Field experiments were conducted at East Lansing and Clarksville, MI, to evaluate the efficacy of imazamox, imazethapyr, and CGA-277476 plus quizalofop applied postemergence in wide- (76-cm) and narrow- (19-cm) row soybean. Soybean injury from all herbicides was minimal 14 days after treatment (DAT), except for CGA-277476 at 79 g ai/ha plus 69 g ai/ha quizalofop, which caused 30% soybean injury at the Clarksville location. Adding 4 g ai/ha CGA-248757 to 65 g ai/ha CGA-277476 plus quizalofop reduced common ragweed control, but increased redroot pigweed control in wide rows compared to 79 g ai/ha CGA-277476 plus quizalofop. Imazamox at 35 and 45 g ai/ha provided greater common ragweed and common lambsquarters control than imazethapyr at 70 g ai/ha 28 DAT. All herbicide treatments controlled velvetleaf. Common ragweed and common lambsquarters control by all herbicide treatments was enhanced in narrow- compared to wide-row soybean 56 DAT as was redroot pigweed control by CGA-277476 treatments. Total weed biomass and soybean yield in wide-row soybean treated with imazamox at 45 g/ha was not different from the hand-weeded control. In narrow-row soybean, soybean yield was equal to the hand-weeded control for 35 and 45 g/ha imazamox and 70 g/ha imazethapyr. Postemergence herbicide treatments resulted in less weed biomass and greater soybean yield in narrow- compared to wide-row soybean.

Glyphosate and adjuvant combinations were applied to rhizome johnsongrass at vegetative and reproductive growth stages to evaluate control and rainfastness in field studies. Using a rainfall simulator delivering 1.3 cm of water in 15 min, plots received either no rainfall or rainfall 15 or 60 min after glyphosate was applied at 2.1 kg ai/ha in combination with the nonionic surfactants Kinetic® HV at 0.25% (v/v) or Induce® at 1.0% (v/v) or the silicone surfactant Break-Thru® at 0.125% (v/v). Regardless of adjuvant, rainfall 15 or 60 min after application reduced johnsongrass control compared with no rainfall. Johnsongrass control 14 d after treatment at the reproductive stage was at least 89% with no rainfall, but no more than 53 and 65% with rainfall at 15 and 60 min, respectively. Based on initial weed control, adjuvants did not consistently improve rainfastness. Johnsongrass regrowth did not occur when glyphosate was applied with either adjuvant. In contrast, for glyphosate applied to johnsongrass in the vegetative stage, addition of Break-Thru improved control over Induce at both 15- and 60-min rainfall timings in one of two experiments. With no rainfall, addition of Kinetic HV and Break-Thru increased johnsongrass control in only one experiment. For application at the vegetative stage, johnsongrass regrowth averaged across rainfall timings was no more than 10%. In other field experiments, glyphosate at 1.4 kg/ha plus nonionic surfactants, silicone surfactant, crop oil concentrate, methylated seed oil, or a blend of silicone surfactant and methylated seed oil were equally effective in reducing johnsongrass regrowth when applied after seedhead emergence. Improved control of vegetative johnsongrass with some adjuvants was not reflected in decreased regrowth.

Greenhouse and growth chamber experiments were conducted to evaluate primisulfuron phytotoxicity to downy brome (Bromus tectorum) and Kentucky bluegrass (Poa pratensis) as a function of herbicide placement, adjuvants, and environmental conditions. Primisulfuron rates needed to produce GR50 (50% growth reduction) values were 0.97 ± 0.57 and 8.07 ± 1.85 g/ha for downy brome and Kentucky bluegrass, respectively. Primisulfuron was applied to downy brome and Kentucky bluegrass at three placement sites: foliar, soil, and foliar plus soil. Foliar or foliar plus soil applications were more effective at reducing downy brome dry weights than the soil application of primisulfuron, whereas Kentucky bluegrass was injured more from the soil or foliar plus soil applications than from the foliar application of primisulfuron. Primisulfuron at 5 g/ha applied alone reduced downy brome dry weights by 5%, whereas when an adjuvant was added, dry weights were reduced by 52 to 83%. Primisulfuron was more phytotoxic to downy brome at alternating temperatures of 8 to 16 C and 16 to 24 C than at 0 to 8 C. Phytotoxicity of primisulfuron was less when downy brome plants were stressed for soil moisture after herbicide treatments than when the plants were not stressed or only stressed before treatment.

