Mayweed chamomile is an increasing weed problem in cropping systems of the Pacific Northwest. Modern farming practices that utilize conservation tillage systems and heavy application of nitrogen fertilizers have been associated with increased soil surface water potential and decreased soil pH. Therefore, soil water potential, soil pH, and temperature effects on germination and growth of mayweed chamomile were determined in controlled laboratory tests. Germination of mayweed chamomile in soil was greatest at 30 C and a soil water potential of –25 kPa. Germination and seedling growth were similar in soils with pH 4.7, 5.1, and 6.2. Total plant weight was greatest at 20 C and reduced at 10 and 30 C. Shoot dry weight, as a percent of total dry weight, ranged from a low of 54% at 10 C to 78% at 30 C. A soil moisture potential of –10 000 kPa reduced germination and total plant weight by as much as 95% and 80%, respectively.

Field studies were undertaken in 1992 and 1993 to investigate the control of wild oat and green foxtail in flax with reduced rates of fluazifop-P and clethodim applied as tank-mixtures. Fluazifop-P plus clethodim at 50 + 18 g ai/ha controlled wild oat and green foxtail and was as effective as full rates of either herbicide applied alone. These rates represent a 20% reduction in total amount of active ingredient required to control wild oat and green foxtail. Application of fluazifop-P, and/or clethodim prior to the 3- to 4-leaf stage failed to control late emerging grass weeds. Application of graminicide mixtures at or after the 3- to 4-leaf stage controlled late emerging grass weeds and did not affect flax yield. When applied late, fluazifop-P at 175 g/ha tended to reduce flax yield, although weed control was acceptable and no foliar injury was observed following treatment. The efficacy of graminicide mixtures was reduced by addition of bromoxynil plus MCPA to the spray mix.

Field-studies were conducted over two years to determine the area of influence and duration of interference of wild poinsettia in soybean. Soybean canopy width averaged across years was reduced approximately 10% beginning at 6 wk of interference for both the 0- to 10-and 10-to 20-cm distances from the weed. Soybean dry weights decreased from 14 to 38% within 20 cm of the weed for 12 through 18 wk of interference. In 1990, soybean yield within 10 cm of wild poinsettia was similar to distances of 10 to 20 and 20 to 40 cm, but was less than that for distances greater than 40 cm from the weed. Weed interference resulted in a 9.5% yield reduction in the 0- to 10-cm distance when compared with the 80-to 100-cm distance. In contrast, yield of soybean in 1991 growing within 10 cm of the weed was less than at greater distances, corresponding to an 18% yield reduction when compared with 80 to 100 cm. Differences in wild poinsettia dry weights when growing alone and when growing within the soybean row occurred after 6 and 8 wk of interference in 1990 and 1991, respectively. In 1991 when rainfall during the growing season was twice that of the previous year, canopy width and dry weight of wild poinsettia growing within the soybean row were reduced an average of 57 and 82%, respectively, compared with weeds growing alone.

Field experiments were established in 1991 and 1992 on silty clay and sandy loam soils to evaluate various split rates of early PPI and PRE (to soybean) selective herbicides with and without paraquat for sicklepod and pitted morningglory control in stale seedbed soybean. Metribuzin at 360 g ai/ha plus 60 g ai/ha chlorimuron tank-mixed with 700 g ai/ha paraquat controlled sicklepod and pitted morningglory 83 and 91%, respectively, 4 wk after planting. Without paraquat, sicklepod and pitted morningglory control was only 65% and 67%, respectively. Imazaquin at 140 g/ha PRE tank-mixed with paraquat controlled sicklepod 78% and pitted morningglory 92%. Without paraquat, control was 38% and 84%, respectively. Early PPI applications of metribuzin plus chlorimuron or imazaquin at the full rate alone or followed by paraquat at planting resulted in poor control. With sequential treatments (PPI followed by PRE) the addition of paraquat at planting did not usually improve control, and either imazaquin or metribuzin plus chlorimuron provided equivalent control when compared with the full rate of either herbicide applied PRE. Season-long weed control was not obtained with any treatment in any experiment, and the crop was not harvestable.

