The signatures of small-scale features in the solar atmosphere are severely degraded by limited angular resolution of the observations. The Deep Solar ALMA Neural Network Estimator (Deep-SANNE) is trained towards synthetic observables from 3D magnetohydrodynamic simulations to recognize the small-scale dynamic features in data at limited observational resolution, and provide maps of correction factors across the field of view. The correction factors can be used to acquire deconvolved refined images with significantly improved brightness temperature contrasts, where the strength of brightening events are reproduced to an accuracy of 94.0% instead of the 43.7% at observational resolution. Deep-SANNE can also provide masks of the most probable locations with large accuracies, and estimations on the radiation formation heights in connection to the small-scale features. The Deep-SANNE refined images and estimations of radiation formation heights allow for larger accuracy and meaningful analysis of solar ALMA data.

The formation of multiples has seen some significant progress over the past years mainly due to the advent and the expansion of high-angular resolution facilities. Star-forming regions are the laboratories where massive stars can be caught right after their formation phase. Still, the observational constraints and the properties of young multiple systems are poorly documented. These proceedings contain recent results about the multiplicity properties of six young O-type stars in the M17 star-forming region, observed by the means of near-IR interferometric observations, which have provided insight into the origin of massive close binaries in a cluster environment.

We introduce Hypercat, a large set of 2-d AGN torus images computed with the state-of-the-art clumpy radiative transfer code Clumpy. The images are provided as a 9-dimensional hypercube, in addition to a smaller hypercube of corresponding projected dust distribution maps. Hypercat also comprises a software suite for easy use of the hypercubes, quantification of image morphology, and simulation of synthetic observations with single-dish telescopes, interferometers, and Integral Field Units. We apply Hypercat to NGC 1068 and find that it can be spatially resolved in Near- and Mid-IR, for the first time with single-dish apertures, on the upcoming generation of 25–40m class telescopes. We also find that clumpy AGN torus models within a range of the parameter space can explain on scales of several parsec the recently reported polar elongation of MIR emission in several sources, while not upending basic assumptions about AGN unification.

The Sun is our dynamic host star due to its magnetic fields causing plentiful of activity in its atmosphere. From high energetic flares and coronal mass ejections (CMEs) to lower energetic phenomena such as jets and fibrils. Thus, it is of crucial importance to learn about formation and evolution of solar magnetic fields. These fields cover a wide range of spatial and temporal scales, starting on the larger end with active regions harbouring complex sunspots, via isolated pores, down to the smallest yet resolved elements – so-called magnetic bright points (MBPs). Here, we revisit the various manifestations of solar magnetic fields by the largest European solar telescope in operation, the 1.5-meter GREGOR telescope. We show images from the High-resolution Fast Imager (HiFI) and spectropolarimetric data from the GREGOR Infrared Spectrograph (GRIS). Besides, we outline resolved convective features inside the larger structures – so-called light-bridges occurring on large to mid-sized scales.

Observations of dense stellar systems such as globular clusters (GCs) are limited in resolution by the optical aberrations induced by atmospheric turbulence (atmospheric seeing). At the example of holographic speckle imaging, we now study, to which degree image reconstruction algorithms are able to remove residual aberrations from a partial adaptive optics (AO) correction, such as delivered from ground-layer AO (GLAO) systems. Simultaneously, we study, how such algorithms benefit from being applied to pre-corrected instead of natural point-spread functions (PSFs). We find that using partial AO corrections already lowers the demands on the holography reference star by ∼3 mag, what makes more fields accessible for this technique, and also that the discrete integration times may be chosen about 2–3× longer, since the effective wavefront evolution is slowed down by removing the perturbation power.