Field studies were conducted in 1995 and 1996 at three locations in Illinois to determine soybean response to combinations of thifensulfuron and bentazon. Thifensulfuron was applied at 2.2 to 8.8 g ai/ha alone or in combination with 280 to 560 g/ha of bentazon. Soybean injury 30 d after treatment ranged from 0 to 22% when thifensulfuron was applied alone at 2.2 g/ha. Increasing thifensulfuron rate to 8.8 g/ha increased soybean injury to a range of 12 to 44%. Soybean grain yield was significantly reduced compared to the yield of untreated soybean when thifensulfuron was applied at 4.4 and 8.8 g/ha in two of five and four of five experiments, respectively. The addition of bentazon to thifensulfuron consistently reduced soybean injury and stunting. In many cases, increasing the bentazon rate to 420 g/ha decreased soybean injury from thifensulfuron to a greater extent than 280 g/ha. In cases where thifensulfuron decreased soybean yield, the addition of 420 or 560 g/ha of bentazon restored yields to levels that were not lower than untreated soybeans. These studies demonstrate that thifensulfuron at 2.2 to 8.8 g/ha in combination with bentazon at 420 g/ha may be safely applied to soybean for broadleaf weed control.

Experiments were conducted to compare barnyardgrass control and rice injury and yield with emulsifiable concentrate and dry flowable formulations of propanil as single or repeat applications with crop oil concentrate, methylated seed oil, a blend of organosilicone surfactant and methylated seed oil or conventional nonionic surfactant, and organosilicone surfactant. Two applications of propanil were more effective in controlling barnyardgrass than a single application. The emulsifiable concentrate formulation of propanil controlled barnyardgrass more effectively than the dry flowable formulation in some but not all experiments. Differences in barnyardgrass control with propanil as influenced by adjuvants were minor and inconsistent. The most consistent barnyardgrass control and the highest rice yields were obtained with repeat applications of the emulsifiable concentrate formulation of propanil.

The effect of nonionic surfactant, crop oil concentrate, organosilicone surfactant, methylated seed oil, and a blend of organosilicone surfactant and methylated seed oil on absorption of 14C-clethodim was evaluated in barnyardgrass (Echinochloa crus-galli). Absorption of 14C-label was greatest during the first 40 min after application when 14C-clethodim was applied with methylated seed oil or a blend of methylated seed oil and organosilicone surfactant. These adjuvants increased the rate of absorption more than crop oil concentrate, organosilicone surfactant, or nonionic surfactant. Crop oil concentrate was more effective than organosilicone or nonionic surfactant in increasing absorption, with nonionic surfactant being more effective than organosilicone surfactant. These results generally agreed with the order of increasing efficacy of clethodim on barnyardgrass as affected by adjuvants in field experiments. Another study was conducted to determine the effect of bromoxynil on absorption and translocation of 14C-clethodim in yellow foxtail (Setaria glauca). Bromoxynil reduced absorption of 14C–clethodim 4, 8, and 24 h after application and also reduced the amount of 14C-label translocated from the treated leaf. These data suggest that antagonism of clethodim control of yellow foxtail by bromoxynil observed in previous research can be attributed partially to decreased absorption and translocation of clethodim.

Field experiments were conducted at Kalispell, MT, to determine the optimum adjuvant combination for wild oat control in peppermint with quizalofop. Quizalofop was applied to four- and eight-leaf wild oat plants at 20 and 50 g ai/ha with either a nonionic surfactant (NIS) or methylated seed oil (MSO) alone or in combination with 28% urea ammonium nitrate (UAN) liquid fertilizer. Differences among adjuvants were most apparent when quizalofop was applied at the lowest rate. MSO was more effective than NIS for enhancing quizalofop activity. Quizalofop efficacy with both adjuvants increased when applied with UAN. Greater than 90% wild oat control was obtained with the lowest rate when applied with MSO plus UAN to four-leaf wild oat plants. These results demonstrate the potential to improve the consistency of weed control as well as reduce postemergence herbicide rates when applied with the proper adjuvant combination.

