Environmental factors that affect the growth and development of onionweed were evaluated in order to predict its potential range and impact in the U.S. In controlled-environment experiments, onionweed achieved 60 to 100% of its maximum vegetative growth at temperatures ranging from 18/11 to 30/23 C day/night. The greatest biomass was produced at day temperatures of 18 or 24 C and night temperatures of 11 or 17 C. Leaf production and reproductive development were greatest at 18/11 C. Plants eventually flowered also at 18/17, 24/17, and 24/11 C but not in any regime with a 30 C-day or a 23 C-night. Flowering occurred earlier in 16-h photoperiods than in 16-h photoperiods than in 8-h photoperiods. Climatic analyses revealed no U.S. analogs of the principal Australian onionweed sites. Based on its environmental responses and its pattern of distribution as a weed in Australia, onionweed will likely remain confined to the southwestern U.S.

Field studies were conducted in 1993 and 1994 to evaluate broadleaf weed control in corn with the sulfonylurea herbicide CGA-152005, CGA-152005 was applied at 10 to 50 g ai/ha alone and in combination with 2,4-D, dicamba, or atrazine. No corn injury was observed either year. Metolachlor plus CGA-152005 controlled redroot pigweed, velvetleaf, and common cocklebur 95% or more in 1993 and 1994. Common lambsquarters and ivyleaf morningglory control was dependent on CGA-152005 rate, weed size at application, and growing conditions. In 1994, control of velvetleaf and ivyleaf morningglory with CGA-152005 at 10 or 20 g/ha was less when applied as a tank-mix with atrazine and dicamba compared with when it was applied alone, probably due to antagonism caused by the companion herbicide. Generally, corn yield was related to weed control.

Dry bean cultivars were evaluated for suppression of late-season weed emergence near Scottsbluff, NE in 1993 and 1994. The 12 cultivars differed in plant canopy architecture and the amount of light intercepted. In 1993, the vine growth habit of Pinto ‘D-84354’ provided a more dense canopy and more yellow foxtail suppression than Pinto ‘RS-101’ that had an upright growth habit. Growing season also influenced plant canopy and late season weed emergence. Cooler temperatures in 1993 resulted in a less dense Navy ‘Mayflower’ canopy which provided less redroot pigweed suppression than warmer conditions in 1994 that resulted in a more dense crop canopy. No difference in weed suppression was observed among cultivars for common lambsquarters, common purslane, and hairy nightshade.

Paclobutrazol and flurprimidol were evaluated for suppression of a perennial subspecies of annual bluegrass in a creeping bentgrass green. Three applications of paclobutrazol in the spring (Mar. 17, Apr. 17, and May 17) followed by three applications in the fall (Oct. 2, Nov. 2, and Nov. 30) suppressed the perennial subspecies ≥ 72% at 3 wk after the final treatment. However, suppression was reduced to ≤ 57% by 4 mo after the final fall application. Flurprimidol applied in three spring and three fall applications did not suppress the perennial subspecies as effectively as paclobutrazol. Suppression was ≤ 47% at 3 wk after the final flurprimidol treatment and was only ≤ 20% by mid-March. Neither chemical injured creeping bentgrass greater than 20% in the spring. However, leaf discoloration injury from the initial October application ranged from 26 to 30% for paclobutrazol in 1993 and 21 to 28% for flurprimidol in 1994. When injury occurred in October it was temporary and the creeping bentgrass recovered within 3 to 4 wk. Paclobutrazol and flurprimidol applied in November did not injure creeping bentgrass.

Broadleaf weed control and tulip, daffodil, and iris response to alachlor, dithiopyr, diuron, isoxaben, napropamide, oryzalin, oxadiazon, oxyfluorfen, pendimethalin, pronamide, and thiazopyr applied preemergence were evaluated. All herbicides controlled broadleaf weeds for five months after application, but control with oxyfluorfen, pendimethalin, alachlor, pronamide, and napropamide decreased six months after application. The greatest weed control was with oxadiazon, isoxaben, thiazopyr, dithiopyr, and diuron, whereas the least weed control was with napropamide and alachlor. In general, tulip was more sensitive to herbicides than daffodil and iris. All herbicides injured tulips at early growth stages but bulb yield of tulip was reduced only by oxadiazon, oxyfluorfen at 0.28 kg ai/ha, pronamide, and dithiopyr. Tulip flower quality was reduced only by oxadiazon, oxyfluorfen at 0.28 lb/ha, and pronamide. Daffodil and iris were tolerant to thiazopyr, isoxaben, pronamide, alachlor, oryzalin, napropamide, and diuron.