Herbicides and interim summer crop treatments were studied in 1984 to 1987 to replace fungal endophyte-infected with endophyte-free tall fescue or red clover to improve forage quality. Foliar glyphosate or paraquat were applied in spring across interim crops with PRE herbicides. The interim crops, grain sorghum with atrazine, sorghum-sudangrass hybrid with metribuzin, or soybean with imazaquin, were each applied as confounded treatments across glyphosate or paraquat. Within an interim crop system, a follow-up glyphosate treatment was serially applied the next fall or spring. Then either red clover or endophyte-free tall fescue was spring drilled within the fall or spring glyphosate follow-up treatments. Glyphosate controlled old tall fescue better than paraquat, and improved the stand of the endophyte-free tall fescue. Control of tall fescue was 97% from 1.7 kg ai/ha glyphosate. Glyphosate reduced the endophyte from a 77% original infection level to 20% over all interim crops after drilling the endophyte-free tall fescue. Among interim crops, grain sorghum or the sorghum-sudangrass hybrid was more competitive than soybean with the uncontrolled tall fescue. Replacement with endophyte-free tall fescue was best in grain sorghum or sorghum-sudangrass hybrid stubble the next spring. Grain sorghum or sorghum-sudangrass hybrid following foliar glyphosate or paraquat treatment of endophyte-infected tall fescue reduced endophyte infection level in tall fescue to 28%. A follow-up fall treatment with glyphosate controlled tall fescue better than the spring retreatment and red clover and endophyte-free tall fescue were established better from fall retreated glyphosate. Red clover was easily established by drilling into the sod after treating endophyte-infected tall fescue with either glyphosate or paraquat.

Field experiments were conducted in 1988 and 1989 to (i) evaluate annual weed control with nicosulfuron applied at rates of 17 to 70 g ai/ha with several additives and (ii) evaluate annual weed control with nicosulfuron applied at rates of 17 to 105 g/ha at three corn growth stages. In 1988, in the adjuvant study, giant foxtail control increased linearly with no additive or with urea ammonium nitrate as the rate of nicosulfuron increased. Petroleum oil concentrate, nonionic surfactant, and a combination of either petroleum oil concentrate or nonionic surfactant with urea ammonium nitrate applied with nicosulfuron increased giant foxtail control to 90% or greater regardless of rate both years. Nicosulfuron at all rates with no additive and in combination with all additives controlled 93% or more of redroot pigweed and Pennsylvania smartweed both years. Corn grain yield was related to the level of giant foxtail control. In the rate by corn growth stage study, giant foxtail, redroot pigweed, and Pennsylvania smartweed control was 90% or greater regardless of nicosulfuron rate or application stage both years. Corn grain yield was related more to the duration of weed competition than the level of weed control with grain yield 8 to 12% lower with nicosulfuron applied at the V7 growth stage compared with the V3 or V5 growth stage.

In controlled-environment chambers, serrated tussock achieved maximum growth in temperature regimes of 18/11, 18/23, 24/23, or 24/17 C day/night. Growth was significantly reduced at 30/11 C, and no plants survived at 36/29 C. Serrated tussock seedlings grew slowly at first but eventually produced vigorous tussocks with as many as 2800 tillers after 140 d in the 24/17 C regime. Comparisons of climatic conditions in New South Wales, Victoria, New Zealand, South Africa, and the United States revealed that similar temperature conditions occur during the warmest eight mo of the year in areas as diverse as Oregon, Washington, the Sierran Nevada foothills of California, upper elevation rangelands in Arizona, and the southern Appalachian highlands. None of these areas has a precipitation pattern similar to those of the sites of serrated tussock weed infestation in the Southern Hemisphere. However, poorly managed pastures and unimproved rangelands in these diverse areas may be vulnerable to invasion by serrated tussock, should the weed become established in the United States.

