In 1884 a triumvirate of Austro-German music historians, Friedrich Chrysander, Philipp Spitta, and Guido Adler, founded the first journal of musicology,1 the newest fledgeling amongst the sciences,2 namely, the Vierteljahrsschrift für Musikwissenschaft [Musicology Quarterly]. The first issue opened with a paper written by Adler, defining the scope, method and aim of the new science. This proved to be a potent formative influence on the establishment and development of the academic discipline of musicology in Europe and elsewhere, notably the United States of America, an influence that is strongly felt to the present day. Thus, in the New Grove Dictionary of Music and Musicians (1980: s.v. “Musicology,” by Vincent Duckles, et al.), its importance is made evident in that it is summarised as the still extant model of musicology.

Relations between language and music have traditionally been addressed at two distinct levels of discourse. One is phenomenal and often taxonomic, addressing the boundaries of speech and song, prosody and intonation, text and tune, paralanguage and vocables, sprechgesang and sprechstimme, and motivation toward signifier or signified. The other level is analytical and sometimes abstract, addressing the adaptation of phonological and syntactic linguistic models to features of musical structure (a review and critique is Feld 1974).

Les réflexions qui suivent résultent de deux types d'interrogations. Tout d'abord, problème familier aux ethnomusicologues, comment faut-il et comment peut-on utiliser les propos de l'autochtone parlant de musique lorsqu'on se propose de faire l'analyse d'un corpus? Et par analyse, nous n'entendons pas un vague discours impressionniste sur la musique, mais, comme nous y reviendrons à la fin, à la fois l'utilisation de traits définissant les unités découpées selon des méthodes rigoureuses et reproductibles, et l'établissement de règles qui en décrivent le fonctionnement. Dans le même esprit, quel statut devons-nous accorder, dans la musique occidentale, aux propos du compositeur, de l'interprète ou de l'auditeur lorsque le musicologue se propose de rendre compte du processus créateur, de la conception d'une interprétation ou de la perception d'une oeuvre?1 A notre sens, il n'y a aucune raison d'opérer ici, quant au status du discours sur la musique, une distinction entre musique de tradition orale et musique “savante”, même si nos réflexions à propos de ce problème dans la musique occidentale ont été inspirées par l'expérience des ethnomusicologues (Merriam, Blacking, Zemp, Feld). En d'autres termes, que se passe-t-il lorsqu'on s'avise de considérer les propos de Wagner ou de Boulez comme ceux d'un Inuk ou d'un Pygmée?

Wenn man über Musik in intermodaler ästhetischer Kommunikation sprechen will, so gehört Sprache (in all ihren aus musikologischer Sicht wichtigen Aspekten) unbedingt zum Thema: nicht nur, weil Musik und Sprache auf einem gemeinsamen materiellen Substrat (modulierten Schallwellen) basieren, nicht nur, weil sie mit demselben Sinnesorgan aufgenommen bzw. analysiert werden und mit dem gleichen physiologischen Erzeugungsapparat hervorgebracht werden können (Ohr und menschliche Stimme), auch nicht nur, weil sie in älteren (vormenschlichen) Kommunikationssystemen mit hoher Wahrscheinlichkeit gemeinsame Wurzeln haben und weil beide zu ihrer Herausbildung und Ausformung die Entwicklung des beziehenden (relativen) Hörens benötigen, sondern vor allem, weil sie—aufgrund dieser Gemeinsamkeiten—in der Geschichte ihrer Existenz zahlreiche Kontaktzonen und Beziehungen ausbildeten, auf vielfältige Weise ‘Symbiosen’ eingingen und sich dabei gegenseitig beeinflußten und veränderten.

Communication essentially involves a language or a symbolism whether this be a spoken dialect, a morse code signal or a chain of musical sounds. When we are expressing ourselves in language and other signs, our words, phrases and utterances may be said to form a pattern—a pattern of relationships. Much of this patterning does not rest in the definition and choice of units alone, but in its whole syntax. Defined by Carnap (1929), syntactics aims at all the purely formal aspects of language; that is, anything concerning signs and their orderings, but having no reference to designate real or imagined.

Turkish political influence in Romania from the 16th Century until 1881 is well documented. Historical records also provide numerous references to Turkish music in Romania, which together with certain survivals in the form of instruments and musical forms serve to delineate the broader outlines of the potential area of influence of Turkish music on certain Romanian musical practices. In this presentation I shall attempt to gather together some of the surviving historical evidence for Turkish influence in Romania and subsequently to describe some previously undocumented surviving musical practices.