A two-year experiment was conducted to determine if tank-mixes of postemergence (POST) herbicides would consistently control large crabgrass and goosegrass in common bermudagrass turf compared to herbicide alone treatments. Tank-mixes of MSMA plus quinclorac at 2.2 + 0.6 kg/ha effectively controlled large crabgrass (≥ 81%) for 10 to 11 weeks during 1993 and 1994. The control from MSMA plus dithiopyr at 2.2 + 0.3 kg/ha was higher during this period than when each herbicide was applied alone at the same rate. There was no increase in large crabgrass control from tank-mixes of MSMA and diclofop applied in a single application, when compared with two applications of MSMA applied at 2.2 kg/ha. Goosegrass control at 9 wk after tank-mixed treatments of MSMA (2.2 kg/ha) and diclofop (≥ 0.3 kg/ha) in 1994 was lower (12 to 28%) than when diclofop at 1.1 kg/ha was applied alone (85%). Tank-mixes of MSMA with quinclorac or dithiopyr did not control goosegrass. In general, common bermudagrass injury was no higher from herbicide combinations than when each was applied alone. An exception occurred at 1 wk after treatment in 1993 when common bermudagrass injury was higher from tank-mixes of MSMA plus diclofop at 2.2 + 1.1 kg/ha, than when either herbicide was applied alone.

Field studies were initiated in 1985 and 1986 to evaluate the effects of dalapon, glyphosate, imazapyr, and sulfometuron applications to established cogongrass alone or in combination with either mowing or discing. Mowing and discing treatments were performed 4 mo before and 8 months after the herbicide treatments in the 1985 experiments and 2 months before and 7 months after the herbicide treatment in the 1986 experiments. When applied alone, glyphosate at 3.4 kg ai/ha and imazapyr at 0.8 kg ai/ha caused the greatest reduction in shoot and rhizome biomass about 2 yr after application. However, the rhizome infestation was reduced only 43% by glyphosate and 51% by imazapyr, as compared to the nontreated control. With no herbicide, two mowing or discing were generally more effective than a single mowing or discing treatment. The reduction in shoot and rhizome biomass for two mowing without herbicide was 65 and 38% and for two discing, 73 and 66%, respectively. Acceptable (> 80%) levels of cogongrass control, based on reductions in rhizome biomass occurred only when applications of dalapon, glyphosate, or imazapyr were made in combination with two discing despite the fact that mowing before and after treatment reduced shoot biomass by at least 89%.

Controlled environmental chamber experiments were conducted for a 14-d incubation period to measure the effect of temperature, light, light intensity, water potential, and pH on eclipta seed germination. In full light, seed germinated over a range of 10 to 35 C; however, germination was highest at 83% at 35 C. Seeds were strongly photoblastic with none germinating in the dark. Seeds germinated in light intensities between 6 and 100% of full light. Seeds germinated 78 to 88% in water potentials of 0.0, −0.1, and −0.2 MPa. In distilled water (pH ∼ 5.5) and a buffered solution pH 6 and 7, seeds germinated 85 to 89%; however, some seeds germinated in a buffered solution pH range of 5 to 8. After the first 14-d incubation period, ungerminated seeds were transferred to distilled water and incubated at 35 C in full light for 4 to 6 d as a second incubation period. Seeds germinated 89 to 96% after this second incubation period when first incubation was at temperatures 10 to 35 C in full light or darkness, light intensities 0 to 100% of full light, water potentials 0.0 to −0.8 MPa, and buffered solution pH levels of 5.5 to 7.

Field experiments were conducted to determine the effect of CGA184927 rate, weed growth stage, and tank mixes with various broadleaf herbicides on the control of green foxtail and wild oat in spring wheat. CGA 184927 controlled green foxtail and wild oat equally well when applied at the 2- to 3- or 4- to 5-leaf stages. Green foxtail and wild oat were controlled at similar rates of CGA 184927 but the application rate giving > 90% control ranged from 22 to 90 g/ha over locations and years, indicating that CGA 184927 efficacy is sensitive to environmental conditions. CGA 184927 in tank mixtures was compatible with bromoxynil, clopyralid, and 2,4-D ester. However, tank mixing with metsulfuron or dicamba reduced activity on green foxtail and wild oat. Broadleaf herbicide activity on kochia and redroot pigweed was not reduced when such herbicides were tank-mixed with CGA 184927. Spring wheat tolerated 120 g/ha of CGA 184927. CGA 184927 provides growers with another herbicide option to control green foxtail and wild oat in wheat.