The carbon-rich AGB star V Hya is believed to be in the very brief transition phase between the AGB and a planetary nebula (PN). Using HST/STIS, we previously found a high-velocity (> 200 kms−1) jet or blob of gas ejected only a few years ago from near (< 0.3 arcsec or 150 AU) the star (Sahai et al. 2003, Sahai et al. 2016). From multi-epoch high-resolution spectroscopy we found time-variable high-velocity absorption features in the CO 4.6 μm vibration-rotation lines of V Hya (Sahai et al. 2009). Modeling shows that these are produced in compact clumps of outflowing gas with significant radial temperature gradients consistent with strong shocks. Here, we present very high resolution (∼100 milliarcsecond) imaging of the central region of V Hya using the coronagraphic mode of the Gemini Planet Imager (GPI) in the 1 μm band and spectral-spatial imaging of 4.6 μm CO 1-0 transitions using the Phoenix spectrometer. We report the detection of a compact central dust disk from GPI, and molecular emission from the Phoenix observations at relatively larger scales. We discuss models for the central structures in V Hya, in particular disks and outflows, using these and complementary images in the optical and radio.

The dramatic transformation of the spherical outflows of AGB stars into the extreme aspherical geometries seen during the planetary nebula (PN) phase is widely believed to be linked to binarity and is likely driven by the associated production of fast jets and central disks/torii. We first briefly summarize results from the imaging surveys of large samples of young PNe and pre-PNe with HST which show that almost all objects have bipolar, multipolar and elliptical morphologies, with widespread presence of point-symmetric structure. We describe a relatively new technique of using UV photometic observations of large AGB star samples to search for binarity and associated accretion activity, and follow-up studies using UV spectroscopy and X-ray observations. We present results from studies of individual objects in transition to the PN phase, highlighting observational techniques being used to determine jet properties that can constrain the accretion modes that power these jets.

Planet formation takes place in the gaseous and dusty disks that surround young stars, known as protoplanetary disks. With the advent of sensitive observations and together with developments in theory, our field is making rapid progress in understanding how the evolution of protoplanetary disks takes place, from its inception to the end result of a fully-formed planetary system. In this review, I discuss how observations that trace both the dust and gas components of these systems inform us about their evolution, mass budget, and chemistry. Particularly, the process of disk evolution and planet formation will leave an imprint on the distribution of solid particles at different locations in a protoplanetary disk, and I focus on recent observational results at high angular resolution in the sub-millimeter regime, which have revealed a variety of substructures present in these objects.

The international collaboration of VLBI in East Asia (EA) is rapidly growing. Besides the recent successful operation of the KVN and VERA Array (KaVA), the effort of joint VLBI operation in EA is being expanded into China. This forms the East Asian VLBI Network (EAVN), which offers detailed imaging and monitoring of the innermost regions of relativistic jets at cm wavelengths and thus complementary to the Event Horizon Telescope operated at mm wavelengths. In this contribution we present some of the ongoing KaVA/EAVN studies for the inner jets of the two important nearby radio galaxies 3C84 and M87. The observations have revealed detailed kinematics for the parsec-to-subparsec-scale structures of these jets. Future regular observations with the East-Asia-To-Italy-Nearly-Global (EATING) VLBI, a joint effort between EAVN and the Italian VLBI Network, will enable us to resolve and regularly monitor the innermost regions of nearby AGN jets at tens of micro-arcsecond scales.

Measurements of current rates of core-collapse supernovæ (CCSNe) suffer from significant uncertainties, probably due to the large fraction of CCSNe that explode in crowded regions which have bright background emission and significant dust extinction. Conventional optical (seeing-limited) SN surveys generally fail to detect them, but including them is crucial to the accurate determination of CCSN rates. Project SUNBIRD aims to tighten the present constraints on the fraction of CCSNe that are missed by conventional SN surveys. We are monitoring more than 25 dusty luminous infrared galaxies that are actively star-forming, for evidence of dust-obscured CCSNe, in an effort to characterise the population of CCSNes exploding in those nuclear regions of dusty LIRGs. We observe in the near-infrared, which is less affected by dust extinction compared to the optical; we are using Gemini South and Keck, and we make use of state-of-the-art laser guide-star adaptive optics instruments to achieve a spatial resolution <0’.1, which is sufficient to resolve close to the galactic nucleus.