Currently, there are no effective herbicides registered for the control of hoary cress (Cardaria draba) in alfalfa (Medicago sativa) or alfalfa/grass mixtures. Due to this lack of control options, field experiments were conducted near St. Ignatius, MT, from 1995 through 1997 to determine the optimum imazethapyr rate and adjuvant combination for hoary cress control in alfalfa/orchardgrass (Dactylis glomerata) pastures. Imazethapyr was applied in the spring to rosette stage hoary cress plants at 33, 67, and 100 g ai/ha with either a nonionic surfactant or methylated seed oil alone or combined with 28% urea ammonium nitrate (UAN) liquid fertilizer. Hoary cress control was poorest when imazethapyr was applied at 33 g/ha, yet provided a minimum of 80% control. Imazethapyr applied at 67 and 100 g/ha provided greater than 90% control during the year of application regardless of surfactant or UAN additions. None of the treatments controlled hoary cress the year following application. Alfalfa yield was unaffected by imazethapyr applications. First-cutting orchardgrass yield decreased as imazethapyr rate increased, but total seasonal forage yield was unaffected.

Control of two perennial weeds, quackgrass and Canada thistle, and the differential sensitivities of three imidazolinone-resistant (IMI) corn hybrids and their sensitive isolines to various acetolactate synthase (ALS)-inhibiting herbicides were evaluated in greenhouse studies. The postemergence sulfonylurea herbicides nicosulfuron and primisulfuron controlled quackgrass > 80%. The imidazolinone herbicides imazapyr and imazamox applied postemergence controlled quackgrass 70 and 74%, respectively. Canada thistle control was 89% with the sulfonylurea herbicide metsulfuron. Primisulfuron, chlorsulfuron, and tribenuron controlled Canada thistle > 70%. The imidazolinonesensitive corn hybrids did not tolerate the imidazolinone herbicides imazethapyr, imazaquin, imazapyr, AC 263,222, and imazamox; the sulfonylurea herbicides chlorimuron, chlorsulfuron, metsulfuron, tribenuron, and triflusulfuron; and the pyrimidinylthiobenzoate herbicide pyrithiobac applied postemergence. The ‘Ciba 4393 IMR’ corn hybrid, homozygous for an unknown allele, was resistant to all of the various ALS-inhibiting herbicides that injured its sensitive isoline. The magnitude of resistance for this hybrid was greater than the other IR corn hybrids. The ‘Pioneer 3751 IR’ corn hybrid, homozygous for the XA-17 ALS allele, was also resistant to a number of ALS-inhibiting herbicides. The ‘ICI 8692 IT’ corn hybrid, heterozygous for the Mut2 allele, was only resistant to the imidazolinone herbicides.

Greenhouse and field research evaluated yellow nutsedge growth, vegetative control, and tuber production after application of glyphosate, various acetolactase synthase (ALS)–inhibiting herbicides, and tank mixtures thereof. Yellow nutsedge was controlled by the herbicides halosulfuron at 35 g ai/ha, chlorimuron at 12 g ai/ha, and imazethapyr–imazapyr at 62 g ai/ha (> 70% control); imazethapyr at 70 g ai/ha, glyphosate at 840 g ae/ha, cloransulam at 17.5 g ai/ha, and rimsulfuron at 17.5 g ai/ha (40 to 70% control); and imazamox at 45 g ai/ha (< 40% control). Compared with the untreated control, tuber fresh weight in the field was reduced 45 to 91%, and tuber density was reduced 33 to 90% by all herbicide treatments 42 wk after treatment (WAT) except imazamox and rimsulfuron. Tuber sprouting was reduced to 19% in plots treated with halosulfuron and pyrithiobac compared with untreated yellow nutsedge 42 WAT. Chlorimuron and imazethapyr–imazapyr controlled yellow nutsedge at least 90%, prevented panicle formation, and reduced tuber density and fresh weight by 90% or more 14 WAT in the greenhouse. The addition of glyphosate to cloransulam or imazethapyr increased yellow nutsedge control and reduced tuber density and fresh weight when compared with either ALS-inhibiting herbicide or glyphosate applied alone. Tuber density data indicated that there were 8 tubers for every gram of tubers harvested. Yellow nutsedge height was 15 to 20 cm 4 to 5 wk after tillage, using growth analysis data. Long-term yellow nutsedge management may be aided with treatments that reduce tuber production.