The influence of temperature, soil moisture, and light intensity on the tolerance of spring wheat, durum wheat, and spring barley to imazamethabenz and safened fenoxaprop-p-ethyl was determined in growth chamber experiments. Imazamethabenz at 500 g/ha reduced plant height and shoot fresh weight of durum and spring wheats grown under prolonged 70% shade. The height of durum and spring wheats was reduced by imazamethabenz under a low temperature regime. Compared to the plants grown under standard conditions, the shoot weight of spring and durum wheat plants was not reduced by imazamethabenz under drought, or high and low temperature conditions. Barley tolerance to imazamethabenz was not affected by environment. All three spring cereals were tolerant to fenoxaprop-p-ethyl plus a safener at 92 g/ha; and such tolerance was not greatly affected by various environments examined.

Pecan trees subjected to different weed control and irrigation regimes from planting in 1986 through 1993 produced similar yields when irrigated (400 kg/ha, 3-yr avg) and not irrigated (320 kg/ha, 3-yr avg). Trees receiving total chemical weed control produced over five times more pecans (735 kg/ha, 3-yr avg) than weedy trees (131 kg/ha, 3-yr avg). Trees receiving disking produced more pecans when irrigated (677 kg/ha, 3-yr avg) than when not irrigated (339 kg/ha, 3-yr avg). Growth rate, expressed as increase in tree stem diameter, decreased for trees in all treatments once trees began bearing.

Glyphosate, alone and in combination with other herbicides or additives, was evaluated as a spot or shielded treatment for the control of silverleaf nightshade in cotton in three experiments over four years. Glyphosate used at 10.8 g ae/L in 1985 on dryland cotton controlled 81 to 98% of the silverleaf nightshade, but cotton lint yields were reduced by all treatments compared to the weed-free check. Glyphosate used at 7.2 g ae/L in 1986 on irrigated cotton controlled 6 to 83% of the silverleaf nightshade, and lint yields were reduced only when multiple spot applications were made. Spot applications of glyphosate were effective for silverleaf nightshade control when applied 7 wk after crop emergence in 1988. Weed control and cotton injury were lower with shielded applications than spot applications. In 1989, retreatments during a season or the next year resulted in 95% or greater silverleaf nightshade control. Cotton yield increases from herbicide treatment were not observed in 1988; however, yield increases were observed in 1989 when spot treatments were applied to the more successful 1988 plots.

Downy brome control in winter wheat is often inadequate. The effects of three crop rotations and two tillage intensities on downy brome populations and associated crop yields were determined in an experiment at Lethbridge, Alberta from 1987 to 1993. Downy brome densities in continuous winter wheat increased from 24 to 970 plants/m2 between 1988 and 1993; and were often higher with zero tillage. Inclusion of fallow or spring canola in rotation with winter wheat suppressed downy brome densities to less than 55 and 100 plants/m2, respectively, over the six years. In continuous winter wheat, yields decreased as downy brome densities increased progressively over years, indicating that monoculture winter wheat production will not be viable in regions where downy brome is prevalent unless effective herbicides are developed. In the more arid areas of the Canadian prairies, a winter wheat-fallow rotation may be most suitable but in higher precipitation areas, a winter wheat-canola rotation is a viable alternative. Crop rotation is a key component of an improved management system for control of downy brome.

Interference between itchgrass and soybean was evaluated over two years using area-of-influence procedures. Soybean seed weight within 20 cm of the weed was reduced 15 to 21%. In the first year, seed weight reduction of 9% was detected at a distance of 40 to 60 cm from the weed. Weight reductions were attributed to decreases in seed number of 12 to 22% within 40 cm of the weed compared with the 140 to 160 cm control area. Itchgrass interference increased soybean height within 40 cm of the weed, but soybean canopy width was generally unaffected. Soybean interference did not affect height of itchgrass plants, but did reduce weed stem numbers 89 to 94% when compared with weeds growing alone. With interference of 8 wk or less, both itchgrass green and dry weights were similar when weeds were growing alone or within the soybean row. Green and dry weights were reduced approximately 80% when itchgrass was in competition with soybean for 10 wk.

