There is little information available on performance interactions for tank mixtures of topramezone and acetolactate synthase (ALS)-inhibiting herbicides. Controlled-environment and field experiments were conducted in 2006 and 2007 to determine the interactions of topramezone when tank-mixed with ALS-inhibiting herbicides. Controlled-environment experiments were conducted on four annual grass species treated at the five- to six-leaf stage. Dose–response curves for large crabgrass, barnyardgrass, yellow foxtail, and green foxtail were generated for nicosulfuron or foramsulfuron alone and in combination with label rates of topramezone or mesotrione (with or without atrazine). Eight field experiments were conducted using registered rates of two ρ-hydroxyphenylpyruvate dioxygenase (HPPD)-inhibiting and three ALS-inhibiting herbicides alone and in combination. All herbicide treatments in the field were applied at the two- to three-leaf and five- to six-leaf stages of barnyardgrass, green foxtail, giant green foxtail, and witchgrass. In both the controlled environment and field experiments, antagonistic interactions were found to be species specific. In the controlled environment, nicosulfuron antagonized topramezone for the control of large crabgrass and barnyardgrass, but did not influence control of yellow or green foxtail. This antagonism was overcome with the addition of atrazine or an increased dose of nicosulfuron. Antagonism was not observed with tank mixtures of topramezone and foramsulfuron on the species tested under controlled-environment or field conditions. In the field, antagonism was not influenced by growth stage of the annual grasses. Antagonistic interactions were observed when topramezone was tank-mixed with nicosulfuron or nicosulfuron + rimsulfuron for the control of barnyardgrass and, to a lesser extent, giant green foxtail. Similar tank mixtures did not reduce control of green foxtail or witchgrass. HPPD-inhibiting herbicides are known to antagonize the activity of ALS-inhibiting herbicides for the control of annual grasses. This is the first report in the literature that an ALS-inhibiting herbicide can antagonize an HPPD-inhibiting herbicide. Thus, the chemistries of these herbicides exhibit a two-way antagonistic interaction.

Pulse crop management can increase pulse yields and N fixation, but the effects of previous pulse crop management on subsequent crop performance is poorly understood. Field studies were conducted at three locations, in the Parkland region of Alberta, Canada, between 2004 and 2006. Tannin-free faba bean, narrowleaf lupin, and field pea were planted at 0.5, 1.0, 1.5, and 2.0 times the recommended pulse planting density (PPD), with or without barley as a model weed. Faba bean produced the highest seed yields in higher precipitation environments, whereas pea produced the highest seed yields in lower precipitation environments. Lupin seed yields were consistently low. In the absence of weed interference, faba bean, pea, and lupin N-fixation yields ranged from 70 to 223, 78 to 147, and 46 to 173 kg N ha−1, respectively. On average, faba bean produced the highest N-fixation yield. The absence of weed interference and a high PPD increased pulse seed and N-fixation yields. Quality wheat crops were grown on pulse stubble without additional N fertilizer in some site–years. Management practices that increased N fixation resulted in only marginal subsequent wheat yield increases. Subsequent wheat seed yield was primarily influenced by pulse species. Pea stubble produced 11% higher wheat yields than lupin stubble but only 2% higher wheat yields than faba bean stubble. Consistently high wheat yields on pea stubble may be attributed to synchronized N release from decomposing pea residues with subsequent crop N demand and superior non-N rotational benefits.

