldbeans (Phaseolus vulgaris L. ‘Valley’). The total seed reservoir averaged 250 seed/kg of soil, and 19 species were represented. Seed occurring with the most frequency were redroot pigweed (Amaranthus retroflexus L. ♯ AMARE), common lambsquarters (Chenopodium album L. ♯ CHEAL), and common purslane (Portulaca oleracea L. ♯ POROL). Seed from these plants accounted for over 85% of the seed found. The number of barnyardgrass [Echinochloa crus-galli (L.) Beauv. ♯ECHCG], buffalobur (Solanum rostratum Dunal ♯ SOLCU), common lambsquarters, common purslane, and common sunflower (Helianthus annuus L. ♯ HELAN) seed in the soil was correlated with the number of plants growing in the field with fieldbeans. A correlation occurred between redroot pigweed, yellow foxtail [Setaria lutescens (Weigel.) Hubb. ♯ SETLU], and barnyardgrass growing in corn (Zea mays L.) fields in the fall of the year and plants growing in the field with fieldbeans the following year.

The influence of water stress on johnsongrass [Sorghum halepense (L.) Pers. ♯ SORHA] physiology was evaluated in a semiarid environment. Stomatal conductance of johnsongrass responded to more negative leaf water potential and increasing leaf temperature. The sensitivity of the leaf temperature effect was dependent on the soil water content. At low soil water content, conductance was limited by low water potential, and increasing leaf temperature had little effect. Conductance of CO2 was related to net photosynthesis in a curvilinear manner, with conductance levels greater than 0.3 mol·m-2· s-1 being in excess of that necessary for maximum photosynthesis. At both high conductance levels and low levels associated with increased water stress, intercellular CO2 concentration increased, indicating nonstomatal limitations to photosynthesis. Decreased osmotic potential provided the highest correlation with the linear decline of photosynthetic rate as stress intensified. The expression of osmotic adjustment in johnsongrass is reported during grain filling. Plants in the milkdough stage of grain filling had approximately 0.3 MPa lower osmotic potential at any relative water content than those at anthesis.

Certain oximes, including cyometrinil [(Z)-α-(cyanomethoxy)iminobenzeneacetonitrile], CGA-92194 [N-(1,3-dioxolan-2-yl-methoxy)-iminobenzeneacetonitrile], 2-pyridinealdoxime-O-benzyl ether (PA-B), and 2-pyridinealdoxime-O-phenethyl ether (PA-PE), which are known to protect sorghum from chloroacetanilide herbicides, increased the toxicity of the insecticide propoxur (o-isopropoxyphenyl-methyl carbamate) to a resistant strain of housefly (Musca domestica L.). Flurazole [5-thiazolecarboxylic acid, benzyl ester, 2-chloro-4-(trifluoromethyl)], a nonoxime protectant for grain sorghum, had less effect on the toxicity of propoxur than did the oximes. Metolachlor [2-chloro-N-(2-ethyl-6-methylphenyl)-N-(2-methoxy-1-methylethyl)acetamide], which can be used as a herbicide in sorghum [Sorghum bicolor (L.) Moench.] only if the seed have been treated with a protectant, also increased the toxicity of propoxur to houseflies. Commercially available insecticide synergists increase insecticide activity by inhibiting NADPH-dependent microsomal mixed-function oxidase activity. Sorghum coleoptiles possessed the enzyme system necessary to oxidize aldrin (1,2,3,4,10,10-hexachloro-1,4,4a,5,8,8a-hexahydro-1,4-endo-exo-5,8-dimethanonaphthalene) to dieldrin (1,2,3,4,10,10-hexachloro-6, 7-epoxy-1,4,4a,5,6,7,8,8a-octahydro-1,4-endo-exo-5,8-dimethanonaphthalene), which is a standard test for oxidative metabolism in insects. Under the conditions of these tests, the aldrin epoxidase activity in sorghum coleoptiles was not affected by pretreatment with cyometrinil or flurazole.

Pot experiments were conducted in the field at Stuttgart, AR, during 1982 and 1983 to evaluate growth and morphological differences between strawhull and blackhull red rice (Oryza sativa L. ♯ ORYSA) biotypes collected from Arkansas, Louisiana, and Texas. All red rice biotypes were compared with rice (Oryza sativa L.) cultivars ‘Lebonnet’ and ‘Nortai’. Growth and morphological differences were greatest between cultivars and red rice biotypes, less between blackhull and strawhull types, and least among collections within blackhull or strawhull. Cultivars emerged slower, were shorter, tillered less, produced less straw and fewer panicles/plant, had a lower leaf area index, and had less grain shattering than most of the red rice biotypes. Blackhull red rice biotypes tillered 27% more, produced 18% more straw, and had later maturity than strawhull. Blackhull red rice from Arkansas emerged earlier, tillered 6 to 38% more, and produced 8 to 38% more panicles per plant than other red rice biotypes, whereas blackhull red rice from Texas was 11 to 26% taller at maturity than other biotypes.