Field studies assessed weed control and potato injury with rimsulfuron applied postemergence at various rates in combination with various adjuvants. Weed control was influenced by choice of adjuvant and rimsulfuron rate. Rimsulfuron at 0, 9, 18, 26, and 35 g ai/ha was applied with nonionic surfactant (NIS), crop oil concentrate (COC), methylated seed oil (MSO), or silicone-polyether copolymer (SIL). Potato injury was less than 5% for all rimsulfuron rates and adjuvant combinations. Redroot pigweed was controlled greater than or equal to 93% by all treatments except rimsulfuron at 9 g/ha + SIL. Except for redroot pigweed, rimsulfuron treatments with SIL controlled kochia, hairy nightshade, common lambsquarters, and volunteer oats less than with other adjuvants. At lower rimsulfuron rates, weed control with rimsulfuron + MSO tended to be greater than with rimsulfuron + NIS or rimsulfuron + COC. Common lambsquarters control was 75% or less regardless of rimsulfuron rate or adjuvant. Tuber yield generally increased with increasing rimsulfuron rates. Depending on rimsulfuron rate, tuber yield was 10 to 15% lower with rimsulfuron + NIS or rimsulfuron + COC compared to rimsulfuron + MSO, while tuber yield was 18 to 37% lower with rimsulfuron + SIL compared to rimsulfuron + NIS, rimsulfuron + COC, or rimsulfuron + MSO.

Field studies were conducted from 2000 to 2003 to determine the effectiveness of potato desiccants for late-season hairy nightshade control and also their effect on hairy nightshade seed germination. Commercial sulfuric acid at 280 L/ha controlled 94 to 99% of the hairy nightshade 1 wk after treatment (WAT) in all years. Diquat at 560 g/ha and glufosinate-ammonium at 420 g/ha provided at least 93% control 1 WAT in all years except 2003 when control did not exceed 72%. By 3 WAT, hairy nightshade control ranged from 93 to 100% for all treatments, including carfentrazone-ethyl at 56 g/ha, diquat at 420 g/ha, paraquat at 530 g/ha, and sulfuric acid (proprietary process) at 280 L/ha. Treatment of plants with desiccants did not affect germination of hairy nightshade seed, with the exception of a 7% reduction in germination by the higher rate of diquat in 2001 and 2002.

Many herbicides that control broadleaf weeds in wheat can antagonize grass herbicide efficacy, resulting in less grain yield due to competition. Also, the broadleaf herbicide carfentrazone-ethyl can injure wheat, leading to less grain yield because of physiological response. Experiments were conducted to evaluate carfentrazone-ethyl antagonism of fenoxaprop-ethyl, tralkoxydim, clodinafop-propargyl, imazamethabenz, and flucarbazone-sodium and injury to wheat with tank mixes of carfentrazone-ethyl plus each grass herbicide or thifensulfuron, tribenuron, metsulfuron, or imazamox. Carfentrazone-ethyl did not adversely affect control of wild oat or yellow foxtail by grass herbicides in wheat. Carfentrazone-ethyl alone caused 21% wheat injury 3 d after treatment. Adding flucarbazone-sodium to carfentrazone-ethyl resulted in the least wheat injury among treatments that included carfentrazone-ethyl. Fenoxaprop-P-ethyl or clodinafop-propargyl with carfentrazone-ethyl also resulted in less wheat injury compared with carfentrazone-ethyl alone, which was attributed to formulation safeners. Sulfonylurea herbicides provided safening of carfentrazone-ethyl similar to flucarbazone-sodium, while imidazolinones did not alleviate injury. Tralkoxydim plus carfentrazone-ethyl gave 28% wheat injury compared with 21% from carfentrazone-ethyl alone. Wheat injury was no longer visible by 20 d after treatment, and wheat yield was not affected by carfentrazone-ethyl injury when wild oat and yellow foxtail were present or controlled with herbicide.

Field trials were conducted at five sites from 2001 through 2003 to determine the influence on sugarbeet and weeds of repeated broadcast and banded reduced rates of desmedipham plus phenmedipham, triflusulfuron, and clopyralid in combination with either 1.5 or 3% v/v methylated seed oil (MSO). Desmedipham plus phenmedipham, triflusulfuron, and clopyralid were applied POST three times at 5 to 7 d intervals at either 25, 50, 75, or 100% of a 180 plus 180 plus 18 plus 100 g ai/ha dosage (full rate). When averaged over all herbicide rates, crop injury was 6% greater, but common lambsquarters control was 5% higher, and crop yield was 15% greater with broadcast compared with banded herbicide application. In most situations, adding MSO at 3% rather than 1.5% did not improve weed control. Sugarbeet injury was lowest (11%) and the average weed control was 86% when herbicide rates (with 1.5% MSO) were 25% of the full rate (microrate). Applying an herbicide rate (with 1.5% MSO) that was 50% of the full rate (half rate) increased crop injury from 11% with the microrate to 18% with the half rate and elevated average weed control from 86% with the microrate to 92% with the half rate. Common lambsquarters control increased from 81% with the microrate to 89% with the half rate. Sugarbeet root yield was 23 t/ha when no herbicide was used, 48 t/ha with the microrate, and 49 t/ha with the half rate compared with 54 t/ha when the full rate was applied without MSO. Increasing herbicide rates to 75% of the full rate (three-quarter rate) (with 1.5% MSO) increased crop injury to 27% and average weed control to 96%. Applying 1.5% MSO to the full rate increased crop injury to 35% with no improvement in average weed control over that achieved with the full rate without MSO.