Gene flow among herbicide-resistant (HR) canola varieties can lead to the development of multiple HR canola plants, creating volunteer canola management challenges for producers. In western Canada, escaped populations of HR canola are ubiquitous outside of cultivated fields, yet the extent of gene flow resulting in herbicide resistance trait stacking in individuals within these populations remains unknown. The objectives of this study were to document the presence of single and multiple herbicide resistance traits and assess the extent of gene flow within escaped canola populations. Seed was collected from 16 escaped canola populations along the verges of fields and roadways in four agricultural regions in southern Manitoba from 2004 to 2006. Glyphosate resistance was found in 14 (88%) of these populations, glufosinate resistance in 13 (81%) populations, and imidazolinone resistance in five (31%) populations. Multiple herbicide resistance was observed at levels consistent with previously published canola outcrossing rates in 10 (62%) of the tested populations. In 2005 and 2006, maternal plants from two escaped populations were tested using trait indicator test strips for glyphosate and glufosinate resistance to confirm outcrossing events. In 2005, two of 13 tested maternal plants with single herbicide resistance traits produced progeny with both glyphosate and glufosinate resistance. In 2006, of 21 tested plants, 10 single HR maternal plants produced multiple HR progeny, and five nonresistant maternal plants produced resistant offspring. This is the first report indicating that intraspecific gene flow results in stacking of herbicide resistance traits in individuals within escaped canola populations, confirming that multiple HR canola volunteers are not confined to agricultural fields. Results of this study suggest that escaped populations of crop plants can contribute to the spread of genetically engineered novel traits, which has important implications for containment, especially for highly controversial pharmaceutical and industrial traits in crop plants.

Since the first identification of glyphosate resistance in horseweed in California in 2005, the glyphosate-sensitive (GS) biotype has become rare, whereas the glyphosate-resistant (GR) biotype has become dominant in the eastern San Joaquin Valley (SJV). This is an area exposed to regular usage of glyphosate and to high levels of ambient ground-level ozone (O3). A previous study showed that SJV biotypes of GR are more robust than GS in the absence of ozone. This advantage was reduced, though not eliminated, at elevated O3. This suggests that the rapid evolution of resistance to glyphosate was not linked to evolution of resistance to O3. In this study, we contrasted these responses to O3 in the presence of concurrent glyphosate pressure. The GR and GS biotypes differed in growth and injury, reflecting their known differential sensitivities to glyphosate, but responded similarly to O3 with no O3 × biotype interaction. Ozone imposed an unexpected, but ecologically important, impact that enhanced the performance advantage of GR over GS. In the presence of the combination of glyphosate and O3 the biomass of GR was reduced to low but viable levels, whereas the biomass of GS was reduced to nonviable levels that effectively removed it from the population. These data do not support a genetic linkage between resistance to glyphosate and to O3, but suggest that air pollution may have accelerated the fixation of glyphosate-resistance alleles in California horseweed populations.

Experiments were conducted to investigate the acclimation of Palmer amaranth to shading. Plants were grown in the field beneath black shade cloths providing 47 and 87% shade and in full sunlight (no shading). All photosynthetic measurements were taken 4 wk after initiating the shade treatments. Photosynthetic rates of Palmer amaranth grown under 47% shade increased with increasing photosynthetic active radiation (PAR) similar to 0% shade-grown plants. Light-saturated photosynthetic rates were predicted beyond the highest measured PAR of 1,200 µmol m−2 s−1 for plants grown under 0 and 47% shade. Plants acclimated to increased shading by decreasing light-saturated photosynthetic rates from 60.5 µmol m−2 s−1 under full sun conditions to 26.4 µmol m−2 s−1 under 87% shade. Plants grown under 87% shade lowered their light compensation point. Rate of increase in plant height was similar among shade treatments. Plants responded to increased shading by a 13 to 44% reduction in leaf appearance rate (leaf number growing degree days [GDD]−1) and a 22 to 63% reduction in main-stem branch appearance rate (main-stem branch number GDD−1) compared with full sunlight. Palmer amaranth specific leaf area increased from 68 to 97 cm2 g−1 as shading increased to 87%. Plants acclimated to 47% shade by increasing total leaf chlorophyll from 22.8 µg cm−2 in full sunlight to 31.7 µg cm−2 when shaded; however, the increase was not significant at 87% shading. Thus, it is concluded that Palmer amaranth shows photosynthetic and morphological acclimation to 87% or less shading.