Field studies were conducted at Tifton, GA and Gainesville, FL to quantify the phytotoxicity of endothall formulation, rate, and time of application on peanut in a weed-free experiment. Peanut treated with mono (N,N-dimethylalkylamine) salt of endothall (DMAA endothall) were more necrotic than those treated with dipotassium salt of endothall (DP endothall), though necrosis was temporary. Injury from DMAA endothall at rates of 0.6 to 1.1 kg ai/ha was similar to the standard treatment of bentazon plus paraquat for most parameters. Peanut treated with the highest rate of DMAA endothall (4.5 kg/ha) were more necrotic and took longer to recover than lower rates. The highest rate of DP endothall (4.5 kg ai/ha) stunted peanut more than any DMAA endothall treatment. However, lower rates of DP endothall (0.6 to 2.2 kg/ha) were generally less injurious than DMAA endothall at equivalent rates. Peanut yields were not affected by either formulation of endothall at 0.6 to 1.1 kg/ha, applied from vegetative emergence through 4 wk after emergence.

Greenhouse and laboratory studies were conducted to evaluate the effects of rye residues on germination and growth of three triazine-resistant weed species, barnyardgrass, willowherb, and horseweed. Soil containing rye roots was used to determine rye residue influence on seed germination. Willowherb and horseweed germination was inhibited up to 50% with the highest rate of rye, but there was no inhibition of barnyardgrass germination. Aqueous extracts of rye shoot tissue inhibited incubator germination of horseweed and willowherb, but did not significantly influence barnyardgrass germination. Although there were no germination differences between the susceptible and resistant biotypes, both were totally inhibited when a 5% w/v solution was used. Growth inhibition of the selected weeds was evaluated using rye root residues in soil. All combinations of biotypes, species, and rye seeding rates showed significant growth inhibition.

Herbicidal control of triazine-resistant (TR) kochia was evaluated in no-till grain sorghum. Herbicides were applied early preplant (EPP) or POST. In EPP experiments, herbicides plus nonionic surfactant at 0.25% v/v were applied 7, 2, or 0 wk before planting (WBP). Fluorochloridone at 0.8 kg ai/ha applied 7 or 2 WBP, pyridate at 1.0 kg ai/ha applied 2 WBP, and paraquat at 0.4 kg ai/ha applied 0 WBP controlled 94 to 99% of TR kochia; a prepackaged mixture of glyphosate plus 2,4-D at 0.3 plus 0.6 kg ae/ha and paraquat at 0.4 kg/ha applied 7 or 2 WBP controlled 71 to 82% of TR kochia; and 2,4-D ester at 0.6 kg ae/ha applied 2 WBP controlled 75% of TR kochia. Linuron at 0.8 kg ai/ha and atrazine at 2.2 kg ai/ha were ineffective. In the POST herbicide experiments, where paraquat plus metolachlor at 0.6 plus 1.7 kg ai/ha were applied 17 d before planting, various combinations and rates of bentazon plus atrazine, bromoxynil, and dicamba with adjuvants provided good control of TR kochia that was less than 8 cm tall.

Two field experiments were conducted between 1990 and 1992 under sprinkler irrigation at the Research and Extension Center, Torrington, WY to determine the influence of mixed densities and durations of kochia and green foxtail interference in sugarbeet. Sugarbeet root yield and top weight generally decreased as densities of green foxtail and kochia increased whether alone or in combination. Reductions in sugarbeet root yield and above ground biomass from mixed densities of kochia and green foxtail were additive at the low and intermediate density but less than additive at the high density of either species. Sugarbeet root yield decreased as the duration of interference after sugarbeet emergence from a mixed density of kochia and green foxtail increased. Since sugarbeet plants were irrigated to avoid water stress and adequate nutrients were applied, it appears that kochia and green foxtail interfered with sugarbeet primarily for light, based on light and height measurements. Season-long as well as duration of interference did not show any significant effect on sucrose content. Based on regression analysis the lowest densities of kochia and green foxtail required to reduce root yield were approximately 0.3 and 0.06 plants/m of row, respectively. The minimum duration of time that 0.5 kochia and 3.0 green foxtail plants/m of row can interfere with sugarbeets before root yield is economically reduced was approximately 3.5 wk after sugarbeet emergence.