Field experiments evaluated barnyardgrass, broadleaf signalgrass, and rhizomatous johnsongrass control with clethodim applied with Agri-Dex® crop oil concentrate at 1.0% v/v, the adjuvant Dash® at 1.0% v/v, the methylated seed oil Sun-It II® at 1.0% v/v, a blend of silicone surfactant plus methylated seed oil (Dyne-Amic® at 0.5% v/v) or nonionic surfactant (Kinetic® HV at 0.125% v/v), two silicone surfactants (Sylgard® 309 and Silwet L-77® surfactant) at 0.125% v/v, two other conventional nonionic surfactants (Latron AG-98™ and Induce®) at 0.25% v/v, and the acidified soya phospholipid LI-700®. When compared with the conventional nonionic or silicone-based surfactants and LI-700, clethodim at 70 g ai/ha controlled barnyardgrass more effectively when applied with Dash or Sun-It II. Broadleaf signalgrass and rhizomatous johnsongrass were controlled more effectively when clethodim was applied with Agri-Dex, Dash, Sun-It II, or Dyne-Amic. Clethodim at 70 g/ha applied with Dash or Sun-It II controlled grasses equally or greater than clethodim at 140 g/ha.

Seedling emergence was characterized for five weeds that infest summer annual crops in the central Great Plains as affected by crop canopy or tillage. The study was established in winter wheat stubble between 1987 and 1990, with seedling emergence recorded weekly between April 1 and November 1. Kochia emerged primarily from early April to late June, whereas green foxtail, wild-proso millet, and redroot pigweed began emerging in late May and continued until August. Volunteer wheat emerged throughout the growing season. Tillage did not affect the emergence pattern of any species, but the numbers of kochia, volunteer wheat, and green foxtail seedlings were increased in no-till. Conversely, wild-proso millet emergence was greater with tillage. Only volunteer wheat's emergence was affected by crop canopy, as fall emergence of volunteer wheat was more than three times greater in corn than in proso millet.

This study characterized seedling emergence of downy brome from August to early December over a 6-yr period. Seedlings were counted weekly in quadrats established in winter wheat stubble at Akron, CO. Seedling emergence varied among years, which was caused by erratic seasonal precipitation. Producers delay planting of winter wheat to reduce downy brome density in the crop, but in only 1 yr out of 6 would producers have benefited from this control strategy. Furthermore, delayed planting has negative crop consequences: less grain yield and more susceptibility to plant diseases and wind erosion because of less fall plant growth. Because fall precipitation is erratic in the semiarid Great Plains, other control strategies, such as nitrogen placement and increased seeding rates of winter wheat, would be more effective for downy brome management, yet not detrimental to winter wheat production.

A 3-yr study investigated highbush blackberry control in bahiagrass turf using selective herbicides. Triclopyr applied alone at ≤ 0.56 kg/ha and in combination with other herbicides provided best (75 to 95%) control for up to 52 wk after treatment with minimal damage to bahiagrass turf. Triclopyr formulations (3A vs 4EC) provided similar highbush blackberry control and bahiagrass tolerance. The addition of either 2,4-D, dicamba, hexazinone, or sulfometuron to triclopyr provided slightly better blackberry control, but increased bahiagrass turf damage. Fluroxypyr applied at 0.14 to 0.28 kg/ha provided 60 to 80% control of highbush blackberry 12 WAT. Glyphosate and glufosinate treatments provided unacceptable highbush blackberry control and/or unacceptable bahiagrass turf injury. The addition of oxadiazon for residual control of subsequent highbush blackberry emergence was ineffective.

Experiments were conducted at three locations in Louisiana from 1992 to 1994 to evaluate broadleaf weed control with sulfentrazone. Sulfentrazone at 0.42 kg ai/ha applied PPI or PRE provided at least 93% control of entireleaf morningglory in all years at all locations, which was greater than control with metribuzin PRE. Prickly sida control with sulfentrazone ranged from 83 to 94%, which was equal to or greater than control with metribuzin. Hemp sesbania and sicklepod control with sulfentrazone was unacceptable (≤75%) regardless of application method and generally was lower than control with metribuzin. Greater than 90% control of smellmelon and hophornbeam copperleaf was observed with all treatments. Minor but transient soybean injury was noted at one location in one year. Soybean yields following sulfentrazone PRE at St. Joseph were greater than yields with metribuzin as a result of the general increase in broadleaf weed control.