Intraspecific genetic variation may contribute significantly to invasiveness and control problems, but has been characterized to date in relatively few invasive weed species. We examined 56 intersimple sequence repeat (ISSR) loci in 220 individuals from 11 invading populations of yellow toadflax sampled across five western states. All populations showed high levels of genetic diversity. Estimated values for Shannon's diversity measure ranged from 0.217 to 0.388, and for expected heterozygosity from 0.178 to 0.260. Nei's total gene diversity index (HT), on the basis of all individuals across all populations, was 0.267. Partitioning of genetic variance using analysis of molecular variance revealed 1.7% of genetic variation among regional population groups, 29.1% among populations within groups, and 69.2% within populations, consistent with expectations for an outcrossing species but suggesting little geographic differentiation. Pairs of adjacent individuals identical at all ISSR loci that appeared to be ramets of a single clone were detected in only one population. This indicates that patch expansion in yellow toadflax is driven more by sexual reproduction via seed than by rhizomatous clonal spread, at least at the spatial scale of sampling for this study. Eight populations had significant values for Mantel's R at P = 0.05, suggesting some fine-scale positive genetic structuring, possibly from restricted gene flow. Population clustering on the basis of Nei's genetic distance between populations and unweighted pair group method with arithmetic mean did not reflect geographic location. It is likely that multiple introductions of this species have occurred across the Intermountain West, followed by extensive genetic recombination. High levels of genetic diversity within yellow toadflax populations pose management challenges, as already seen in reports of variable response to herbicide application and limited impacts of biocontrol agent releases.

Intercropping is an eco-friendly approach for reducing weed problems through nonchemical methods. Intercrop effects on weed community structure have rarely been studied. A 6-yr study was initiated in 1999 and the response of aboveground weed flora (1999–2002 and 2005) and seed bank (2005) to the intercropping of saffron and black zira, two perennial crops was investigated. Mixtures consisted of 0/100, 25/75, 50/50, 75/25, and 100/0 saffron/black zira ratios, each planted at three densities: 30, 50, and 70 plant m−2. The effect of planting density on weed populations was variable and in most cases not significant. However, mixture ratios caused drastic species compositional changes in the weed community for which univariate and multivariate analyses explored four major associations: (1) weeds that favored a higher ratio of saffron in mixtures (e.g., grasses, field bindweed, pigweeds), (2) weeds that preferred a higher ratio of black zira in mixtures (e.g., Persian speedwell, Brassicaceae complex, Polygoaceae complex, and earthsmoke), (3) weeds that were more abundant in 50/50 mixtures (e.g., Caryophyllaceae complex), and (4) weeds that showed no specific pattern (e.g., common lambsquarterss). Pigweeds, prostrate knotweed, and common lambsquarters dominated the viable seed bank with relative densities of 48, 28, and 8%, respectively. The seed bank of most weed species responded to mixture ratios in a similar manner to those of their corresponding aboveground flora. Seed density decreased as soil depth increased, leading to the accumulation of 66, 22, and 12% of viable seeds in soil layers of 0–5, 5–15 and 15–25 cm, respectively. Greater weed and seed densities were found in more pure stands of black zira. These findings contribute to improving current understanding of crop–weed community structures and may help in developing weed management practices.

The phase-out of methyl bromide requires alternative nutsedge management options in vegetable systems. Options that target tuber production, the primary means of reproduction, will be most beneficial. A study was conducted to evaluate the response of purple nutsedge and yellow nutsedge foliar growth and tuber production to a range of glyphosate rates. Glyphosate was applied at six rates between 0.41 and 2.57 kg ae ha−1 to 5-wk-old nutsedge plants with multiple shoots. The rate of glyphosate needed to reduce growth 50% (I50) was similar for purple nutsedge foliar growth (0.58 kg ha−1) and tuber biomass (0.55 kg ha−1). In contrast, I50 for yellow nutsedge foliar growth was 0.73 kg ha−1, which was greater than the I50 for tuber biomass (0.41 kg ha−1). First-order tubers, those directly attached to the initial tuber, had an I50 of 0.70 and 0.44 kg ha−1 of glyphosate for purple nutsedge and yellow nutsedge tuber biomass, respectively. For all higher-order tubers, I50 values ranged from 0.29 to 0.60 and 0.14 to 0.30 kg ha−1 of glyphosate for purple nutsedge and yellow nutsedge tuber biomass, respectively. Glyphosate at 0.74 kg ha−1 prevented fourth-order purple nutsedge and third-order yellow nutsedge tuber production (terminal tubers for yellow nutsedge). Fifth- and sixth-order purple nutsedge tuber production was eliminated by the lowest tested rate of glyphosate (0.41 kg ha−1). Effective nutsedge management options will require consistent control between spring and autumn crops. Glyphosate is economical, poses no herbicide carryover issues to vegetables, and minimizes nutsedge tuber production; therefore, it is a suitable candidate to manage nutsedges.