Canada thistle is one of the most troublesome and difficult weed species to control in established alfalfa grown for seed production. Current tools available for control are limited because of cultural management strategies associated with seed production. Alfalfa seed losses due to Canada thistle interference include both reduced yields from competition and increased seed loss during seed cleaning operations. Additional tools are needed to alleviate these losses. Field experiments were conducted in 1998, 1999, and 2000 at two locations in Park County, WY, to evaluate Canada thistle control and alfalfa tolerance to several postemergence herbicides. Bentazon, imazamox, imazethapyr, and MCPB were applied, alone or in combination, at different Canada thistle growth stages. Methylated seed oil (MSO) was added at 1.5% v/v to the treatments containing imazamox or imazethapyr. MCPB applied alone when Canada thistle was 7.5- or 15-cm tall caused severe alfalfa injury (28 to 40%) and resulted in less Canada thistle control (23 to 27%). Imazamox or imazethapyr applied alone when Canada thistle was 15-cm tall did not cause any significant alfalfa injury but resulted in unsatisfactory Canada thistle control (29 to 35%). Bentazon was the only treatment containing a single herbicide that provided more than 50% Canada thistle control. The treatments providing the best balance between Canada thistle control (>80%) and alfalfa injury (<13%) were a single application of bentazon combined with either imazamox or imazethapyr. These two treatments also yielded the highest, more than 800 kg/ha. Split applications of bentazon combined with imazamox or imazethapyr were similar to single applications.

Greenhouse and field experiments were conducted in North Dakota to determine the effect of adjuvants applied with imazapic on the control of leafy spurge and production of various grass species and to determine the most effective fall-application timing of imazapic for optimum leafy spurge control with minimal effect on herbage. Imazapic applied with a methylated seed oil (MSO) adjuvant tended to provide greater leafy spurge control than when applied with other types of adjuvants. Imazapic applied alone or with adjuvants reduced production of some grass species in the greenhouse, but it did not decrease herbage production in the field. Imazapic at 140 g/ha applied with MSO or with 28% N plus MSO averaged 72% leafy spurge control 12 mo after treatment, compared to 33% control from imazapic alone and 40% control from picloram plus 2,4-D. Imazapic at 140 g/ha applied with MSO in mid-September provided greater leafy spurge control compared to August or October applications.

Field studies were conducted in 1995 and 1996 to investigate postemergence (POST) applications of rimsulfuron (12 g ai/ha) plus thifensulfuron-methyl (6 g ai/ha) in tank-mixtures with various acetolactate synthase (ALS)- and non–ALS-inhibitor herbicides for weed control in corn. Rimsulfuron plus thifensulfuron-methyl controlled giant foxtail and common lambsquarters at least 95% but did not control common ragweed. Rimsulfuron plus thifensulfuron-methyl tank-mixed with 20 g ai/ha primisulfuron-methyl, 17 g ai/ha CGA-152005 plus 18 g ai/ha primisulfuron, 18 or 36 g ai/ha halosulfuron-methyl, 18 g ai/ha nicosulfuron, or 280 g ai/ha dicamba controlled giant foxtail at least 89%, common lambsquarters at least 96% and, with the exception of the nicosulfuron combination, controlled common ragweed at least 88%. Rimsulfuron plus thifensulfuron-methyl tank-mixed with flumetsulam (26 g ai/ha) plus clopyralid (69 g ai/ha) plus 2,4-D (140 g ai/ha), atrazine (560 g ai/ha), 2,4-D (280 g/ha), or dicamba (308 g/ha) plus atrazine (588 g/ha) reduced the control of giant foxtail to less than 78% 26 d after treatment (DAT). Corn injury was less than 12% from rimsulfuron plus thifensulfuron-methyl and from mixtures of rimsulfuron plus thifensulfuron-methyl with other herbicides except when rimsulfuron plus thifensulfuron-methyl was mixed with flumetsulam plus clopyralid plus 2,4-D. This combination injured corn 26%. In these studies the appropriate tank-mix partners for rimsulfuron plus thifensulfuron-methyl were primisulfuron, CGA-152005 plus primisulfuron, and halosufluron-methyl.

