The success of the insect sterile technique (IST) in managing insect pests raised the hypothesis that a similar approach could be employed to control weed populations. Here, we investigated the feasibility of employing irradiated sterile pollen as a means to disrupt seed production in dioecious weeds, specifically focusing on Palmer amaranth (Amaranthus palmeri S. Watson). Our goal was to determine the optimal irradiation dose that strikes a balance between inducing sterility and preserving competitiveness, as excessive doses could result in pollen mortality, while low doses may retain fertility. Plants were grown in a greenhouse during the summer of 2020 and spring of 2021. Once they reached the flowering stage, male and female individuals were isolated. Mature pollen samples were collected and exposed to varying dosages (0, 100, 200, 300, 400, and 500 Gy) of gamma rays. These irradiated and non-irradiated pollen samples were used in pollen viability assessments and hand-pollination experiments. In the hand-pollination study conducted in 2020, we employed six pollination treatments using different irradiation doses. The results showed that 300 Gy was the most effective dose, resulting in a maximum reduction of 30% in seed set compared with open pollination when irradiated pollen had prior access to the stigma through artificial pollination before open pollination. In 2021, to simulate real field conditions, three additional treatments were introduced into the study, further confirming the effectiveness of the optimal 300 Gy dose. Our findings indicate that the sterile pollen technique (SPT) using irradiated pollen can be a valuable approach for reducing weed seed production. SPT also holds potential for broad-spectrum weed control by mixing sterile pollen from multiple weed species in a single application. Additionally, it could aid in managing herbicide-resistant weeds that have survived in-season control efforts. This research contributes to the development of novel and sustainable weed management strategies.

This study investigated replicating six generations of glasshouse-based flowering date selection in wild radish (Raphanus raphanistrum L.) using an adaptation of the population model SOMER (Spatial Orientated Modelling of Evolutionary Resistance). This individual-based model was chosen because it could be altered to contain varying numbers of genes, along with varying levels of environmental influence on the phenotype (namely the heritability). Accurate replication of six generations of genetic change that had occurred in a previous glasshouse-based selection was achieved, without intermediate adjustments. This study found that multiple copies of just two genes were required to reproduce the polygenic flowering time adaptations demonstrated in that previous research. The model included major effect type M1 genes, with linkage and crossing over, and minor effect type M2 genes undergoing independent assortment. Within the model, transmissibility (heritability of each gene type) was parameterized at 0.60 for the M1 genes and 0.45 for the M2 genes. The serviceable parameterization of the genetics of flowering in R. raphanistrum within a population model means that simulated examinations of the effects of external weed control on flowering time adaptations are now more feasible. An accurate and simplified Mendelian-based model replicating the adaptive shifts of flowering time that is controlled by a complex array of genes is useful in predicting life-cycle adaptations to evade weed control measures such as harvest weed seed control, which apply intense adaptive selections on traits that affect seed retention at harvest, including flowering time.

Weed resistance to herbicides has increased exponentially during the past 30 to 40 yr, consequently reducing the number of effective products available to control certain species and populations. Future efforts should target not only the discovery of new protein binding sites and the development of new molecules, but also the revival of old molecules with reduced efficacy due to widespread herbicide resistance. The addition of herbicide synergists that inhibit metabolic pathways or enhance intrinsic plant stress is a possible solution to ameliorate the negative effects caused by the lack of new herbicide chemistries. Glutathione S-transferase (GST) enzymes are involved with numerous herbicide detoxification reactions and plant stress responses. This review approaches the potential use of natural and synthetic GST inhibitors to enhance herbicidal activity or induce crop safety to provide effective, sustainable weed management strategies in the future.