During the project’s first year we discovered three CCSNe and one candidate one, with nuclear offsets as small as 200 pc, as cited in the poster. Aggregating the new discoveries with the CCSNe found in previous programmes employing AO, we compared the distribution of nuclear offsets of AO CCSN discoveries with all other documented CCSNe discovered in LIRGs. The poster showed that our method is singularly effective at uncovering CCSNe in the nuclear regions of LIRGs, and that while optical surveys dominate SNe discoveries far from a galaxy’s centre, near infra-red AO observations are needed to probe the regions within 1 kpc of the nucleus.

In this proceeding, we summarize the key science goals and reference design for a next-generation Very Large Array (ngVLA) that is envisaged to operate in the 2030s. The ngVLA is an interferometric array with more than 10 times the sensitivity and spatial resolution of the current VLA and ALMA, that will operate at frequencies spanning ~1.2 – 116 GHz, thus lending itself to be highly complementary to ALMA and the SKA1. As such, the ngVLA will tackle a broad range of outstanding questions in modern astronomy by simultaneously delivering the capability to: unveil the formation of Solar System analogues; probe the initial conditions for planetary systems and life with astrochemistry; characterize the assembly, structure, and evolution of galaxies from the first billion years to the present; use pulsars in the Galactic center as fundamental tests of gravity; and understand the formation and evolution of stellar and supermassive blackholes in the era of multi-messenger astronomy.

Ring−like sources of 6.7 GHz methanol maser emission were discovered a decade ago with the European VLBI Network. In the past years we have been incessantly working to understand the nature of these rings. In general, the methanol rings do not coincide with H II regions nor they show 22 GHz water maser emission. Here, we present a proper motion study over a time baseline up to 10.5 years for the first sub-sample of methanol maser rings. Our findings suggest that in three targets G23.207−00.377, G23.389+00.185, and G23.657−00.127, such rings form in outflows or even in winds close to the central sources, and the masers trace slow proper motions of a few km s−1 typically.

In luminous and ultraluminous infrared galaxies (U/LIRGs), the infall of gas into the central regions strongly enhances the star formation rate (SFR), especially within the nuclear regions which have also large amounts of interstellar dust. Within these regions SFRs of several tens to hundreds of solar masses per year ought to give rise to core-collapse supernova (SN) rates up to 1-2 SNe every year per galaxy. However, the current SN surveys, almost exclusively being ground-based seeing-limited and working at optical wavelengths, have been blinded by the interstellar dust and contrast issues therein. Thus the properties and rates of SNe in the nuclear environments of the most prolific SN factories in the Universe have remained largely unexplored. Here, we present results from high angular resolution observations of nearby LIRGs at infrared and radio wavelengths much less affected by the effects of extinction and lack of resolution hampering the optical searches.

We summarize work on the central parsec of the Galactic center based on imaging and spectroscopic observations at the Keck and Gemini telescopes. These observations include stellar positions in two dimension and the velocity in three dimensions. Spectroscopic observations also enables measurements of the physical properties of individual stars, such as the spectral type and in some cases the effective temperature, metallicity, and surface gravity. These observations show a complex stellar population with a young (4-6 Myr) compact star cluster in the central 0.5 pc embedded in in an older and much more massive nuclear star cluster. Surprisingly, the old late-type giants do not show a cusp profile as long been expected from theoretical work. The majority of the stars have higher than solar metallicity, with only about 6% of the stars having [M/Fe] < −0.5, which is consistent with an origin from the MW disk.

Because of the unique observational challenges -extreme crowding and extinction- any existing large-scale near-infrared (NIR) imaging data on the Galactic Center (GC) are limited by either one, or a combination, of the following: saturation, lack of sensitivity, too low angular resolution, or lack of multi-wavelength coverage. To overcome this situation, we are currently carrying out a sensitive, 0.2” resolution JHK imaging survey of the Galactic Centre with HAWK-I/VLT. Thanks to holographic imaging, we achieve a similar resolution than with HST/WFC, but can cover also the long NIR, beyond 2 micrometers, which is essential to deal with extinction. Our survey is supported by an ESO Large Programme and will provide photometrically accurate (few percent uncertainty for H < 18 stars), high-angular resolution, NIR data for an area of several 1000 pc2, a more than ten-fold increase compared to the current state of affairs. Here we present an overview and first results.