Physical and chemical methods of managing invasive plants (weeds) create disturbances that paradoxically often promote these species because weeds tend to have traits that confer competitive advantages over desired species in disturbed habitats. A more holistic and sustainable method of managing invasive plants is to design disturbance regimes to favor desired species over weeds. This study investigated how the biomass of a herbicide-tolerant plant, alligator weed, and its competitors respond to different chemical disturbances over a 2-yr period. We compared the response of alligator weed and its monocotyledon competitors to 16 different herbicide treatments in a blocked 4 by 2 by 2 factorial design. Treatments included broad spectrum (nonselective) and dicotyledon specific (selective) herbicides applied at two concentrations (variable depending on herbicide) and two frequency regimes (three or four applications). Belowground biomass of alligator weed in unmanipulated control plots was 10 times greater than aboveground biomass, highlighting the need to reduce belowground material if control is to be achieved. All herbicide treatments reduced belowground alligator weed biomass when compared with controls; however in the short term (8 d after the final treatment), even four applications at the highest listed concentration were not sufficient to eliminate alligator weed from study plots. Over the long term (15 mo after the final treatment), selective herbicide application resulted in a sustained reduction in alligator weed biomass and an increase in monocot biomass.

Late-season giant ragweed emergence in Ohio crop fields complicates decisions concerning the optimum time to implement control measures. Our objectives were to develop a hydrothermal time emergence model for a late-emerging biotype and validate the model in a variety of locations and burial environments. To develop the model, giant ragweed seedlings were counted and removed weekly each growing season from 2000 to 2003 in a fallow field located in west central Ohio. Weather data, soil characteristics and geographic location were used to predict soil thermal and moisture conditions with the Soil Temperature and Moisture Model (STM2). Hydrothermal time (θHT) initiated March 1 and base values were extrapolated from the literature (Tb = 2 C, ψb = −10 MPa). Cumulative percent emergence initially increased rapidly and reached 60% of maximum by late April (approximately 400 θHT), leveled off for a period in May, and increased again at a lower rate before concluding in late July (approximately 2,300 θHT). The period in May when few seedlings emerged was not subject to soil temperatures or water potentials less than the θHT base values. The biphasic pattern of emergence was modeled with two successive Weibull models that were validated in 2005 in a tilled and a no-tillage environment and in 2006 at a separate location in a no-tillage environment. Root-mean-square values for comparing actual and model predicted cumulative emergence values ranged from 8.0 to 9.5%, indicating a high degree of accuracy. This experiment demonstrated an approach to emergence modeling that can be used to forecast emergence on a local basis according to weed biotype and easily obtainable soil and weather data.

Weeds are often portrayed as growing in resource-rich environments. However, weeds growing within crops often deal with variable nitrogen (N) availability and reduced levels of light quantity and quality as a result of the crop canopy. In order to explore how weeds adapt to such stressful growing conditions, growth-cabinet studies were conducted using common lambsquarters as a model weed to determine how light, defined in terms of photosynthetic photon flux density (PPFD) and quality (red to far-red light ratio [R/FR]), and N stress influence the expression of adaptive traits that contribute to survival. Development rate of common lambsquarters was not influenced by low N; however, low N in addition to low R/FR delayed the rate of leaf appearance. Main-stem leaf number was reduced by low PPFD but was insensitive to N and R/FR. Neither doses of N had any influence on the shoot-to-root ratio. Plants also responded to the interaction of light and N. Under low PPFD and high N, plants adapted by growing taller, increasing biomass allocation to leaves, and producing more leaf area per mol of accumulated incident PPFD. Plants adapted to the most stressful treatment combination of low PPFD and low N by producing thinner leaves and increasing inflorescences per mol of accumulated incident PPFD. Seed production was reduced under low PPFD, but 1,000-seed weight and carbon concentration was unaffected. Although reduced in number, the total N concentration of the seed increased under low PPFD treatments, especially under low N. The adaptive traits identified in this study provide a greater understanding of the survival and persistence of common lambsquarters.