Barnyardgrass [Echinochloa crus-galli (L.) P. Beauv.] is increasingly infesting imidazolinone-tolerant (IMI-T) rice (Oryza sativa L.) fields in China, and E. crus-galli imazamox resistance has become the major concern for weed management in IMI-T rice fields. In this study, the susceptible population JLGY-3 (S) and the suspected resistant population JHXY-2 (R) collected from IMI-T rice fields were used as research subjects. When treated with imazamox, the JHXY-2 (R) population showed a high level of herbicide resistance with a resistance index of 31.2. JHXY-2 (R) was cross-resistant to all five acetolactate synthase (ALS) inhibitors from different chemical families, but sensitive to herbicides inhibiting acetyl-CoA carboxylase. To understand the reason why JHXY-2 (R) was resistant to imazamox, we performed experiments to characterize potential target-site resistance (TSR) and non–target site resistance (NTSR) mechanisms. A Trp-574-Leu amino acid mutation in ALS and low imazamox ALS sensitivity were the main mechanisms underlying imazamox resistance in this JHXY-2 (R) population. There was no significant difference in ALS gene expression and ALS protein abundance between R and S populations. High-performance liquid chromatography–tandem mass spectrometry analysis showed enhanced metabolism of imazamox in JHXY-2 (R), which was in contrast to the results of pretreatment with a metabolic enzyme inhibitor. Treatments with cytochrome P450 monooxygenase/glutathione S-transferase (P450/GST) inhibitors did not alter the resistance level of JHXY-2 (R) against imazamox. Transcriptome sequencing showed that there was almost no significant difference in the expression of P450 and GST metabolic enzyme genes between R and S populations, and only GSTU1 showed a significant upregulation in the R population, further clarifying the NTSR mechanism of JHXY-2 (R). In conclusion, amino acid mutation and higher enzyme activity of ALS are the main causes of imazamox resistance in JHXY-2 (R). However, given the differences in imazamox residues in the leaves of E. crus-galli, there may still be undetectable NTSR mechanisms that are causing imazamox resistance in the R population.

Eurasian watermilfoil (Myriophyllum spicatum L.) is an invasive aquatic plant that can hybridize with the native northern watermilfoil (M. sibiricum Kom.). These milfoil hybrids (M. spicatum × M. sibiricum) are becoming more prevalent in many lakes where the invasive and the native milfoil co-occur. Hybrid plants are more vigorous than either parent with a faster growth rate and lower sensitivity to some herbicides. The aquatic herbicides endothall and 2,4-D provide two effective modes of action for management of the hybrids. For more than a decade, these two herbicides have been used in combination as an effective control option and a resistance management strategy. How this combination impacts herbicide movement and efficacy is unknown. Therefore, the objective of this research was to determine the activity of endothall and 2,4-D combined compared with activity applied alone. Absorption and translocation of endothall, 2,4-D, and the combination was determined in hybrid plants over a 96-h time course. Endothall accumulation was not impacted when these herbicides were applied in combination; however, 2,4-D accumulation increased by 80%, relative to when 2,4-D was applied alone. Endothall translocation from shoots to roots decreased by almost 50% when applied in combination with 2,4-D (alone = 16.7% ± 2.6%; combination = 9.2% ± 1.2%). Shoot-to-root translocation of 2,4-D also decreased when the two herbicides were applied in combination (24.8% ± 2.6% when applied alone to only 3.93% ± 0.4% when in the presence of endothall). This research demonstrates that combining herbicides can significantly impact herbicide activity in plants. Future research is needed to determine whether this reduced translocation negatively impacts operational effectiveness when these herbicides are applied in combination.

The resistance to fenoxaprop-P-ethyl, a herbicide that inhibits acetyl-CoA carboxylase (ACCase), has emerged in shortawn foxtail (Alopecurus aequalis Sobol.) since the 1990s, presenting a considerable challenge to wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) production in China. One of the primary mechanisms responsible for this high-level resistance is the presence of mutations at codons 1781, 2041, and 2078 in the ACCase gene. However, the conventional methods used to detect these mutations, such as polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and gene sequencing, are time-consuming and labor-intensive. To address this issue and enable the prompt and effective detection of these common ACCase mutations in A. aequalis, a loop-mediated isothermal amplification (LAMP) strategy was developed. The LAMP assay specifically targets the Ile-1781-Leu and Asp-2078-Gly mutations within the ACCase gene of A. aequalis. Through the optimization of primers, systems, and conditions, the LAMP assay enables rapid differentiation between wild-type individuals and mutants of A. aequalis carrying either of these two mutations. Including SYBR Green I dye in the final reaction mixtures enables detection of the target mutation through a noticeable color change that can be observed with the naked eye. It is noteworthy that the sensitivity of the LAMP assay was approximately 104-fold greater than that of conventional PCR methods. Additionally, a derived cleaved amplified polymorphic sequence (dCAPS) assay was established for each mutation to distinguish between homozygous and heterozygous mutants. Overall, the developed LAMP assay could efficiently detect the Ile-1781-Leu and Asp-2078-Gly mutations in the ACCase gene of A. aequalis, offering significant advantages for the monitoring and management of fenoxaprop-P-ethyl resistance.