Brownspine pricklypear (Opuntia phaecantha Engelm. & Bigel.) was effectively controlled within 2 yr following application of a 1:1 mixture of 2,4,5-T [(2,4,5-trichlorophenoxy)acetic acid] and picloram (4-amino-3,5,6-trichloropicolinic acid) at a rate of 0.6 kg ae/ha. Brownspine pricklypear canopy cover and dry weight declined from approximately 23% and 3800 kg/ha to 8% and 1600 kg/ha, respectively. No significant difference in total herbaceous forage dry weight was found between plants growing inside brownspine pricklypear canopy areas and plants growing outside the canopy areas. Differences between areas in species composition were significant in that cool-season grasses dominated the canopy area of the brownspine pricklypear colonies while warm-season grasses dominated the area outside the canopy. Control of brownspine pricklypear will enhance livestock carrying capacity of rangeland in the Rolling Plains of Texas by increasing forage availability but not forage production.

Canada thistle [Cirsium arvense (L.) Scop. # CIRAR] root samples were collected at monthly intervals over a 2-yr period from two locations to determine seasonal fluctuations in the presence and growth potential of root buds. Root bud growth was highest during late fall and winter months following death of the aerial shoots. Root fragments incubated at a constant 15 C for 2 weeks in continuous light consistently had more buds than nonincubated roots, which indicated active bud differentiation during the incubation period. Incubated roots produced 3 to 9 cm of new shoot length/cm root length. There were no obvious seasonal patterns in the presence of root buds or their ability to elongate at different times of the year. Carbohydrate reserves were stored preferentially in roots rather than in developing root buds or the bases of shoots. These reserves ranged from as low as 3% of root fresh weight during spring months to as high as 26% in late fall months, although the levels did not increase consistently during summer months over the locations and years of this study.

The world distributions of yellow starthistle (Centaurea solstitialis L. ♯ CENSO) and Russian knapweed (Centaurea repens L. ♯ CENRE) are mapped based on information from world regional floras. A survey of weed specialists and herbaria was made in the United States, and the extent of the infestations and economic importance of these weeds was determined for the 48 contiguous states. Yellow starthistle currently occurs in 209 counties in 23 states and has apparently increased in abundance since 1970. Russian knapweed was reported in 412 counties in 21 states and does not seem to be spreading. Both of these weedy plant species are of greater economic importance in the western United States than in the east.

Much of the success of modern agriculture is due to pesticide technology. Because weeds pose the greatest threat to crop yields, the largest class of pesticides used today is herbicides. Herbicides include products whose active ingredients represent a wide range of chemical families; yet most constitute a minimal potential hazard to man and the environment. Criteria typically used to determine potential hazard are mammalian and piscine toxicity, persistence, and bioaccumulation. By evaluating these criteria and assigning numerical values it is possible to devise a ranking of pesticides such as that developed by Weber (51). This list identifies those pesticides most likely to have some undesirable activity, either before or after they are applied. All herbicides ranked well below organochlorine insecticides in hazard rating and most were less hazardous than the organophosphate and carbamate insecticides. However, any substance, when used improperly, has the potential to cause problems, and for this reason all chemicals should be handled with caution.

Mefluidide {N-[2,4-dimethyl-5-[[(trifluoromethyl) sulfonyl] amino] phenyl] acetamide} was evaluated for effects on corn [Zea mays (L.) ‘Pioneer 3535’] coleoptile elongation. Mefluidide at 10-8 M, 10-7 M, and 10-6 M stimulated elongation approximately equal to growth stimulations with 10-6 M indoleacetic acid (IAA). Polar transport of 14C-IAA from donor agar blocks through corn coleoptiles and into receiver agar blocks after 12 h was increased 246% by 10-4 M mefluidide and inhibited 82% by 10-3 M mefluidide. Mefluidide-related chemicals (10-4 M) lacking a trifluoromethyl-sulfonyl-amino chain at the 1-position of the phenyl ring did not alter 14C-IAA transport. IAA transport was increased 97% when the acetamide chain at the 5-position was absent and 255% when the methyl in the 4-position was absent, and it decreased 65% when the methyl at the 2-position was absent. Polar transport of 14C-IAA through soybean [Glycine max (L.) Merr. ‘Williams’] hypocotyls was not altered by 10-4 M mefluidide; however, 10-3 M mefluidide increased IAA transport 116%. After 6 h, corn coleoptiles metabolized 14% of the mefluidide absorbed and soybean metabolized 54% of the mefluidide absorbed from 14C-mefluidide solutions (10-6 M). Differences in the rate of metabolism of mefluidide in meristematic tissue of corn and soybean may explain differences in mefluidide effects on auxin transport in corn and soybean.