Mesotrione is an effective herbicide for volunteer potato control but is not selective in several crops, including onion and carrot. Studies were conducted in 2006 to evaluate the effectiveness of wiper-applied mesotrione for control of volunteer potato in a potato crop. Surprisingly, nontreated potatoes growing adjacent to mesotrione-treated plants exhibited bleaching symptoms resembling mesotrione injury. Additional field trials confirmed injury to nontreated plants growing within 26 cm of potatoes treated with mesotrione applied with a wiper at 0.25, 0.5, and 1% (v/v) solutions. Greenhouse bioassays confirmed that mesotrione applied to potato leaves moved down through the plant and was exuded into perlite potting medium in sufficient quantities to injure potato plants that were exposed to the leachate from the perlite pots. In tracer studies, 52% of 14C-labeled mesotrione applied to potato leaves was absorbed into the potato plant by 15 d and 15% of the absorbed 14C-mesotrione was exuded into the soil and soil leachate. Mesotrione applied to potato by the wick application method has potential to injure neighboring susceptible plants from root uptake of exuded mesotrione.

Information on nitrogen fertilizer effects on crop–weed competitive interactions might aid in developing improved weed management programs. A controlled environment study was conducted to examine the effect of three N rates on the competitive ability of four weed species grown with wheat. The four weed species were chosen to represent species that varied in their growth responsiveness to nitrogen (N): Persian darnel (low), Russian thistle (low), redroot pigweed (high), and wild oat (high). Wheat and each weed species were grown in a replacement series design at N rates of 60, 120, and 240 mg N kg−1 soil. The competitive ability of the low N-responsive species, Persian darnel and Russian thistle, was not influenced by N rate, supporting our hypothesis that N rate would have little effect on the competitiveness of species responding minimally to N. Conversely, the competitiveness of the high N-responsive species redroot pigweed progressively improved as N rate increased. However, wild oat competitiveness was unaffected by N fertilizer rate. There is some evidence from this study to suggest that fertilizer management strategies that favor crops over weeds deserve greater attention when weed infestations consist of species known to be highly responsive to higher soil N levels. Information gained in this study will be used to advise farmers of the importance of strategic fertilizer management in terms of both weed management and crop yield.

The influence of soybean row width and glyphosate application timing was determined on survival, biomass, and seed production of cohorts from a mixed population of Palmer amaranth and pusley species (Florida and Brazil pusley) along with soybean seed yield. The first Palmer amaranth and pusley cohort comprised plants that emerged from soybean planting through the V3 (3 wk after soybean emergence [WAE]) soybean stage (cohort 1). The second cohort comprised plants that emerged between the V3 to V6 (5 WAE) soybean stages (cohort 2), and the third cohort emerged after the V6 through the R2 soybean stage (cohort 3). Glyphosate at 840 g ae ha−1 was applied at V3; V6; V3 and V6; and V3, V6, and R2 in rows either 19 or 97 cm wide. A nontreated control was included for comparison in each row width. Sequential glyphosate applications at V3 and V6 or at V3, V6, and R2 soybean stages resulted in 1 to 3% survival of cohort 1 compared with 23 to 28% survival after a single glyphosate application. Vegetative biomass production by cohort 1 accounted for 71% of the total pusley biomass produced in the nontreated plots. Cohort 1, 2, and 3 contributed 68, 31, and 1%, respectively, of the total 37,900 seeds m−2 produced by pusley plants in nontreated plots. Delaying a glyphosate application to the V6 stage resulted in higher biomass and more than twice the seed produced from cohort 1 when compared with cohort 2. Glyphosate applied at V3 and V6 stages prevented pusley seed production from cohort 1, and an additional glyphosate application at the R2 stage prevented seed production from cohorts 2 and 3. No Palmer amaranth emergence occurred after the V6 soybean stage in either row width. A single glyphosate application at the V3 or V6 stage eliminated cohort 1 of Palmer amaranth in narrow rows. Palmer amaranth plants from cohort 1 in wide rows that survived the V3 glyphosate application produced 3.3 g m−2 biomass and 600 seeds m−2. Averaged over years and row widths, soybean yields after sequential glyphosate applications were 2,490 to 2,640 kg ha−1 compared with 1,850 to 2,020 kg ha−1 after a single glyphosate application at the V3 or V6 stage. This research confirms that sequential glyphosate applications are superior to a single application for minimizing pusley and Palmer amaranth survival, biomass, and seed production along with an improvement in soybean yields.