Following the application of MCPA/MCPB at 1.7 kg ae ha−1 at a field site near Dresden, ON, Canada, poor control (<50% visible control) of green pigweed (Amaranthus powellii S. Watson) was observed. Amaranthus powellii is a common weed in Ontario crop production, and its evolution of resistance to synthetic auxin herbicides (SAHs) could pose a risk to crop yields. The suspected resistant A. powellii population (R) was used in dose–response and field experiments to determine resistance to SAHs. The objective of these studies was to determine whether this population of A. powellii is resistant to MCPA and cross-resistant to other SAHs. The GR50 (herbicide dose that causes a 50% reduction in plant aboveground biomass) values were determined by fitting plant dry weight data, obtained following application with seven SAHs, to a four-parameter log-logistic equation and were compared between the suspected-resistant (R) population and a known susceptible (S) population of A. powellii. The field trial was conducted in 2017, 2018, 2019, and 2021 in corn (Zea mays L.) and consisted of 11 postemergence SAH treatments. The GR50 values differed between the R and S populations following application with MCPA, aminocyclopyrachlor, dichlorprop-p, and mecoprop, resulting in resistance factors of 4.4, 3.0, 2.5, and 2.4, respectively. In the field study, dicamba and MCPA ester controlled A. powellii 84% and 30%, respectively, at 8 wk after treatment application (WAA). The control of Amaranthus powellii with all SAHs applied POST in corn was poor (<90% visible control) at 8 WAA. Both studies confirmed resistance to SAHs in this population of A. powellii, which will create limitations for farmers aiming to control this weed.

The presence of glyphosate-resistant smooth pigweed (Amaranthus hybridus L.) biotypes has increased in southern Brazil in recent years, presenting the triple amino acid substitution TAP-IVS in 5-enol-pyruvylshikimate-3-phosphate synthase (EPSPS) previously found in Argentina. Some of these biotypes have morphological characteristics of A. hybridus and redroot amaranth (Amaranthus retroflexus L.). The present study aimed to identify, through molecular markers, the herbicide-resistant species of Amaranthus from Brazil that have the TAP-IVS substitution and to analyze the occurrence of pollen-mediated gene flow (PMGF) as the source of the TAP-IVS substitution in these biotypes. Six biotypes were evaluated using internal transcribed spacer (ITS) sequences, of which two (AMACHY-S and CAMAQ-R) were molecularly classified as A. hybridus and four (AMACRET-S, AMACVI-S, ARRGR-R, and SAOJER-R) were unclassified. Interestingly, all the glyphosate-resistant biotypes (ARRGR-R, SAOJER-R, and CAMAQ-R) had the TAP-IVS substitution and an increase in EPSPS relative copy number; however, only CAMAQ-R was confirmed as A. hybridus. Although the biotypes ARRGR-R and SAOJER-R are closely related to A. hybridus and green pigweed (Amaranthus powellii S. Watson), their species identity could not be resolved. The biotype SAOJER-R also was resistant to acetolactate synthase (ALS)-inhibiting herbicides due to a tryptophan to leucine substitution at position 574 in ALS. The evaluation of 119,746 seedlings in an intraspecific hybridization study of A. hybridus indicated an outcrossing frequency of 0.09%. In contrast, an absence of interspecific hybridization (A. hybridus × unclassified biotype, AMACVI-S) was found after screening 111,429 offspring. Unclassified biotypes might be derived from one or more ancient hybridization events and subsequently evolved the triple mutation independently. Alternatively, such biotypes could have evolved from recent hybridization events, which occur at a frequency below the level of detection in our study.