Cultivation timings and postemergence applications of AC 263,222 were evaluated for sicklepod and pitted morningglory control in soybean. Cultivation alone controlled each less than 35% season-long. A cultivation made 7 d after POST applications of AC 263,222 more consistently improved sicklepod and pitted morningglory control than a cultivation made 3 d before, immediately after, or 3 d after the POST application. Imazaquin PRE followed by 18 g ai/ha AC 263,222 controlled sicklepod 88% or more and pitted morningglory 83% or more two of three years. A cultivation made immediately after AC 263,222 POST resulted in reduced soybean yields in several instances compared to the same treatment without cultivation. A cultivation made 7 d after application of AC 263,222 increased soybean yields the most in several instances compared to all other timings.

Several herbicides control common ragweed postemergence in soybean. However, weed response may be altered if herbicides are tank-mixed and the choice of additive may also influence the degree of weed control. Imazethapyr and thifensulfuron could be tank-mixed with bentazon for broadleaf weed control and visual crop injury reduced compared to a bentazon plus acifluorfen tank-mix. Experiments determined common ragweed control with these herbicides and herbicide combinations when applied with various additives. In the greenhouse, bentazon at 560 g ai/ha reduced common ragweed dry weight 95 to 97%. Common ragweed control with imazethapyr at 35 g/ha increased by 13 and 7% when 28% urea ammonium nitrate was applied with nonionic surfactant or petroleum oil adjuvant, respectively. Tank-mixing imazethapyr with bentazon did not change dry weight of common ragweed compared with bentazon. Bentazon plus thifensulfuron plus nonionic surfactant required the addition of 28% urea ammonium nitrate to reduce dry weight of common ragweed comparable to that with bentazon. In field research, bentazon at 1120 g/ha reduced common ragweed dry weight 78 to 81%. Tank-mixing bentazon with thifensulfuron at 4.5 g/ha or imazethapyr at 71 or 35 g/ha reduced common ragweed dry weight at 14 d after treatment by 89 to 91%, thus enhancing control compared to each herbicide applied alone. Adding 28% urea ammonium nitrate to bentazon plus imazethapyr or bentazon plus thifensulfuron tank-mixes did not increase control compared to these treatments applied with either nonionic surfactant or petroleum oil adjuvant. By 28 d after treatment only imazethapyr at 35 or 71 g/ha plus 28% urea ammonium nitrate plus nonionic surfactant or petroleum oil adjuvant and bentazon plus imazethapyr tank-mixes provided 85% or more control of common ragweed in 1991, and only imazethapyr at 71 g/ha plus 28% urea ammonium nitrate plus petroleum oil adjuvant or imazethapyr at 71 g/ha plus bentazon provided greater than 78% common ragweed control in 1992. Soybean yield was not different from the handweeded control only where bentazon plus 71 g/ha of imazethapyr or acifluorfen at 560 g/ha was applied.

Various combinations of methods were evaluated for the control of ivyleaf morningglory growing in cotton. The combinations included chemicals incorporated to two depths or tanked-mixed as postemergence treatments and cultural methods that included in-row cultivation and hand weeding. The most effective combinations of methods included a herbicide such as cyanazine or prometryn in some treatments resulting in reduced ivyleaf morningglory population and improved cotton yields. Cultural methods without chemical assistance gave little or no control of ivyleaf morningglory based on weed populations and cotton yield. Statistically the best combinations had lint yields equal to the weed-free treatment, but the yields were reduced from 114 to 372 kg/ha. Also, most combination treatments had enough plant debris in the lint to reduce fiber grade.