Field experiments were conducted to measure the grain yield of wheat (Triticum aestivum L. ‘ANZA’) at various wild oat (Avena fatua L. ♯ AVEFA) and wheat plant densities. Wheat yield declined as wild oat plant density increased. Wheat yield increased in wild oat-infested plots as wheat plant density increased. Regression models were developed to describe the combined effect of wheat and wild oat plant densities on wheat grain yield. Wheat yields were best described by a nonlinear regression model using the relative density of wild oat in the weed-crop stand as the dependent variable. Inclusion of crop stand as a competitive factor significantly improved the fit of all regression models tested. Wild oat were more competitive against wheat in these experiments than in experiments reported by others. Possible reasons for differences in observed competitiveness are discussed.

In laboratory experiments, the effects of the herbicides HOE-39866 [ammonium (3-amino-3-carboxypropyl)-methylphosphinate] and SC-0224 (trimethylsulfonium carboxymethylaminomethylphosphonate) on the incorporation of NaH14CO3, [14C]-leucine, [14C]-uracil, and [14C]-acetate into enzymatically isolated soybean [Glycine max (L.) Merr. ‘Essex’] cells were evaluated to assess the activity of these herbicides on CO2 fixation, protein, ribonucleic acid (RNA), and lipid syntheses. At low concentrations neither compound exhibited rapid or distinct inhibitions of any process as might be expected in the case of inhibition of a primary target site. Photosynthesis was the process least affected. At equimolar concentrations, protein and RNA syntheses were more sensitive to HOE-39866 than to SC-0224 while the reverse occurred in lipid synthesis. Protein synthesis appears to be a possible target site that may be involved in the herbicidal action of these two compounds.

The depth distribution of weed seed, their location in relation to soil aggregates, and the size distribution of soil aggregates were determined in fields that had been under continual conventional or reduced tillage for more than 12 years. Soil samples were taken at three depths in the spring and fall of 1982, and soil aggregates were classified into seven size classes by dry, rotary sieving. Subsamples were deflocculated and washed through sieves to recover weed seed. In the spring, 85% of all seed in the reduced-tillage and 28% of those in the conventional-tillage soil were in the 0- to 5-cm-depth layer. Conventional tillage incorporated weed seed uniformly into various soil aggregate classes, whereas with reduced tillage more seed accumulated in the unaggregated fraction of the soil. In the fall, weed seed distribution in relation to soil depth and among soil aggregate classes was similar for both tillage regimes.

The effect of FMC 57020 [2-(2-chlorophenyl) methyl-4,4-dimethyl-3-isoxalidinone] on chloroplast development was examined in the cotyledons of 5-day-old, etiolated pitted morningglory (Ipomoea lacunosa L. ♯ IPOLA) seedlings grown from seeds inbibed for 24 h in water or 0.5 mM FMC 57020. In etiolated tissues, protochlorophyllide content was unaffected by FMC 57020; however, the herbicide eliminated carotenoid accumulation. There was no effect of FMC 57020 on phytoene or phytofluene content, although norflurazon [4-chloro-5-(methylamino)-2-(3-trifluoromethyl) phenyl)-3(2H)-pyridazinone] increased phytoene content in these tissues. The Shibata shift was greatly retarded in FMC 57020-treated cotyledons, suggesting that phytol levels are also reduced by the herbicide. There were no ultrastructural effects on etioplasts; however, under low white light (150 μE·m-2·s-1 PAR), plastids of FMC 57020-treated seedlings did not develop into chloroplasts but rapidly developed ultrastructural symptoms of photobleaching. Starch was not mobilized in herbicide-treated plastids and sugar levels were higher in these plastids than in control plastids. Etiolated hypocotyl growth was inhibited by FMC 57020, whereas norflurazon had no effect upon it. Our results suggest that FMC 57020 blocks both diterpene and tetraterpene synthesis.

Field experiments conducted over a 2-yr period demonstrated that common bermudagrass [Cynodon dactylon (L.) Pers. # CYNDA] inhibited growth of newly planted peach (Prunus persica L. ‘Norman’) trees. Common bermudagrass densities of 100, 75, 50, and 25% ground cover reduced tree fresh weight by 86, 64, 43, and 19%, respectively, the first year (1978) and 87, 62, 44, and 28%, respectively, the second year (1979) after planting. Tree trunk diameter relative growth rate (RGR) was reduced by 75 and 100% common bermudagrass ground cover densities at all measurement dates only in 1978. Tree leaf N and K were reduced in both years by common bermudagrass; however, only at the 100% common bermudagrass density in 1978 was N at a deficient level. Leaf chlorophyll was reduced in trees grown in all densities of common bermudagrass only in 1978. Reduced tree growth cannot be explained entirely by competition for essential nutrients; thus an allelopathic effect of the bermudagrass on young peach roots is suspected.