Hedge cactus (Cereus uruguayanus R. Kiesling; syn.: Cereus hildmannianus K. Schum.) is a columnar cactus that was introduced to Australia as an ornamental plant and has since become invasive in subhumid regions of Queensland and New South Wales. Compared with its congener, queen of the night (Cereus jamacaru DC.), which is currently invasive in both eastern and southern Africa, information on seed biology of C. uruguayanus is lacking. Experiments were conducted to study the effects of alternating day/night temperature, salt stress, water stress, and burial depth on germination and seedling emergence of four seed accessions of C. uruguayanus. Seeds were also subjected to a controlled aging test (CAT) to obtain an estimate of potential persistence under field conditions. The optimum temperature regime for germination of all accessions was 30/20 C. Germination decreased with an increase in sodium chloride (NaCl) concentration, but germination of all accessions (range 26% to 81%) occurred at 160 mM NaCl, indicating very high salt tolerance. Seed germination gradually decreased with an increase in water stress, but germination in all accessions (range 19% to 47%) occurred at −0.8 MPa. Seed viability and dormancy status were unaffected by exposure to salt level (320 mM NaCl) and water (−1.6 MPa) stress under which germination did not occur. Germination responses to all three factors were generally similar to those documented for C. jamacaru. The emergence of C. uruguayanus decreased with an increase in seed burial depth. The highest emergence (43%) was recorded for surface-sown seeds, and emergence was reduced to 0 at a burial depth of 2 cm. CAT results for two seed accessions indicated that seeds of C. uruguayanus are likely to demonstrate extended (>3 yr) persistence under field conditions, a prediction that is supported by evidence that germination of its small (2-mm) seeds is markedly reduced by burial.

Harvest weed seed control (HWSC) is an effective technique for managing wild radish (Raphanus raphanistrum L.), a weed that retains its seed until harvest. However, earlier flowering time (leading to increased seed shedding before harvest) is a risk to HWSC effectiveness. This study investigated the effects of repeated HWSC on the evolution of R. raphanistrum flowering dates, using two methods: an adaptation of the SOMER model that included flowering genes (called SOMEF); and a mathematical calculation of the endpoints of flowering date evolution utilizing the relevant life-history equations. In weed management systems with highly effective herbicides, the additional use of HWSC predicted R. raphanistrum population extinction. Low weed numbers and rapid extinction meant that any gradual evolution in days to first flower (DFF) was insufficient to lead to HWSC evasion. In alternative management systems with less vigorous herbicide control and using HWSC, modeling predicted a maximum 2- to 3-d reduction in DFF. In contrast, mathematical calculations of the phenotypes maximizing seeds returned to the seedbank predicted an endpoint to evolution of 12-d earlier flowering, which matched field observations. However, genetic change postulated by the mathematical calculations was not hampered by a restriction to changing DFF allele frequencies. Unknown accompanying genetic changes could affect germination dates or flowering triggers.

Simulation modeling that included only flowering genes failed to predict the magnitude of an observed 12-d reduction in DFF. Differences between the 12 d observed in the field (and predicted using mathematical calculations) and the modest changes demonstrated in this field-based modeling study are postulated to be due to unaccounted evolutionary changes in R. raphanistrum.