Sustainable rangeland management will require successional strategies to deal with the expanding weed problem. These strategies must be consistent with the view that plant communities are dynamic and technology is used to enhance the natural processes and mechanisms that direct vegetation change. The goal is to shift the dynamics toward a desired plant community. A unified conceptual model is necessary to direct the development and application of successional weed management systems. We propose using a resource management model as a conceptual basis for successional weed management. This model is based on the primary causes of succession: site availability, differential species availability, and differential species performance. This model provides the mechanistic framework necessary for developing successional weed management systems and it is meant to enhance communication among rangeland weed managers and scientists.

Studies were conducted from 1993 through 1995 to determine broomrape control from imazethapyr applied to pea seeds. Soaking seeds for 1 to 10 min in 0.0001% to 1% imazethapyr (Pursuit-10) solutions or coating seeds with imazethapyr at 0.025 to 0.30 mg/g (herbicide/seed, equivalent to 5 to 60 g/ha for a seeding rate of 200 kg/ha) did not affect seed germination or crop emergence and growth. Broomrape control with imazethapyr applied by coating seed at 0.1 to 0.2 mg/g (herbicide/seed, 20 to 40 g/ha) or by soaking seeds for 5 min in 0.1% to 1% imazethapyr solution was from 75 to 80% and 50 to 70%, respectively. Pea biomass and seed yield increased, compared to broomrape-infested nontreated control, when pea seeds were treated with imazethapyr and imazapyr at 5 g/ha was applied late postemergence, as a result of the excellent broomrape control.

Decision making in weed control is complex and time-consuming. Moreover, the structure of the available information does not facilitate the comparison of different herbicides. Indeed, information format can be the limiting factor in the performance of sophisticated computer programs intended to supply appropriate advice on weed control treatments. A relational database for decision support on chemical weed control has been developed. It uses a detailed structure by subdividing the information where possible. The database includes programs for entering, updating, and printing data, as well as programs for retrieving information and giving treatment advice. The information access on herbicides is organized around searches based on a specific crop and multiple weed species at their respective growth stages. Optimization of the selected herbicides is carried out and supplies the lowest number of herbicides controlling all the chosen weeds. Information on critical parameters for herbicide application such as varietal restrictions, rotational crops, and compatibility with other products is also interactively available.

Recently, roundleaved mallow, redroot pigweed, and annual smartweed species have become problems for flax producers in the Canadian prairies. The use of thifensulfuron to enhance weed control with commonly used herbicide mixtures was tested at Indian Head, SK and Morden, MB. Visible crop injury and reduced height, yield, and quality occurred at rates as low as 0.5–1.0 g/ha. Improved control of broadleaf weeds was not consistent and antagonism of grassy weed control with sethoxydim occurred.

Field and greenhouse experiments were conducted to investigate the influence of two cationic alkylamine surfactants, three nonionic surfactants, and ammonium sulfate on the performance of glyphosate (isopropylamine salt) against quackgrass. In the field experiments, the reinfestation of quackgrass in the year after treatment was zero or negligible in all plots that received the recommended rate of glyphosate (1.44 kg ae/ha). At one-fourth of the recommended rate (0.36 kg ae/ha) the glyphosate-adjuvant combinations also severely inhibited the reinfestation of quackgrass. At the low herbicide rate and without ammonium sulfate, lipophilic surfactants were less effective than more hydrophilic surfactants. In the greenhouse experiments, the glyphosate doses giving 50% response (ED50) were determined. Ranking of the surfactants according to the ED50 for glyphosate demonstrated a similar result to that observed in the field experiment. Ammonium sulfate added to the glyphosate-surfactant combinations reduced the ED50 for glyphosate 5-fold. The field and greenhouse experiments demonstrated that two hydrophilic nonionic surfactants enhance glyphosate efficacy against quackgrass to the same extent as the hydrophilic cationic tallowamine surfactant. These two nonionic surfactants have a relatively low toxicity to non-target organisms and may substitute the more toxic alkylamine surfactants.