Joint action of the effects of atrazine and mesotrione can lead to synergistic herbicidal activity in broadleaf weed species. The objective of these experiments was to determine if specific rates are required to provide synergistic joint activity between mesotrione and atrazine in both triazine-sensitive (TS) and triazine-resistant (TR) redroot pigweed. Herbicide rates were evaluated in TS and TR redroot pigweed in two experiments: a dose response of mesotrione alone and in mixture with a constant rate of atrazine and a dose response of atrazine alone and in mixture with a constant rate of mesotrione. Results from these experiments revealed that synergism was detected in the TS pigweed when 56 g ai ha−1 mesotrione was mixed with 126 g ai ha−1 atrazine. In the TR pigweed, synergism was detected when mesotrione rate at 10 to 56 g ha−1 was mixed with a constant rate of atrazine at 126 g ha−1. Additionally, when mesotrione was held constant at 10 g ha−1, synergism was detected in mixture with atrazine from 31 to 3556 g ha−1 in TR pigweed. Furthermore, in TR pigweed, analysis of slope deviation across the dose-response curves of mesotrione with and without atrazine revealed a divergence that increased in magnitude as the rate of mesotrione increased. In other words, increased synergism was observed with increased mesotrione rate in the TR pigweed, which was also supported by biomass reduction and atrazine-like injury to the leaves. An additional experiment investigated synergism between mesotrione and bromoxynil in both TS and TR pigweed. Mesotrione at 10 g ha−1 was synergistic when paired with bromoxynil from 70 to 210 g ha−1 in both the TS and the TR pigweed.

Yellow nutsedge infests a large number of hectares in the Treasure Valley of eastern Oregon and western Idaho. Much of its continued expansion appears to be related to onion production in the valley. Fall applications of metham often produce inconsistent results when used to control yellow nutsedge before planting an onion crop. Trials were conducted in the laboratory to determine the influence on yellow nutsedge control of metham dose, duration of exposure, temperature during exposure, and tuber conditioning by washing and chilling at 3 C. All factors influenced metham efficacy against yellow nutsedge tubers. The dose causing 50% reduction in sprouting tubers (I 50) for metham ranged from 22 to 76 mg kg−1 of soil and was lower for conditioned tubers than nonconditioned tubers across all conditions, except when tubers were exposed at 25 C for 3 d. Nonconditioned tubers were unaffected by metham after 1 d exposure at 5 C. Increasing exposure temperature or increasing exposure duration decreased sprouting for nonconditioned tubers. As exposure duration and exposure temperature increased, differences among conditioned and nonconditioned tubers were less. Temperature and exposure duration affects metham efficacy against yellow nutsedge, and the condition of the tubers at the time of treatment also has a significant effect. Applications of metham at a time when yellow nutsedge tubers are not dormant may improve yellow nutsedge control.

Greenhouse experiments were conducted to evaluate growth and reproduction of Benghal dayflower in response to daily (nondrought stress) and weekly (drought stress) irrigation. With daily irrigation, Benghal dayflower plants added one leaf per plant each week during the initial 6 wk of growth and then increased leaf number eightfold between the intervals of 6 and 10 wk after planting (WAP) and 10 and 15 WAP. By 15 WAP each plant had in excess of 400 leaves. Benghal dayflower plant height increased 2.4 cm wk−1 between 5 and 14 WAP, increasing eightfold during this interval, while plant width increased 20-fold. Aerial spathe formation began between 7 and 8 WAP, with 26 spathes maturing (containing seeds ready for dispersal) each week beginning at 11 WAP. In another study, the influence of duration of drought stress at intervals between 7 and 56 d on early growth and development of cotton and Benghal dayflower was evaluated. Benghal dayflower aboveground biomass was 3.5 times greater than cotton. There was an inverse linear relationship between aboveground biomass and duration of drought stress for cotton and Benghal dayflower, though there was a more rapid decline for Benghal dayflower. A final study evaluated Benghal dayflower response to weekly moisture regimes that approximated 13, 25, 50, and 100% of soil field capacity. Benghal dayflower aerial spathes were 4.6 times more numerous than subterranean spathes. Rate of seed production decreased in a linear manner with decreasing water volume, however, rate of subterranean seed production was less affected by water volume than was aerial seed production. These data indicate that Benghal dayflower thrives under high soil moisture regimes, but that drought stress inhibits growth and reproduction. Cotton appears to be more drought tolerant than Benghal dayflower. Judicious water use in cotton cropping systems in the southeastern United States could be an important component of multiple-tactic Benghal dayflower management program.