Palmer amaranth (Amaranthus palmeri S. Watson, AMAPA) is one of the most troublesome weeds in North America due to its rapid growth rate, substantial seed production, competitiveness and the evolution of herbicide-resistant populations. Though frequently encountered in the South, Midwest, and Mid-Atlantic regions of the United States, A. palmeri was recently identified in soybean [Glycine max (L.) Merr.] fields in Genesee, Orange, and Steuben counties, NY, where glyphosate was the primary herbicide for in-crop weed control. This research, conducted in 2023, aimed to (1) describe the dose response of three putative resistant NY A. palmeri populations to glyphosate, (2) determine their mechanisms of resistance, and (3) assess their sensitivity to other postemergence herbicides commonly used in NY crop production systems. Based on the effective dose necessary to reduce aboveground biomass by 50% (ED50), the NY populations were 42 to 67 times more resistant to glyphosate compared with a glyphosate-susceptible population. Additionally, the NY populations had elevated EPSPS gene copy numbers ranging from 25 to 135 located within extrachromosomal circular DNA (eccDNA). Label rate applications of Weed Science Society of America (WSSA) Group 2 herbicides killed up to 42% of the NY populations of A. palmeri. Some variability was observed among populations in response to WSSA Group 5 and 27 herbicides. All populations were effectively controlled by labeled rates of herbicides belonging to WSSA Groups 4, 10, 14, and 22. Additional research is warranted to confirm whether NY populations have evolved multiple resistance to herbicides within other WSSA groups and to develop effective A. palmeri management strategies suitable for NY crop production.

Digitaria ciliaris var. chrysoblephara (Fig. & De Not.) R.R. Stewart is an annual xeromorphic weed that severely infests direct-seeded rice fields in China. Herbicide resistance is emerging in D. ciliaris var. chrysoblephara owing to extensive and recurrent use of the acetyl-CoA carboxylase (ACCase)-inhibiting herbicide metamifop. In this study, a total of 53 D. ciliaris var. chrysoblephara populations randomly sampled from direct-seeded rice fields across Jiangsu Province were investigated for metamifop resistance and potential resistance-endowing mutations. Single-dose assays revealed that 17 (32.1%) populations evolved resistance to metamifop and 5 (9.4%) populations were in the process of developing resistance. The resistance index (RI) of metamifop-resistant populations ranged from 2.7 to 32.1. Amino acid substitutions (Ile-1781-Leu, Trp-2027-Cys/Ser, and Ile-2041-Asn) in ACCase genes were detected in resistant D. ciliaris var. chrysoblephara plants and caused various cross-resistance patterns to ACCase-inhibiting herbicides. All of four resistant populations (YC07, YZ09, SQ03, and HA06), with different ACCase mutations, exhibited cross-resistance to the aryloxyphenoxypropionate (APP) herbicides cyhalofop-butyl (RI values: 10.0 to 19.9), fenoxaprop-P-ethyl (RI values: 53.7 to 132.8), and haloxyfop-P-methyl (RI values: 6.2 to 62.6), and the phenylpyrazoline (DEN) pinoxaden (RI values: 2.3 to 5.4), but responded differently to the cyclohexanedione (CHD) herbicides clethodim and sethoxydim. It is noteworthy that four postemergence herbicides used for rice cropping, including bispyribac-sodium, pyraclonil, quinclorac, and anilofos, showed poor control effect against D. ciliaris var. chrysoblephara, suggesting few alternations for managing this weed in rice fields except ACCase inhibitors. In conclusion, this work demonstrated that the D. ciliaris var. chrysoblephara had developed resistance to ACCase-inhibiting herbicides in rice cultivation of China, and target-site amino acid substitutions in ACCase were primarily responsible for metamifop resistance.

Globe artichoke [Cynara cardunculus L. var. scolymus (L.) Fiori] is one of the most important crops across the Mediterranean basin, where weeds are an important biotic constraint limiting crop yields. However, the effects of globe artichoke–cropping systems on weeds have been rarely tested. Following the demand for eco-friendly weed management practices, a multi-location trial (13 farms) was carried out, measuring weed seedbanks and aboveground communities within four globe artichoke–cropping systems: globe artichoke monoculture (ART), past cultivation of globe artichoke (8 to 10 yr ago) (past-ART), a globe artichoke–durum wheat (Triticum durum Desf.) rotation (ART-WHEAT), and a control where globe artichoke was never grown. Both below- and aboveground weed communities were dominated by annual therophytes, but a low correspondence was found between both types of communities. Averaged over farms, ART highly reduced both the weed soil seedbank (1,600 seeds m−2 on average) and the aboveground weed biomass (only 3.4 g dry weight m−2) compared with the control, with a decrease of 72% in the soil seedbank and 99% in the aboveground flora. Moreover, on the farms where globe artichoke was previously grown, a very low aboveground weed biomass (77% less than control) was found. In addition, ART contributed to the preservation of high levels of weed diversity (except for aboveground communities) and therefore avoided the creation of a specialized weed flora. In conclusion, we suggest the inclusion of globe artichoke into crop rotation schemes in Mediterranean agroecosystems as a sustainable tool for reducing both the soil weed seedbank and aboveground weeds, thus reducing the requirement of direct weed control methods and preserving the environment.