We compare in a systematic way spectrometric, photometric and mid-infrared (VLTI/MIDI) interferometric measurements with different types of model atmospheres. Self-consistent dynamic model atmospheres in particular were used to interpret in a consistent way the dynamic behavior of gas and dust. The results underline how the joint use of different kind of observations, as photometry, spectroscopy and interferometry, is essential to understand the atmospheres of pulsating C-rich AGB stars. The sample of C-rich stars discussed in this work provides crucial constraints for the atmospheric structure.

Started its regular, daily operational phase in 2011, by the occasion of the Symp264 in the XXVII IAU GA at Rio de Janeiro, the results so far obtained show that the Heliometer of the Observatorio Nacional fulfilled its planed performance of single measurement to the level of few tens of milli-arcsecond, freely pivoting around the heliolatitudes without systematic deviations or error enhancement. We present and discuss the astrometric additions required on ground based astronomic programs. We also discuss instrumental and observations terms, namely the constancy of the basic heliometric angle, against which the measurements are made, and the independence to meteorological and pointing conditions.

The Solar Orbiter is the next solar physics mission of the European Space Agency, ESA, in collaboration with NASA, with a launch planned in 2018. The spacecraft is designed to approach the Sun to within 0.28 AU at perihelion of a highly eccentric orbit. The proximity with the Sun will also allow its observation at uniformly high resolution at EUV and visible wavelengths. Such observations are central for learning more about the magnetic coupling of the solar atmosphere. At a later phase in the mission the spacecraft will leave the ecliptic and study the enigmatic poles of the Sun from a heliographic latitude of up to 33○.

A central instrument of Solar Orbiter} is the Polarimetric and Helioseismic Imager, SO/PHI. It will do full Stokes imaging in the Landé g = 2.5 Fe I 617.3 nm line. It is composed of two telescopes, a full-disk telescope and a high-resolution telescope, that will allow observations at a resolution as high as 200 km on the solar surface. SO/PHI will also be the first solar polarimeter to leave the Sun-Earth line, opening up new possibilities, such as stereoscopic polarimetry (besides stereoscopic imaging of the photosphere and stereoscopic helioseismology). Finally, SO/PHI will have a unique view of the solar poles, allowing not just more precise and exact measurements of the polar field than possible so far, but also enabling us to follow the dynamics of individual magnetic features at high latitudes and to determine solar surface and sub-surface flows right up to the poles.

In this paper an introduction to the science goals and the capabilities of SO/PHI will be given, as well as a brief overview of the instrument and of the current status of its development.

The nearby spiral galaxy M81 has a low-luminosity Active Galactic Nucleus in its center with a core and a one-sided curved jet, dubbed M81*, that is barely resolved with VLBI. To derive basic parameters such as the length of the jet, its orientation and curvature, the usual method of model-fitting with point sources and elliptical Gaussians may not always be the most appropriate one. We are developing Fourier-plane models for such sources, in particular an asymmetric triangle model to fit the extensive set of VLBI data of M81* in the u-v plane. This method may have an advantage over conventional ones in extracting information close to the resolution limit to provide us with a more comprehensive picture of the structure and evolution of the jet. We report on preliminary results.

We present some new and interesting results on the complementarity between asteroseismology and interferometry, the detection of non-radial pulsations in massive stars and the possibility for evidencing differential rotation on the surface of Bn stars. We also discuss the curretn interferometric facilities, namely the Very Large Telescope Interferometer (VLTI)/AMBER, VLTI/MIDI, VLTI/PIONIER within the European Southern Observatory (ESO) context and the Center for High Angular Resolution Astronomy (CHARA) array with their current limitations. The forthcoming second-generation VLTI instruments GRAVITY and MATISSE are presented as well as the FRIEND prototype in the visible spectral domain and an update of the Navy Precision Optical Interferometer (NPOI). A conclusion is presented with a special emphasis on the foreseen difficulties for a third generation of interferometric instruments within the (budget limited) Extremely Large Telescope framework and the need for strong science cases to push a future visible beam combiner.