Experiments were conducted in the 2000 to 2001 and 2001 to 2002 growing seasons to evaluate the efficacy of AE F130060 03 plus AE F107892 with nonionic surfactant (NIS) or methylated seed oil (MSO) plus urea ammonium nitrate (UAN) applied in November (early postemergence, EP), January (middle postemergence, MP), and March (late postemergence, LP) for control of Italian ryegrass in barley. AE F130060 03 plus AE F107892 was also combined with MSO and UAN and various postemergence (POST) small grain herbicides at the three application timings. All AE F130060 03 plus AE F107892 treatment combinations controlled Italian ryegrass at least 84% at the three application timings. Treatment combinations of AE F130060 03 plus AE F107892 applied LP generally resulted in lower yields because of increased duration of Italian ryegrass competition, increased barley injury, and insufficient time for barley to recover from the injury. Transient phytotoxicity to barley occurred after EP and MP applications of all AE F130060 03 plus AE F107892 treatment combinations. LP applications of MSO and UAN or other POST small grain herbicides combined with MSO and UAN increased barley injury compared with injury from AE F130060 03 plus AE F107892 applied with NIS. Results indicate that AE F130060 03 plus AE F107892 treatments are an effective method for control of Italian ryegrass in barley; however, treatments should be applied either EP or MP to reduce early Italian ryegrass competition and allow sufficient time for barley recovery from injury before harvest.

Studies were conducted in 1999, 2000, and 2001 to evaluate cotton response to CGA 362622 applied postemergence with various adjuvants. In field studies, CGA 362622 was applied at 3.8 or 7.5 g ai/ha with nonionic surfactant, crop-oil concentrate (COC), or a urea-based adjuvant. A nontreated control was maintained weed free for comparison. Crop injury over all years at 1 wk after treatment (WAT) was 27 and 34% from 3.8 and 7.5 g/ha CGA 362622, respectively, when rates were pooled over adjuvants. At 4 WAT, injury was 6 to 14% with 3.8 g/ha and 10 to 21% with 7.5 g/ha CGA 362622 during the 3-yr study. Cotton heights at 2 WAT were reduced by 16 to 31% of nontreated cotton heights by CGA 362622. Heights of treated cotton did not differ and were generally equivalent to the nontreated control at 8 WAT. Cotton injury and height reduction were greatest when CGA 362622 was applied with COC. Cotton lint yields and fiber quality were not affected by CGA 362622 rate or adjuvant treatment. Cotton injury from CGA 362622 in the greenhouse was similar to that in the field. Initial cotton injury and subsequent reduction in leaf area or shoot dry weight were generally lowest when CGA 362622 was applied with no adjuvant or UBA in the greenhouse.

Two field experiments were conducted to evaluate the reduction of torpedograss canopy by multiple split applications of quinclorac applied postemergence (POST) to bermudagrass golf course roughs in Florida. In one experiment, quinclorac treatments were reapplied for a second year to the same plots, followed by biomass harvest, to evaluate the reduction of torpedograss rhizomes. Quinclorac sprayed at 1.68 kg/ha/yr visually reduced torpedograss canopy to a varying extent, depending on the number of split applications. The most effective treatment, 0.42 kg/ha quinclorac applied four times each year for 2 yr, reduced torpedograss canopy to 10% compared with 86% torpedograss canopy in the untreated plots, and reduced torpedograss dry weight to 1,570 kg/ha compared with 8,010 kg/ha in the untreated plots. After reapplication for 2 yr with the commercially labeled treatment, quinclorac at 0.84 kg/ha applied twice per year, torpedograss canopy was reduced to 45% and dry weight to 4,640 kg/ha. Visual evaluation of canopy was too optimistic in representing the herbicidal control of torpedograss by quinclorac because torpedograss regrew from rhizomes, and canopy was a relatively small part of the plant. In plots not chemically treated, pachymorph rhizomes were 63%, leptomorph rhizomes were 24%, and leaves were only 13% of the total dry weight of torpedograss.