Drill-interseeding cover crops into corn (Zea mays L.) is an emerging establishment method in northern U.S. production regions. However, cover crop performance in interseeded systems remains variable, and creating environments that are conducive to cover crop but not weed growth is challenging. Cultural practices that partition resources between corn and interseeded cover crops have potential to improve performance if weeds are adequately managed. This study evaluated interactions among corn hybrids differing in leaf architecture (upright, pendulum), corn row spacing (76 cm, 152 cm), and interseeding timing (V3, V6) on light transmittance, relative fitness of cover crop species (cereal rye [Secale cereale L.], annual ryegrass (Lolium multiflorum Lam), red clover [Trifolium pratense L.]) and weeds, and corn grain yield at three U.S. Northeast locations. Results showed that light transmittance through the corn canopy was greater in 152-cm row spacing compared with 76-cm row spacing at the V6 growth stage, with the magnitude of difference increasing at the V10 corn growth stage. Corn hybrids had a marginal effect on light transmittance. The effect of row spacing and interseeding timing on fall cover crop biomass varied across cover crop species and locations. In 76-cm rows, interseeding earlier (V3) increased cover crop biomass production. The relative fitness of cover crops was greater than that of weeds in each combination of cultural practices that included narrow spacing (76 cm), whereas the relative fitness of weeds was greater than that of cover crops when interseeding in wide rows (152 cm). The effect of row spacing on corn yield varied among locations, with higher yields observed in 76-cm row spacing compared with 152-cm at two of three locations. Our results show that interseeding early (V3) on 76-cm row spacing can balance cover crop and corn production management goals, while placing cover crops at a relative fitness advantage over weeds.

Pollinators risk exposure to insecticide residue when visiting weedy flowers in urban landscapes. Previous research shows that pollinators are routinely exposed to a variety of pesticides, but herbicides have exhibited minimal toxicity and did not contribute to the modeled risk quotients. Herbicides from different modes of action may deter pollinators from visiting turfgrass weeds, but their temporal influence on floral quality and pollinator foraging is unaddressed. Research experiments were conducted at Blacksburg, VA, in 2023 to assess the effect of four herbicides on floral morphology and ultraviolet (UV) reflectance of three different UV floral classes of weeds and associated pollinator foraging visits. Among 1,080 assessments per weed species, honeybees (Apis mellifera), bumble bees (Bombus spp.), solitary bees (Chelostoma florisomne), and flies (Diptera spp.) accounted for 94%, 2%, 3%, and 1%, respectively, of the total pollinator visitations on white clover (Trifolium repens L.) inflorescences; 71%, 2%, 0%, and 27%, respectively, on dandelion (Taraxacum officinale F.H. Wigg.) flowers; and 0%, 0%, 78%, and 22%, respectively, on bulbous buttercup (Ranunculus bulbosus L.) flowers. Pollinator visitation and floral quality were temporarily affected by herbicide application, with some herbicides eliminating food resources, while others transiently impacted floral quality and density. The combination of 2,4-D + dicamba + MCPP and topramezone eliminated pollinator foraging visits, but on differing temporal scales of 3 d for auxins and 14 d for topramezone. Halosulfuron and sulfentrazone transiently suppressed floral quality and density, with varying degrees of deterrence on pollinators depending on the weed species. All evaluated herbicides reduced radiometric UV reflectance of T. officinale petal apices, but only synthetic auxin and topramezone reduced digitally assessed floral UV-reflecting area. Petal UV reflectance appears to contribute but not solely influence pollinator foraging behavior. UV-absorbing and UV-reflecting flowers differed in UV-reflectance response to herbicides, but pollinators were similarly deterred. Results suggest that herbicides may offer a variety of management solutions to pollinator deterrence in areas slated for insecticide treatment, including long-term or transient deterrence with potential food-resource preservation.