Crop tolerance (CT), the crop's ability to endure or avoid competitive stress from weeds, varies between old and modern dent corn hybrids; however, this hypothesis has not been tested in sweet corn. Three modern sweet corn hybrids, known to vary in canopy density, were subjected to a range of wild-proso millet densities under irrigated conditions in Washington and primarily rain-fed conditions in Illinois. A path analysis was used to identify relationships among CT and specific canopy properties important to competitive interactions. Crop tolerance varied among hybrids in three of four site–years. Sweet corn hybrid ‘Spirit’ suffered higher yield losses than hybrids ‘WHT2801’ and ‘GH2547’. Generally higher yield loss parameter estimates in Illinois, compared with Washington, suggests CT may have more to offer for weed management in the north-central than north-western United States. Path analysis indicated that wild-proso millet biomass and seedling population density were both important factors driving yield loss in canopy-sparse Spirit, whereas only early season wild-proso millet population density contributed to yield loss of canopy-dense WHT2801 and GH2547. Differential tolerance to weed interference exists among commercially available sweet corn hybrids.

Buckwheat residues can suppress both emergence and growth of weeds, but the mechanisms of this suppression are not well understood. The main objectives of this research were to evaluate the possible role of (1) low initial nitrogen (N) availability and (2) fungal pathogens in this suppression for three sensitive weed species: Powell amaranth, shepherd's-purse, and corn chamomile. Growth chamber experiments were conducted comparing weed emergence and growth in bare soil or soil with freshly incorporated buckwheat residue at multiple rates of N fertilization with or without fungicide seed treatment. In the absence of N or fungicide addition, emergence of all weed species was reduced 40 to 70%, and dry weight was reduced 85% in buckwheat residue compared with bare soil. For all three weed species, suppression of growth by buckwheat residue was completely overcome with the addition of N. For shepherd's-purse and corn chamomile (2005 only), suppression of emergence was also overcome with the addition of N. In 2006, treatment of corn chamomile seeds with fungicide resulted in a higher emergence in buckwheat residue than in bare soil. In contrast, suppression of Powell amaranth emergence was not overcome with N fertilization or fungicide treatment. The results suggest that buckwheat-mediated changes in N dynamics account entirely for suppression of weed growth but that the mechanisms responsible for suppression of emergence by buckwheat residue vary by species. Fungal and N effects account for suppression of emergence of corn chamomile and shepherd's-purse, but the mechanism of suppression for Powell amaranth remains obscure.

2,4-D is often used as a preplant burndown herbicide to help control horseweed and other broadleaf weeds before planting in no-till corn and soybean production. Isolated instances of poor horseweed control have occurred in production fields. The objective of this research was to evaluate the response of various horseweed populations to 2,4-D. In the first study, 478 horseweed populations from Indiana were subjected to 280 g ae ha−1 of 2,4-D amine in the greenhouse. This rate of 2,4-D caused visible injury and prevented all biotypes from forming new leaves for 28 days. There were specific populations where all plants sprayed were alive at 28 days after treatment (DAT), and approximately 10% of all populations had a least one plant that survived 280 g ae ha−1 2,4-D, resumed growth, and produced seed. In a dose-response study, we observed populations with three-fold more tolerance to 2,4-D. The most tolerant population had a GR90 of 513 g ae ha−1 and the most susceptible population had a GR90 of 121 g ae ha−1 based on dry weights. Growth suppression with 2,4-D was not affected by rosette size for rosettes between 0.5 and 10 cm in width.