Turfgrass managers are concerned about zoysiagrass (Zoysia japonica Steud.) injury from nonselective herbicide treatment during winter dormancy. Research was conducted to assess factors affecting spray penetration into semidormant ‘Meyer’ zoysiagrass canopies and to evaluate absorption and translocation of [14C]glyphosate and [14C]glufosinate into green leaves and subtending stolons. Absorption of [14C]glyphosate and [14C]glufosinate was up to four times greater in stolons than in leaves. Zoysiagrass leaves treated with [14C]glufosinate had more rapid 14C absorption than those treated with [14C]glyphosate. More 14C translocated out of the treated area following [14C]glyphosate treatment compared with [14C]glufosinate and moved more readily from stolon to leaves than from leaves to stolon. When extended-range, flat-fan spray tips (XR) were positioned 61 cm above zoysiagrass, 73% and 11% of recovered colorant was extracted from dormant vegetation in the upper and lower canopy levels. Turbo TeeJet® spray tips (TTI) deposited fewer droplets into the upper canopy and more droplets into the middle and lower canopy regardless of position above the turf surface. Increasing pressure from 103 to 414 kPa increased droplet velocities from XR and TTI nozzles and decreased droplet diameters of XR nozzles. Droplet diameters were also substantially increased when using TTI nozzles compared with XR nozzles. Droplet diameter and associated mass were more determinant of turfgrass canopy penetration than droplet velocity. At 60 L ha−1 of carrier volume, 23% of colorant reached the lower canopy level, and this quantity increased by 2.3% per additional 100 L ha−1. When carrier volume was reduced from 584 to 60 L ha−1, 48% less colorant was delivered to the lower canopy level. Given that subcanopy stolons are always present and absorb more glyphosate and glufosinate than leaves, practices such as avoiding induction-type nozzles, raising spray height, and reducing spray volume can reduce herbicide delivery and potential injury to semidormant zoysiagrass.

Genera of the Orobanchaceae family are holoparasites that parasitize various hosts. Several members of this family cause severe damage to diverse crop plants. While the biological and life cycles of these parasites have been studied, their metabolism has received little attention, most of which focused on Egyptian broomrape [Orobanche aegyptiaca Pers.; syn.: Phelipanche aegyptiaca (Pers.) Pomel]. This study aimed at obtaining more knowledge about the primary metabolic profiling of four parasite species belonging to the Orobanchaceae family—sunflower broomrape (Orobanche cumana Wallr.), Orobanche cernua, P. aegyptiaca, and branched broomrape [Orobanche ramosa L.; syn.: Phelipanche ramosa (L.) Pomel.]—that developed on tomato (Solanum lycopersicum L.) as a host. Gas chromatography–mass spectrometry analysis demonstrated that significant differences in metabolite content occur between species belonging to Orobanche compared with those belonging to Phelipanche. This finding adds another layer to the separation of these two genera in addition to morphological separation. Moreover, each of these four species exhibits different metabolic profiles, indicating that the parasites can absorb the host’s metabolites but also have the ability to self-regulate their metabolites in order to grow and develop.

Shade avoidance alters the way plants grow, usually causing them to grow taller at the expense of placing resources into leaves, roots, seeds, and other harvestable materials. Sugar beet (Beta vulgaris L.) is a rosette-forming biennial species that has limited capacity to grow tall in the first year of growth. In the context of crop–weed competition, it is mostly unknown to what extent shade avoidance reduces yield in sugar beet relative to other effects like resource competition. To determine the extent of yield loss due to shade avoidance in a field-relevant situation, sugar beets were grown alongside Kentucky bluegrass (Poa pratensis L.) sod in a field study. Roots were separated with a steel root barrier placed into the ground between the grass and beets. Four treatments included a weed-free control (no root barrier or grass), a root barrier control (with root barrier but no grass), shade avoidance (with root barrier and grass), and full competition (with grass but no root barrier). The presence versus absence of grass was the primary driver of effects on measured sugar beet growth and yield parameters, regardless of whether a root barrier was present. Leaf number and root length were also impacted by the presence of the root barrier. These results suggest that shade avoidance is at least as important as root interactions and resource depletion in the context of early-season sugar beet yield loss due to weeds.

Sourgrass [Digitaria insularis (L.) Mez ex Ekman] is considered the most troublesome weed in agronomic crops in South America. Overreliance on glyphosate has selected for resistant populations, although the resistance mechanisms remain unknown. Recently, populations were identified that exhibited multiple resistance to 5-enolpyruvylshikimate-3-phosphate synthase (EPSPS) and acetyl-CoA carboxylase (ACCase) inhibitors, posing a significant challenge due to the lack of alternative control options. This project aimed to identify the resistance patterns and levels to glyphosate and ACCase inhibitors of three suspected resistant populations (P1, P2, and P3), and elucidate the resistance mechanisms. We performed dose–response experiments with clethodim, fluazifop-P-butyl, glyphosate, and pinoxaden to identify the possibility of cross- and multiple resistance and to quantify the resistance levels. We sequenced the ACCase and EPSPS genes to test the hypothesis that target-site mutations were involved in the resistance mechanisms, given the resistance patterns observed. Our results indicated that two of the tested populations, P1 and P2, were multiple resistant to glyphosate and all ACCase-inhibitor classes, while P3 was resistant to glyphosate only. Resistance levels varied by herbicide, with resistance indices ranging from 2.7- to nearly 2,000-fold. We identified an amino acid substitution in ACCase at position 2078 (Asp-2078-Gly), homozygous for both P1 and P2, corroborating the resistance patterns observed. Interestingly, EPSPS sequencing identified multiple heterozygous DNA polymorphisms that resulted in amino acid substitutions at positions 106 (P1 and P2) or at both 102 and 106 (P3), indicating multiple evolutionary origins of glyphosate-resistance evolution. We show for the first time the genetic mechanisms of multiple resistance to glyphosate and ACCase in D. insularis, and provide a thorough discussion of the evolutionary and management implications of our work.

Basal bark treatment with triclopyr butoxyethyl ester is used to control woody invasive plants, including Brazilian peppertree (Schinus terebinthifolia Raddi). However, the ester formulation cannot be applied where standing water is present, which includes wetlands where S. terebinthifolia is found. In 2009, a low-volatile acid formulation of triclopyr was labeled for use in aquatic sites, which allows for basal bark applications when standing water is present. This formulation may have utility for controlling woody plants in standing water. However, anecdotal observations of injury to non-target plants following applications during periods of inundation have been reported. To address this, mesocosm studies were conducted to assess non-target injury through triclopyr root exudation or release from the surface of treated stems via flooding. Mesocosms contained S. terebinthifolia as the treated target, while sugarberry (Celtis laevigata Willd.), buttonbush (Cephalanthus occidentalis L.), and red maple (Acer rubrum L.) were included as non-targets. In the first study, the pathway of root exudation for non-target injury following triclopyr (34 g L−1) basal bark application was isolated with activated charcoal placed at the soil surface. In the second study, mesocosms were flooded to assess triclopyr release from the surface of treated stems and subsequent non-target injury. Defoliation of non-target species posttreatment was ≤8%, and triclopyr was detected at ≤5 µg L−1 in mesocosm wells when activated charcoal was present. Posttreatment non-target defoliation up to 92%, coupled with triclopyr concentrations in surface waters and wells as high as 4,637 µg L−1, indicated triclopyr movement as a result of flooding. Additionally, triclopyr non-target injury from soil activity independent of flooding was observed. These findings provide limited evidence of triclopyr root exudation but considerable evidence of triclopyr release during flooding following basal bark treatment and support a cautionary approach to basal bark application when standing water is present.
